Keyboard US International, Code Page 1250, is all you need in order to type in almost any Roman-alphabet language under the sun; you just have to learn the keyboard shortcuts for all the different accents and diacriticals. There's not that many of them.

I can see a program like this being useful for other writing systems, but not if it crashes all the time.

Most of the people in the world do not use a Roman alphabet for their native language....:-)....

I have used this app for quite a while and it never crashed....:-)....

@ Alex (reply 2 to question 3), thank you. Now I understand what this is for. The description at the beginning of the page really didn't explain it for me. Being mono-lingual, I don't have a use for this. :)

Although I didn't have as many issues as Karl, there is certainly some kind of fault in the software regarding what it is mainly meant to do - the cursor never changes colour. I did go to settings and fiddle about, certainly managed to get the flags to work, but would have preferred what first attracted me and I first read about this software, the different-coloured cursor according to keyboard layout.

If you don't know in which language you're writing, you have a serious issue that no software, I'm afraid, can solve.

Some people are confusing keyboard layout and language. If your keyboard has at least 26 letters from A to Z, you always can write English with, say, your italiano keyboard layout.

@ Janet

You have to start typing for this GOTD to tell you what is the current keyboard. It cannot tell beforehand.

I'm failing to see why the language bar on the Windows taskbar is not enough.

I obviously know what language I am typing. I don't know which keyboard my computer will be using at a given blank point on the page.

2. "You have to start typing for this GOTD to tell you what is the current keyboard. It cannot tell beforehand."
This is simply false and consequently you missed the point of the app. When you place your cursor, it has a little flag of the country of the language/keyboard which WILL BE USED once you start typing. It does this BEFORE YOU TYPE ANYTHING. You can set the cursor to show the flag or to show a text abbreviation of the language.

Perhaps you are a young person--nowadays young people don't seem to know how to read....:-)....

I love collecting GOTD software items that could be of future use to me. I looked at this one and could not begin to appreciate what I would use it for. Several of the long comments were very informative, thank you, I will not need this program though the short cut key strokes for repetitive phrases would be interesting to try I have not had luck with another similar helper program.

As an aside for the developer, initially I thought it was for language translation. That is you type in English and see simultaneously in another panel a French version being presented. That would be interesting but quite a different program.

I envy people that manage more than one language. I am an engineer and flunked Latin in my freshman year of high school. Never looked back. Thanks again for the comments. GJW

Just too much trouble to register. I clicked the registration zip file, but it would not work because of permission settings in my system. I am not going to the trouble of changing my settings for the sake of meeting an obscure registration procedure. However, as advised, I opened the xml registration file and copied and pasted the username and key into the relevant boxes but found I was unable to click the 'ok' button. If it is designed to be this much of a hassle to register, I reasoned that it must be even worse to use. Uninstalling and not bothering with the trial period. Shame, quite fancied seeing the potential of the program, but that feeling dried up quickly with the registration hassle.

Marty,

English, Spanish, French, and Italian all use the same letters and are read from left to right. Hebrew and Arabic have completely different letters from English, completely different keyboards, and are read from right to left. If you are writing a document in one language, you will not need this program. But if you regularly write documents using two different languages with two different keyboards within the same document/paragraph/line, this app will be very helpful. Especially when one language is read right-to-left ant the other is read left-to-right.

My OS and interface are in English, but I regularly make and receive docs, emails, forms, etc. in Hebrew, or mixed Hebrew and English. My WORD and my "Windows Live Mail" are sometimes left at Hebrew settings and sometimes left at English settings. My docs and emails often contain both Hebrew and English in them. When I go to annotate a document, answer an email, fill out a form, etc., I place my cursor in a blank space or on a blank line. There is no way to know looking at the screen which language it will type (Hebrew or English) until I start typing. With this app, I can know before I start typing.

In short, it is good for people who regularly go back and forth between languages with different keyboards, particulary if they regularly mix both languages in a single document.

HTH,
Janet

Janet,

Thank you for the explanation.

I now better understand the need for such an app. I do often mix languages in my writing, especially in English where I'll often insert a Spanish word or phrase. Jokingly, my mixed language writing is referred to as "Spang-glish". But, as you point out both languages are read and written in the same direction using the same letters: the only difference is the use of accent marks and punctuation.

Again, thanks for the explanation.

Phrase Express can be configured to type anything that is on the keyboard (in affect in any language) by using a keystroke (normally ";") and whatever you assign to the keystroke for punctuation etc. For instant as soon as I type ;hh the word Honda appears.

My only foreign language is English but it just seems that after someone would type a few words that they ought to be able to remember what language they are typing in. Finding where the different characters are on a foreign keyboard could be a problem with multiple languages. Try Phrase Express in that case.

Standard disclaimer applies, I don't work for or have any financial interest in PE.

This must be for those Vinni Barbarino moments in our lives when we shake our heads and ask, "What?, Who?, When?" Grab our head with both hands and say "I'm so confused."

I'm multilingual, many times a week I write reports or stories in all four languages and I must admit I have never, (let me repeat that) I have never been confused about in which language I'm writing. And, I have been writing for over 65 years. When I write I think in that language in order to get the syntax correct.

The only individuals that I can think of that "might" not know what language is being used is someone that is only entering letters onto a page or computer. And, to be honest, why would they have a need for that information. Their not expected to correct spelling or words in the document. They don't need to think about what they are writing: they only need to input it.

Before I continue this comment let me say that the four languages I write and speak are English, Spanish, French, and Italian. As you know these are Western European languages. I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH ANY OTHER LANGUAGE SPOKEN OR WRITTEN IN THE WORLD.

My Grandson has pointed out that there might be subtle difference in characters or syntax used in languages common to each other such as those of Eastern Europe, Semitic languages, North African, Oriental, or any other language spoken all over the world. In cases such as these (let's say for example that their are subtle differences in the characters used in Japan vs Korea) I guess that there would be a need for such a tool as the one being offered.

I don't have a need for this tool so I'm not even going to download it to try. It'll just clutter my lap top.

For those that do, Thank you GOTD.

Marty

PS - I certainly hope that I have not insulted anyone with my comment but if, by chance, I have please let me know so that I can learn, grow, and not repeat the same mistake again.

This is not about language, it is about keyboard. Keyboard don't know linguistics.

Marty, it seems you and several others haven't understood the difference between the language you type in and the keyboard layout you use - of course you know what language you are typing in if you speak the language, but you don't necessarily know, until you use one of the keys that are different between two layouts, which keyboard layout you are using. And the Windows indication at bottom of the screen is not always clear, particularly if two languages you use begin with the same letter, such as EN and ES, and the second character is hardly visible, as on my own (older) laptop.

This program is extremely useful for millions of people--anyone whose native language has a different keyboard layout from English. I often write in English with Hebrew words or phrases inserted, or vise versa. Especially if you are going back to edit, it is difficult to know whether the language change occurs at the first letter of the foreign word, a space before it, or a space after it. This is particularly difficult with Hebrew and Arabic because of the reverse direction----you often have to place the cursor in a very unintuitive position in order for it to come out right. Sometimes an entry doesn't come out right because it turns out that empty spaces or lines are in the second language (there is no way to see this). There are a lot of little things like this that come up regularly for people who type in two languages that use different keyboards. This program is a tremendous help!

Nowadays when millions non-native English speakers often have to write in English, I can see this as a very helpful program. Those of you who don't need it should not knock it....:-)....

Janet and Mazov,

That's interesting. Could you or rather would you please write an example of what you are writing? It might be easier to understand what you have written if we could see an example. That would add tremendously to our understanding of other cultures and languages.

I believe if we understand each other better there will be less conflict. Oh, and if we had WISER LEADERS that would help too.

Thanks,

Marty

My native language is French, but as a programmer, I have always preferred to use a QWERTY (US) keyboard. Unfortunately, on QWERTY keyboards, there is no way to type accented characters, frequent in French. Therefore, when I have to type something in French, I need to use a different keyboard layout: QWERTY International. Basically, it's still a QWERTY keyboard, but some keys are redefined to allow typing accents. For example, to type "é", I need to press the apostrophe key, followed by "e". To type the apostrophe normally, I need to press it followed by the space bar. The coma and tilde keys are modified the same way. Using two keyboards layout alternatively is very difficult, and a clear reminder of the layout you are currently using is certainly a good thing. For that reason, I thing that the idea of Aml Maple is good. The way it has been implemented is another thing, and according to the review #2, it is not very good. I'll try it anyway...

You should try the Swiss keyboard, it is a QWERTZ, close to US keyboard, but with all accents you may need; I used first the Belgian-French keyboard, then the US one before discovering the Swiss; btw, the Swiss-French and the Swiss-German keyboards are the same, just some accented characters are inverted, accessible as shifted or not shifted keys. Good luck.

The Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator might help you, like it solved my problem writing accented letters in Spanish, French and German, as well as special characters such as the ß (AltGr+s), æ (AltGr+a), œ (AltGr+o). Works well with laptop keyboards or with keyboards without numeric pad. I added some symbols (mostly greek letters) I frequently use, such as Σ (AltGr+RightCtrl+s), Ω (AltGr+RightCtrl+o), etc.

Most people do not type in several languages in the same one document on a frequent basis. You have be proficient in more than 1 language before you can write (not just speak) in those languages.
You need to make command changes in your computer before you key in the new language. So it is a conscious decision that requires several active steps.
In other words, you would know it.

UnQuote

It is a tool that is not needed. Humans are not so dumb that they have to be reminded that they are writing in Japanese instead of English. Is it not obvious?

The market for this software is very small and maybe confined to highly proficient translators of foreign languages - and even then only if the languages they are keying in have roughly similar western alphabetic script. Say, English and German.

If the languages are say for example, original Pali script (for Buddhist scriptures) and English. Then why would you need a visual reminder on the computer screen?

In order to import the registration zip file, I had to change security permissions, and this is something that any normal pc user would not be comfortable using or doing. The idea of this software is very good, but the execution of the install and registration leaves very much to be desired. Would give this 4 stars for usefulness but minus 4 stars for ease of registration. Have now installed on windows 8.1 and is working ok, although have had one app closure due to error. Will refer back later if any other problems occur.

If you use more than 1 keyboard/language layout when you are switching between them the small language indicator in the corner of your screen is not very helpful. Having own colour or cursor shape for each keyboard layout could be handy.

I would guess it would be useful if you were working in a particular language, like Spanish, that's used all over the world but has different dialects, different phrases and so on. That way you could know if you were in "Catalan Spanish" or "Mexican Spanish" or some such. I sort of doubt the program has that level of distinction, though.

Perhaps if you accidentally setup your PC to "British English" and can't log in because you don't have the same symbols as "American English," this can help you switch to the proper language?

How to it works

Aml Maple is a helpful indicator for the currently used keyboard layout. The indication is configurable and might be done in two ways: either by text cursor or mouse pointer or both of them. The indication in the text cursor is done by changing its color and indicating the language name to or below the cursor. The cursor width is also configurable. The indication in the mouse pointer is done by showing either the language name or country flag next to the mouse pointer.

Actually, it could be ever so useful (if it worked! have yet to try it) for people who write in more than one language and, in order to be able to use the right accents, have more than one language keyboard set up. The language indicator at the bottom of one's screen is not that obvious and can be obscured, and the selected keyboard often switches when moving to a different programme. It is particularly annoying when you need to type in passwords and you can't see what you've typed (for those not familiar with keyboards in different languages, some of the symbols and letters assigned to the keys are different according to language, so an @ in the English keyboard is where it says on the physical keyboard if you bought your computer in an English-speaking country, but if you've switched to Spanish it would be assigned to one of two other keys, depending on the variant of Spanish...) A different coloured cursor, after getting used to it, would be more efficient.

Installed and registered without problems on a Win 8.1.3 Pro 64 bit system.

A (Russian) company without name and address, but an ICQ. I used this when? 15 years ago? more?

We had a previous version Aml Maple 3.65 on June 2, 2014. Here are the old reviews:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/amlmaple/

Upon start a terrible (in my case German) interface opens. errors due to wrong unicode, a mix between German and English. Terrible for a German user.

It messes up the different language settings:

And finally it crashes after entering the zipped keyfile...

The software plays a little bit too much with the system settings.

The idea may be useful for somebody switching between Cyrillic and western input methods. But the programmed result is at least...

How is Karl supposed to "try for a few day" if the thing crashes and basically refuses to work. Karl gives a quick assessment and an opinion. If he takes a few days to test the program, there will be no place for him to post his test results on this site. A quick assessment and opinion is about all anyone could do here. He is one of a few that actually puts time into checking the software before posting remarks, the rest of us just post conclusions based on irrelevant factors, such as the country where the software company is based, or the quality of their English writing skills, or---hardly ever the actually the function of the software. Besides, I'm sure Karl has other things to do with his life, like earning a living.
