It sounds like your problem lies more in the BIOS. Try and edit the setting in the BIOS menu and see if the problem disappears.

@21 fran, as you didn't say which version of windows you're using, it is difficult to know how to help you, but it sounds to me like your boot manager is corrupted. Windows Vista and Windows 7 have a Startup Repair option that you can use if you have a copy of your Windows installation disk. With Windows XP, it's a little more difficult and not for the novice. In either case you'll want to unplug your USB drives before attempting the repair.

Hi again, Ref to my own earlier Comment(#21) and those of Others'.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one interesting more in Startup (at scheduled times) rather than Shutdown (and Software(s) capable of performing this task)

Several Users mentioned altering BIOS for this Task (in my case, XP Pro - it's "del" key straight at Startup), but - for more specific instructions on what exactly to look for in there - please simply Google up subject: "Can BIOS make my computer boot at a specific time?" I did, and it led me to some interesting facts, methods, util tools (mostly free:) a.s.o

Some of us are interesting in this "trivial" to most subject - others having problems with booting might help themselves to sort out a nightmare of PC crashes and Systems hanging in loops at Windows Startup.. - or indeed only in simple "PC ready for me" when I get up:) Thanks for Today's opportunity to learn more! As always: Caution! when altering your BIOS (or Registry..), learn some facts first, and if you're not sure at all - DON'T F10 and exit from BIOS.

I use to use a .bat program that turned the machine off each night at the same time, but I found it often became a nuisance. Then I started using Wizmo with WinTV's remote to shut the computer down with a remote control.

There are plenty of ways to shut down a computer, but what's really needed is some way to turn it on automatically. Maybe something that could put the computer into sleep mode then "wake" it and trigger an alarm. That's where the real money's at.

Shutdown is easy. But try to log off automatically. Thanks GOTD for this great application. Today it is only $8.48 for those of you threaten to pay if cheaper.

I agree with Giovanni (you dropped your title there), it doesn't deserve the massive thumbing down. Native windows commands do not offer all the functionality in this app, unless you're willing to batch/script it all out yourself. This app could be extremely usefull in an internet-cafe or a corporate environment.
$25 however is too much for personal use imho and besides, I have no use for this type of app. Nevertheless, thanks to GOTD and AgataSoft.

$25? Really? For a single function utility? And a seldom needed one at that; I'm at a loss for why I would ever need to schedule a shut down when the off button is less than a meter away. I see some commenters saying they use this type of program, but it would be useless to me personally. I would say cut the price to $5.99 and give away something else with it. I would have to judge it as having very low general appeal, not enough of a specific audience to support it, so maybe think about using it as a "feature" in another more robust program instead.
