Installed and uninstalled. Does not have Avant browser support, or many others for that matter.
Thanks Ashraf for your suggestions. I just synced my bookmarks with linkman lite and it worked. I synced firefox 3 bookmarks with avant.

I have a problem with some unicode characters in name of links, also with Internet Explorer bookmarks. LinkCollector fail to read my Favorites folder because of some unicode characters in file names of bookmarks.

The description looks nice, but it has a big shortcoming, as I expected.
It allows only one "Opera" browser (at least, it is possible to choose which one to use (unlike some other "Opera-aware" sofware (I didn't try to set other browser's options to other Operas, though))).
(Not rated it.)

AM DeadLink which is freeware will do the same test on all of your links. Couple that with Foxmarks (soon to be known as XMarks with versions coming for IE and Safari) and you have what LinkCollector does without any worry:

For Firefox I've used bookmark duplicate detector (though not since upgrading to 3.07). It bogs down a bit on my older machine on the thousands of bookmarks, and you need to manually import older html exports of bookmarks via the import function under manage bookmarks... then when done cleaning up, moving folders etc. I would export to html.

Installed Linkcollector to XP Pro SP3+ athlon 1.4, but as noted by some others it did NOT import existing bookmarks from FF; I was able to manually import an older html export ok, sorry didn't see how to check for dups. The verify option just started opening each link in turn, not clear what IP stack etc. was used and I don't want someone's custom stack running on my machine. I tried the export function - the HTML export was EMPTY, the lib_30 export did put out stuff but useless for me since I want to re-merge back onto FF, also didn't see a way to re-organize bookmarks and folders.

So for me FF bookmarks manager and the add-on bookmark duplicate detector seem preferable.

A real bummer. Lost all of my Bookmarks in Firefox 2.0.0.17. Tried to export them with the HTML option and save. Found the HTML bookmarks
under Documents & Settings but was never able to restore them to Firefox. Am running XP with IE, Avant, Firefox. Just made a big mess of
all my Favorites and bookmarks. Tried the new 3.0.8 ver of Firefox to input, didn't work. I now have to go to my backup of my bookmarks and find another program to re-install.Very poor program with no help.

I loved the idea of weeding through my bookmarks and auto removing any broken links. Luckily, I double checked the programs accuracy in doing this task, because it marked an awful lot of good links as broken.

I used to use BookmarkBridge (and Scheduled Task) to synchronize bookmarks between my browsers. At the same time, I use Foxmarks to synchronize the synchronized bookmarks with other PCs (that also have bookmarkbridge). But that doesn't work with Firefox 3.
I was hoping that this would be good but without unicode support, then this can be considered a joke. What developerw of a web-related product not think that unicode is important? Is the Internet made up of only one language? Considering that the developers are not from English-speaking country themselves, then they must be really dense...

Don't know about this program or class of software. Use various public library computers so can't save links anyway. When find a good site, just copy the page address into a word doc that have on my flash drive. Then can easily search for the one, copy and paste into address bar.

Hi Folks,

Thank you Mike G #60 - LinkStash is an apples and apples comparison.
There are a bunch of programs like LinkStash.

http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?topic=7926.0
Multi-browser Bookmark Synchronization Tool and Other Multi-Browser Ideas?

miTaggedMarks - Powermarks - Link Commander - Linkman - Bookmark Base - Power Favorites - LinkStash

And apparently Link Collector, at this point, is not quite ready for prime time compared to these.

================================

Most of the compares above were a home system multi-browser program as above, compared to something different :

Internet (del.icio.us, Backflip, Google Bookmarks, Linkshelf )

Conversion programs (Transmute, AM-Deadlinks - Bookmark Bridge)

Validation (Linkchecker)

Browser add-ons (Foxmarks).

While those are all interesting, and overlap, they really don't have the same type of function and usage as Linkman, Bookmark Buddy and such.

Now, for Dana, about the tagging / keyword feature, strongly implemented in Powermarks and Linkman, go through this thread some and you will see the best net discussion of tagged bookmarks.

http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?topic=13754.0
Someone MUST make a new PowerMarks program.

Shalom,
Steven Avery

I installed LinkCollector (LC) for quick comparison with my favorite bookmark manager - LinkStash (not freeware, but their website shows a way to get it free). With over 3000 bookmarks, a bookmark manager is essential. Note: I'm IE and Chrome-centric (sorry Firefox fans).

LC features quick/easy install, simple, but attractive interface and instant tabbed access to existing bookmarks for each supported browser. LC wins points with limited Favicon support (refresh). Browser specific tabs are static. Editing and functions like dead link checker can target bookmarks and folders in the LC tab. Help is pretty much non-existent. It takes you to an online knowledgebase which is fairly sparse at present.

LinkStash--a true bookmark database--surges ahead of LC in significant ways including browser integration; two-way synchronization of bookmarks; tags, notes, last visited date, ratings and lots of other attributes available for each bookmark, search features liked saved searches; and encryption/password protection. LS also offers several import/export options and a dead link checker.

This brief comparison confirms my enthusiasm for LinkStash, but thanks for the opportunity to evaluate a similar product.

I wanted to see how this worked in comparison to AM-Deadlinks for detecting those, uh, dead links! in Firefox and IE, and all I can say is WOW, LinkCollector wants money? Really?

First off, it found my Firefox bookmarks, but could not detect IE favorites. But, they are where they have always been since the beginning of the browser wars....do I really have to tell a program made to manage saved urls where IE favorites are stored?

Well, OK. Let's move on to testing dead links in something, so I will give it a shot at Firefox. No, sorry, Firefox has to be closed before LinkCollector can test. But it is closed. Honest. I even peeked to make sure.

Guess I am sticking with AM-Deadlinks...

Another suggestion to save your bookmarks and it's a FREE service on line. I'm using backflip for last ten years and I am quite happy with it. It works with all browsers, and I can use it anywhere beside my own computer. I bookmark everything in the folders I created in the backflip's site. It gives you the tools to do it, and it's very simple to use them. It works with all browsers. Also every time I reformat my hard drive, I simply go to their site and Export my bookmarks and install them on my Explorer browser, and for my other browsers I simply import(copy)them from Explorer to bookmark section, and in few minutes all my browsers' bookmarks are same as before formating my hard drive. For me it works like a charm!

Glad I did not pay money for this.
Verify links only works on Link Collector Links. And then it does not show what did not verify. Only gives an option to delete the unverifiable links. I would like to know what they are "before" I hit the delete button.

Too bad it does not have the link checker that the old Netscape browser had. Version 4.7 I believe.

Well, I just tried a round about way to see if I could transfer my AOL favorites over to IE and this program....clean them out and then put them back. It "almost" worked. But, when I clicked the "Delete Dead Links" process, out of over 2,000 links, there were only a few hundred left. And I checked on some of the ones that had been deleted and they were NOT dead links. Oh well. FYI, I would love a bookmarks program that works with AOL favorites....over 2K favorites are just too many to weed out by hand. :-/

GotD needs to post the the Golden Rules at the top of their page:

If you want to make sure that a program doesn't install correctly, by all means make sure you don't read the Readme.txt file...

Easy and quick install on XP/SP3, FF browser. I dunno- this program does everything it says it does, unless you're a link collector of non-unicode URLs, which doesn't matter to me 'cause I can't read 'em anyway...lol

Thumbs up on this one. Thanks!

I use foxmarks for personal bookmarking. But it is not secure, so I can not use it to bookmark links, internal to my corporate network. I can't trust foxmarks. It is not that I'm afraid a hacker will breakthrough my company's firewall, but if they got inside, then the hacker would have some useful links to attack. Is there a safe for corporate use bookmark holder.

I come down in the middle on the debate about mentioning alternative or related products (freeware or otherwise). I agree it's useful to learn from others what else might be out there in the same category.

On the other hand, just mentioning alternatives without having downloaded and tried the current GOTD offering is lazy and annoying because it leaves out the most important part of such recommendations. Anyone can name another product. The value comes in comparison from at least brief experience with both applications. This helps avoid mistakenly comparing products that are substantially different, implying that you know something else is better when you really have no idea and depriving hard-working developers of a chance to have their creation evaluated by lots of people.

I think anyone using multiple browsers should try this program. It keeps all the bookmarks in a central location and automatically syncs them as part of its install. This incidentally went smoothly. I think the user interface is straightforward, clean (uncluttered), and so far its performance has been right on. Each browser is represented by a tab, and that's consistent with the browsers. There’s a familiarity that I think plays a big part in keeping the learning curve shallow. Contrary to #23 Ashraf, the import and export feature works as it should, as well as the search feature. I was able to sift thru my mass of bookmarks to find the one I wanted in a lot less time than how I was doing it before. Another thing I like about today’s GAOTD is the feature that verifies the status of the bookmark; whether it’s dead or alive. Not being a total slave to the mouse, I liked having the option to make my own hot key combo’s for minimizing/restoring the program and grabbing links.

While I was playing around with the program I suddenly wondered how much chaos would an uninstall create. So I uninstalled it and started to pray. No problems, everything reverted to its original cluttered and unorganized state. Surprisingly, I have to say this is a decent bookmark manager that I’m going to reinstall and continue working with.

I like the look of this one but when I tried to find instructions at using the company's support page:

I found it difficult to read because the translation into English is poor. I wish some of these companies would pay an English writer a few bucks to make their instructions clear.

The installation and licensing went just fine.

To #13, read more closely! You are supposed to exit Firefox, then go the the firefox tab in linkcollector, rightclick on the firefox bookmarks folder you will see there and click 'reload'. It works fine.

I have IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome on my machine, so that I can verify cross-browser operation of web pages I design. I have gotten rid of foxmarks because it slowed down firefox and scrambled bookmarks rather than organizing them. I hoped that linkcollector would be a good solution to keeping things in sync, but it only offered firefox and opera as options. I did not have much luck when I tried to help it locate the appropriate bookmark filex for IE or Chrome, and there seems no support at all for Safari.

I am not impressed, and will probably be removing the program. I plan to try 'transmute' which was recommended by someone else here; one of the reasons I find GAOTD so valuable is that I often find alternative solutions in those cases where the actual giveaway did not work for me. There have also been some wonderful 'finds' given away, that I use often and recommend to friends.

It seems to me that the manufacturers benefit, even when their programs are not well received here. It costs little to package a program for giveaway use, nor are so many copies given away that there is a significant loss of revenue. Many of us would not be purchasing this software anyway, being drawn toward free programs by our nature or at least by our wallets. But we are a good cross-section of reasonably knowledgeable users, and our feedback via this forum is a valuable indicator for the companies that offer us these deals.

Thanks again, GAOTD, and keep up the good work.

The authors also produce 'Verifying Bookmarks' (freeware) but again this did no apparent verifying, and generated no internet traffic when the Verify option was selected.

'Help' only takes to a support ticket request page.
There's a .chm shortcut in the start menu, but no chm file?

BTW, before anyone starts complaining about people mentioning freeware alternatives, let me just add that because these GOTD programs will be useless if a comp has to be reformatted, it is really handy to know what comparable products are out there that can be easily reinstalled. And the comparisons are also really helpful to weigh up whether or not GOTD software is worth downloading.

This is one of those programs that I honestly can't see anyone paying nearly $30 for when there are many fantastic freeware alternatives available, some of which have been written about here. I think most people just want a simple tool to export bookmarks, and for that purpose I agree that Transmute is ideal. Extremely simple to use, and supports Chrome I believe. But for those of us who use Firefox, we already have an add-on that enables us to do this. In terms of backing up bookmarks, Firefox users can simply use the FEBE extension. Anyway, thanks GOTD.
