One of the very earliest comments stated that the program "Inspiration" is automatically added to the startup group when the program is installed.

This problem appears to have been fixed. I just finished reinstalling Inspiration for a second time and checked my startup groups to see the program had been added to any of them. Inspiration was not added to any of the startup groups.

The only way that you can find Inspiration in a startup group is if you add it your self.

Is this similar to Metaproducts Inquiry Browser?
It sounds somewhat similar. I am hoping it is as Inquiry browser does NOT like me, weird errors and such. Tho it works perfect for my friend :(

It looks interesting, but the early comments made me think about skipping it. If however we can get a free update with the problems fixed soon, I'll go ahead and give it a try . . .

Nice try but no cigar as it stands.

Installed OK on Vista Business 32bit

It's too, too BETA status for GOD release. GOD must be getting desperate for tools to release. As others have noted, while we accept that there is an element of beta testing to GOD "freebies", the stated theory is that this software is "production" "RTM" quality. If you intend to release obvious BETA code, please say so up front. If this was an announced BETA I'd consider sending the following comments in private. Since this is a GOD release, I'll post my observations on the GOD site for other GOD users.

Buttons need text! I am not a 4000 year old Egyptian who can intuitively read hieroglyphs. Please give config option to display icon/icon + text/text only. The UI appears to be a mix between "old" menu style and new "Ribbon Gooey"

Despite developers familarity with program design, we new users are not. Needs more than a 1 page screen cap "help file" to explain how to use the program.

- please mention somewhere exactly what is captured. I did a little digging and found that you capture PNG images. The capture of this GOD page is Really LOOONG and skinny. Kinda cute.

I have a dual monitor setup. It also started up for me straddling the 2 monitors, ROFLMAO. First time I've seen that. I have to assume that the program treated the screen resolution as composite and simply centered the program window.

IE only import, that sucks. But you already know that and are working on it. I use FireFox as my primary browser. That being said, I still use IE Favorites as my Web links keeper. I use a FF addon, PlainOldFavorites to tie the two together.

I did the favorites import. Imagine my pleasure when it completed 6000 links in about 10 seconds, but I didn't realize that for a couple of minutes because the green progress bar got "stuck" at around 90%. Well, the text claimed it was complete. OOPS, it only "imported" 4 links. And those imports didn't work! They didn't link to anything, and in the details view they had date of "1899-12-30", HUH (was that site created on the 2-cans-on-a-string predecessor of the internet)? if you can't figure out the date, personally I would rather see all zeros, ie "0000-00-00"

Why didn't it import more, because it doesn't know how to handle my redirected favorites folder location. I have fav's stored on a separate "data" drive in case of OS crash and re-install. IE has no problem, FireFox has no problem, this tool did.

I don't see registration info or explicit confirmation that version is registered anywhere. The trial warning in lower left corner is too "discrete". Make it much more visible. Show registration number in "About" dialog box, or at minimum display text confirming is is properly/successfully registered.

Since programmers have allowed updates for fixes, contrary to normal GOD practice, I will keep it to see what they do. I just can't imagine how many fixes a small shop could make in just 2 days. Unless they already had the next release almost ready to go before today's GOD entry. In that case, why didn't they (and GOD) wait 2 more days to release that version???

Quite possibly the worst description I've ever seen for a program on here. A hint to future developers on here - try telling us what the program actually does and use this as an example of how not to get anyone to bother with it.

I am participating today in crazy 24-hour, coffee-fueled coding and email answering marathon which is named GOTD :)

I have found that most of bugs caused after using "Import Bookmarks" and "Update Screenshots" forms. Please do not use it for now, ok?

Already fixed:
- drag and drop snapshots from and into inbox;
- portable version now installed correctly;
- added "Options form", now it is possible to choose dbl-click action, browse to website or show fullpage preview.

---
@Alec_Burgess, @August - You are right, guys.
@KB - Almost every designer have an “inspiration folder”. Me too and it is one of the reasons to create this app.
@Bigun, @Bruce, @jbarstow, @taskcrate - :D

@Bruce Google Translate стирает границы? Спасибо тебе за поддержку :)

Update will be definitely ready on Monday

As others have stated - pretty buggy and probably not in shape to release yet. I tried to edit some tags to put in the commas to separate them and it froze in a funky state - everything is blurry - had to kill the program but it came back with the changes.

Along with other things noted it needs to re-size the web page image to fit the thumbnail and display - it's currently chopping off some of the left and bottom to constrain.

I'll stick with it for a while to see if they make corrections and improvements. I can see its potential and hopes it gets there.

Having examined it some more, I can say that those bemoaning the lack of support by Inspiration Library for Firefox are whistling in the wind. Mine is pulling in Firefox pages without neither hesitation nor (so far) glitch. Will try Opera now and then maybe Iron and see what happens. So far, working like a dream.

Got to give credit where credit is due.

As a designer who keeps an "inspiration folder" on her hard drive with thumbnails of her favorite sites, I immediately saw the potential use for this software.

Reading through the comments made me a bit wary of downloading, but seeing the developers comment gave me some hope.

I've downloaded and installed it smoothly on Windows Vista Ultimate (34bit) and here's where I am now:

* I spotted an error in the English grammar (feedback report submitted)
* After trying to add a bookmark, I was greeted by a "not enough space" error message--unhelpful, unclear, and unwarranted. I have 2GB RAM on the machine with over 100GB of free space. Once I closed out the error message, the program blurred and froze.

I'll try to test it a bit more, but I must agree with Alec_Burgess: This software is clearly still beta--it would have been much easier and stung a lot less to have this knowledge going in.

ditto #26. Very frustrating if you want a program that works. Constant freezing. Drag & Drop does NOT work for me. It's a great idea for a program and useful for web designers if it worked. But it doesn't and since you don't state that it's beta I think it's just going to piss people off. I'm uninstalling it.

I second the comment by Alec_Burgess, #26 that

> a comment at the top saying something like “this is beta software –
> please test vigorously – in return we offer continuing updates”

would be a REALLY GOOD IDEA.

GAOTD FOLKS, PLEASE TAKE NOTE, for this and other software offers.

Clearly there are many people here who would be happy to do some beta testing. GAOTD testing is much the same anyway. Free upgrades, with bugs fixed, is a nice exchange.

If the software is presented for what it is, rather than pretending that it is finished, testers know what to expect and can feel success when they find a bug instead of feeling disappointment.

Then everybody wins.

I hope this helps,
August

This is an interesting little app with a nice look and feel, and good intentions. I haven't done much with it so far, but what I have done has so far worked well, and I think I will find it handy. I also like the idea of having an independent utility that is not part of a browser family, where I can do bookmark-management-website-scrapbook-type activites. (IE / Opera limitations noted - but I'm sure the author will be workign at broadening support to other browsers.)
.
Those criticising the "beta" state of the software whouldnt be too harsh on the developers: this is, after all, the modus op. of many of the established vendors, who often inflict much dodgier candidates on the phlegmatic user.
.

Free Upgrades based on user reports -- Having documented bugs for major software companies, this is a brilliant way to beta-test your product. I appreciate your honesty, your ingenuity, and your willingness to stand behind your work.

As a researcher, this concept is invaluable; as a researcher, I also know that IE is not very safe when it comes to privacy (these days, you have to know who is looking over your shoulder). Please make supporting other browsers a priority fix -- tech-savvy people will appreciate it.

I kind of thought that this was a "creative" way to get beta testers from reading comments 1 thru 20. It was confirmed by reading #21 :-)

I've no problem with concept (I like beta testing stuff). But a comment at the top saying something like "this is beta software - please test vigorously - in return we offer continuing updates" might have got more to try it (and muted the disappointment of those who do and discover the problems)

I am always appreciative to have a program developer respond to our comments. There is no better way for us to collectively be part of the development process. I only use a select few of the programs offered on GOTD but if a program has potential, the few moments that it takes me to install a program, check out the fundamentals, and make a comment is a worthwhile expenditure of time for me.

this program certainly needs more work and fixes,
but I want to mention, that it offers import from opera 7 (which I did) and MSN (have not tried)
have to say that it imported those opera bookmarks very quickly under browser speed "normal"
also to be noted: thumbnails did not appear automatically, but the top right beside help offers option- "update screenshots"
this takes you into your favourite folders you can chose from...
I personally found that it was better not to do the whole lot , but split different groups and folders, because it came up with "not enough space to complete the task", (but this may be due to my more than modest XP home + only 256 RAM)
synchro is missing, but for someone like me may take up too much memory, so have to do it manually every so often in connection with some other program
I shall keep Inspiration Library for a while and see how it develops
always thanks for the offers, one CAN take ones pick!
happy browsing everyone

Hi everybody.

First of all in all seriousness, I want to thank all of you for trying Inspiration Library, leaving comments or filling out uninstallation survey. Thank you even for cruel comments :) Most of them are reasonable.

I absolutely agree with most commenters, bugs that have founded by you are really annoing or sometimes stupid. But most of them are caused by simple oversight. I specially asked GOTD team for posting a note that free upgrades are available, because I know that Inspiration Library is not perfect and as I know this is updating feature usually closed for GOTD users. So... thanks for your comments, now we know what we need to fix, what to do next and we will redouble ours efforts to make you change your first negative impression to positive :)

We have collected impressive ammount of bugreports and update full of bugfixes will be ready in two days or sooner.

P.S.
Inspiration Library is not actually supposed to be only a bookmark manager, but many of you were disapionted by lack of browsers support and integration. We are working on it.

Portable version installation is also working unproperly...

Thanks again,
Ruslan A.

I don't use Explorer, so no interest. Besides, from the description, it sounds like the "ScrapBook" plugin I use does more and is more stable. And of course, it works with Firefox (and Flock too), so I'll just stick with it. Oh, and it's free every day. Guess I'll check back and see what gives tomorrow... hope it's something good.

The concept is very interesting, and the design attractive, but the application does need a lot of debugging, and some more features. This has already been pointed out be others, so I will not repeat it.

Some find that this program is not useful at it's present state, but it might be worth keeping still, because of this last line in it's description:

Please note that free upgrades are available for this software.

#9 frank999 and all others:

You DO need to enter the serial number!

Look in the far left bottom corner and you will see tiny little words informing you that this is a 30-day trial version - click on them and you will see the box where the serial number (found in the ReadMe) should be entered.

As a general rule (I can't remember an exception) for GOTD software:
*** If they supply you with a serial number - you need to enter it somewhere!

Tested on Windows Vista Pro 64bit 4Gb

1. Slow to download but, OK, maybe a lot of GotD people downloading

2. Installed and activated fine although never asked me for a serial number, it just activated by itself

3. I run twin monitors. When it first launched it ran centred between my two monitors. I cannot remember the last time when a program (not from GotD) did that - thumbs down

4. I tried to create a bookmark and it crashed, twice. Finally, I ran it in Administrator mode and it worked. Do you think it might be an idea to tell people this? - thumbs down

I'm sorry - I failed to carry out my intended full test because, in the end, I get really pissed off with it. It's got bugs aplenty, it's unfinished, its usability is average at best and AAAAAAARGH at worst, its documentation is one single image, that's it! It has no Help Guide to speak of, and no troubleshooting help at all. It is a piece of software that has been rushed out with little thought given to the abilities and competences of the average user.

I am a web developer, so this software is squarely designed at me. It has a USP, it is attractively designed (à la iTunes) and it has the potential to be a really useful tool for people like me, at whatever level of professionalism.

BUT THIS SOFTWARE IS IN ITS CURRENT STATE UNUSABLE

Get back behind your desk and start thinking about the User. The customer is King. This software was free for me today and I cannot wait to uninstall it. At $14.95 you are going to make enemies, people who will track you down and throw custard pies at you.

I was enthusiastic, but after 10 mintues I'm going to unistall it.
I've added 20 bookmarks, after a while 5 of them disapeared from folders ending up in INBOX folder (3 of them lost thumbnails). I can't move items from INBOX.
Apllication hang twice, reporting problem with image path on local disk (but the preview was ok), eding up with blurred window - I've to restart the app.

A different take for a screensnapper... something that is really useful especially if you're a web designer. Easy to show your collection to clients to get the ideas going... clients sometimes don't really know what they want.

But hey, for free, you can always press alt-printscreen... and save in folders... he he. So, the pricing is actually good for something like this.
