Another alternative is KeyText. Can be used for creating & assigning macros triggered by keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys and hottext/text-triggers (like ";ms " = "Microsoft Sucks" and/or action beyond just pasting or typing). It supports Windows (Win) key combos too -- for the trigger and/or the action.

Granted, KeyText has been around for many years now, and is quite dated. But for the most part, it's still functional, and can recognize window titles too (for automatic dismissals, entry of login, and much more).

The only thing I've found it cannot do any longer, at least in WinXP-SP3, is to operate menus directly, by coding in the menu labels. BUT there's almost always a workaround because most program menus can be operated via "ALT+_" key combos and/or tab & space key sequences.

Oh, and even though I wrote "coding in" just now, the KeyText macro language is absurdly simple. And you don't even need to know it or type it because there's a simple wizard-like GUI dialog window that will enter the code for you...

Finally, KeyText used to cost like $12 to $20. Might be the same still. Or might just be free because it's not been updated for several years as far as I know. (But on my PC, it still loads w/ Windows, and I still use it most every day.)

There's nothing else like it, really. It's an oddball that does lotsa stuff, and has a kinda weird interface -- esp the A-Z windows. But I have a soft spot for oddball programs which were designed to fill gaps or needs where nothing else existed. As opposed to duplicating other programs to try to get in the profits.

I shouldn't have to say this, but for the cynical among you, I assure you that I have no ties to any software company or program or programmers other than as a customer. (Oh, and I once dated a programmer from Gartner. But she didn't create consumer apps -- just consumer-research apps.)

Is that only in XP ?
In Win7, there’s no “Assign Hotkey”.

All versions of Windows, whether it be Xp, Vista or 7 have the option to set hotkeys.

The only thing this program offers over the standard Windows Properties > Shortcut is the ability to open a folder using a hot key. Unfortunately, I don't feel that it useful enough to remain on my PC. Thumbs down and uninstalling the program.

Well, honestly I can’t understand why this program got so many negative comments and ratings so far.

Ok…it’s not bug free but, for what it does, for sure it deserves much more than 20% THUMBS UP!!

That being said, as always, with the right tools & tips, PC users can do the same things as this GAOTD for FREE!!!

For instance, to organize your Windows desktop icons easily, just use the award-winning and hassle-free freeware FENCES:

http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

Want to launch your frequent programs with a couple of mouse clicks?

If so, let’s give the excellent portable freeware “QuickCliq” a whirl:

http://apathysoftworks.com/software/qc

Full review here:
http://dottech.org/freeware-reviews/27794/quick-cliq-is-a-multi-function-portable-app-launcher-and-productivity-tool/

Alternatively, less advanced users may find handier give LaunchDock and/or LINX a try:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Launchers-Shutdown-Tools/LaunchDock-Pulsar.shtml

http://code.google.com/p/linx-lists/

But how about a FREE launcher which can recognise any program you want to run through MOUSE GESTURES?? Yes dudes, you heard me righ: MOUSE GESTURES….LOL!!

Too good to be true?? Certainly not:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Launchers-Shutdown-Tools/Gesture-Magic.shtml

Enjoy!!

I like to use the least amount of key clicks possible to open programs.
So with that in mind I just right click on an open area of the desk top and select new/shortcut and fill in the info to open the program I want to open right from the desktop.

From then on I don't have to press three keys or remember what keys to even press and it's FREE! Oh and you can have as many as you want.

@ #18
Thanks for that download for "Hot Key Plus." It does exactly what I need and missed from WINKEY that jpermitone mentioned. Hey Everyone if you want an easy to use utility that allows you to "hotkey" your WINKEY to assign shortcuts see #18's comment. Hot Key Plus is a FIND.

THANKS AGAIN
PS. No disrespect to today's offer intended, I just needed something else and thanks GOTD. For everybody else, I like the helping spirit to help newbies and others along. Also the developer could really learn what's needed to make his program more versitile -- take the work (as little as it maybe) out of making those shortcuts. (SEE HOT KEY PLUS @18.

THANKS AGAIN #18 "Another Old Guy".
