#12 I think we're all glad to get or try the software. But just because bundling adware with software with common practice nowadays does not mean it is acceptable, ethical, or reasonable, especially when it is done by stealth, as in this installation. Crime is a common practice too, these days, but that does not make it ok.

Thanks gotd and ashampoo.

If you're concern about spam & adware from this product, than pick a different burning software. There are lots of options that are free and worry free. I like using CDBurnerXP.

I gave up the expensive burning software long ago. Most of the apps (like Nero) have gotten too fat and bloated with "features" I don't want, and it slows down the computer.

That's why something like this is perfect. Works well, easy to use, and gets the job done.

I'd say grab it while you can.

Hi Folks,

The real comparison is with ImgBurn and some others (Infrarecorder, CDburnerXP, et al. We know that Roxio and Nero developed into possible headaches over the years, so Ashampoo looks good by comparison.

My question is .. does Ashampoo do anything special not done in ImgBurn ? That I will use ? (ImgBurn has a crisp interface, so that is probably a wash.)

With Ashampoo I always wonder who is actually writing the program, no support forum, little visibility.(I remember my experiences with Magical Defrag which was "OK"). It seem like with most areas you can do better, but the Burning may be their highlight, where they are an A product.

The email is not a real problem, I filter it to a box and you can unsubscribe.

Any company that has a degree of trickery to get toolbars installed is a problem, those things cause the common non-techie user great headache. Imo, opt-out much be very obvious on ALL installs (express too). If that is not the case with Ashampoo (as discussed above), I can not spend the time, knowing that while I may bypass the problem, a dozen friends would get hurt. The fact that even companies like Comodo and Avira have tripped up in this area does not help, whenever a company gets too slippery, it is time to leave. I will give CCleaner as an example of a install-with-toolbar company that afaik at least has never done it in a tricky way, although I would rather they found another way. It is mediocre to have any ASK type toolbar, it is terrible if there is any trickery or compulsion or hidden maneuvering. At that point, find an alternative.

And I do find all the poetic waxing on the forum a bit strange. Outside the Burning products, I consistently think of Ashampoo products as "OK". That is all.

Steven

Ok, here is the major difference between this free version and the full version. Their own page which will come up when you register doesn't make it clear.

In the full version, in the "Burn Movies" section, you can create a DVD-Video, or Blu-Ray video disc, the kind that plays on your non-computer DVD/Blu-Ray player or with your computer DVD/Blu-Ray player software, simply by dragging your AVI or MOV or MP4 files, or any other special codec you have installed on your machine, into the Ashampoo program's screen. You can drag in files of any format for the same disc, like both AVI and MOV for making the same disc. You can have and mix both 4:3 and 16:9 videos and make either a 4:3 or 16:9 DVD-Video disc. (If you don't know what I mean here just let the program do its defaults.) There is also a basic DVD menu creator and a basic cuts and fades and titles video editor. From that it will automatically convert the dragged in file(s) to the DVD or Blu-Ray format, and burn the DVD or Blu-Ray disc.

In the full version, as you drag in your files (and shorten them through editing if you do), it tells you what quality the resulting DVD-Video disc will have. It automatically uses the highest bitrate it can for the DVD, so you can get high quality with 1 or 2 hours on the disc, down to low quality of as much as 10 hours on one DVD-Video disc. (I have never tried the Blu-Ray functions, so times may be different there and probably much longer time is possible on a Blu-Ray.) There is no program any easier for this purpose. You can download the 30 day full version trial on the ashampoo site - it is fully functional, no watermarks, it just expires in 30 days. The trial version will not interfere with this free version.

There may be an extra setting here and there in the other parts of the full program compared to this Giveaway of the Day version, but nothing major. This free version is everything you need to burn files that don't need to be converted to anything else. You can even burn DVD-Video discs with this free one if you have converted and created the proper DVD-Video files some other way.

For this free version, as noted above be sure to choose Custom installation and uncheck anything you don't want. Register your email and you will get special offers for the full version and all Ashampoo products. They're all great, especially at the special email offer prices.

(Note, I'm just a satisfied paid customer of Ashampoo and Giveawayoftheday!)

I am REALLY confused. I've already installed the software, but....

When the registration popup displayed, it said I had 10 days to try the software, and that I could click on the link to get a FREE license. There was no mention of Giveaway of the Day, so is it really free to everyone?

This Is Ashampoo Burning Studio Elements, and I also have Ashampoo Burning Studio Advanced (which I also got from GOTD). But I think it's been stated here that this is free software. Are both Elements and Advanced free?

The for-pay offer is for Ashampoo Burning Studio, which the $7.99 link given here says is the premium version. Would it not stand to reason that the Advanced version would be the premium version, and that the basic version would be the one without a qualifier in the name? I don't want to spend the $7.99/$9.99 if I already have a better version, but it would be worth the cost to upgrade to the "premium" version if it has additional features that I would use.

The most frustrating thing is that Ashampoo doesn't have a representative here to sort all of this out.

Comparing Burning Studio Elements 10 to Burning Studio 2010:

Burning Studio Elements 10 adds an option under "Burn Movies" to "Burn a Video Blu-ray from a Prepared Folder".

That was the only difference I could find in the main menus. 2010 has a blue background, Elements 10 has reddish-orange. Other than very minor appearance changes, the individual functions looked the same.

Burning an audio CD does NOT create a Table of Contents (ToC) on the audio disc!!

There are no options to create the ToC when burning.

The ToC is needed to display disc/track/artist info on CD players with displays!

As a DJ who uses CD's a lot this is a deal breaker.... and a true shame.

I have Burning Studio 10 (not "elements") and love it. I don't know i "elements" is any different, but 10 is fine.

Yes, they send emails every so often trying to sell you their other programs, upgrades, etc. I don't feel they send too many emails, though. Every few months they offer a "pay what you want" offer where you can get their stuff for 10-20% of the regular price. Also special prices on upgrades if you buy before their released.

You do have to be careful when you install their software. Not all of it, but some of it "offers" to install a toolbar for you. You have to opt-out to refuse it instead of opt-in to get the toolbar.

Best you can do is to opt-out and later email their support people and complain about the toolbar in the program setup. If enough people mention it, they'll likely drop it.

When you register, you give them your email address. They will send you emails occasionally to offer other products, etc. I have most of their software and find it equal to that of the bigger companies but for less money.

If you don't have any burning software get it while you can. I can't say i like the gui of ashampoo products but that's just my taste... :>
For now i'm just sticking with cdburnerxp witch fullfils all my needs of burning media (don't let the name fool ya it's a modern proggy).
Sadly cdburnerxp comes bundled with opencandy which is a lame advertising product. But the good news is if you don't download any recomendations from OC it won't install itself on you're comp permanently.
( for more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCandy )
I also can recommend imgburn witch isn't bundled with anything...

Seriously folks, if you don't know how to unsubscribe to an email list or at the very least set up a spam filter so you never even see the emails you don't like then you really have no business trying to author dvds.

Some of the folks here remind me of the woman that was given $10,000 for free and her first remark back to the giver was "Is that all?".

This is an awesome program I have been using a long time. All their products are top notch with excellent support if needed.

By the way this installed in roughly 10-15 seconds on my Win 7-64 machine. The folks complaining it takes 3 or 4 minutes to install really need to come out of the dark ages with their 10-15 year old rig.

Yes Ashampoo sends a LOT of email, which I have been receiving for several years now. The reason I put up with it, is they do have excellent products and several times a year (or more) many of those offers are for some of these excellent products at absurdly low prices. Also, at least once a year I get an email about several free products. I must have two dozen full product registration keys on file at ashampoo (another good reason to give them your email and set up an account, and I have not spent very much money with them at all.

Great products, at great values and no, I am not affiliated with the company in any way, shape or form, except as a customer.

I can't understand all this whinging.

Ashampoo make decent quality software.

If you've ever bought any software from them, keep the emails turned on. You get wonderful offers on their software, sometimes for FREE, or so cheap it's worth sacrificing a pint of beer to do so.

for those who complained about discs not finalizing, you must be burning the discs at the wrong speed. Never had a disc fail yet when burning so far. Although most burners will burn at up to 16x, you are better off burning at 4x or 2.4x anyway. The burn will be more stable.

Thank you ashampoo and GAOTD.

Sorry buddy, you seem very confused.
imgburn is only for images and not all other burning jobs. So its not comparable at all.

ASHAMPOO BURNING STUDIO ADVANCED 2010 was free under a time limited promo, perhaps it is valid yet but this doesn't mean that people who look gaotd and not everywhere else around, should not get this version for free.

Would someone please tell me which program I should get? I have Burning Studio Advanced 10 (GOTD), which is not the full version of Burning Studio 10. If I download this program, am I losing functions I had in the Advanced version? Someone said that a version of Burning Studio had authoring, but I don't think that is the Advanced version. Many people might have the Advanced version and might be losing functionality if they download this. I don't want two different versions if one of these does what both do.

Thank you.

It looks like this is a package of just what is says - "Elements" - of the total package titled "Burning Studio 10" that lists for $20 more. But since everyone raves about Ashampoo's previous offerings, I will give it a try because all I have on my system is whatever comes with Windows 7 Pro. I will be looking for the complete title here someday though!

Ashampoo's Burning Studio is a nice app or burning suite with plenty of fans. It's not nearly in the same price range as Nero &/or Roxio suites, so the only real comparison is if you want to brag about money saved. If you try today's Burning Studio Elements & like it you'll probably be happy to pick up the full version, probably from one of their future e-mail offers. IMHO don't count on more than minimal video DVD authoring, & in fact after testing I think you'd be much better off using other free or shareware/payware tools for that, but it should work if you've got your mind set on using it. Installation of the Elements & full versions is side by side, & after uninstalling the full version Burning Studio Elements seemed to run just fine.

Most Ashampoo products have low to lower-mid-level impact on Windows, & Burning Studio Elements IMHO fits right in that range, with a Ashampoo folder holding 1158 files, 23 folders, ~128 MB [if that seems a lot, the program folder for Nero's current suite (without the HD option) weighs in at ~2.5 GB]. New folders are also added under User, User Local, & All Users App/Application Data -- just search for Ashampoo. I recorded ~280 new registry entries after install, but using the software that quickly doubled.

In a nutshell Ashampoo Burning Studio Elements provides an easier to use interface than the free ImgBurn, but does not have ImgBurn's range of settings or capabilities. And neither the full or Elements versions of Burning Studio come close to everything included in Nero or Roxio suites. But not everyone needs everything those other 3 offer, & in that case one of these Ashampoo apps should work just fine.

I loved the [free] Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010 Advanced I got here some months back. But then my laptop need a repair - burned-out motherboard - involving a Windows reinstall; after that the license key for this program would not activate it.

So I switched to Ashampoo Free Burning Studio 6 [always free; no special offer needed]. And even though it was an older version, it's been really great too.

Thanks so much for this, which would seem to be an upgrade near or equal to Burning Studio 2010 Advanced.

For me this installed very quickly [Vista here], and all users need to do to avoid the dreaded Firefox toolbar and all that jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjunque is to choose "Custom" while installing and then uncheck the unwanted options.

As far as frequent emailed ads go: you will have gotten an Ashampoo account as part of obtaining the licensing key. Log in and, yes, as a previous commenter indicated, there's an opt-out for their emails. I can confirm that this works... I've been completely unbothered by their ads for months and months.

ImgBurn does the same things as this GAOTD for FREE (including burning Blu ray Disks) and its file .exe is just 5MB in size:

http://www.imgburn.com/

So can't see any reason to pay 30 BUCKS for this SW...LOL!

And if you already have the (FREE) ASHAMPOO BURNING STUDIO ADVANCED 2010 version there is no need to download it....but I wonder why ADVANCED 2010 VERSION is FREE (see Softpedia website) and this is NOT.

Big mystery!!

It's interesting that so many people are complaining about the toolbar and installation process - I really like the fact that both express and custom install with the options available for each were clearly visible on the same screen.

Is this really a problem? To me it seems even easier to make the decision of how you want to install it than most other software which, when you click on custom install, takes you to another screen to see what you can check/uncheck. The only suggestion that I would have is to also give the ability to choose which program group to add it to (I group all of my software by type: Burners, Graphics, Utilities etc)

For me the installation process and registration was very easy and fast - something that I appreciate since I test so much software. However I don't really have anything to burn at the moment so I can't actually evaluate the software right now.

This brings up the suggestion I made to the GAoTD developers last time I posted which is:

Some people (like myself) can't always fully test software during the day of the giveaway but would like to post additional comments afterwards. When I go to the forum link provided in the 'Leave a comment' section it takes me to the root of the forum - now I have to hunt for the thread about today's software. Not a problem right now as it's on the front page but what about if I come back next week? Or do a Google search and end up here on this page at some future date?

I feel that, in order to streamline this process, an additional link to the post/thread for the software being given away would be very beneficial for those who wish to fully evaluate the software before contributing their comments, people searching for product reviews that would be coming here through a search engine and also the product developers.

Anyway - part of my job is improving the user experience so can't help myself ;-) Sorry if half of this post isn't related to the current software and thanks for listening.

I have Ashampoo Burning Studio 10 and will not be downloading. As with others, this is a great software offering. The product is fantastic and I have burned many things. Simple, nice looking, not cluttered. It can do DVD, CD, BD, print and design covers, labels, booklets, burn disc images, burn movies backup and restore files. What more could you want. I assume Elements is a SW with probably less functions, not sure though, but a good start toward the Studio. I have enjoyed this program. I select to receive email from Ashampoo to keep up on what is available. Ashampoo does have good deals that one should not turn their nose up to. The Toolbar, I have that already. Sometimes I use it and sometimes not. My choosing. There are a lot of programs from Ashampoo and I have the free as well as the purchased. Might add that they have a neat Ashampoo Office Suite (10) which is also great. My Microsoft Office crashed and I was never able to get back up and running -- so in frustration, I CANNED IT period. Just as well, the Ashampoo Office Suite, in my opinion, is better. (I could go on for hours on that program. :)) All total, I think I have all of their programs except maybe three. Thank you GAOTD and Ashampoo for this offering for everyone. :) Have a nice day everyone and happy burning!!!!

I have to setup an account with them to complete the install process? Nah. I don't need yet another company wanting to spam me or possibly be "hacked" in the future and have my info out there.

If you want us to use it, include a serial or let it auto register. But I'm not signing up to get spam or give you my info for free software.

Now back to InfraRecorderPortable as it covers my burning needs.

I also have advanced version. Ashampoo products are always solid, but going to pass on elements here as like it has been asked what is the difference and no one knows. As far a them bombarding you with emails, you go into your account with them and opt out of everything or some things as you like. Just open one of their emails and the link is there to do so. I did and the emails stopped. You may have to wait a day or two for it to sink in with them but that's not bad, they do stop. Check your spam box as your reg key email may be in there instead of in your inbox. cheers, kat

Looks quite nice and just what I need on my laptop. One question - anyone know if there is any way of burning extra files (i.e. text files, images..etc..) outside of the video_ts folder when burning a DVD? It is simple in Nero - you can drag and drop anything outside the video_ts folder but this just seems to only work only with the video_ts file you want to burn

I have the full version of this software, which I purchased from Ashampoo (along with a lot of their other software). I highly recommend it!

Nice. too bad they pushing things on setup, always check what you install, I do not want toolbar, and I do not want their search engine and sure I do not want them as my home page.
All this things make me give them 4 out of 10
