Basically, no security, no compression on the lite version.

Now, a note to publishers, especially those with higher end, corporate versions, or multiple seat discounts. There are a lot of people on here that evaluate your product AND your company based on how you respond to issues and questions. I for one started looking at this based on a large clients need, and if that worked, would have deployed to two smaller companies. I work for a international company doing support, and local companies.

Will I buy a corporate license to the product? No. But I can tell you I will think twice about recommending a product where the company may be buying 500+ seats and facing a company that isn't forthcoming with a simple request and has cross-issues with doPDF and novaPDF as one person had above. If there is common code, make it one product.

i used novapdf (probably previous gotd version) without problems. i uninstalled it just for having too much pdf printers and other one served my (a bit specific) needs better. but i shall give a try to this version - old one had some marginal problems with margins, this one can be better...

Thanks to the GOTD Team and Softland for today's giveaway, but if it's okay, i think i will stick with my older v7 Standard, and i do believe that the Lite version offers a few less features.

novaPDF v7 has, and continues to serve my needs well, and is fast and very reliable.

Interesting how v7.7.400 novaPDF Standard was only 6.0 MB, and here is v8.3.933 weighing in at 42.7 MB. I just figured that the .NET framework was now included in the installer at that size.

As a free alternative, I have used PDFCreator (http://www.pdfforge.org/) successfully. They also have an add-in module (US$ $9.99) that I have not used.

I have been using FinePrint and pdfFactoryPro (by the same company) for over 20 years and have been VERY Happy with them. They are NOT FREE, but they offer a very generous upgrade policy and development is ongoing.
The functions of pdfFactoryPro compares well with NovaPDF Professional.

The necessity to have a standalone product to generate PDF files is pretty marginal nowadays, given that so many applications already offer the ability to save their output in PDF format natively.

As I haven't tried the other PDF utilities mentioned so far in the comments, all I can add is that my favourite products for handling PDF-related functions are those from Foxit Software (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/) and Aiseesoft (http://www.aiseesoft.com/). The Foxit products are comprehensive, well-designed and implemented, and easy to use.

Aiseesoft's PDF-to-Word converter plus OCR tool offers outstanding performance (better than Adobe's subscription-based online conversion tool). Its unique features are the extremely comprehensive list of supported languages (many more than Adobe's), and its superb accuracy. I can't praise it enough.

I use print to PDF quite often, usually to save web page content, & to *save* a receipt when I purchase something on-line -- a precaution in case it never shows up via e-mail, & for those times the e-mail order acknowledgement or confirmation does not have full details, which is very common. I cannot recommend the software I've used for many, many years, PDF Creator, because it'll often stop working -- it only takes seconds to fix, & is likely caused by interactions with other software I've got, but I can't recommend something with problems.

If you use the following as the search term with Google, you will see the times that NovaPDF has been on GOTD -- "novapdf" site:giveawayoftheday.com . The results include other versions, so perhaps if you wanted a better version [i.e. Pro], you'll be able to upgrade with a future GOTD.

Odds are that we will see more PDF printers on GOTD I think -- with the free win7/8/8.1 upgrade to Windows 10, which includes its own built-in PDF printer, I'd imagine sales for this sort of software will decline, so companies will want to get what they can, while they can in terms of sales.

I've had an earlier version of NovaPDF installed in my XP Mode VM for quite some time -- I've only used it once or twice but it's seemed OK. That does mean however that I cannot give a good accounting of what installation adds or needs, because much of that is already installed.

I will say that if this version of NovaPDF does require .NET 3.5 or 4 [as one of the comments suspects], neither are a insurmountable problem in XP. Up until the end of last year when I upgraded parts of this PC, & could no longer run XP, XP Pro SP3 did just fine with all the available .NET versions installed. Installing the later versions might not have been fun -- it took quite some time -- but it all worked OK in the end.

I already have this installed. Should I uninstall the old one first or will this one just update it automatically ?

1. Might not work on XP for those who despise the .NET framework 4.0. (A hunch because there is no indication of which framework version is required. But the screenshot gives a hint.)

2. For any expensive and very heavy (100 MB!) product to replace a much lighter free one, it must have outstanding features not found anywhere else. This is not the case with this GOTD. If you remove the crap with a semantic analysis filter from the NovaPDF Lite's web page, you'll be left with 3 words: requirements, linearization, profiles. If that's what you want...

3. It cannot produce PDF forms. I can tell it because if it did, it would be mentioned in bold in the feature list. In comparison, Open/LibreOffice can export a text document to a PDF form. I make all my forms with OOo (don't forget to name correctly every field for FDF support). If you look at the PDF export options in OOo, you will notice how poor and limited is this NovaPDF Lite.

Besides the $29.99 lost and other shortcomings mentioned, there's one more negative:

novaPDF requires the .NET framework to work so you'll be prompted during setup to install if it's not already on your PC.

Don't forget this is implemented as a printer driver, if more developers decide to use .net or java for this kind of software, you'll be forced to upgrade your hardware sooner than later given the unnecessary bloat this brings about on every boot of your PC.

There seems to be no security settings (passwords) with this version of novapdf that I could find... Maybe it has security, but I do not know how to add a password to the printed documents! -uninstalling-

1.) It says in the description to set it as default printer. Total insanity. That means any time you press "print" your documents will be copied to PDF instead of going to the normal printer. i.e. instead of printing on paper unless you choose to make a PDF it will make a PDF unless you choose to print on paper. In fact when you install a PDF print driver you usually have to reset the default back to your standard printer because they grab the default setting on installation.
2.) As implied above, the world is full of free PDF converters that work this way. My favourite is Bullzip, but there are so many to choose from.
3.) Many, if not all, modern office suites will save to PDF natively, anyway, including the open source ones. e.g. the obvious one; Libre Office

This does the same job as all the other freeware PDF virtual printers, the only difference is this costs $29.99. The key feature of being able to recognise and make active links (both visible (http:// or whatever is visible on screen) and cloaked (some text has a link attached to it) is missing from this 'lite' version. Add in the 44Mb download...sorry guys, no dice. Had this been the Standard or Pro edition, maybe, to see if it can handle links.

Installed and registered without problems on a Win 8.1.3 Pro 64 bit system. A larger installation due to (printer) drivers. It is the original installer from SoftLand.

A Romanian company with address. The software is on the market since many years, a novaPDF Printer Lite was GOTD on December 14, 2006.
Meanwhile there are many PDF print drivers on the market, free and paid. They all do more or less the same: print with the "print command" from any application something in the PDF format.

If you install it - think, that it does not make much sense to have several PDF printers installed. Keep the one, you like most.

Today's software is a rather complete printing system, you can change the behavior with the profile manager:

I have doPDF8 installed a my PDF print driver. For this test I installed additionally today's software. Guess, what it does? You can't guess.
