#66, James, Aiseesoft CUDA support only applies to output formats which indicate that they're CUDA-enabled (because ffmpeg only supports CUDA for some output formats, mostly H.264-based).

#32, William, I forgot to mention, you can get CyberLink PowerDirector 9 for less than VideoReDo TVSuite V4 with H.264, or the Ultra64 version for the same price. It has vastly more features than VideoReDo, although without its error-correction abilities, supports WTV and DVR-MS, among numerous other formats, and supports a number of conversions, DVD and Blu-Ray burning, etc.

I installed AISEESOFT TOTAL VIDEO CONVERTER offered by GAOTD on the forth of July last year-2010, 39MB, to the hard disk of this laptothp, which is almost maxed, out which I need to uninstall 1st before installing this new GAOTD/AISEESOFT offering: MEDIA CONVERTER 15MB, I tried uninstalling it with my wonderful revouninstaller, that removes a ton of registry entries and other leftover junk most programs' uninstaller utilities leave behind, the accumulation of which, can really slow down a computer. It would not un-install ok. The error messagegs: cannot uninstall because unins000.dat does not exist. In program files there was only unins000.exe. Can someone from the Giveaway team ask Aiseesoft support to offer a link here in comments to a fix for completely removing the smaller in function aiseesoft complete video converter so that today's AISEESOFT TOTAL MEDIA CONVERTER can then be installed without leaving many megabytes of undeleted registry entries, and other unused lesser Aiseesoft program on the hard drive that will slow the hard drive down? Thanks in advance! Bettie Page9000

However, the registration key given with Aiseesoft Total Media Converter was rejected.

How can I now register the program as a Give Away of the Day?

Nice program, easy download and enjoyed reading all comments from users who asked questions and those who took the time and shared their knowledge with other users. I keep a copy of my "Key" for my computer data log and did appreciate the easy to read key. Thanks GOTD, Aiseesoft and commemtators for a pleasant experience.

Sometimes, I can't play my video through some media, just because of the inappropriate format, then I convert it to the appropriate, then it work. I think this software is wonderful. You will love it more than any other converter after you have used it.

#32, William, WTV and DVR-MS support is lacking in most converters because of prejudice against Microsoft proprietary formats. Microsoft provides APIs to access the files, although reverse-engineered solutions can work better. Unlike some of the nonsense which is often posted here, both formats have always supported DRM. Except for CyberLink, which has Microsoft licenses, I'm not aware of other third-party products which can read DRM'd WTV or DVR-MS files, but a number of products will read them if they're not DRM'd. The WTV format supports more streams, and more types of audio and video streams than DVR-MS. I've also never encountered any conflicts at all between PowerDVD and Aero on Vista or Win7, so anyone having problems must have an ancient version or defective video drivers.

My preference for working with WTV files remains VideoReDo TVSuite V4 with H.264, but it's pricey at just under $100. It's designed for linear editing, not conversions, but it will do some conversions and create DVDs. It can also be used to extract the unaltered (except for any needed error correction) contents of WTV and DVR-MS files. VideoReDo is designed to correct the numerous errors which often occur in DVR recordings. I always recommend using the latest beta. If you don't have a license, you'll get a time-limited trial to see if it meets your needs. If it doesn't do the conversion you want, you can use it to extract the contents and run that through another converter. Using the shift key when selecting Options will bring up more options (similar to the way that Shift-Right-Click will bring up more options in Vista and Win7 Explorer).

Aiseesoft has a very large selection of presets, but as always, it depends upon whether it has the presets for or is capable of doing the particular conversions which you want. Unlike most converters, it has decent WMV support. CUDA has been around much longer than Stream, and nVidia has vastly more software support than ATI, so CUDA support in third-party utilities is far more common than Stream support. CyberLink has always supported CUDA.

@#54, if the ISO id a dvd image, it shouldn't need conversion. An ISO is just am image of a disc, not a particular format. Uou can also mount the image and rip it, or just burn the image and then rip it to what you want.

It should include a way to convert ISO files to DVD playable in home DVD players. If I missed that would someone please point it out to me. I am not a newbie, but I lack the technical expertise to figure it out if it is there. Otherwise, it should be included to distinquish it from thousands of other free programs available. For that I would lay down cash. TJ

Thanks for today's giveaway! It is rather fortuitous timing. I Received a digital box (Netgear Digital Entertainer Live) for Christmas and I have been having fun adding media to it. Unfortunately I am still a rookie at it. I have discovered that there are some movies I have already ripped that are not compatible with it. I get error codes about frame rate and incompatible format quite frequently. Sadly I cannot find a "conversion settings for dummies" for my new toy. I am trying one of the presets I think might work, but I wish there was a profile for the new digital boxes available nowadays. Devices such as mine, the Western Digital media box, or Roku.

I wish the next version of this video converter at least will consider ASF format also.

#32: "Why are none of the featured products capable of Converting .wtv video files recorded with Windows Media Center"

Usually .wtv is Microsoft's DVR-MS with added DRM -- win7 includes a built-in converter to change .wtv to dvr-ms without re-encoding, & many apps that won't take .wtv will take that. That said, there are apps out there for conversions etc. that will now accept .wtv -- they're just not nearly as common AFAIK.

Note for those that are [or have friends/family that are] hearing impaired, getting CC out of .wtv for conversions is *much* more difficult, & when I've tried it the CC did not survive win7's .wtv -> drv-ms conversion.

* * *

#33: "Can someone tell me where I can find an explanation of all the video formats? "

Video [& audio for that matter] can get confusing. Start with what you want to do with the audio/video, then work backwards. If your end use will be on a hand-held or cell, or if you want to use one of those media player boxes that connects to your TV, or if you want something to stick on a disc for your DVD or BD player & so on, that determines most things re: formats.

Aiseesoft makes decent video apps, & their Total Media Converter is no exception. Quite a few files have been added or updated since the last version I have, with the main .exe file now showing a version 5.2.30.0. The app's web page does a good job of telling you what it does & doesn't do [it's linked at the top of today's GOTD page]. When it comes to performance it's generally fast -- not the fastest but not average either. Encoding speed varies according to what you import, with DVD frame sizes [720x480] working *much* faster than HD [1920x1080], & it works faster with mpeg2 input that AVC which is still faster than VC1. Quality of the results is good, without any of the stuttering or shuttering effects I've seen with a few recent GOTD's, especially during scenes with panning. Profile support is fair... still no 854x480 Droid video, & the bandwidth is too limited [won't go high enough] for a lot of HD encoding.

Installation is good, & fortunately Aiseesoft left out the Blu-Ray UDF driver install that came with their Blu-Ray Ripper. It can be made portable, to a point -- like many of these video apps today's TMC uses QT code, which means when you run it, it adds registry cache entries under Trolltech... the portableapps.com format will take care of existing registry entries, but you may not be able to prevent every new one from being added, *IF* that matters. Otherwise Aiseesoft TMC uses/adds one program key, & 1 uninstall key to the registry. The default output folder is added to [My] Documents, & you get Application [or App] Data folders for both the current User & All Users. The program's folder itself takes up ~45 MB with 71 files, 6 folders.

A couple of comments mention CUDA support... In a nutshell, apps with it might use the processing power of your NVIDIA graphics to make things go faster. AFAIK CUDA support is something built into current versions of the ffmpeg code libraries many video apps use [including today's GOTD], so it's not IMHO Aiseesoft favoring one graphics chip maker over another -- if you have a complaint, again IMHO, take it up with the ffmpeg developers. I don't run NVIDIA, so all I can do is tell you what I've read -- please verify for yourself -- & what I've read is that CUDA acceleration doesn't work for everyone, isn't always faster, & isn't always the same quality as doing your transcoding [converting] purely in software using your CPU. IOW if/when a video app offers CUDA acceleration, try it with & without & compare results. If you want to know if CUDA's even working for you, check out the free GPU-Z -- think of it as Task Mgr. for your graphics card/chip. OTOH if you run ATI & want to see what all the fuss concerning GPU acceleration is all about, Roxio apps have it for both NVIDIA & ATI, or look at ATI's converter packaged in their driver set, or try A's video converter. I *think* Cyberlink has it now for both brands of graphics chips, but while I have some Cyberlink apps, I don't like the encoding job they do [& I detest PowerDVD going out of Aero in 7 to play HD], so to be honest it's been quite some time since I've paid much attention to their product lineup.

After I selected the advanced install and deselected those options the install completed rather quickly. BUT!!!! My antivirus detected the Zugo Ltd(v) adware virus embedded in the program. Even though I scanned the download for viruses before I installed it, there was still a virus embedded in the program. Nope, it's just one of the many. Nice and simple interface but since it allows bitrate-based conversion only, I de-installed after two minutes.

It does NOT allow quality-based encoding (which means you'll have nasty artifacts instead of colorful explosions).

Downloaded, installed and registered just fine. This a different program than the previous Aiseesoft converter provided here awhile back. This program will install side by side with the other one. I'm assuming this one has more features, so I'm not sure if there's any reason to keep the older one.
Aiseesoft Total Media Converter is a really useful program and better than any of the free ones I've used including format factory.
Just one minor complaint. The program insists on opening split between my dual monitor set up, but this version appears to open the second time in the same spot as last used. Never seen that before on any program, but both Aiseesoft converter programs have this same issue.

To 33. totally clueless: I think if you don't know the difference between mp4 and AVI, you have way more to learn that what tips could be given here. You can use almost any format and it will work. The difference will be in which players it will work on, quality of the video and size of the video file that get stored on your computer.

Hey folks, stop and check before you post erroneous information. Also ask yourself why would GOTD post an OLDER version of any program? This offering is totally new and is a bundle of Aiseesoft's Video converter and DVD converter. The November offering was solely for the Video converter. See below from their website on this program:

Aiseesoft Total Media Converter is really the all-in-one media converter which is bundled of DVD Converter and Video Converter for multimedia users to convert video/audio files, rip DVD to any other video/audio formats like MPEG, AVI, MOV, FLV, SWF, MP3, AAC and any others.

#22: "I would like to have a video converter with: 1. Lossless trimming and joining"...

Cut editing [i.e. trimming/joining] can only be lossless when the input & output formats [frame size, bit rate, type of encoding, settings etc.] are identical. *Any* time you re-encode you'll have quality loss, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the formats & amount of compression used, but *It's always there*. To get around (or at least minimize) generational loss input higher quality than you want/need in the final result, e.g. you'll get better results encoding video for your hand-held or cell if you start with DVD quality rather than lower quality [not HD] YouTube.

Also realize that most video compression works by saving relatively few complete video frames -- most frames store just those parts of the picture that have changed from the previous frame. Cut editing on one of these incomplete frames is iffy, but some software can handle it with some formats, e.g. Womble apps & mpg2. With video editing software you'll sometimes see something called Smart Rendering -- basically that means parts that don't change aren't re-encoded -- but again it can be iffy if the source wasn't encoded using the same encoder [with the same settings] you're using to Smart Render.

"... when I download an flv file and I want to convert it to an AVI-file, the converter should automatically find for me the AVI-output that comes the closest to the quality of the original... huge output file (from 5mb to 50 mb) is very common."

Sorry -- that's asking any software to do too much with too little info or input from the user. To start with, an avi file is just a container, like .mov or .mkv that can hold video. An app would have to be clairvoyant frankly to *know* what you want, what you're going to use the newly encoded video for. Profiles &/or templates help, e.g. you want to put video on your iPhone, you choose an iPhone profile/template, but sometimes that's only a start... Bigger video frames look nicer but take more space to store than smaller frames. Lower bit rates mean smaller files but toss out more data to achieve those lower bit rates -- it's just like the quality setting when you save jpg images. So if you can use different frame sizes & bit rates [some devices can't], *you* have to decide if you want to store more video in smaller, lower quality files, or less video in higher quality, larger files. With something like your cell where you have limited storage, do you want 1 or 2 movies, or half a dozen, knowing that quality will be the trade-off?

When/if your output files are bigger than the original, that's because they store more data. One reason for more data is if you enlarged the video frames... another reason (very common with avi) can be the output format stores complete picture data for every frame, rather than just the stuff that changes frame-to-frame. That makes formats like varieties of DV &/or mjpeg good for editing, &/or as an intermediate that you'll encode to a smaller file(s) after editing, but they're not used much [if at all] for final delivery/distribution.

That said, be wary of any formats that Windows offers other than wmv -- they just all around stink. Also be a bit wary of Xvid, which is older tech that's easier to encode & decode [i.e. view], but isn't as efficient as AVC, nor as high a quality generally as DV or mjpeg etc. for intermediates. For DVD quality intermediates mjpeg works well, & is faster than some codecs like the free Lagarith. For HD there's a pack of free codecs from the people who make/sell Avid, though I like the free UTVideo better. A good compromise for either regular [SD] or HD video *can sometimes* be good old mpg2 at higher than you'll need [i.e. higher than the final] bit rates. [Note: if/when your encoding app won't take mpg2 input, if you have XP, look into dgmpgdec & VFAPI -- VFAPI Will work in win7 32 or 64 bit, but it can be a bit of work to get it working properly.]

I would like to have a video converter with:
1. Lossless trimming and joining
2. Optimum conversion quality, e.g. when I download an flv file and I want to convert it to an AVI-file, the converter should automatically find for me the AVI-output that comes the closest to the quality of the original flv source. It's easy to overdo it yourself: converting a shitty source file to a huge output file (from 5mb to 50 mb) is very common.

I was a bit disappointed that there were no profiles for the Cowon range of PMP's, but subsequently found it simple to make a profile for my Cowon S9, which I could then save. It converted a 20 minute animation in 3.5 minutes and I could tell no difference from the original. A very worthwhile program for me. Thank you GOTD and Aiseesoft.

such a good app, it's so versatile!
What's more important is that it supports not only DVD and Video formats and but also it supports the iPad.

What software combination from Aiseesoft do I need to be able to make backups for DVD movies I purchase. My reasons for this are:

1. I have kids that don't understand how fragile DVDs are. I had to purchase Wall-E twice because of this. Now, I make a backup DVD and put the original away from their little hands.
2. I have a whole-house DVR system. In the rooms that have the proper receiver, or computer, I can play movies from the DVR. I now take movies I buy and convert then to a digital format (MPEG, ISO, etc.) and upload them to the DVR.

A tool that will allow me to convert a DVD (for use as listed in 1 & 2) would be very useful.
