Hi, normally I don't write a comment when I have not installed the GOTD, however today I have to answer two "reviewers" who too haven't anything written about the tool.
@ #21 ww2vet56 and @ #22 A :
Both of you are right and are not right regarding the comments. Some commentators are gone others have joined the community. It is ridiculous to quote numbers of a pseudo statistic as if this would be of any evidence. "9 of 10 quality comment posters have left" and how many have joined? Sometimes "Real Live" forces people to change their habits.
None of the users who posts a review are somehow affiliated with GOTD or GGOTD,there is no "dedicated professional reviewer", all of them are volunteers just as the moderators and administrators of the Forums. And as WitheRabbit aka Stephen. He posts the free games he has found in the WWW when he will, when his computers will, when the telecom will, when the sun is shining or the snow falls in thick flakes. He is the "Guru" of the games community with a lot of "co-gamers" who posts games as well. These activities have nothing to do with the quality of the daily Giveaways. Only with a great love to games and with the joy at sharing their treasures.

Installs & runs fine on xp pro media edition sp 2. Does what it says, easy & simple. A nice helper to have! :) Actually, I needed this right now. THANK YOU!!! Other reviwers/commenters above pretty much said it all. It's a keeper!

Dunno, thanks BuBBy and Ashraf,(your comments make a lot of sense) Personally I have no need for this program so I'll give it a miss, I can see where if you have a home network or an unsecured LAN setup this program would serve a purpose. Um #21 hah!~(just shakes his head sadly)

Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth...
I've gotten MANY very useful programs from GOTD in just a couple months. I for one am grateful for what they do, the programs that they offer, and the vendors that provide them. Everybody keeps comparing them to free programs, which is fine, but why do so many complain about what is free this day or that day?? Trashing GOTD for what free programs they give you is like a homeless guy kicking somebody in the nuts for giving him pistachio ice cream when he wanted chocolate. No, it wasn't chocolate, but it was free and he wouldn't have had the chance to have it if it wasn't offered. And like the homeless guy who can go find some chocolate ice cream, you can go digging around and find alternatives if you want, but don't get upset with GOTD if you don't like what they are giving away, just come back another day. Leave your comments, give them a thumbs up or thumbs down, review the pertinent aspects of the program, but stop bitching about GOTD.

How positively pathetic? An offer up for 18 hours + with 18 comments & a 25% user approval rating! Please, before you loose what little respect remains, close for a week & regroup.
Every quality vendor has left. 9 of 10 quality comment posters have left. Even Stephen doesn't bother posting his free games here anymore and still, nobody at GOTD has gotten it.
I do apologize but it's past due that someone steps up & speaks his /her mind. These offers are lousy, truly lousy. Every day, someone lists better free alternatives. Even the greedy no longer bother to suck up. As of today, I have zero give aways on either my Vista or XP systems. I think it's time someone here starts wondering why. If you don't like this post, to bad! This is exactly whats needed saying for weeks now.

The Good
* Easy to use and understand.
* Simple and straightforward interface.
* You can ban computers via network name or IP.
* You can see folders/locations that you are currently sharing.

The Bad
* Monitoring is kind of buggy.
* Displays a lot of "junk" information.

Free Alternatives

Verdict
As I mentioned earlier, the concept behind Active Share Monitor I found to be nice. But the fact that it does not monitor activity 100% accurately really makes me frown at this program and forces me to give it a thumbs down. As for my recommendation for today, all of the free alternatives are pretty old and I have not had a chance to test the free alternatives, but looking over them, I would say first give ShareWatch a try then try the rest if ShareWatch does not fit your needs. If all else fails, you can just fall back to Windows Computer Management.

#17, close the program, and be sure it isn't running in the background, either. Run activation, then open the program. It will register.

This is a simple, clean program with easy to understand help files. I think it's a great idea to check that there isn't some back door action going on. Any time there is a home network, there is some possibility that it could be compromised. This looks like a good safety measure.

Thanks, GAOTD!

#17 David Uncapher, Try closing the program and run Activate.exe again. It took a couple of times before it registered on my XPHome SP3.

I installed the program and then activated it. It still says that it is unregistered. Is there something I'm missing here?

On XP SP3 it does what is says it does, and quite easily... easier than learning the (free) OS intricacies of file sharing security. May I say that commenting on the usefulness of software that you're not going to use, is like a vegan talking about the spicing on my beefsteak. Can we please keep the evaluation comments to the *useability* and *functionality* and *stability* rather than the importance of it in your personal universe.

You should uninstall the 1.0 version prior to installing 1.1. It does have a few improvements. It still checks for updates, sending the registration name and key, and the version. I can't think of a reason why Vista users would need this, as you can control access to shared folders per-user, and the Computer Management, Shared Folders view gives you current status.

Agnitum released a new version of Outpost this weekend, it has a number of fixes, and the Security Suite is back to being tied for first with Online Armor (paid, not the free version) on the Matousec Firewall Challenge. Note that Agnitum's current deal isn't as good as the earlier offer; it's for the Firewall, not the Security Suite (I very strongly recommend the Security Suite).

#3: Some interesting alternatives for monitoring shares, BuBBy -- thanks -- but I don't think any of them offers to block access based on PC name.

* * *

#7: Browser, you're right if you've got it set up requiring name/password etc for access, then black-listing everyone who doesn't have a valid name/password for your shares would be redundant. Of course some feel redundant is good, but regardless I don't believe Active Share Monitor is intended when/if you share your stuff over the web -- I'd think it's more for home/family networks.

If they have access to a PC & your network, I'm sure they already know. ;?P

Does exactly what it says. Small footprint, non-technical app that can show at a glance what is being shared, what is accessing those shares and is easily set to allow / deny access to those shares.

Active Share Monitor would probably be useful for a lot of families. It can make restricting access to your PC's shared drives, folders, &/or files a lot simpler.

Most use Simple File Sharing, which is recommended under Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View -- where you turn it on/off. Many I think are probably using whatever firewall came with their AV software, but whatever your choice, including Windows built-in firewall, blocking/allowing ip addresses can be a bit cryptic -- many (most?) firewalls hide rules setting, getting it out of the way so it won't confuse casual users. I don't think most users know about setting up ip addresses on their family's computers to begin with, instead letting their network switch/gateway/router handle things automagically. With this small (124 kb) program, to deny access all you need is the PC's name, so it could hardly be easier.

On the down side you can't set access to individual shares, like you can with more complicated setups, & I think showing Windows' default, internal shares might confuse some folks... there's little explanation of anything in the help file, though in fairness Active Share Monitor is simple enough I think most anyone can easily figure out how to use it.

Another alternative:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fsmgmt.msc 2
This brings up "Shared Folders" applet.

I use this in a small LAN to verify that no other systems have any open files on the host before rebooting.

Im sure it would be useful if you had a small business, but the only one who shares files between my computers is myself. Im sure not teaching my kids how to do that lol.
Thanks though!

Seems useless.

If the aim is just to check out who's using what, Computer Management has always worked for me (Right Click on My Computer -> Manage), and the Shared Folders section gived you plenty of info.

Because I have BitMeter (very useful program for keeping track of bandwidth usage) installed, I can tell at a glance if anyone is accessing any shared files from my computer (by looking at upload part of tray icon).

Installed and ran fine on Vista and Win 7. Interface easy, good logging. Even tracks VMWare shared folders.
Solved the 'mystery of the disappearing drive space' in the first 10 minutes: Seems the wife was storing things on my laptop 'just in case' she may need them if her machine broke down.

Overall, good program. Don't need to be a techi to run it and know whats going on.

Seems kind of redundant to share files with your friends, then blacklist them.
Which is of course, exactly what you'd be doing with this since you can't use it commercially.
Safer to leave file sharing turned off anyway, which coincidentally fixes the issue also.

Now if we had a chat server or something up here instead, that'd be interesting and useful.

I've posted today's free games in the games discussion forums. There are two excellent space orientated games; the first, called Optimus Apparatus, is a gravity driven space shooter 'cum' rpg and the second game is called Privateer Gemini Gold, an Elite style game, but wih much better graphics.

I’ve also posted four older Point and Click adventures yesterday, all of which require DOSBox:

Tex Murphy 1 – Mean Streets

Tex Murphy 2 – Martian Memorandum

5 days a Stranger
Blackstar – Agent of Justice

It is easy to designate who and who can't visit your shared files. It is also easy to keep a log of who and when. All this is already built into your OS and no other program is needed.

I know many of you will think you do need this and will at least try it. another toy for toy collecters.

Actually, this one CAN be useful to the home user when the user has a home network. I have 5 machines at home with a lot of shares. Makes it nice to see what machine has files opened and when the kids are sniffing around (and visa-versa :) )
I would say go for it. And yes, I am SURE there are free utils to do this, but so is this one (today!)
Snag....

This app is "strictly personal usage". Most of the time you will now the people that access your shared drives/folders, thus no need to "control" their access.
