Isaiah's link to firefox addon Checkplaces didn't work, I had to use the addon search to find it (at exactly the same location, go figure).

From the comments, i think I'll pass as I have a workable alternate 3-part solution, that answers other needs at the same time.

First, I use FF add-on PlainOldFavorites. It links into the IE favorites so that IE and FF share them. I have file compression turned on for the Favorites folder to reduce unused allocated file space.

Second, I use the disk file search tool called Everything, http://www.voidtools.com/ . It ties into the Windows file system and does nearly instantaneous file name searches. MUCH MUCH faster than Windoze built in file name search. Using IE Favorites instead of bookmarks creates separate (tiny) disk files for each favorite. Using Everything means that every time I do a filename search it includes my favorites (which is what I want since I'm looking for all resources on the topic).

Finally I use as separate tool to occasionally scan for duplicates and dead links. ie I use AM-Deadlink 3.3 from http://aignes.com/deadlink.htm. I have a fast internet connection so I bump up the number of concurrent connections it can install to vastly speed up the search through at last count my 6000+ favorites.

I use the freeware tool AM-Deadlink: supports IE, Firefox and Opera; checks bookmarks, detects dead links and duplicates, shows redirects, downloads favicons, has a search option for my favorites and so on. Works well for me in XP and Vista. Download through www.aignes.com

Not really useful.

1. I use google bookmarks
2. Bookmarklet: I have a Add to Google bookmarklet in my quick access toolbar and i simply click on the bookmarklet to automatically add (categorize) it on google.
3. My bookmarks are available to me on any internet connected browser.

#5 Opera developers protect Opera code, so software developers can't create any add-ons. This is Opera policy, this is not that programmers are lazy or something.

#26 - A much more useful comment than #7. Saying "Just do a search" is fine if you know what you are searching for - but many readers here won't know if the Firefox addon that they found is the one you were thinking of, or if there is a better one that they might have missed.

I'm sure many other readers appreciate you including the extra information (as the ratings for #7 and #26 might indicate).

Thanks.

#8, a simple search will tell you if you're actually curious and not just being contrary, but like another commenter I use CheckPlaces (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10897), which looks for duplicates, empty folders, and dead links. It also installs favicons (the little bookmark icons) for sites that have them, a feature that is missing on AURLC as far as I can tell.

Grabbing all tabs into bookmarks can be done with Bookmark Current Tab Set (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9027), although I personally don't see a need for that.

Every other feature -- importing, exporting, organizing, adding, bookmark searching -- is already a core Firefox feature, and is included in the free browser installation.

While we're on the subject of useful Firefox bookmark add-ons, I use IndentFavIcon to generate icons for sites that don't have them. Much nicer than that little white page.

All of these add-ons are so memory-efficient as to be nonexistent, and don't require a separate program running as they integrate seamlessly into the browser itself. They are free and supported by their developers. Best of all, Firefox add-ons don't try to hijack your homepage.

Advanced URL Catalog may work fine for many folks, but I got scared away...

To start with, the developers' web site -- not usually a big concern for me -- appears to be a fill-in-the-blank affair, with many blanks left empty. Downloads are hosted on CNET. Software without a site doesn't bother me. I don't normally worry about poor English or sites without any real developer info, but the lack of effort not bothering to remove empty pages or host *any* downloads does.

At the very least there's one thing about .NET that can be a BIG pain... if/when an app screws it up, you have to uninstall & reinstall, which is VERY time consuming given the size of the .NET downloads & number of patches, re-boots etc. It's a rare, last resort sort of thing, but IMHO reason enough to be especially careful about installing .NET apps. IMHO, Advanced URL Catalog looks a bit *iffy*...

Installation starts off a bit odd with the same msi file in 2 places -- not a problem but not the way things are done either. Advanced URL Catalog's installation includes 4 Microsoft .dll files in 8 Windows' WinSxS sub-folders -- that's OK, but including them again in Windows' System32 folder is not... Google led me to a page on MSDN where they talk about this exact *work-a-round*, & how you should compile your app correctly to avoid it. The bulk of its ~37 MB in the program's folder is made up of files from Developer Express Inc., which is a company selling apps & code to speed up software development. Nothing *wrong* with that, but it's mostly used by in-house IT -- not experienced coders... I can't remember the last time I saw something like this used in a commercial app. All in all, thanks -- but no thanks.

Brilliant, I needed something like this for a long time. My only complaint is that it doesn't import chrome and safari but I already exported those so no biggie.

Hmpf. So this program is still fiddling around with your home page? I have to wonder if it still changes your search provider as well. Last time I tried this it did both and then made it harder than it needed to be to change things back.
When are programmers going to write programs that ONLY do what they are advertised to do by default, and ASK THE USER before doing anything else, and I mean anything else at all, including spawning icons in every conceivable corner of Windows?
I was willing to give this program another try, but when I read that it still changes the home page by default, it failed my criteria, and should fail yours for just that reason.

I just don't know about this program. I really enjoy being able to download and install full working versions of programs from this site. It allows me to use the programs with no restrictions and if I find that I really have a need for the program, I usually will purchase. If I don't need the program, I will uninstall. I don't know what the problem is with this software but, I downloaded, installed and I even did a re-boot (PAIN in the you know where)(No the program did force a re-boot); I did it to see if the program would come up as "Registered" after a re-boot. This program only shows as an "evaluation". NOT NICE.

I downloaded this program and played with it a little. Not a bad design. It looks like Office 2007. It's very easy to figure out how to use.

However, I think 16 MB PLUS the fact you have to have .NET 2.0 is ridiculous. If you don't already have .NET, then you are talking about installing 38 MB of stuff to organize your favorites.

If this program were portable and not dependent on .NET, it would be much more useful.

Its not often that I disagree with Ashrafs opinion but I do this time. He gives 3 instances of "Bad Behaviour". #1 During installation, Advanced URL Catalog has an option already checked where it changes your homepage to the developer's homepage: Of course you can opt-out of it, but there is absolute no need to have that kind of thing in the first place. #2. On the developer's website, he/she lists a link to download his/her software "from Download.com", but the link does not lead to Download.com but rather to the developer's own download section. #3. The developer includes links to his/her website in the default profile/database. You can always delete them but still the developer really shouldn't be infiltrating your bookmarks like that." Ashraf then gives the program a rating of GOOD. For the first instance of bad behaviour alone I would not install this program - what else is it doing? Also some less savvy users may not know how to change back to their home page.

Downloaded, tried and am not at all impressed. As Ashraf’s comment states this prog is very memory intensive (note to developers - just because today's machines come with more memory doesn't mean you have to write programs hat use it all). Think I'll stick to firefox and the google toolbar add-in, yes it keeps your bookmarks online but you can sort your bookmarks very accurately and you can access them from any computer with an internet connection.

online + security = oxymoron. Put your faith in the cloud and it will rain on you eventually.

if you want it done right do it yourself- otherwise, why bother?

It'll get smeared.

this thing claims win2k ok some places, others not. so far install went well, imported my firefox 3.5.3 bookmarks... but it's more than a tad slooow and touchy on win2k sp4 and 1 gig ram. so far. it will grab your homepage if you let it, and it will autostart with windows if you don't head it off at the pass.

hmmm... testing comes later when I've cooled down. homepage says 2.13 is latest, this may be the GAOTD build #.

Tidyfavorites free might be interesting. but it does lack some things in the pro version which costs 19.99 of unspecified units.

URL gather looks pretty biased to IE. Yuk.

Linkman lite looks like it's gotta do a round-robin to get the bookmarks back into firefox 3.x, and also is limited in some ways compared to the $25 full package.

Xmarks is an online service. no way jose.

Strange how many totally useless software is been created all the time, also this we really don’t need as a much better and totally free way to store your favrites is to create your personal password protected Coolstart online webdirectory (e.g. http://webdesign.coolstart.nl ) so your favorites available wherever you are on any pc. Sorry this software has no use really.

#7 "you can duplicate all of these features with a free add-on or two." Fantastic so what you are saying is "another program does the same as this one"? Hmm, that doesn't really help anyone.

If you are going to mention "a free add-on of two", go as far as to actually name these addons and match them up to program features.

Users who haven't already committed the list of available firefox addons to memory will thank you.

If you're using firefox, you can duplicate all of these features with a free add-on or two. And if you're not using firefox, you should be.

Since this is a minor upgrade from the previous version, which didn't work correctly, I was only interested in checking the installation, compared to the previous version. I don't really care if the broken things were fixed, since this doesn't do anything that interests me. It adds a couple of empty registry entries and deletes the Internet Explorer Start Page. I block its Internet access because it defaults to checking bookmarks at intervals.

Ref Ashraf's comment regarding Opera.

I fail to understand why most of these software developers try to ignore Opera.

I use Opera mainly, for a simple reason. When it comes to downloading from a site, Opera is the best. It shows the link address of the file being downloaded, so that I can capture it and provide it to a download manager to get a faster download. Also, I know where the download file is going to be placed. In the case of IE, I have to search for the goddamn file once the downloading is finished.

Simply because IE comes with Windows like fleas with a dog, is not a reason to support it alone, at the expense of others.

Why would you need such a large download to make a favorites program. There are many that are much slimer and work very well and most are free all the time.

The program is showing up as an evaluation version and I can't even try it out in that mode because the "Try" button in the initial dialog is grayed out.

There is no separate Activate.exe, the GAOTD wrapper showed no registration info after the install, and there is likewise no registration info in the included readme.txt file.

And, yes, I did run the installer with Administrator privileges.

Am I the only one having this problem?

The Good
* Straightforward and fairly easy to use.
* Can import bookmarks from Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, HTML file, and Del.icio.us.
* Can export bookmarks to Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, HTML file, Del.icio.us.
* Can grab URLs, and add them, from all active browsers.
* Allows you to create multiple different databases/profiles.
* Has a built in search tool.
* Can check for, and remove, dead links and duplicates.
* Allows user to add website login information (if applicable), and comments for each bookmark.
* Can "auto check" for bookmark validity on a scheduled basis.

The Bad
* Grabbing URLs does not work with Opera (v10.00).
* Sometimes has trouble detecting when Firefox tabs are no longer open (when grabbing URLs).
* Fairly RAM intensive.
* Has a built in web browser but the browser does not have any sort of direct link (for adding bookmarks) to the bookmark portion of the program so what is the point of the browser?
* Lacking any sort of password protection feature.
* Can't find some features the developer claims to have included such as "creates thumbnail images of your favorite websites" or the "drop basket".
* No Help file (local or remote).
