VCD is nothing more than a collection of MPG-format files with .DAT extension.

If you want to "rip" a VCD, you just have to copy these files from VIDEO_TS or AUDIO_TS to a folder on your HD. (Or convert them to another format using a video converter.)

Thank you GOTD! The timing is great. We live in the U.S., and we have recently acquired a bunch of children videos on VCD which my wife would like converted to DVD since our cheap DVD player can't play VCDs. As for those who complained about quality, well, the kids don't care. I was looking at using freeware to convert our collection, but this is also FREE and simple to use. Works fine on my XP SP3 system. Two thumbs up, and thanks to Apex too.

@54-Dick, seems you dont know when DVD invented. VCDs was very popular before DVDs were even come to Asia. If dvd and VCDs were created at the same time, dvd were popular then. But VCDs were very popular than dvd. That mean VCDs were invented before Dvds.
Do some researches next time before even you posts what the things you dont know.

Actually, .dat are actually slightly-modified mpeg-1 files. Most of the time, you will see them as something like video.mpg. Before you youngin's bought your 1st $20 dvd burner, we all used the freebie tool VCDGear to convert between .mpg to .dat so we could burn videos on cdr's to view using our dvd players. Thus, to find a freebie is easy if you are looking for a .mpg converter. Bet almost every single converter handles mpeg-1 files. Okay, that is one extra step, but it only takes a more few minutes.

OOOOps...after I made my comments in #59, I discovered that the program I actually used was FormatFactory, www.formatoz.com/index.html, and the one that I tried and it sucked big time was Apex (GAOTD special).

Apex converts in real time, apparently. FF ripped a whole VCD to WAV in the time it took to brush my teeth (>20 times faster).

However, my main problem with Apex was that after it was done converting, the output file was nowhere to be found.

@22 While VHS can be better quality than *some* video CDs, that is more because of the tradeoffs made at production-time (high quality = bigger files) rather than hardware issues. I feel the reason VCDs didn't gain as much popularity in North America was more a pricing issue: Movies on a set of VCDs were more expensive than on VHS.

----

@38 The "region" stuff is actually part of the copy protection scheme of a DVD (Video CDs are "region free" - most lack the space for that stuff).

Although you *can* set your player to view region 4, that setting can be changed only a very few times (5 in most cases) before it locks. (This limit is stored in the drive's hardware - replacing the drive is the only known method of unlocking.)

To find a software workaround, you will have to do some digging because the big movie companies have abused the courts to censor the 'net, calling DeCSS a "copyright circumvention device".

41 is right! as for those who think there are other "better" software for conversion, i looked at no 5 and his albeit better alternatives  but they all couldnt foot the bill.  Handrake, being open source appeared ok but it cant convert vcd(*dat) while this one does so there is no commparison. (like comparing beans and maize!)Cucu soft appeared a closer option but u must pay for it or else there will b a nagging screen whenever u convert ur file...Who wants an advert appearing in their personal videos. so there is no comparison too coz this one here is free, with no nagging screen while the "better" alternative has that.(like comparing a payware and free ware)cmon either keep the comments to urself or give a really "better" alternative. for those geeks who still think this giveaway is useless and here r better alternatives bring'em here b4 time expires. and remember IT MUST B FREE, NO NAGGING SCREEM, NO LIMITATION ON NO. OF FILES TO CONVERT, AND AMONG THE CONVERTIBLE SHOULD BE VCD(*DAT),NOT JUST DVD.
KNONK KNOCKK KNOCK....HALLO, NO 5, 7 ETC U STILL THERE

Sounds very arrogant. The truth is, it's been many years that in Asia, they were using cellphone texting and HDTV's before they became known to North America. In Asia, they also make better quality cars. And almost all of electronics that you see in America are imported from there. BTW, you're bragging about DVD's. Do you know who co-developed it? CD's and BlueRay, too. LOL!

#29 & #32 Mike....Thank you for your input. It is this type of input that makes reading the comments worthwhile. I make SVCD's for family members that have no computers when it comes to sharing photos of reunions. A simple SVCD plays well in DVD players, I can add soundtracks, overlay recorded conversations of family members, and create everything on an inexpensive medium. Since I started with SVCD's, the price of DVD's have dropped so I burn on either now, but SVCD was my choice when burning "give-aways" to family members who only had DVD players.
Again, your input was informative and much appreciated.
Todays offer from GOTD fills a niche quite well.

Since I have just started on Video I am new to the selection of a good utility for such. I have to go by what the comments are left. I always read them all and look at the percent thumbs up and down. I thank the ones that do leave comments to help us ignorant people to certain software. Because of what they wrote today on this software, I trust you all and have to say thumbs down as well.

#41 hit the nail on the head.

Just because software is usless for you, does not mean it is for all.

Not everyone has the latest and greatest confuser machine out there.

Also I think thet everyone here thinks that the only peole in here are from the same town oblivious to the many different countries repersented by the people that come to the GOTD site from around the world.

If it is usless to you, who cares. Keep those comments to yourself. That alone does not rate a thumbs down. If the software does not work on systems indicated then it should get a thumbs down. Not just because you do not like it or need it. Or you think it is outdated.

If you are so compuetr smart create your own software.

If I was GOTD I would just present it and not let you comment on it. The vast majority of daily comments are usless anyway.

WARNING;
converting VCD files (.DAT) into other formats, e.g., AVI is NOT a good idea as you will see in most cases the output video looks awful and/or does not save disk space. moreover, playing VCD file is possible with all common media players like VLC media player, windows media player, media classic player (all free) and even standalone DVD/VCD players. therefore, conversion does not make sense.
for small gadgets like PSP, iPod, cell phone, etc or for youtube, etc, this converter may be useful though. however, there are free alternatives in this regard as well, for example, media coder.

All these questions about what is VCD(video CD)--here's how I use it. Using "Super" which is to me the benchmark freeware video converter, I convert flash(.flv)video or other video format(e.g. WMV) to VCD Compliant and burn the VCD. Any good burning software will burn a VCD disk. The disk can then be played on a stand alone DVD player and the result on a wide screen TV is very satisfactory, both video and audio. I use VCD instead of DVD because the format is readily convertible from flash and typically flash files are short and more than you're likely to want in a given session will fit on a 70 minute CD. Apex VCD ripper is handy to convert VCD to another device.

I am not supprised to hear that some people have never heard about VCD. It is just like hearing some people say they've never heard about DOS or Windows 3.1. VCD was very popular in Asia but they may never be popular in EU or NM (North America). Nowdays, HDVD (HDVD5, HDVD9) has replaced VCD and get popular in Asia. I believe some of us have never known this either.

Since I have some classic movies that are in VCD format and I want to convert them to other format. This program is useful to me. Thank you GAOTD just as sincerely as for every program it's provided here. I know many programs are useless to me but they must benefit some people. I've learned to be thankful.

BE WELL WHITERABBIT!

***************************************************************8

When all is said and done we as individuals make the choice to download.

I paid the price yesterday with a computer laid waste. ( See my post on yesterdays game comments). I made the choice to download it. It wasn't my fault what it did to me but nonetheless, if I didn't make the choice it would not have happened.

People need to realize you aren't going to get Photoshop here or Call to Duty games. This place is for developing companies to try out their wares. GOTD gives them the opportunity to offer it here. GOTD it is appreciated what you do.We choose to be the guinea pigs for them by choosing to download. It is what it is. What happened to me yesterday is the worst case scenario. To be honest, still a complete mystery, as what happened, couldn't happen, but it did.

So download with care.

Regardless of whether VCDs still sell in Asia or not, VCD was once used to archive material by individual users before DVD burners become widely available. So this software can be used to take old VCDs and convert them to someone else. Whether there are still a lot of those running around, whether you'd want to try to convert them to something else, and so on, is not the point. The point is: limited use software is limited use software. Software for artists, for photography professionals, for technical specialists, is often offered here. Every piece software is not designed to do everything, including make your morning toast and coffee. Sorry that this software wasn't exactly written with you in mind, exactly to your specifications, exactly to solve your particular problems. But that's the way it is. If you come to GOTD for a long time and don't find anything you want then leave. If you post a comment to that effect, that's fine, that can be useful feedback. But to think it's about you, every day.... Spare us your immature whining.

As to those who say there's a lot of other software to do this: Don't you think you'd make a stronger case if you mentioned one or two? Or did you just think we would so dazzled by your brilliance that we would take your every word as gospel?

Please comment on the software here, not just let us know that your every need is not being catered to today.

Wowee. This will be great next time I'm in Bangkok, picking up some of the "brand new release" VCDs from the public market for $1.99 that someone recorded with their camcorder over at the "8mm Theater" and burned on to CDs. You know, the ones where the only "high definition" is the bald dude's head who is sitting in front of the cameraman.

Now I'll be able to bring those back to the states and convert them to something I can put on Limewire and YouTube. YIPEE !!

Since some of the people who use GotD have a use for this software, it is not useless. Maybe not something that the majority can use, but not useless.

This also brings up an interesting question (I know that questions usually get negative responses, so can we get a questions Forum or Group on Yahoo or Google or somewhere?) Will any DVD ripper convert different regions? True fact: a 4* movie (not action or adventure) is available on DVD in Australia only, or from a private individual. In the US and elsewhere on VHS only. I would buy an Australian copy and convert it if I can find a DVD Ripper that converts Regions, or at least Australia's Region 4 to Region 1.

Thank You

People may not buy VCD anymore, but that doesn't mean they don't have some that they'd like to convert.
Before DVD burners became widely available, I made cds in VCD format that would play on a DVD player.
Now may be the time to convert them to DVD - before the ability to play them is gone...

My mother-in-law's funeral took place in the Philippines and they sent us two VCDs of it (which of course are cherished) so I at least will have a use for this program. In UK and USA we get a bit insular and don't really know what's going on in the big wide world outside.

It is amazing how so individuals will spend their time complaining about something that is free. Just because you do not have a use for something, does not make it "useless". This download is not required and is at least worth every penny that is charged for it by GOTD.

I am thankful for GOTD and their efforts. Sadly, people are not grateful and still find flaws to complain about in gifts. Such is the story of America and the reason for it's current state. It is never enough.

#2: “When there are so many good quality freeware options”
Actually for VCD there aren’t all that many, nor does either “Xvid4PSP, MEGUI” advertise that conversion at videohelp.com. ‘Sides, if the Apex ripper uses freeware code, as do the freeware alternatives, why would the results be better/worse?
---
#4: “The xvid codec is open source...”
Soooo?
“...and it’s a compression format which is NOT lossless.”
Soooo?... It there a format used for distribution - not capture &/or editing - that is? Not to my knowledge. H264, mp4, wmv, mov, DivX, mpg2, rmv, flv etc are all lossy, as is DV & most all camera formats.
---
#10: “Unfortunately I am looking for one for DVD’s.”
To convert digitally: DVDFab or the free version [with the free version you have to convert the video to ipod separately with additional software].

To capture the playing video & encode to ipod: any of the prior DVD Ripper programs on GOTD.

See videohelp.com , doom9.org, or the Digital Digest site for software & guides.
---
#11: “VCDs are sold only in Asian countries which makes this program useless if it isn’t available in Asian languages.”
First, VCDs were available worldwide - just not popular in the west besides homemade or burned. Second, just because you may or may not speak an Asian language, please don’t think that noone in Asia speaks English.
---
#12: “The quality is not any worse than you guys thought VHS was.”
Actually that is incorrect - VHS was/is capable of storing more data than the smaller VCD video frame. That’s not to say that a home recording of a lousy TV signal to VHS is going to look anything but lousy - just like the original.

First about VCDs & SVCDs... Both use CDs instead of DVD discs, VCDs use mpg1 video at roughly Zune frame sizes, SVCDs use 480 X 480 (NTSC - 480 X 576 PAL) mpg2. Before DVD RW drives & media were cheap & common, creating SVCDs was pretty popular - before that VCDs were only mildly popular in North America & the EU. To my knowledge in NA & the EU, most VCDs & SVCDs were homemade. SVCDs could seem very close to DVD quality, and could be played on most DVD players out of China. PowerDVD 8 still plays them today.

The structure of VCDs is not as easy to work with as the DVD spec, & there aren’t nearly as many tools. The SVCDs I used to create OTOH include the separate mpg2 file, so conversion requires nothing specialized. If you’ve got a collection of VCDs then you might want to grab Apex VCD Ripper from GOTD - few if any VCD tools are updated any more & they may become more scarce.

The Apex VCD Ripper installation files do include some older code, & they do include cygwin1.dll [from the Cygwin site: “Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows.”]. The older code should not be a problem - in fact using similar 2 - 3 year old files is relatively common with many (most?) of the video convertors offered on GOTD, and they work fine.

Included are the set-up files for Xvid & the Windows Media Format Runtime, both from 2006. Again not a problem... The latest Xvid release is easily downloaded and installed if that concerns you - it’s separate from the Apex program, & just needs to be installed in Windows (if it’s not already) for the Apex VCD Ripper to use it. The separate but included Windows Media Format Runtime installs WinMedia codecs if you need them - they’re normally installed/updated with every new version of the WinMedia Player or one of the SDKs. Many, many people do not want the latest WinMedia player, and not forcing an update to the latest WinMedia codecs &/or players is preferred. Don’t worry about it.

I picked up various instructional VCDs overseas, and I would like to be able to convert them to DVD so I can play them where no computer is available, just a DVD player. It's hard to get 10 students around a laptop! Will this software convert VCD to DVD? If not, can you recommend a free or inexpensive program?

Note: I'm am not using these materials for 'exhibition', I am using them for their intended purpose, education and propagation of cultural heritage.

First a comment on the software: why make a specific ripper for the inferior VCD format? I'd rather have one piece of software that can read and write any video codec. There are many freeware/open source options to choose from. And VCD's are quickly disappearing -- as they should. So thumbs down for me without even installing it.

It's just as easy to pirate a DVD anyway. Which is just plain wrong, by the way, but that's another discussion.

Secondly a comment for poster #11: I live in Asia (Singapore) and I speak English. Do you not realize that there are more English speakers in India and China alone than in Europe and North America combined?

The only place I have seen VCD videos are illegal downloads from newsgroups in such things as alt.binaries.movies.vcd and others.
So to use this program I have to download illegal movies, illegally posted to the internet? Seems to me there is some "illegal" about that.

I have last seen a VCD around 5 or 6 years ago. I remember recording one myself, but throwing it away after seeing that the quality is bad.
Here, where I live nobody uses VCD anymore, because DVDs are cheap and offer quality far better that that of VCD.
Maybe ths would be useful to someone who has a ton of VCDs, but it is useless for me.
Thanks GAOTD, but I'll pass today.

@Kelly #12 -

VHS is higher quality than VCD, I'm not sure what you're talking about. VCD was a flop for a reason.

As others have said, this software is useless.
