I do not understand these comments you people are leaving. It amazes me that you want a security program and then complain when it runs silently looking after any holes that those nasty hackers can get through. I have found this an excellent program and if it wants to update then I say go ahead - they know more about the workings of my computer's background than I do - Fantastic customer service and very good program that does not run at times you are in the middle of something and stops you working or playing as it is running silently in the background and has kept me safe as houses as far as I can see. I check for malware etc. every couple of weeks and there is never anything there except from Windows which I do believe is a false negative. As I have stated on their page on face book I would recommend this to all. So stop whining about a really good program and read the terms before you download and if you do not like then do not use it. Your choice, your computer and you should do right by your computer.....

For Hemidal support: Regarding my question #49 (above): It is not the updating itself, but the automatic rebooting of my machine when I am not present that is the problem. Does Hemidal do that?

I decided to download and install this software, but now I am not sure of how effective it is? I know, and Spyhunter tells me, that I have at least 2 threats on my PC. Findwide is one of them, but Heimdal cant find that, and tells me that my machine is 100% clean and safe?????

Reply   |   Comment by kjell  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Hello,

Please note that Heimdal PRO works differently than a traditional anti-malware or a traditional antivirus product: Heimdal PRO will scan your outgoing and incoming Internet traffic to detect cyber threats (infected websites, infected banners, malicious downloads, etc.) and will block these threats and website to stop them from delivering malware to your computer. This is why Heimdal is an antivirus supplement you can use to enhance your protection, especially from threats that antivirus cannot detect or block.

Heimdal does not have the ability to remove malware, so please use a dedicated solution for that.

I hope this answers your question.

I have tried to put this on both of my PC's but have gotten "license retrieval error" on both ( Vista and Win 8.1) and then a window said it was being automatically uninstalled. It's late and I have given up trying to register them. Perhaps I can catch it next time it's given away. Thanks, I tried.

First. My apologies for the late review.
When the program first initialized it told me my computer was 93% secure. It then updated Adobe AIR, which my free Avast would have done for me. Then told me my computer was 100% secure.
Good start.
Then it would not let me access one of my favourite websites (ROH) which I know is secure (because of 'possible'Phishing.)
All this program told me was that my computer is already secure.
Uninstalled with IOBit Uninstaller which cleaned up 27 registry items which would have been left behind otherwise.

Note to developers: Allow user control.

'Nuff said.

Win 7 Desktop - but since I installed this program - at least since I switched on this Hong Kong morning, I have a "Red X" on the Icon showing Internet connection.

Actually, clicking on that Icon shows not problems - and I can confirm that too, or I can't input & send off this message.

I'll see if there's any change next time I start up.

For Hemidal support: I appreciate that the program plugs holes and does no automatically, but can it ask me before applying updates as I run software that can not be interrupted. I would like Hemidal to accumulate the list of updates and ask me when it can apply them. Is there an option for this?

Reply   |   Comment by freecat  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

Hello!

Heimdal PRO will never interrupt your work or close your applications to update them while you're using them. That's why the updates are delivered not only automatically, but also silently.

Since Heimdal PRO is a security product, it will work automatically to ensure software updates are applied as soon as possible, because some updates are, indeed, critical and not applying them would mean exposing you to cyber attacks that are often vicious. Delaying that update would only mean that Heimdal PRO is not doing its job at it was intended.

Should you want to exclude a certain application from being updated, please check the answer to the question "If I don't want Heimdal to patch a certain software, what do I need to do?" from here: https://heimdalsecurity.com/en/support#heimdal-other-software

I won't be downloading this as the program update part of it is not what I would want.
Sometimes the latest version of a program is not the best version to run a lot depends on your system.
I was using Hitman Pro Free as a browser anti exploit and it worked very well for man in the browser attacks
When reinstalling my system on a new laptop I decided to try MalwareBytes Anti-exploit free
Either of the above would be a good alternative to today's offering if you didn't want automatic program updating
Also if you are running Windows 10 I would install a good Key Scrambler to stop Microsoft's Key Logger that is built into the new operating system

Reply   |   Comment by Roger  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Hi Roger,

Please consider that Malwarebytes and Hitman PRO work very differently than Heimdal PRO and only partially overlap. Also, there is the issue of free versus paid: a free security product will never be backed with the intelligence database that a paid product can provide. We invest a lot of resources into gathering our intelligence and then use this intelligence to protect our users. Also, different security companies have different sets of intelligence, and ours has been rated by Gartner as being one of the best in the industry.

That being said, it's great to use multiple security solutions to protect your PC in the context of growing and multiplying cyber threats.

Moreover, automatic updates are essential for closing security holes and leaving software un-updated is what exposes many, many users to automated cyber attacks.

I posted a question here earlier, but I don't see it, nor any answer to it, so I'll post it again. Currently, I am running Malwarebytes Pro and have never had any infections. I have been using it about three years on my laptop. That being said, no software is infallible, so I'd like to know if you think downloading Heimdal Pro will give me better security from malware used alone, or would it be a good idea to download it and use both programs. I know that anti-virus programs run simultaneously do interfere with each other, but I don't know if the same is true of anti-malware programs operate the same. What do you recommend?

Reply   |   Comment by beechiegirl1953  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

It has been answered by the Heimdal representative earlier today: no, there's no interference or conflict with Malwarebites or any other AV for that matter as Heimdal does two things: 1st, updates a long list of software everyone has on its system keeping those softwares updated and 2nd, filters incoming information through emails, websites, etc. checking attempts of malware to reach your system, thus no conflicts with existing AV. You are getting a double check on security. For further information read answers by Heimdal at # 14, 18 and 24.

This sounds only like an automatic updater?
Doesn't Windows, as well as most installed software, do that for themselves when connect?

have limited time and bandwidth for internet so currently have windows and others turned off for automatic updates.
Want to only do that when have time

What other thing does this offering provide? What else does it do for active security and malware removal?

Hello!

Thank you, Calimero, for pitching in with the info!

Indeed, Heimdal Free does only the patching part, but Heimdal PRO also employs a strong we filtering engine that is able to detect threats before they reach your system and also cyber attacks that antivirus can't block. Additionally, Heimdal PRO will offer protection against data exfiltration, Zero Day malware, software exploits and more. You can find all the details on the dedicated page: https://heimdalsecurity.com/en/products/heimdal-pro

I have been using this program for a while now and I find it a very good and useful program that runs silently in the background - Unlike others that stop you working or slows down the machine or stop start etc. - I give this program 5* and have said so on face book as I have not had a major problem and I just love the happy smiley it gives you when your computer is at 100%. Thanks again for a great program. Using win 7 Pro 64.

Using Windows 10 and the notifications keep chiming every few minutes that Adobe Flash has not been updated, then needs to be, then has, then not, then need, etc, and there is no way to turn off the notifications, so over whatever you are watching there is this chime and notice.
And I have updated Flash, it is wrong.
Very aggravating and wrong.
I wanted this to be good...

Is this to do with the incompatibility with Windows 10?

I spotted some flaws.

I am using a beta version of VLC and Heimdal automatically overwrote it with the old version, so there needs to be an option to exclude specific software from the automatic updates.

Some updates which after it had gone through the update procedure were being shown as having failed but when I hit the scan button they then updated being shown as installed but then only a couple of minutes later, an update for Flash that had just been installed was then shown to be out of date again.

Reply   |   Comment by PhilS  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

Hello Phil,

Heimdal PRO will automatically update your software to the latest stable version, so beta is not included in that list. Should you want to keep Heimdal from updating certain software, please find the answer to the question "If I don't want Heimdal to patch a certain software, what do I need to do?" here: https://heimdalsecurity.com/en/support#heimdal-other-software

Sorry about the issue with Adobe Flash. I will check with my colleagues today and make sure to solve the issue as promptly as possible.

@Andre: I think I discovered an Issue.

Your security software "automatically updates vulnerable programs", such as Java and Flash. So, for instance, I imagine Silverlight would be updated too. If so, that presents a problem for XP, which your company says is compatible with Heimdal.

Sir, XP is no longer supported by MSFT (and many software developers). The current version of Silverlight is 'officially' incompatible with XP. So, what does your software do in an instance such as XP and Silverlight? Will your software attempt to update using an incompatible new version?

Reply   |   Comment by Preston Mitchell  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

From previous comment of Andra: "This is the vulnerable software applications list that Heimdal PRO will monitor and patch for you: 1. Java (32bit) 2. Java (64bit) 3. Adobe Shockwave 4. Adobe Flash (plug-in/player) 5. Adobe Acrobat reader 6. Quicktime 7. Winzip 8. Skype 9. Windows Media Player
10. Microsoft MDAC 11. Chrome 12. Firefox 13. Internet Explorer 14. Opera Browser"

Reply   |   Comment by Calimero  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

@ Caliimero: Yes, thank you for that list of programs targeted for updating. OK. Silverlight is a bad example. But Java is becoming less compatible with XP too. So, the original question remains: Will Hiemdal attempt to update a program to an incompatible version?

Reply   |   Comment by Preston Mitchell  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Win Xp is supported by Java runtime for now, but what seems logical is that when Java is not supported any longer on Winxp, you end up with the newest version of Java for XP (a newer version would just not be available for XP). It would be very strange if Heimdal would try to install a version that is not for the OS it runs on. B.t.w. However, there is an exception by updating java 6 and 7: "Why does Heimdal not patch Java 7 to the last version of Java 8? At Heimdal, we have decided not to patch Java 7 to Java 8 or Java 6 to Java 7, because some of our clients prefer to use an older version of Java which is kept up to date by Heimdal." "https://heimdalsecurity.com/en/support#heimdal-other-software"

Question for Developer Andra from Heimdal Security:

My dual OS PC (XP & W7)currently runs the following security software: Emsisoft Anti-Malware, Malwarebytes, and Hitman Pro (all paid versions with ACTIVE protection).

The software installed easily and doesn't seem to have noticeably slowed my system. However, I keep getting a message that it has found a patch to install and then that it has installed it but when I check the details it shows as having failed to install it. The patch is for Adobe Flash plugin. So far Heimdal has tried & failed to install the patch about six times.

I have been using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro for several years and have never had an infection. In what way would I improve my PC protection by using Heimdal Pro? Can the two programs be run simultaneously?

Reply   |   Comment by beechiegirl1953  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

Hello!

Heimdal PRO is 100% compatible with Malwarebytes and the two products are complementary. Heimdal PRO will act proactively to protect your system, scanning for web threats and blocking them before they reach your system. It will also block the communication between the infection and the malicious servers controlled by cyber criminals and it will also keep your software up to date to close security holes that attackers could exploit. Malwarebytes only overlaps with Heimdal PRO partially, in detecting malware, but the two products work together seamlessly and can offer you better protection (multi-layer protection is ideal for anyone using the Internet!).

I hope this helped answer your question.

Heimdal works by employing 2 core engines that offer complex, proactive protection against second generation malware, exploits, malicious websites, infected banners, ransomware and more. Well, it seemed to install and register fine or so I thought but when I got back up, I couldn't couldn't connect to a server, with both Chrome and Firefox. I don't have IE so I don't know about it. The system it failed on was running Vista. I was hoping that it was the Fiber guy's problem but when I went into the other room and I tried my Win7 Sys, it still worked fine...Anyway I lost 2 hours of work along with this one...So be it. You mentioned software gets updated automatically..would this be a good idea for those still with XP? I found out even if the machine isn't XP, the slower machines that can't be updated with hardware can't handle the updates..take for instance...windows media...if u update the player, it will be too big for the slower machine and therefore you have a machine "crawl along".

Please clarify this question and is there an option to disable automatic updates...

Thank You,

Hi Kelly,

Please consider that Heimdal PRO doesn't update all the software you have installed. It delivers updates just to those applications which are security critical.

This is the vulnerable software applications list we'll monitor and patch for you:
1. Java (32bit) 2. Java (64bit) 3. Adobe Shockwave 4. Adobe Flash (plug-in/player)
5. Adobe Acrobat reader 6. Quicktime 7. Winzip 8. Skype 9. Windows Media Player
10. Microsoft MDAC 11. Chrome 12. Firefox 13. Internet Explorer 14. Opera Browser

More software will be added along the way.

It should not slow your system down, since Heimdal PRO is very light on the system.

I bought Heimdal Pro 1.10 product as part of a special offer elsewhere. in July. It has worked really well for me, and I am very satisfied with it. My malware protection is Bit Defender Total Security, and it works well with it.

Is there a way to undo the changes made by this program if the changes cause problems for my computer?

Reply   |   Comment by gpc111  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

Hi!

Heimdal will not change anything fundamental in how your computer works, it will only improve your protection by installing software updates, filtering your web traffic and identifying and blocking advanced malware.

Should you uninstall Heimdal, the only changes left would be that your software will be updated to the latest version. If you want to change that, you'll have to manually install an older version of that software, which we do not recommend, because that will expose you to security risks, making it easy for cyber criminals to launch automated attack against your PC and infect it by exploiting security holes in old software which are already public.

Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know and I'll be happy to provide the answers.

Reply   |   Comment by Andra from Heimdal Security  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

I'm sorry but I did not ask my question clearly enough. I am not talking about anything fundamental in how your computer works. I am talking about any changes made that may harm a program or process I currently use. Can I undo changes made? If not, this may be something you need to add to the next update. An undo function is a very necessary function.

Can anyone confirm that Heimdal Pro is compatible with Bitdefender? Bitdefender generally does not coexist well with other security software.

Heimdal PRO is not 100% compatible with Windows 10 yet. We're working on making that happen in the very near future.

Until then, we'd like to assist you and see if we can make it work on your system, so please send an email to our support team at support@heimdalsecurity.com to check the specifics and see how you can enjoy your Heimdal PRO license.

I use SpyHunter4 in my never-ending battle with browser-based malware. How does Heimdal Pro relate to this software in avoiding conflicting functionality?

And after the 6-month free license, the cost is $80 per year, per machine? Is that correct?

Reply   |   Comment by warpwiz  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Hi there!

From what I've read about SpyHunter4, it acts very differently than Heimdal PRO, in the sense that it will scan the local system to find malware and recommend tools for removing it. Heimdal PRO should work with it without a hitch, as it does, for example, with Malwarebytes or any antivirus product.

Heimdal PRO will filter your Internet traffic, blocking malicious web destinations, such as infected websites, phishing websites, infected banners on legitimate websites, etc., which are all infection vectors. The only overlap would be in the malware detection process, but there shouldn't be any problem there.

Additionally, Heimdal PRO will automatically and silently install software updates, closing vulnerabilities and ensuring that there are no security holes that cyber criminals can exploit.

I hope you find this information useful and let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know about Heimdal.

Reply   |   Comment by Andra from Heimdal Security  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

PS: Sorry I forgot to answer your last question. After the 6 months, the cost is $44/year/license. A license can be used for a single PC. Should you want to protect more PCs, you can choose Heimdal PRO Family Edition that will protect up to 4 PCs ($70).

Heimdal makes changes to my other software installed in my computer without first asking for my permission? And after making the changes that cannot be undone, Heimdal does not notify me that it has made the [permanent] changes to my other software?
So that all the times, I the owner of the computer have no say at all and have no idea what was done to all the other installed software?
This is not my idea of a good software.
Please note ALL of the EULA of all other software expressly forbids you to make changes to their software code without their software developers' permission.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback, but please note that automatically and silently installing software updates is a big security advantage to home users. This type of service is enterprise-level, used in companies worldwide that want to make sure their software is up to date and that vulnerabilities are patched so that cyber criminals cannot exploit them.

Should you want tho benefit from this type of protection, you can choose to install Heimdal.

For context, please note that cyber security experts single out not installing the latest software updates as one of the main causes for cyber attacks: https://heimdalsecurity.com/blog/most-common-mistakes-27-cyber-security-experts/

Automatic software patching is not singular on the market and our service agreement contains all the information about the product that you can agree or disagree with before choosing to install Heimdal PRO.

Reply   |   Comment by Andra from Heimdal Security  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+12)

I may be wrong but reading RIC's posting and the response from Heimdal, it sounds like RIC is referring to modifications to the installed software whereas Heimdal is referring only to installing the latest updates from the software publishers. If Heimdal were making modifications to the software outside of the publisher's updates, I too would not want to install Heimdal Pro but I don't think that is the case. I believe they are doing nothing more than insuring that the software is kept up to date as updated by the software publishers.

Reply   |   Comment by arbala  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+12)

Indeed, this is the case. Heimdal PRO will not make any changes to your software or other settings, except for installing updates that are very necessary and ensuring that security patches are applied as soon as they're available.

Installed this on an older Dell XP laptop, which I often use to test GOTD offers... Received activation code, applied, code was accepted, and ran. Immediately the program begins to install what it deems required, or essential updates. (IE, Acrobat, Air, Java Runtime)

Following that process, I selected the malware tab. Popup appears telling me that this option is only available to Pro users, and to consider upgrading.

Several more attempts since, have resulted in long pauses, eventually leading to - 'connection to service failed'- reports, 'this might be due to a misconfigured computer'..

I have twice chosen to send error reports, but do not expect anything meaningful as a result.

Disappointed, and cannot recommend for these reasons.

Thank you, Bill!

We always learn a lot from talking to our customers or people interested in Heimdal. Since it's a cyber security product, we also find that there are certain barriers to adoption, because it's a field that's not always easy to understand without acquiring a certain amount of knowledge. So that's where we try to come in and help users make the most of Heimdal.

I hope you'll give Heimdal PRO a chance as well!

Again, as others have said Great for representives from company being here responding. I think that too often on GAOTD, the title gets voted down just because don't understand about it or what could be best used for. Just the description, wasn't going to download. Reading the back and forth, now think might work well with existing anti virus.

Also, thank you for that bold line above saying will be offering support and updates to us trying for free today.

Reply   |   Comment by Ian - Edinburgh  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+14)

Hi Ian!

For the moment, Heimdal PRO works in Windows 10, but is not fully compatible with OS, so this is why Edge is not yet included on the list of applications that we automatically and silently patch. However, we are working on this and in full compatibility between Heimdal and Windows 10 will be available in the near future. Thank you for this question!

A 6 months license; in contrast some giveaways on cover disks have a full year subscription. So many Antivirus tools out there, but really, everyone says the same on their product page and as soon as you read some reviews your jaw drops on the floor because the testing results vary so much that you don't know in the end if you should buy it or not. To be honest, I tried eset smart security as alternative a while ago and now I'm back and staying with Windows Defender as it will remain free (that's the only point keeping it, if it is secure, I can't say because I'm not expert enough in the field of cyber attacks).

I think I will stay away from testing another AV Tool, that's not to say today's giveaway is bad but I'm just too cozy with my current security setup.

Reply   |   Comment by xenox  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Of course there are free versions of many security software, not to mention various titles that work in a complementary way to traditional AV. You may want to look into the free ones at least, Windows Defender is not the only one available.

Reply   |   Comment by Mark  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+16)

Hello!

I really appreciate the feedback, but Heimdal PRO is not an antivirus product and doesn't claim to be. Heimdal PRO is an antivirus supplement, which works proactively. While antivirus will scan your system locally to identify infections on your PC, Heimdal PRO will scan your Internet traffic to detect and block threats before they reach your system. There's an important difference in how antivirus works and how Heimdal PRO works, which makes them both different, but very compatible when it comes to ensuring enhanced protection.

Hi Henry,

Heimdal PRO does improve security for systems running XP, applying security patches, guarding the system against advanced malware and blocking cyber threats before they reach your system. However, since XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, we do recommend you upgrade to a newer OS as you as you have the possibility to do so.

Reply   |   Comment by Andra from Heimdal Security  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+23)

Check eBay for Windows 7 licenses Henry, people sell the back or cover off of laptops for as little as $30. XP is just not supported anymore.

Reply   |   Comment by Mark  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+24)

Hi henry,

I also run XP through Firefox and has ZoneAlarm, Antimalwarebytes and NoScript! Since they closed down the upgrades, I have had absolutely no problems, that the security could not fix or catch. So as long as my present pc (now 9 years old) is in funktion, I will stick to XP, thats for sure!
