65: My worry isn't whether I can possibly save the notes in a safer format from time to time IF I remember to do so, and IF I want yet another critical task to remember to do... Why NOT have a fail safe system, since there's no reason not to do things that way. (With standard .rar or .zip compression for encryption if desired, say). A second database where the program can shove more complex or incidental data that would be less readable or useful outside the program (such as formatting internal to the program, etc) would allow the program and its functions to be as intricate as desired. This isn't a technical hurdle. I doubt it's even a new, and therefore patentable thought.

Anyone who's been at a computer twenty years or more has "lost" data that they still have, but not in a usable or easily searched form. Where I come from, reams of Hospital and medical records still exist but can't be read anymore (therefore large numbers of citizens are refused medical pensions because they can't provide proof of a longstanding illness or disability).

Personally, I have a whole bunch of notes from the past that I can't properly untangle or search, much less incorporate into my present notes. I switched PIMs (company went out of business), then CPUs and didn't know how locked in my data was (even though it was supposedly properly backed up.) Why would anyone volunteer to be locked in? I sure won't do so a second time.

To paraphrase an annoying commercial: "It's my data, and I want it now! (And later, after your company is dead)."

Installation and registration was dead easy on WIN XP3 - SP3

just run install, when finished close app, copy .dat file to install folder, run app and copy and paste reg details from the readme.txt file into the registration dialog box, what could be easier, and much easier than getting email passwords etc.

Thanks AML and GOTD.

Hello is a cool software, i feel the GUI interface would add that little spark to it.
I like these kind of softwares so far i am able to capture notes.
Aml Assist 3.70: where i can coy and drag and drop to that Aml Assit button, that was really cool.
Thumbs up:

#51, 52 et al: At program startup, a logo shows that is definitely AML and not ami, so it can't be either of your guesses. My personal favorite would be that it is an acronym from their native tongue that we would not understand in any event.

This is the least user-friendly registration method since JV16. No, I take that back, it's worse than JV16. That is definitely NOT a good sign of positive things yet to come. Who needs the hassle when there are other similar programs without such hurdles?

For those still wondering if the last letter in Aml is l (lower case L) or ..., I copied "Aml" from the top of this page to WORD, and checked the character code - lower case Latin L.

Installation and registratiion went fine on Windows 7 pro x64 (goes into Program Files (x86) by default). There's a lot to explore!

Thank you!

I agree w/ 43 & 53, interface loox appealing, but not sure how stable. Would have to check it out 4 awhile.
Idea: include a personal wiki function, i.e. so you can create internal wiki-links by auto completion and tagging. Not many outliners include that (Zim, Wikidpad, MindRaider, M$ OneNote, another?).
Should be doable, if you already highlight code syntax.

Installed fine on my computer running win 7
have played with AMI for about an hour-I think it's a keeper

Installed it on hubbies computer and his virus/malware software kept deleting it and wouldn't let him open. Had to manually allow it.
Now all works great
thanks GAOTD

"AML" stands for "Ankylosing Metatarsal Limeosis" and it's a severe but relatively painless knuckle disease that causes your knuckles to disintegrate and turn into the same flesh that makes up the soft palate of your mouth. This takes exactly 27 days from the day you use it for more than two days in a row. Then, on the 28th day, a couple of big, Russian guys show up and beat the crap out of you because you now have no knuckles and cannot effectively fight back. Having a gun won't help, because, having no knuckles, you can't pull the trigger.

No, but seriously, I tried this program and don't like it. There is a TON of note-taking programs, many free any and all the time, that do what this does, and more.

It is better than some paid ones though because it does have some flexibility in how it lets you organize information. In my opinion though, it doesn't do better than either All My Notes (which, unlike #37, I bought years ago and have never had a problem opening old databases) or OneNote (which, contrary to what #2 says, you CAN get versions of Microsoft Office that do not have it).

One thing to note: for some reason, AML Pages does 'call home' periodically, even if you configure it to NOT check for updates. My guess is that this is so the big, Russian guys can keep track of usage and know when to show up for your beat-down.

Finally, to answer #39's question: 'Because it's obviously a comment from the developer!'

@53 - Joe Thorpe
I can second your argument that the dabase of notes must be in a standard format. This way one could retrieve the notes in the event of a program crash.

Nevertheless, as far as I can see the notes can be saved by AmlPages in CHM format (same format of the Help files in Windows)and be read as any Windows help file. It is quite a straightforward option.

Naturally, it would require saving in a folder of choice the updated notes whenever they are modified - replacing the previous version or as a new version.
Now, whether this extra step overrides the benefits presented by AmlPages or not, well, it is up to each one to decide.;0)

At last, a program of this kind that does support tags (although I think that it recently started to do that). I cannot understand why sometimes developers of notes related programs do not always provide this feature. For many users this is a deal breaker as the other search options are not enough.

According to @Frenk33 the program connects to the internet although the relative options were disabled. This never is appreciable; I think the developer should post a comment about it.

@Giovanni, yesterday I paid my respect so I wonder what more I can say today for all these portable alternatives :)

I was not going to download this program since I have keynote, which is
free and superb software for note taking. It can be encrypted, so I use it to keep my passwords as well. Also, if you store your URLs in the keynote pages, just click on the URL to start that page on your explorer.

However, after reading about the trouble some people had regarding the registration of AMLpages, curiosity got the better of me and I downloaded the software. I have registered it without any problem on my XP-sp3 computer. So for those people still having problems, this is what you have to do.

Download the zip file and unzip it, to get 3 files.
Install using the setup.exe file. do not run program. Close it.
copy the amlpages.dat file to your installation folder, which is normally C:\Program Files\Aml Pages\*.*
Now run the Aml Pages program and register with the key given in the readme.txt file. Go to Help menu to register. Close the program, run it again and verify that your program is now registered.

installed portable en from website, copied amlpages.dat to installation folder, changed the directory to different name (not tested on USB stick). start up with batch command run_portable.bat (is /portable option) Issues found: the data path is hard coded C:\document...
for portable this should be like .\data\...
for communcations the product tries to change protected registry settings (comodo firewall alarms)
Registration went smooth.
Startup is not showing anything but aml assist as a transparent item on the right hand top of the screen.

If you go to tools 0>settings->miscelaneous option save to ini.

Product looks good with tabs on left and top and bottom side

Looks more complex than allmynotes
one time a drwatson start request initiated by amlpages

did not try it myself so I can say anything about this application. personally I think that in this day and age, a note application needs to be able to run on your mobile device as well having some feature of synchronization. more than half of my notes are done on my mobile phone. to Giovanni's excellent list I wish to add my favorite KeyNote NF that unfortunately do not run on mobile phone, but is mobile and first and most - free. it also has with many cool features such as easy and fast search ability, rich text editor, encryption, tree structure and more, https://sourceforge.net/projects/keynote-newfeat/ (look at the user rating in compare to any other notes application.).

one question for the developer, what happen to all the notes I have taken with your application, when I need to re-enter license? (after a re-install or migrating to a new computer), if I have the backup, will I need to buy a license in order to see my notes, or the does giveaway license be good on a new environment as well?

Hi - On XP 64 bit with all updates, it installs but can not write the Aml assist EXE and DLL --- no reason was given. I ignored this and after install I tried to run it; the program opened but immediately gave error notification. I tried to take the debug option to give them some info on what was happening, but the debugger did not start. sound like and interesting program. I would like to try it but I do not know how to get around this.

I'm with 43. I can't lose reams of vital notes, so what I want is a note taker that creates (or reads) a very readable text file of notes as its basic database so that I always know I can access my notes without it, and don't have to bet my life on its export function - but also functions as a structured notetaker like the one being given away. Without that I'm too chicken, it's just not worth the risk.

Is there something out there that works this way?

I paid for allmynotes because I was promised help importing my notes. Falsely. No such help ever came, no reply to email requests for help. Now I realize I'd be betting the farm if I switched from extensive text notes to one of these programs. Very scary - we've all been burned this way one time or another. The only vital feature for a notetaker is that the fundamental database of notes you're creating is in a standard format (.odt .doc .rtf or .html) that you can read and use whatever happens to the program. Is there one notetaker out there that addresses this??

The portable version is in Beta stage and you must install it first in the registry in order to make the quasi portable to work.
If you save the file on a USB drive, you can not open it on another computer, waste of time.

Yikes, Norton Internet Security's stupid SONAR feature removes amlpages.exe. Make sure you click to see more and click options and restore. I say "stupid," because the only suspicious behavior it found was that there aren't that many users.

[Please no NIS hate unless you're a security expert and can say why. It's actually a top-notch anti-virus, not the bloat of years ago.]

#36 Nigel, re: How to make a portable versioin.

You'll need to download both the regular and portable version and insert some of the former into the latter:

1. Download and extract as usual from this page, for the readme file that has the registration name and key, and for the amlpages.dat you'll need for registration.

2. Download the portable version here for English or Russian [Note 1]:
http://www.amlpages.com/about.shtml

3. Do Solution 1 at link above, and enter license info. You won't get the "OK" button until you copy amlpages.dat from the regular download to the installation folder, as instructed right there on the license entry popup and in the original readme.txt. You'll need to cut-paste rather than copy-paste as discovered above by #21 ladybug2535 (Thanks!).

4. (not sure this is needed): Say "No" to restart. That's what I did, though maybe not necessary.

5. Do Solution 2 at link above.

I installed to my hard drive, then copied the portable folder to a USB drive, and needed to do steps 3 - 5 again for that installation.

[Note 1: If you need another language, this page, at the lower right under a portable column, has links for other languages. I didn't try them to verify that they're indeed portable versions.:
http://www.amlpages.com/about.shtml

Just my personal observation to those who think these type of apps are useless. I bought the similar program, AllMyNotes, earlier this year, even though I at first dismissed its usefulness. I have a very organized PC, and am an Evernote user, so how could such notes programs be any good?. But I've been totally surprised by its utility. It's faster than Evernote, serving me as a Google Notebook (R.I.P.) and Evernote (PC-only) and Notepad files replacement, capturing all sorts of things I do on the web. For other PCs, there are ways to sync in AllMyNotes (save a backup to Live Mesh or Sugarsync), and even to have content available for a smartphone (use the Tonido app to log into your PC to read a text or .rtf backup). I haven't explored this offering yet to see if there are comparable ways to make it work across platforms, but rather wanted to post the portable instructions quickly before some timezones turn to night.

I will give this app a go, but it will take some time to test it, one day is not enough.. I must say I am chicken about using these type of note taker apps, even one-note, because I dont know how my data is stored, I worry it may get corrupted and I may loose stuff.
Thats why I have stuck to good old text files for my notes - (no fancy options there - just text) which are easily searched and nothing can hide - the text is either there or not.:)
One great feature - that may or may not be in this app - is ability to easily define headings, subheadings etc that with a click of the tool button generates an extensive table of contents hyperlinked to those headings? Similarly ability to generate a comprehensive index based on all the text in the database.

This looks like a very comprehensive notes organizer. I have several that I use for different things. I've been keeping an eye out for one to keep my research in. I have no complaints about the GUI as I hate apps that use the ribbon interface. Also, complaints about subnotes appear - from the screenshots on the website - to be unfounded. I will have to install it to find out for myself. HOWEVER, I will wait until later today - when the registration issues have been resolved - before trying to install.

I'm going to deviate from my ideal betatesting approach today, because Aml Pages causes mixed emotions for me.

First off, I deeply appreciate the developer's feelings about the importance of good notetaking and being able to get value back from your notes. I laud them for their desire to make their software available they way they do. The GAotD is most generous, with full support for more than a year (which is far and above the normal GAotD deal!) More than that, I love the following additional gimmes:
a) There are a handful of ways you can get a free copy, not least of which is telling them a compelling reason why you should get a free copy!
b) The full-install distribution has the ability to become a portable version, and if you follow the instructions, it carries with it its license and .ini files, so that you maintain your notes and settings. This goes a bit beyond the possibility that someone 'screwed up' and gave us a .dat file and registration info that works for the portable as well as the offered version: the developers _want_ Aml Pages to be useful, and have done everything they can to see to it that it is!
c) When they say support, they aren't talking 5-hour wait times before someone with a very foreign accent tells you your problem isn't in their 3-ring binder. Aml Pages provides email addresses, an online forum, their ICQ number, and a feedback page. Again, far above the normally-acceptable requirements!

On the minus side, I started with the portable version, and while decompressing the .zip file, was told that there were two copies of a file (voter.ini), and what did I want to do with the second copy. Since everything decompressed into folders, it's hard to figure out how there could be such a clash. (Maybe it means they're more clever than the people who adapted Win's file manager to treat .zip files as nearly-native?)

Add to this the mild xenophobia I usually encounter when I find that the developers are not native-english speakers (probably Russian, if I read the web site correctly) and you get the usual desire I always have to tell them to hire a real English speaker to redo their web site and documentation and _especially_ advertising copy. But this was massively diffused by the fact that they are earnestly seeking third-party developers to write plug-ins and interested third-parties to translate... and that they are still open to someone helping out with the English translation as well!

Also, it's a bit rough to review a product whose producer seems to be named Aml Pages. I happen to agree that I'd like to know what "Aml" means or comes from, because it will help me to remember if it is A-M-L or A-M-I.

At this point, I'm not even going to try to review the program. It may be a Give Away of the DAY, but it's going to take a lot longer than a day just to read through the material provided as default notes, let alone thrash out how it works and how best to use it (if it fits into my way of dealing with note taking.) I have one-note, and it is the first thing I reach for, but it always leaves me feeling like it'd be nice if I could actually do something with it. (Not to mention that, as both a tablet and netbook user, One Note's interface has always been quite frustrating.) I'm no longer using a tablet, so I'm in the market for a note-system that functions well on an insensitive screen.

But, as noted, I expect it will take time before I can properly say good or bad about Aml Pages. The fact that they leave the office door open for over a year indicates that they really care to hear what I find out, and that gives me the kind of feeling I rarely get from software developers.

So for me, today's GAotD gets a rousing thumbs up, first because I wouldn't have known it existed without GAotD, but more because bringing to light software that I now desire to try out, and allows me enough time to do it properly. As a student (I believe the proper term is "Retread", since I'm over 50) and professional, note taking is important to me, and anything that improves both ends of the process (taking and interpreting) is a Good Thing (tm)!

Same problem as #17 can not archive web page from either IE or Firefox. Read the FAQ from #22, still does not work. Added plugins for IE. Still no joy. I thought it might be some conflict with add ons in Firefox but it will not work in IE either.

Without the ability to get information from the web into this program it is of no use to me.

#29, Jodydfw - What if there is no meaning to Aml? It might not stand for anything at all. It's your prerogative to use a software or not, but you do come across negatively with your "threat" or perhaps "bratty declaration" that you won't use the software and will use Giovanni's suggestions instead unless the developer meets your demand by telling you what Aml means stands for? It's not as if Aml is in all caps either.

#5, Donald - Thanks!!! I am aware of that and it is similar to AllMyNotes Organizer when it comes to the folder structure. I prefer how Tree Notes allows for the creation of sub-notes and sub-sub-notes, etc. It makes the tree much cleaner (less cluttered than having to create a folder each time I want to add sibling/child notes). Right now I use different note takers according to what I want to accomplish.

Win7-64 here,.. no problem copying and registering the prg,...
(some weird thing in some computers keeping that from happening?)
I like portables as well, just because they don't mess up the computer.
Running the prg, was delighted to see a portable available,.. downloaded it, and the reg key worked for it as well. Had to copy the
amlpages.dat to that folder too. But success!!! Maybe this is part of the problem with registration? You have to do this for it to work,....

I've used Keynote for years, (free) and have a ton of keynote files
depending on what I'm saving about (computers, family, etc) but this looks like a bit more fun with the ability to add certain things, so I'm going to play with it some more.

Thanks AML and GAOD!!!

Thank you ladybug2525. The CUT and paste technique worked for registering. (Note: I also pasted BACK to the "read me txt" so I still have the info there/)

#27 qaziu: I DID "COPY THE FILE PROVIDED..." to my installation folder and it STILL wouldn't allow me to "(copy-paste Registration name and Registration key)." But, thanks to ladybug, I CAN CUT & paste the above and it appears the software is now registered. I appreciate the free program but do think you have some unsolved issues re registration as I'm not the only one to have had this problem.
Good luck & cheers.

And I figured I'd start to get "Thumbs Down" to my #29 post so don't we try this. To all of those that are going to take the time to read the post (if you actually do read the post), and then click a thumbs down, then why don't "YOU" give us the correct definition of "AML". Or is that just a little too much for you cupcakes?

For #27. Been there and done that the first time before trying to register (I read the instructions) and it won't work. amlpages.dat is in the installation folder and no go. Registration box will not accept copy and paste, even when opening the program as admin. Paul

# 9 - Trucker has a very valid question that I was going to post too. But I would like this answered by G & G Software since they put out this software. What the hell does "AML" stand for? Besides "All My Loving" and some kind of American research on Lukemia. I've scoured the internet and cannot find the defination. So G & G what does it stand for? And I really do need to know this before installing your software or I'll have to go with one of Giovanni's offers he has found and posted as free alternatives. So what does "AML" stand for?

One concern I have because of a previous experience with another Russian-developed PIM (Maple): When a new version is introduced will it be able to read (or automatically convert)the files created in an older version?

For those with problems in registration process (18-19-20-25):

PLEASE COPY THE FILE PROVIDED amlpages.dat TO YOUR INSTALLATION FOLDER !
(Same thing if you use portable version ...)

Then try to register (copy-paste Registration name and Registration key) and it will work !

1. I used to use DropBox, but not the regular version (with installer), just the portable one: DropBoxAHK. I tried to use AML Pages with DropBox but it keeps to say:
"Cannot copy document
Source: C:\amlpages\Sticky notes.apd
Target: ???Cannot Get DropBox Config Folder???\Sticky notes.apd
Error: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect".
Can the developer put in program settings or in the plugin settings, the path to DropBox folder if the default one is not used ?
2. I create a new file, try to save it, but the software does nothing. Only when I close the program it ask me to save and does save it!

I use portable version. I don't like installer version of any software.
