Essentially useless for me! My "record collection" consists of over 56,000 78 rpm records...and I'm VERY active in the area of discograpy of old "78's!" I'm also fairly good at working withy MS Access...so I created an Access setup which stores ALL the relevant data for my 78's At best, this program would do no more than I can already do with MS Access...at worst, it simply would offer nothing that I need!

Hi, IMHO it's good to keep in mind that there are two types of music database software:
1. database/catalog of music files ALWAYS PRESENT in the computer (i.e. existing somewhere on the hard disc) - mostly used to build playlists and play them, or search/explore/organize the collection by several possible criteria
2. database/catalog of music files placed on REMOVABLE media (CD, DVD, ...), helping to find the right one by giving name of artist/song, genre, ...
In fact, most suggested alternatives belong to first category, and also freeware Jaangle, formerly Teen Spirit:

I just use AIMP 2 - easy to use and free. Sorry to say it that straight, but, you guys needs to dig a whole lot deeper, because a much of the recent stuff is free advertisment for the developers salespeople !

I've tried all these media programs and for me it has to be MediaMonkey. Some other programs work not too bad but MediaMonkey seems to do it all and more! I only have 16,000 songs, unlike the loser who has 1.2 million?? where did you steal that from, radio station maybe? Anyways, this program is useless and just about any of the programs that have been talked about in the comments are better than the gotd. If you haven't tried MediaMonkey then please do and compare it to the one your currently using. ITunes and Winamp seem to crash for me a lot, not sure how the other guy got his 90,000 songs to work on Winamp but good for him. MediaMonkey does the best job in analyzing and leveling volume if your looking for that, imo. Also searching files is instant in MediaMonkey and like the feature of recently added files, sorry for the long post. I'm using Windows 7 Pro and not a big fan of WMP 12 but it does the job.

1.2 million songs.

If you loaded 10 songs a day, it would take you 328 years to load them.

I use iTunes in conjunction with TuneUp Companion, which works very well for this sort of thing. TuneUp Companion will search the Gracenote CDDB for any missing info to complete your music database. But therein lies the problem - all these programs rely on Gracenote which is the most inaccurate and incomplete source of information in existence. There has to be a more reliable data source out there somewhere? Surely the recording companies have databases of all the albums they've ever made, which would have to be fairly accurate I'd imagine. I'd happily collate all the data from all the recording companies and combine it into a massive, all-knowing music database - for a modest fee of course.

This program doesn't support syncing with iPods or MP3 players, it doesn't have a store or download function, that's why I'll stick with iTunes, which is free and does a lot more....

#3 - The only limits here are the 24 hours needed to download and activate the software. Once downloaded, installed, and activated, the software is yours. However, if you need to re-format your hard drive, then (unless you're really lucky and the same software is offered again), you're out of luck - you can't reinstall and reactivate the software again. So, it is a little frustrating in that regard.

In response to post 11, MediaMonkey allows for the streaming of radio stations.

I think I will stick with MediaMonkey for now. It's ability to batch tag and keep records of audio that is offline works for me. The fact that it is free is also nice.

I vote for Songbird instead which is free and in my opinion more sophisticated.

This is a Scary software!
Setup drops all source of files into the Windows/System files dir.
Also asking for a reboot, not cool if you are using a server.

In defense of this program. Unless you have a professional media player you get what you pay for. As for loading 200 songs, 2400 songs or any of the number of songs. MonkeyMedia,WindowsMedia,Itunes,Zune or the likes. They are all jokes. If your libiary or scearch cannot handle what windows can it is junk. I was told by an undisclosed company to get rid of some of my music to be able to run their program without using up too much player memory. Something like 120,000 song limit,LMAO.. I have something like 6 Terabit of music or roughly 1.2 million songs in my collection, and I'm gonna get rid of some music? for what. www.tricerasoft.com and get the Elite Solution and you are only limited by what Windows will handle (about 4 million files) Sure ! it costs you a few hundred, but Hey why fool with toys when you can have the real deal for all your Audio & Video files. This program ( AllMySongs ) only does what it was created to do, nothing more, nothing less. So don't nock it for what it isn't , non of these $29.95 media programs are gonna give you enough space or speed for scearching music files

Sorry, but I find Media Monkey to be the best...this AllMySongs DB looks like and is free crap!

I use the free version of Media Monkey and it allows me to index everything (~200 CDs), whether on or off my hard drive. A nice feature is that everything that's on my hard drive (i.e., immediately accessible) is in bold type, while everything that's on CDs is in lightface type.

I have been using Quintessential for as long as I can remember; it works great, is feature rich, has plenty of available skins and plug-ins and I have never had a problem with it. I have tried almost every other media software out there and every one offered on this site since I have been visiting it (for over a year now, at the least). I always end up just returning to Quintessential, which has progressed to a full media player, and it does it well.
#9 - I got a chuckle out of your comment because yesterday I was doing a major cleaning on my pc and when I was running a duplicate search, I was floored by the number of entries, by Real Player, it was the single most ridiculous program I had encountered during the cleanup, and believe me, I have a LOT of software on my computer.

@#1: The huge advantage of the free MediaMonkey over any other free music database or player I've found is its ability to catalog offline media collections on CD or DVD in addition to what's on your current hard drives. They appear as greyed-out volumes in the overall catalog, but you can see the volume name and use it to locate your disk. It's very quick to catalog a disk and I've never hit a track limit. It's also an excellent all-round player, although not as flexible in terms of plugins as Foobar 2K. And it's a bit slow to start up, so I don't use it as my default player when I just want to hear one track by clicking on the file name. I use VLC (also free, also plays video) for that, as it seems to have the least startup overhead.

For what it is, it's a good program. It does what it says and without a lot of hassle. Tag editing is easy to do, and it finds album art fairly easily. I have to agree with TK on the installation though. It seems a little dated for the type of software it is. It's a basic database program, and should install in a straight forward manner. It bothers me that it needs a reboot. Overall, a reasonable piece of software without a lot of frills. There's tons of freeware out there that will do the same job as this, and at least as well as this. So why anyone would pay for it is beyond me, but as I said, it does what it says it will do. Without a lot of hassle.

The program is relatively "OK"... except for the fact that this program costs $30 which is a total rip off; you can get iTunes instead which is free!

Uhm... the program itself, if you DON'T BUY IT, you will only be able to store only up to 100 songs.

But if you BUY THE PROGRAM, then you can have more than 100 songs. Ok, so today is free, but it's still like "BUYING THE PROGRAM", but you just get the key for free, so meaning you get all the features of the full version, and yes, you can have more than 100 songs.

You get it people? The program is quite simple to use, but I wish they had "skins" to make it more stylish... kinda boring.

I'll give this product a 8/10.

This program doesn't seem to have a way to keep track of music NOT stored on the computer. I have a lot of stuff stored on CDs, including some data CDs with multiple folders on them. (These are mostly transfers from LP and tapes.) It also doesn't allow any way to keep track of LPs and older formats.

I've been using the spreadsheet in Open Office to keep track of my music. While it takes a little work, it gives me a lot of flexibility. Using the lookups such as the CDDB is handy and saves time, but a good program need a way to manually store information.

If I was going to use any software I would need something that allowed me to easily transfer an old database. There's just too much to transfer manually. As for keeping track of things already on the computer, Windows does that already.

it installed in wrong directory on Window Visa as default. Execute program should be in program file or program file x86. Data should be in user area. It does in c:\AllMySongs Database includes execute software and data in area that is not good place.

I think Windows Media Player will suffice.

This was offered September 26, 2009 as version 1.1 so not much difference in the file version upgrade, I had used the previous version and figured I'd try this one out to see "whats new" was able to upgrade previous version with no prob but I did find it rather hard to use. I currently use Movie Collector for Windows although it isnt free it works. http://www.collectorz.com/movie/movie_organiser.php but thanks GOTD this program is good for someone who is just starting out.

I've got ver 1.1 of this from a previous GAOTD offering. That versions not great, but it's not awful either. While I can't say how useful this giveaway will be to me at this point, still downloading, I can't believe people are actually suggesting iTunes might be better than, well, anything. iTunes has got to be one of the single most poorly written bug-ridden pieces of, er... software, ever written since the dawn of time. iTunes is the Battlecruiser 3000 AD of music software.

I will not be downloading this, so I may not have the right to comment...

But:
I use Winamp (free, although I actually paid for it as I was very satisfied) as player and to keep files updated/update file-information (from the gracenote-database). Works like a charm.

Then I use Mp3Tag (free, but feel free to support them) to embed cover-photo into the music-file (as winamp just puts the cover in real lov resolution in the file folder), and to do file-renaming and such. (Rename file to tag, tag to file etc)

With +90.000 songs, I have found no other apps that can do this "the way I want it".

You should not need this if you use a good music player such as Foobar2000. However, v1.0 of F2K has just been released, and some plugins (notably the lyricsDB plugin) do not work well any more, so this program could be useful during some time. But I'm sure there are plenty of free alternatives to automatically retrieve the tags and artwork.

This is already a feature of Windows 7. It's called the library. You can associate files or folders with a library that do not necessarily have to be in that folder (ex. they can be on your desktop).

I am definitely uninstalling this, since it is entirely obsolete.

Free winamp does it all and more!! I switched from MediaMonkey to Winamp as it also allows me to stream my own music aka radio station!

@reply #8... Go to "edit" and select all (either artist or albums), then download the artwork. As for the program not searching subfolders... when you add your music file, you have to choose the "add folder" option (rather than "add selected folders") for it to scan your folder and include all subfolders.

Installs fine on Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Will also install on XP-MCE 32-bit and Min7 x64 later. I agree about the admin rights although I think that if I had chosen a different destination folder rather than the default "C:\AllMySongs Database" setting, things may have gone differently.

This program has done a slightly better job than most media players I have installed (Winamp, RealPlayer, iTunes, Windows Media Player and Songbird) at finding the album/artist artwork. The GUI leaves much to be desired though but it gets the job done.

I've been searching for a media manager for a while now to complement my new fave media player (MPlayer for Windows) and I'm happy with today's offering.

Real Player?!!! Are you kidding? Who uses that outdated bloatware anymore?! LMAO!!! It has to be the worst POS format and player ever created.

I don't understand why people need to use software like this to categorize their music. What's so hard about making folders and putting your music in them? You don't need a database for that! I can easily find any song I'm looking for by looking in the folders which I named according to artists and album names. Sure, some of them require renaming and tag editing, but there is no easy way to do that. Any way you look at it, you need to use something like Tag Scanner to do that. Tag Scanner is free, and a very good tag/file name editing application.

Most of today's media players have these databases built into them so I do't know why you would need this software.

However, I figured I'd give it a try anyway.

I set it to choose music from a music folder i have on an external harddrive and it took roughly two minutes to place the 2400 songs into the database.

I then wanted to update album covers, band photos and aldum info for some songs. This is a problem. Each of these requests is a seperate process. The software will not grab all three items at one time. The software also doesn't look at itself and see that ten songs come from the same album, instead it looks at each song and retrieves the information ten times.

Then you have to start the process over to download album info and again for band photos.

I'm not even going to try and download lyrics for all the songs. That would take awhile.

The default view is nice but i had to add some columns like file size, format and bitrate (my own preferences) from the view\choose columns menu.

The built in player plays everything, but the controls are a little wierd to me - the previous button is after the next button and that makes them look out of place since the arrows face each other.

Otherwise everything works. It's not the best, but it is functional and does what it says as much as my quick tests prove.

Foobar is an excellent freebie.

An ambiguous statement, can you qualify if the giveaways are time limited in download time or time limited in USAGE time. I realise that as GOTD you have 24hrs to load and activate, but the other scenario is unclear.

Softpedia says this program has a 100 track limit. Can anyone confirm that? Also how does this compare to iTunes and the free version of MediaMonkey?
