#31 Please don't be unfair to Giovanni. Occasionally something, which we can query, doesn't add up but we don't need to be totally spoon-fed! His contributions are always welcome and we actually do need other suggested software to make worthwhile comparisons with the GOTD offer. What suits one individual may not suit another - it may well depend on how their system is configured.

Keep up the good work, Giovanni, and thank you once again GOTD for giving us the opportunity to evaluate so many free offerings.

PS - I had managed to figure out that it was WinSysClean V2. It is now installed and seems to be working OK with Vista Home Premium. Cleaningwise, other than catering for the specified software programs in the menu it doesn't seem to have the facility to add other ones of your personal choice. I haven't had a chance to fully evaluate this so perhaps there may be some way of doing it which I haven't yet noticed.

Been using CCleaners reg cleaner pretty much monthly for years with NO problems. If you know what you're doing try:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Registry-Tweak/RegSeeker.shtml
It even found all the crap left over from an Acronis uninstall that had buggered up my system. None of the others mentioned, or Windows own search or regedit even came close. As for todays, I'll pass.

My favorite that was not mentioned is Eusing registry cleaner. It works and the results are are reversible if you don't like it and it is free.
I don't have time to try any lite or sugar free softwares I pass on this offer.

Giovani - thanks for your daily recommendations but please don't post unless you're sure they are valid; now I have to uninstall your "USRO" suggestion since the code cannot be entered anywhere.

#16 Giovanni - WinSysClean - Got activation code OK but strangely enough there is nothing on site about any free offer. I downloaded prog via your link and installed but there is no way on software to input the registration code! Help on "Registration" just directs me to their site but only to purchase full product! Can you say which site is running this offer?

Thanks

BearPup (#13): You're already sitting at your computer. Would it kill you to use Google? The people suggesting freeware are doing so as a kindness, it isn't their job. Google the software mentioned and the first hit is usually the homepage. Googling is also a smart idea because the serial freeware posters here, like Giovanni, etc., will do the same. They just google, copy and paste without looking to see if their suggestions are even relevant to what GOTD is offering. So you're better off taking a couple of extra minutes and learning about a program on your own.

There is so little value in cleaning the registry and so much risk of screwing up the system that I would *never* trust a program like this.

There are 3 that I *do* trust, however, because I've used them all without problem. All are free and all are uncommon. You can find all of them on cNet or SoftPedia:

Puran Utilities - A suite of very effective programs; all among the best of breed at what they do. The disk defrag is the best there is at any price. The registry cleaner is gentle and seems to work without problem.

ToolWiz - Another suite of very effective (and diverse) programs. This has just about anything you would want, including (what seems to be) a safe registry cleaner. It's more aggressive than Puran or Privazer below so use more care but it seems to not cause any problems.

Privazer - This is an alternative to cCleaner that is *much* more thorough in cleaning disk junk. Like cCleaner, it also cleans the registry but it seems much less aggressive and much safer. It is brilliant and you should try it.

Crashes on Win 7 HP 64-bit. Almost no features and before it crushed it found on 30 errors whilst other programs found more, fixed (without spoiling anything) and defragged the registry. This programme isn't surely worth it's price...

I also got an error on installation. There are 20 or so free programs that do the same thing. GOTD shouldn't have even bothered with this one. I am seeing too many install errors on some of these free programs.

I've been using the freebie CCleaner for some years without a glitch, and made a few donations to say 'Thanks'.
CCleaner gives the option to back up before fixing any issues found, but I've never had the need to do a restore.
Elcor could do worse than list what advantages this GOTD has over CCleaner.

This continuing nonsense about "Advanced" and "PRO" and "Lite" really does irritate -- and especially when Unadvanced Not-Quite-PRO software hoves into view, like this from Elcor, a £19.95 retail offering that's a complete non-starter for anyone who values their wallet as well as their computer.

As has been pointed out here time and again, there is no *definitive* Registry Cleaner / Optimizer out there. What actually exists is a wagon-load of stuff coded in different ways according to the different tastes of different individual developers, as a result of which the scans of some will find a lot of "errors" but others, hardly any "errors" at all.

Safety, not scan results, is all that matters. Though there will always be the naive and the gullible who think the more "errors" flagged up by a cleaner, the more superior it must be, thankfully most users nowadays appreciate that more computers have probably been wrecked by registry "cleaning" than by almost any other software.

Today's offering, stripped as it is of the, er, "PRO" facility to make a full registry backup before "cleaning", may do all it claims. But there's no wealth of evidence to demonstrate that it does so safely: the preposterous $19.95 that someone who downloads today would have to pay tomorrow if they needed to re-install brings with it no comfort whatsoever.

By contrast, long, long, long established freeware such as Piriform's CCleaner does just that: its multi-million strong user base, and the feedback from those users over many years, means its in-built registry cleaning facility has been refined and re-refined again and again.

It's the only scanner I use -- and only on very, very rare occasions -- because experience has shown that it's among the least "aggressive" out there, and thus least likely to inflict harm.

But then again: I'm no fan of this kind of software. No developer yet born is psychic, so cannot possibly know the configuration of my computer (or yours, or anyone else's)and how all the installed programs and services inter-act with each other. That developer's notion of what is an "error" in my registry may actually be so far wide of the mark as to totally screw up that unique inter-dependency.

Bottom line: thanks GAOTD, but no thanks. Today's cleaner does nothing that existing freeware (CCleaner,in my case) doesn't already achieve -- and as for the developer's sheer nerve in describing as "Advanced" and "PRO" something that doesn't even facilitate quick and easy registry backup, words fail . . .

Backup is the most essential part. Every software has bugs. If this one deletes the wrong keys/values you have no way to easily restore the previous state w/o the mentioned backup.

According to their website, the lite version is only missing part of the backup functionality from the regular version, which costs $5.00 more. Also noticed their other current products include a registry defragger and a RAM tweaker, neither of which I would use now, but I do remember having one of their programs on my old single-core and thinking that it helped, but I'm not sure which one it was.

A light edition that fixes registry errors. It works as intended but is not fully featured of that which GOTD previously hosted Elcor Softwares Premium Booster which is a full featured all in one computer diagnostic suite.

Note , GOTD mentions the professional edition in their description while this is a lite version so according to GOTD description its not known whats between the light version and the pro edition. But if you check here:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/advanced-registry-doctor/#more-23452

You can see a review of the previous version from Ashraf at Dot Tech.

As always I suggest everyone become familiar with the system restore function of their computer before using any program that fixes the registry, thats no easy piece of cake!
