# 48 Thanks for the response. I have downloaded and tried at least 3 dozen programs ranging from just converters like this to full blown video editing programs (such as Pinnacle HD studio). The output quality ranges from decent to completely unacceptable. I've done a lot of reading on this and it seems strange to me that converting from a 1080i source to a 480i output is so difficult since down converting still images from a high res to lower res (within reasonable limits) is so easy and retains a decent level of quality. Of all the programs I've tried, Pinnacle did it the best but it still had a little noise. I'm not really interested in doing a lot of titling and fancy transitions but just basic editing/cropping and batch converting.

Actually I have already many free video converter in hand, like Any video converter, Winx video converter, and so many others. I did not see any great difference between them.

Well the mystery Startup group folder disappeared on its own. I'm guessing that this is a Vista glitch, not an Aimersoft glitch.

"#47 - #3: “It seems that if you want to convert DVD, you need other software such as Aimersoft DVD Ripper.”

From DVD on your hard drive, copy (not size) the title video using DVD Shrink with preferences set to *Not* split VOB files. This will give you one large VOB file you can import into Aimersoft HD Video Converter."

There is no need to convert the VOB files into one giant VOB file. Just select all the VOB files when you are adding video files to the project and select the merge into one file option on the lower right hand part of the screen.

Any DVD ripper will do the trick, and there seems to be at least one a week on GAOTD, so if you don't like DVD Decrypter, you'll have a chance to download one eventually.

I'm a video nubbie, so forgive me. I've downloaded the software and I've looked at the 19.95 GAOTD upgrade offer. I have a new Sony HD -hard drive camera. In plain language what's the benefit (other than ripping from a DVD in upgrading? Thanks, in advance.

I liked it so much.. I just bought the Aimersoft video converter ultimate deal for $19.95, it sure seems like a good-faith offer from them for a usually $69.95 package.

I like them and the documentation of this company, and have been hoping for a way to tie them together; No, it’s not free, but seems a darn good price.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU and a round of applause, please, everyone, for the wonderfully educational comments from "mike" here today.

I've been doing video conversions for about 3 years -- to get programs from my Comcast DVR onto my computer and then compressed into DivX format for archiving and watching later. I don't play with handhelds etc., I just want to be able to go back later and the DVR fills up too fast. So I want a "workflow" that has the minimum steps and that can use batch mode whenever possible. Spending 10 minutes of my real time on each program is way too much overhead.

I've played with a lot of different programs. Right now I use a Dazzle USB capture device, Pinnacle Instant DVD Recorder (came with the Dazzle) to get a DVD-format directory of VOB files etc. Dr. DivX will take a stack of VOB files at one time from those folders and give me the DivX I want.

I also use VirtualDub to display the Comcast info screen which I then capture using Ctrl+Alt+PrtScr and I have a script that automatically edits the window image using Paint. (Unfortunately, vDub only captures single frames in Edit mode, not in Capture mode as when it's reading from the Dazzle. Recommendations on a free input-frame grabber would be welcome.) Keeping the Comcast info slides next to the DivX files makes it very easy to flip through and see which episode is which. I highly recommend something like that for any big collection because you can't pack enough info into a file name. (And in the remote possibility that the question would ever come up, the Comcast info screens prove that I paid for the content.)

Anyway, back to my main point after describing where I'm coming from:

I feel like I've learned more from "mike" here today than from any other single source in all the time that I've been playing with this stuff.

Thank you, mike.

Image and text watermark is right now an either/or feature.

Overall, the product is acceptable. The text watermark is only for one line. It would be nice if it allows for more lines. It would also be nice to allow for both image and text watermark.

The ability to retain the special effects on files for merging of the files is a good feature.

The sensitivity of the brightness, contrast and saturation buttons should allow for manual key-in rather than using the sliders, because the sliders are not sensitive enough for precise adjustment. Try it out and you will know what I mean.

One final comment. After conversion, the quality of the converted video is less sharp. I was using a flv format to convert to a mp4 format, and from the preview screen, I can notice that the quality is less sharp than the original flv file.

Conversion speed is acceptable.

Good
Installed and works well on Win Vista. Convert peed is relatively fast. Both video and sound are ketp in sync.

Not so good
Trim function is a little tricky to make it work corectly. No support for Win Media Center dvr-ms files.

Works pretty well. but a couple of things:

1) I can't add sub-titles! The option to enable that 'plugin' is gray-ed out!

2) Cropping - It would be nice when cropping if it would automatically select the correct height when I enter in a number for the width, to maintain aspect ratio.

#3: "It seems that if you want to convert DVD, you need other software such as Aimersoft DVD Ripper."

From DVD on your hard drive, copy (not size) the title video using DVD Shrink with preferences set to *Not* split VOB files. This will give you one large VOB file you can import into Aimersoft HD Video Converter.

* * *

#11: "I was looking for something to convert my HD videos to a more smaller file size... This is perfect for uploading to youtube."

FWIW, YouTube takes up to 1080p & creates smaller versions for you.

* * *

#16: "What are the main features Aimersoft has that FormatFactory does not?"

FF has a much larger effect on Windows -- it won't always play nice with other video apps installed. Aimerisoft uses the MainConcept encoder, which is used by $500+ video software. FF is a bit more *Geeky*, letting you customize your output more. I can't use FF, so I've no idea about import formats accepted by FF & how they compare.

* * *

#17: "I end up re-encoding a lot of improperly created AVI’s with VBR audio... Is there anything that will handle MP3 VBR audio without having to do this?"

For most avi Save-as the audio from VirtualDub using Direct Stream. Convert to CBR [Constant Bit Rate], using a tool like LameXP(?). Import that into V/Dub, optionally set any offset as needed, then save-as the avi again using Direct Stream for both audio & video. Or you can try to do the VBR/CBR audio conversion direct in V/Dub -- mileage varies.

* * *

#18: "My biggest problem is converting AVCHD files to SD... Most programs like this only produce progressive output which looks bad when played on a DVD/TV. While this program does produce interlaced output, the MPEG-2 conversion is terrible and loaded with interlace artifacts during movement."

1st off, check out AviSynth [possibly using VirtualDub as well] for the re-size & possible fps changes. Please realize that there's no way to go from 720p or 1080p to an interlaced DVD-spec mpg2 that looks exactly like broadcast TV. Oversimplified, interlaced TV frames have a sort of ghost image that's part way between the current frame & the next. There are ways to fake it that come Very close, but it gets complicated... AviSynth is extremely popular, & there are all sorts of posts & guides on-line of different methods to do just what you want.

Or you can just do 25 or 29.976 [PAL/NTSC] progressive DVD video, where looking bad or not is the viewer's opinion. Or often you can use Inverse Telecine to drop fps back to film, adding pull-down (flags to repeat frames) like most every retail Video DVD. Long story short, it'll take you some time to research & try out a couple of different methods, but it's a 1-time deal -- once you get set-up it's often just a matter of repeating the same steps every time. And by using frame-serving with AviSynth, you can in effect import your original video, only at DVD frame sizes & fps, into the Aimersoft Converter if you wanted for editing & encoding to DVD mpg2.

The questions and comments about DVD output are quite clearly answered in advance in the first post by the publisher (interestingly plagiarized word for word by a subsequent user post) which states that it can't convert DVDs. Now I take that to mean DVD format, not just what you have just ripped from a DVD moments ago.

For the other questions about what it will and will not do, how it compares to Format Factory, etc., Ashraf answered those in his review in the second post of the day. The one problem with his posts on GOTD is that they are mere summaries of his rather extensive reviews of each program. He gets these programs at least a day in advance and has time to evaluate them well and compare them to similar freeware listing pros and cons of each, and he posts that at the end of each review. But his reviews are entirely to long to post here so what you see is the bare bones summary with the link to the review.

By the questions about this and many previous program offerings, a lot of people do not click that link and take advantage of the reviews. And that's quite understandable - it's easier to read a short blurb than a several page, multiple screen shot illustrated review. But for the most part, that is where many of the answers are.

It takes about one and a half hours to convert one AVI to MP4. So I have yet to review the output. It takes a bit too long for me to use this program. And once you start one conversion you can't add another until it is completed. I have another converter that does the conversion for one AVI in about 15 minutes. Overall though the features look good and the 70% discount offer on their ultimate program is a good deal.

Installed and activated on Vista Home Premium. The installation screwed up my Start Menu. It created a new group called Programs, copied all my Start Menu entries into this new group, then installed in the Programs group. Not sure how to fix this yet, since it doesn't appear this can be deleted. Not impressed with the install.

Aimersoft HD Video Converter is simply a very nice, easy to use app. Basically it's the standard sort of video converter GOTD regulars are used to -- though done better than many -- with support added for HD import/export. It's main faults, if you could call them that, is that it could be faster & it could give you just a bit more output flexibility... the main difference between HD & regular video [what you see on a standard TV], is that HD is bigger, but with some of the HD-spec sizes/formats, your frame rate also doubles. You can go to 60 fps [Frames per Second] encoding avi, but not 50 (sorry EU), & not with other formats. You can output AC3 stereo [not 5.1], but only if your video's going to be mpg2. Those limits aside, if you've got a camera that records HD video, you might really welcome the increased number of input formats -- many folks have a terrible time just getting the video they shot into video software.

While Aimersoft HD Video Converter can up-sample regular video to HD, you don't normally want to, in any software. Making video bigger does not increase the number of pixels that were recorded originally -- it just spreads them out and fills-in-the-blanks by guessing. An up-sampling DVD player, or your PC's graphics hardware does an equal if not better job, in *Real-Time* as you watch -- it happens every time you watch a DVD & click the full-screen button. You can spend hours encoding to make your video bigger, & the only difference is you spent hours instead of just hitting Play, *plus* your PC's CPU might choke trying to process the larger frames when you do play it back.

You'll probably want to run GOTD's Activate as administrator in Vista/7, to allow the app to write what it needs to in Windows' registry. Aimersoft HD Video Converter is self-contained, with no additions to Windows, so near zero impact to Windows, taking up ~40 MB with 136 files, 10 folders in the program's folder. It includes /uses the MainConcept encoder -- a very definite plus. It seems to work fine in Win7 64, but *once* I did have it freeze up as I was exploring the output profiles, so you may need to run as admin(?). It will import VOB files, so you can with little fuss put DVD video on supported handhelds [Note: run DVD Shrink to copy from one folder to another, setting preference to *NOT* split VOB files -- this gives you 1 VOB file to import into whatever app.]

You can also do some simple editing in Aimersoft HD Video Converter, cropping, re-sizing, & trimming your video. You can add a watermark, adjust color, & apply a few simple FX. It comes with an actual help file, that tells you subtitle features in the editor only work for mkv files. Encoding 1080p from mpg2 to H264 was slow, but it's going to be -- that's a lot of pixels in a slow to encode format. It didn't help that only one CPU core (out of 4) was working on it. The fastest encoders make use of your graphics hardware, as ATI Stream or Nvidia Cuda technology can make a very big difference, but it's still new & not many have it.

If you record ATSC or DVB HD video, & simply want to cut it down to DVD size, I suggest checking out AviSynth -- you can use it to do any cropping/re-sizing on-the-fly, so software like today's converter only has to deal with DVD-sized video. There's a one-time, slight learning curve to figure out & set-up the basic script file [cut & paste really], but it can make everything else both faster & simpler.

This program (formerly known as Wondershare) is one of a very few apps that required booting to my old Win XP disk (now using Win7 x64), due to the GOTD install requirements.

I haven't delved into the more complex features of the proggie, but it does trim videos and transcode (including to just audio) uneventfully. It's a keeper.

#9, this GOTD program can convert the format to an HD format, but it does not claim to enhance the video. The converted-to-HD-format version may be blurry or blocky compared to a real HD video. This is not a flaw in this program, that's just how it is, it's only converting the format the simplest and fastest way.

This shareware program, Video Enhancer:

http://www.thedeemon.com/VideoEnhancer/

Uses a technique to "up-res" SD video to HD while using a technique to interpolate the sharpness to make it seem more like real HD. Samples on its page show what it can do, and it does work. You can download a trial version.

Another shareware program is vReveal which uses similar up-res techniques and more enhancement techniques, but you cannot load or enhance an original HD video file, you can only load SD or "smaller" video and upsize/up-res it to an HD format. Trial version available.

http://vreveal.com/

(I have nothing to do with either company. But the up-res technique used in these programs works.)

These programs only work AVI-to-AVI for example. So from either of these you might still need today's GOTD program or Format Factory to convert again to the format you want for DVD burning or specific video players.

I think Wondershare's is much faster at converting, but Aimersoft's gives a much better quality.
