VCD is nothing more than a collection of MPG-format files with .DAT extension.

If you want to “rip” a VCD, you just have to copy these files from VIDEO_TS or AUDIO_TS to a folder on your HD. (Or convert them to another format using a video converter.)

it not a good program
it could not get the colours right but it did convert a vcd into an avi file

Oh great. I spend more than an hour going thru all the comments

Thank you GOTD! The timing is great. We live in the U.S., and we have recently acquired a bunch of children videos on VCD which my wife would like converted to DVD since our cheap DVD player can’t play VCDs. As for those who complained about quality, well, the kids don’t care. I was looking at using freeware to convert our collection, but this is also FREE and simple to use. Works fine on my XP SP3 system. Two thumbs up, and thanks to Apex too.

wow, I don’t think I have ever seen a commercial sold VCD…..
and I have only ever burnt 1 VCD, and it sucked.

@54-Dick, seems you dont know when DVD invented. VCDs was very popular before DVDs were even come to Asia. If dvd and VCDs were created at the same time, dvd were popular then. But VCDs were very popular than dvd. That mean VCDs were invented before Dvds.
Do some researches next time before even you posts what the things you dont know.

Actually, .dat are actually slightly-modified mpeg-1 files. Most of the time, you will see them as something like video.mpg. Before you youngin’s bought your 1st $20 dvd burner, we all used the freebie tool VCDGear to convert between .mpg to .dat so we could burn videos on cdr’s to view using our dvd players. Thus, to find a freebie is easy if you are looking for a .mpg converter. Bet almost every single converter handles mpeg-1 files. Okay, that is one extra step, but it only takes a more few minutes.

OOOOps…after I made my comments in #59, I discovered that the program I actually used was FormatFactory, http://www.formatoz.com/index.html, and the one that I tried and it sucked big time was Apex (GAOTD special).

Apex converts in real time, apparently. FF ripped a whole VCD to WAV in the time it took to brush my teeth (>20 times faster).

However, my main problem with Apex was that after it was done converting, the output file was nowhere to be found.
