Downloaded this and thought it would be good. However, after loading the photos I have and FINALLY getting it to make the mosaic it crashed when trying to save the image. Uninstalled and reinstalled after the "fix" was offered. STILL didn't work correctly and would NOT save the photos. Removed it from my system and will not be trying this one again.

Just my 2 cents, but it seems to me that most people have a problem with the number of pics needed to create a mosaic. I would point out that this defines your "resolution" i.e. your TV. If you used, for example, 100 pics, you would end up with a resolution of 10x10. The end result would look nothing at all like the pic you were trying to create. If you wanted to cut the original pic into tiles you could easily do that using any paint program. I think most people just want to display their pics in the form of a shape or symbol not necessarily into an entire pic of it's own. Again, you could easily do this with a paint program, arranging the pics to your taste, using different sizes, adding text and fx, etc. This program is to create a "picture" using your own pics as the "pixels" of which which you need many. Anyone who has ever tried to create an icon at 32x32 will know the challenge that poses. You could try copying the few pics you have to boost the number to 1500. Any time I have seen this type of mosaic effect used on tv (ie where they zoom out and it's a bunch of pics making up a company logo) if you look closely, it's usually made of duplicates. More variety however will help the program pick out different hues and shades giving you a nicer result.

1,500 images no problem. Do not let the lack of images stop you.
If need be the site offers free download of image packs.

Also, what if you only have 500 images, who said you could not make 3 different folders giving each picture a new name in each folder?

I get the same failure as the user did in comment #42 except I get the failure just trying to open the program. Tried downloading and installing 3 times with the same failure every time. This was WAY after the "bug" fix and something is still going whack.
Too bad too since I really wanted to see what their program did and have some fun with it.

I like mosaic photos & have seen a few on the net before. This software would be very nice and I've seen all the users saying either you need 1500-5000 photos or they HAVE a few thousand pics on their drives to make a mosaic.
What we really need here - and I think some other mosaic pgms can do - is to use online photo collections to produce the mosaic! You should be able to tell it to d/l pics from Google Images or Photobucket (freefoto.com, etc) in order to make the mosaic image.

IMPRESSED! GOTD hit a homerun with today's free software. I installed, used, and loved Artensoft's Photo Mosaic. It is simple to learn and it produces a stunning piece of photographic art. No bugs encountered. The software works as promised. Artensoft produced a great piece of software. BUT would I buy it for $80? No! I would not pay $80 for a piece of software that ONLY produces an awesome mosaic. Maybe $29.95...but not $80! So, thank you GOTD for today's freebie.

This program does everything it says it will do. I added 1600 images to a mosiac and it came out great. I am going to find all of the pics of my family. Use a family shot for the mosiac and put every pic I can find in the mosaic. I'll save the result as a hugh file to be sent out and have a poster or canvas made out of it.
This is great software and works without a hitch.

I have downloaded and installed today's giveaway without any problems on windows 7 32 bit and I am trying the program but it is still searching for images on my computer of witch it requires 1500 images, I have been using AndreaMosaic for a long time and it is 100% free for home use and you can create mosaics with any number of photos and it has many other features such as choose the number of each photo you would like to use and you can even choose to use a number of blank spaces to use and a lot of other features are included, this is an excellent program just Google AndreaMosaic download.

Wow, when I first saw the program, I wondered how I wished I could use my 4,000 plus pictures. Found out it requires 3,000! I have SP3, and it ran well, except that it did crash one time, but then upon restarting, it completed and I created a really nice picture! Again, wow, wished I had this long time ago! A truely great find! Cannot find any negatives, except it is a bit slow, but with so many pictures, it is to be expected. The results are fantastic!!

I downloaded and installed it early this morning and again this evening. Still won't open. I continue to get the same error message mentioned above. I'm trying to install on a Vista Home Premium 64 bit machine. Too bad. Looked like it might be interesting. I'm wondering why they have you send in the error message when they don't plan to reply to it.

Thank you GOTD and Artensoft.
Downloaded early this morning and have been playing. LOL. Downloaded (after the update-I hope I got the right one)this morning and have been working with the program. It downloaded very well and registered great. I have a Win XP Pro SP3 Intel Quad Core operating at 3200. No problems at all. I was interested in the 1500 min and 5000 would be ideal. Went to sight to download the free package to use, but due to maintenance and could not get it. But, if, and however, I remembered the way to get icons for my files. Soooooo, I went to search and simply entered *.jpg. Well, guess what folks. There is a wealth of images there. I ran into (C drive) 63,385 files. I can just imagine what I am going to find on C, D, G, and F when I enter .bmp, .png, .gif, .3DS, .obj etc. Anyway, the test. I took 5509 files and used a painting I did as the master. I ended up with a file 8195 x 10835 and 67.7 mb. But the result at taking only 5509 of the images was fantastic. Going to try a larger number to see what I get. This program came along at the right time as I was trying to figure what to with my image as it lacked something. Again, thank you for this gift GOTD and Artensoft. I hope if anyone who wants to try this program but feel they do not have enough images, to go to the Artensoft site after maintenance and download there free package of images (there are two of them) and give this program a try. Its fun. Also, try the search *.jpg etc. You will be surprised whats there. Have a good day all.

How interesting. Apparently certain negative posts are not allowed on this site and my entire comment earlier has mysteriously disappeared. What's the matter? You don't want people knowing you are allowing other software to be installed on someones pc without their knowledge and consent? Software that gathers and sends important information about your programs and system to unknown sources? BEWARE to anyone that downloads and installs this program. Check your start program files and delete the unwanted software that gets installed without your knowledge or consent! I am fully capable of checking my own software for any necessary upgrades that are needed thank you very much.

I have just downloaded it and it set up great without a problem on OS Windows 7.
The problem I had was with the # of pictures I had 1,129 and clicked on the link to download some from the program site and nothing, so I looked in the help dropdown and clicked on the program website again nothing.
So I am going to uninstall after sending this, as I am not impressed with the program it obviously still has a lot of bugs in it that need to be corrected before being released

Someone misread the details apparently. The help file says you need a minimum of 150 (one hundred fifty) photos, not 1500 ... that makes a big difference to many of the responders here.

Although the software is quite nice I find certain features sorely lacking. Mainly how to select which photos it can and cannot use.

I let it scan part of my photo collection by selecting a directory with many subdirectories containing over 1900 photos. Unfortunately that collection contains a few photos of a long narrow printed card I made purely for documentation purposes which is very unphotogenic and shows as a light band with dark bands on either side. I guess the program only calculates a single average colour value for each photo and it uses these photos for a mid-grey value while it looks entirely different and really screws up the mosaic. It is used about 25 times in a mosaic and apparently I cannot delete it from the mosaic other than laboriously selecting another 'tile' for every instance of this photo.

I would like to see an option that would allow me to select a photo used in a mosaic and delete it from use in that mosaic altogether and also an option to remove it completely from the database. Preferably I'd like to have a tree structure with checkboxes in front of every directory (and even every photo, viewable as a thumbnail) when selecting folders to build the database from and the same for viewing an existing database with the option to select photos that I want to remove from the database and the option to delete them.

If I could expand the folder that is currently the "root" of the database it created to selectively check/uncheck which folders it should use I could simply deselect the folder that contains the unsuitable photos. Now I'd have to recreate the database and add every suitable folder separately in order to be able to check/uncheck them. With a lot of sub-folders that's quite a hassle.

Such a feature would greatly enhance the user-friendliness of the app.

Loaded and ran fine on windows 7 64-bit. the longest wait was on loading the pictures. Formed the mosaic faster than I anticipated. the only problem I saw in my end product was 3 sides were uneven which meant I would have to crop. that could have been because some of the pictures I used were not standard size. overall, a nice handy program to have around.

Many have mentioned a minimum of 1500 photos. Was there a typo somewhere ? The help file to the software quite clearly says a minimum 150 photos, although ... Incidentally, in dealing with fewer photos, say 150 to 200, I found the freeware Foto-Mosaik-Edda so much to my liking, that I sent in a donation !

Program is nice but you need 1,500 photos to start off with. It suggest you actually have 5,000 that is a crazy amout of photos. You are able to download more photos if you dont have enough, which is nice...But i wouldnt download it again unless i had enough photos.

Thank you for your comments.
#10, #15, ...Early versions limited the number of photos to 300. However, the resulting mosaic could appear less impressive than it could be and the initial result could disappoint users. After a series of experiments, we decided to raise the limit to 1500 photos, as this number of photos usually produced very good results. Besides, we uploaded several sets of photos to our site that can be downloaded and added to the program. We may add this option to the program settings in future versions of the product. At the moment, advanced users can manually override this limitation by editing the configuration file "Documents and Settings\... ...\My Pictures\Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard\params\Options.ini" in the notepad:
[MinBase]
Value=1500

#26: We have already received several bug reports. We will correct errors in future versions.

#13: Thank you for the link seadragon.com

#23: The program supports many formats, including RAW.

#20, #25: We have ideas how to increase the speed of creation photomosaic and we are working on it

I was curious too see what the end result would look like if I used my icon database. This software needs 1500 photos to work, it recommends using 5000 for good a result, my database contains over 51,000 icons. I'm counting the number of hours it's taking...

I am not familiar with mosaics. Can someone tell me how you'd go about getting the mosaic made into a poster? Installed easily on Windows 7 Professional.
I made a mosiac of a photo of myself using over 2200 other photos.
It took quite a bit of time, as can be expected using so many photos, but the result was fantastic.
The results were a much better mosaic than I have gotten any other program I have ever used.

I haven't loaded this gift yet, but in a way the 1500 photos piqued my interest since I do sports photography and often end up with 1500 or more photos from a soccer game or track meet... maybe this is a kool way to display them all in one mosaic!

First the disclaimer that I'm just not into mosaics, whether they're created traditionally using tiles, or put together from hundreds of digital images, using something like Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard. There are several competing apps, many of them free or shareware with free trials, & you'll come across a few comparisons &/or reviews using Google keywords "mosaic software". If you want to see how Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard works, the developer has been nice enough to provide a couple of downloadable image archives you can get to from the app's Help menu, but beware they're about 90MB if you've got a slow connection. According to the app's site [linked at the top of the GOTD page], today's GOTD doesn't tint or alter the photos it uses -- some of the competition will.

The app itself is small at just over 8MB, & by default wants to store it's database with the photos you import in My Documents \ My Pictures \ Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard\ . Menus, controls, options etc are minimal -- you can basically set the jpeg quality levels & where you want everything stored, but other than that it's a matter of importing your [I guess you could call them] *tile* images & a master image you want the final mosaic to look like.

FWIW, bearing in mind I'm not a huge mosaic fan, I've seen these sorts of mosaics used where people work or in groups & organizations where they make up whatever image using employees/members photos... I also imagine it'd be fairly easy to run a video clip through something like the free, VirtualDub, 1st decimating frames [cutting the number of frames by maybe 1/2 - 3/4 or so], then converting to still images. At any rate that's the pitch I'll likely use when pointing today's GOTD out to friends/family that I think might enjoy it. ;-)

This is great stuff GOTD. Unfortunately, my picture collection is a little too small to take full advantage of it. I wanted to use it with wedding pictures but there simply aren't that many pictures of the event. Still it's easy to use and the price is right. Thanks.

P.S. Any chance you will get a Flash decompiler on here any time soon? I could really use one but their a little out of my price range for a hobby project right now.

Installed routinely on Win7 x64. I've set it going on a directory with 120,000+ photos, as otherwise I'd have to specify numerous sub-folders to reach 5000. This should be interesting - at the rate it is going it might not finish today.

This program is certainly beyond the norm for GOTD; few of us will use it very often but it is still an interesting freebie.

This looks like an interesting program. It worked fine on my Windows XP computer. I didn't encounter any errors, bugs or glitches. The program was solid and the Wizard user interface was easy enough to figure out how to make a mosaic without looking for any type of help or instructions. I was very pleased to see that it found and was able to process Nikon NEF (RAW) files without any trouble.

What I liked:
Able to process RAW files as well as JPG. I assume it took other file types although I'm not sure how many.
Scanning process (looking for photos) worked nicely in the background while I was doing other things.
There rendered image looked very nice. There were several choices of image file type to save and quality/size of the final picture.

What I didn't like:
The database directory got quite large. It didn't appear to clean itself up. I was able to delete the directories manually and they were rebuilt when I generated another mosaic without any problems.
Finding 1500+ takes a long time (preventing preview helped a bit). Fortunately, it plays nice in the background while I was able to do other things.

It would be nice to see an option for html web page output with a feature allow users to zoom into images.

A good product overall. Thanks GOTD and Artensoft.

Re #11.

Installed FINE on Windows XP Pro SP3.

As said takes an age to produce and if you don't have enough of your own photos you can download a batch of thousands (Small Jpg's) from Artensofts own site.

Finished article is brilliant and good fun if, using an art program, you display the pic at different magnification levels i.e. First one showing the individual pics, zoom out 50% and again Etc. Very impressive and NO crashes (Although it does appear to lock sometimes - Ignore that)

Thanks GAOTD. Pretty fair offering.

It's been a really loooong time since I've downloaded a program from here, but I decided to try today's giveaway. I'm really glad I did!

I LOVE this! The end result is HUGE (it is adjustable, but I left it at the default middle setting, which resulted in a 10.1 MB 5995x4180 picture), but you can actually zoom in and see the individual photos. If you have the necessary 1500-5000 photos, you could make really nice, personalized prints with this program.

Really fun to play with, this will definitely be a keeper for me!

The time to create the mosaic appears to go up exponentially with the number of photos in the database. I indexed about 20,000 photos, and now it's going to take hours to create a mosaic.

Prefer 'emboss' special effect available in most photo-editors! No doubt useful for VERY specialist art publishers for one-off special artwork! Can't see a use for it for myself! Shame it can't be used with eg 10 or 15 photos rather than 1500!
