I just checked the GAOTD forum, and there's a helpful forum post from BuBBY, an admin: "Late Emails? - Use RSS Feed"
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/5296

What the hell? Why not FIX the problem, GAOTD?

Just to be clear when I suspected it to be a virus and double clicked it I had Returnil protection turned on which was offered once on this website but I have the full version ... this allows u to test anything safely and once u restart anything that u did while the protection is on is gone. I would never double click on a virus without taking measures ... ok the uninstall.exe i got it ... but why did it create a irsetup.exe google this file it is known as a trojan . to see where it is created however u have to enable see hidden files and uncheck the hide system folders in the folder options of explorer .

Wow, what pathetic comments. This is a resource extractor, not a file finder. The various resource extractors aren't all the same. This finds a wide range of embedded file types. Although the scanning is quick, some things are slow, such as reading directories/folders, and the window update during scanning. What 330 KB limit? It found resources larger than that. If you use WOT, SiteAdvisor, and even worse, if you can't figure out how to use them, or if you can't figure out how to use this (it works and saves/copies fine, and it doesn't contain any malware), then your parents should return you and request a refund. While past versions had some image-file corruption issues, I didn't notice any with this version.

Sam Green @27, uninstall.exe does uninstall the program. Maybe your antivirus is preventing the program from launching because it thinks it is a virus.

Can come handy at times. Keeping it. It throws up an update window though, every time I start it. Is that the normal case? Any way to avoid it?

Wonder why when I installed this the computer locked up. On restart, clicking on the Allmedia Grabber 4.0 icon brings up Windows Explorer? Can't register the program since I never see the program. A thumbs down from me.

Sorry, But I tried this program...
Easy install but AVG and Norton Flagged it for spyware...
Ohhh I know that PGAOTD says it is free of all that... but

DEL and defrag was my response.
Yep it found a bunch of pictures etc... but were they really needed or wanted??? Hmmm My answer was NO... so it does as it says - but becareful.

After uninstalling I was checking how the uninstalling went. And found that the program had silently saved the found files in it's own program directory with each file suffix in a different directory. I re-downloaded & re-installed the program. The registration for it was still in the registry. Still quite a few things in the program don't seem to work. No viewing/browsing the files it has saved. There is just a file listing, Windows Explorer does more than this. The whole program seems rather crudely done. But it has some uses. I'll keep it for now.

I downloaded, installed, & registered it on XP Pro SP3. I can't see that it really does anything very useful. It did scan & list the files it found but didn't allow me to copy or move them anywhere. It says "Save as an Icon" or "Save as a BMP". Both of which are useless activities in my view. It just seems practically useless. It doesn't "Grab" anything! If it did "Grab" these embedded files it would have a little use. BTW, it is slow examining directories & doesn't sort the file/directory names it finds making it hard to find things in complicated directory systems like mine. The "Set as Wallpaper" didn't work. Uninstalled.

Unfortunately, this program stores its reg data in a Windows CurrentVersion key. When will software developers learn that Windows system areas are not their personal trash ground?

It looks good. After my format, there really isn't any files that I can properly test this on, but at least it didn't freeze when scanning as it did before.

Note: You'll need to allow the app the first time it's run so that it can separately check availability on its own website. You can block it afterward to disable the annoying update message (or just uncheck it in the options).

I downloaded and tried this last time it was offered. It works, and is easy to use, but it mostly picks up UI elements from games and the like, as other commenters have noted. That is not a particularly useful feature, and moreover, it can be done with WinRAR, perpetually free.

PS
What to do with the extracted media? It's protected by copyright laws, so it can't be used anywhere else.

To #29, Gotta read closer, that 39.90 for the Avanced is euros...if you calculate the exchange rate that would be $53.86 at the moment. If you jump at it you could save $1.04 minus exchange fees.

Installed ok and instantly asked if I wanted to upgrade. As the free offer for giveaway of the day is not valid for updates be careful not to click yes. Ran a test and it found a lot of bits. Not really very useful really. It also kicked up a virus under AVG. Not a very good giveaway.

So how is this different from using the search tool in windows, checking off all media boxes, then typing in a "space"? That literally does the same exact thing.

Installed on a 64-bit Vista machine. It picked up all the swf files in a folder I have so it is the Advanced version. It is NOT the latest version being offered. GAOTD's version offer is 4.0. It will ask you if you want to upgrade to 4.1, but says GAOTD's version does not support Updates.

@ #4: The site link for the Standard and Advanced shows the price for the Advance as $39.90, which is what the price is for the version being offered free today. So either someone screwed up and is offering the Standard free and showing price incorrectly as $39.90, or we are getting the Advanced version.

Anybody can straighten this out? Does it grab SWF files? If so, it's the Advanced version.

Again, remember when installing to right-click on the installer and the Activation file (if there is one) and chose "Run as Administrator". Sometimes it is better to untick the "Run" box after you click "Finish" and open the program after all has been activated. Check for registration is usually from the Help menu under "About".

ok I like this program a lot and I got it last time ... I had to reformat and loose it ... so I'm happy it's back again. HOWEVER CHECK THE FILE IT CREATES IN C:\WINDOWS\Allmedia Grabber\uninstall.exe THIS IS NOT THE UNINSTALL APPLICATION .. I double clicked on it and an error occurred but by uninstalling through the start menu it works ... My Prevx 3 is saying this uninstall.exe is a virus and i'm inclined to believe since this file has no effect and + it's weird for the program to create this file in the c:\windows folder ... Can u please check about it ?

All the McAfee Site Advisor report indicates is:

"we found links to 5starshare.com, which we found to be a distributor of downloads some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs."

and the downloads available were tested with the following result:
"13 green downloads

In our tests, we found downloads on this site were free of adware, spyware, and other potentially unwanted programs."

I don't see that there should be any concern for the GOTD download here, unless of course someone goes to the 5Star site and downloads files that may be less trustworthy.

For Vista operators: Let this install "using recommended settings" (after you try to install it the first time, it won't so that window will pop up. Once it's installed you won't be able to open it unless you use administrative privlege....Sooo; when you open it up from your program files..left click on AllMediaGrabber, but then right click on AMG v4.0 and choose "run as admin." An easier way is to add it to your QUICK LAUNCH and you can eliminate the first step(by having to open in program files. Hope this helps and THANKS GAOTD you're still the BEST. note; could really use "Project Dogwaffle 2, I lost mine in the "Great Crash" lol

why the heck are we normally being charged 40 bucks for this?? Check out Resource Hacker (http://delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zip) and ResourcesExtract (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/resources_extract.html)
For Heaven's sake, these programs will do exactly the same thing as AllMedia Grabber and more besides. And guess what? They're both freeware to begin with. And that's not all - they're portable to boot. And oh yes, they are much smaller than this - the combined, unzipped size for Resource Hacker & ResourcesExtract is 1.35 MB. Zipped, their combined size is 566 KB. This 4.6MB thing doesn't even come close.
Thanks anyway, GOTD team, but I'm definitely taking a pass on this.

This was offered in 2007 & 2008.

I am not complaining as everytime a bit of software is repeated it acts as a timely reminder to see if I have used it since last being offered. If not then I can uninstall it.

This one fell under that catagorie for me but it did what it was supposed to and, during the time it was installed caused no probs or conflicts, and uninstalled cleanly.

Thanks GAOTD

I just wonder why anyone will ever download such a giveaway. On installation, it prompts you if you want to download version 4.1, this being 4.0, with a note below, that you are not allowed to have any update on this giveawayoftheday edition of the software.(Meaning of course that if you download 4.1, you have to pay for it). I click no download of course. And then, next, is the message to remind you that the limitation of this edition is that it will not download any file more than 330K. Before trying anything, I uninstalled it immediately. The first time I ever done this to any giveawayoftheday.

This is a top-quality program. It works great. Here is a heads up if you are using Vista OS. On the home web site of Video Grabber you should click on troubleshooting and follow instructions to set your computer privileges to "administrator" by making a change under properties of the application. Compatibility must be set to "run this program as administrator"
This is different from installing the program as administrator for registration purposes.
Good luck and enjoy!
