Re #28,
I meant the PCs froze, not blue-screened; Loaded to the point of seeing the Desktop wallpaper but never loaded Desktop icons nor any programs that normally reside in the System Tray, it just froze and sat there.

That'll teach me for trying to multi-task while typing my comment. LOL

Hardly any options for the advanced user but video quality is, in my opinion, excellent.
Compressed a 12mb file to a given 5.88mb and it gave me 3.83mb.
I am happy with this.

I was never asked for my email either when I ran the program. And I saw no form anywhere to enter my email. No pop-up when I ran the program and no where in the program itself to ask for it. But the About section seems to show it registered. At least it doesn't say it's a demo. So what happened??

Bad registration method, I had installed it and then it could not accept my gmail email for registration, wasting my time.

I installed this with no problems on win 7x64, and it works without any emails and registration code. Nor is there any windows saying anything, it just works after install. I compressed an already compressed mp4 from 110.05 MB down to 93.54 MB on the default med-low compress setting with only a very minor loss in picture quality. Not enough to disrupt the video.

VERY simple interface - thumbs up for me - does what it says with NO extra frills and maybe a 3 minute learning curve.

I'm keeping this one!

I also did not receive an activation prompt. I used the question mark (help) in the program and sent an email requesting a confirmation link. I immediately received a canned message saying someone would contact me in 24 hours. I doubt that I will receive an answer in the activation period, so I assume I will not be keeping this program. Thanks, Giovanni, for sharing the link to the other program to try. You are really a gem on this website. Smiles and waves from Mary

After downloading, installing and activating I tested this software out. I launched the program and it opened to a basic non resizable box. For settings, all you have is check for updates manually or automatic, language choice is either English or German, and the output file destination (default is C:\VideoCompressor) and a log file. That's it. There are only 5 compression setting by dragging a slider button with your mouse. If you drag the slider button past the third stop, you get a waring "that a very high compression degree could affect the video quality" Heed its warning, IMO..

File tested:
MP4
File size 73.61 MB
Attributes:

Length: 13:48 @ 24,830 total frames

Audio:
mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC 22050Hz 32 kb/s tot , stereo (2/0)

Video:
713 kbps, frame rate: 29.971, pic dimensions: 640 x 360
sar and dar = 1.778 (16:9)

Low compression displays file size of 69.93 MB
Second compression setting displays a file size of 62.57 MB
Third compression setting displays a file size of 47.85 MB
Fourth compression setting displays a file size of 33.12 MB
High compression setting displays a file size of 29.44

I chose Third compression (slider button is positioned in the middle)
Resulting attributes:

Length: 13:48 @ 24,830 total frames

Resulting file size: 38.0 MB (39,888,326 bytes) and not 47.85 MB shown in the program window

Audio:
22050Hz 24 kb/s tot , Joint Stereo

Video:
361 kbps, frame rate: 29.971, pic dimensions: 640 x 360
sar and dar = 1.778 (16:9)

My experience with this particular file size reduction was...

Audio: 5/10 audio sounded like it was under water
Video: 10/10 Excellent. No picture degradation.

Recommend that the developer let the user have more control in settings and output parameters such as overriding control over audio output. Had they done that, then I would have given this program a much higher rating. The cost is the audio and it shouldn't be that way. Audio takes up little space, percentage-wise, in a video file.

I'll keep this one for now but I have other video converters in which I can manually set audio and video to compress the file size to my liking.

Cheers..

I have had problems 3 times with .NET Framework so I know
where the people complaining are coming from. Three
different XP computers, (mine and 2 others-I help friends and
family with computer problems) would NOT start after the
required reboot and kept blue-screening thereafter. I had
to do a complete format and reinstall everything to fix it
(at the time I didn't know about the special uninstaller).
It was embarrassing besides frustrating telling them I/they
had to start over on their computer because of installing
ONE program so I avoid it like the plague when I can.
But I wanted to check out today's giveaway so I tried
to install it. It did install fine without problems this
time.
Program did activate fine for me (XP SP3) but still tries
to access the Internet when starting the program (with update
check disabled in Settings).

The main feature of this program is this that it's simple to use for those that find bit rates etc too difficult to understand.

People do need to understand that a compressed video loses quality so compressing videos on the hard drive to free up space may not be a good idea.

Like others I installed on a Vista 32 bit system with no problems, however it did not prompt for e-mail or any other information and appears to have activated automatically.

Can anyone explain this?

I compressed a 5GB file to 1.5 GBs and although it took several hours, the result is more than satisfactory. It was easy to set up and easy to use. For me, this is a keeper. Thanks GOTD and thanks to Video Compressor!

Does it accept files with the extension "ts" as input?

Could anybody give an advice about what kind of conversion I should do to the videos my HD DVB-T MPEG4 Receiver produces in order to make them smaller (in terms of disk space, not screen size)? With every recording it creates a folder with three files: 000.dvr, ifno3.dvr, and 000.ts. For only 22 min. of recording it makes a .ts file of 508 MB. Does this sound right?
What changes to the settings of the device would be appropriate for the smallest size (I think there hasn’t been any change after adjusting the video resolution and the aspect mode)?

In my test trial, the file size shrank about 20%, but lost some from the audio and got less frames/sec.
Not worth the trouble for such a little difference.
Uninstalled.

Downloaded and installed fine. I even received the email to activate right way. However, after I clicked the link to verify my email and it told me that the software would automatically unlock, it did not unlock. Every time I try to open the program, I still get the pop up for my email address. :(

For those who ask why some people do not like programs that require .net. It is because many times in the past Microsoft have had to offer patches to the different versions of .net that have caused serious problems with your installation of windows. Sometimes the only solution was to download a special uninstaller that was maintained not by Microsoft themselves, but a man who worked for them I believe. Then once it had uninstalled all traces correctly, you had to download the latest versions of any .net you needed (often versions 2, 35 and 4 as they were not backwards-compatible).

So apart from the ever-present security risks of zero-day flaws in .net (or possibly applications that required .net), whenever there would be a security patch, you had to hope that it would not do permanent damage to your installation and require a complete reinstall of Windows and all of your other software.

I have had versions 2-4 installed for a while on different versions of Windows. and there were regular problems with installing updates up until about 2 years ago. Since then I have personally had no problems, but if you do a quick search, you will find that it has created major headaches for many people - Mainly in the past. While it seems much better behaved lately, many people have been burned badly in the past and will not trust it now, or are concerned about it's security.

Now it is baked-in to Windows, it does not seem as much of a problem as it was when it was an optional update. For the problems it has been known to cause, you can read articles like this.

Installed and activated (when I gave my email address)on my old XP sp3 rig without incident. Tried it on a 750MB film I wanted to fit on a CD (my burners don't seem to support overburning). The minimum reduction available is 25%, which reduced it to 634MB in two hours: not bad for a computer this old! ffmpeg consumed about 90% of the single-core cpu during this time, but the system remained responsive. More options might have been useful, but as a straightforward program which does what it says, with at 25% reduction little discernible difference in quality, it has value.

Is the giveaway activated automatically? There is nowhere to request activation, contrary to what the readme file says. The readme file seems misleading.

It's funny how often one sees comments like: Saw the phrase ".NET". Uninstalled my brain. Quiver, quiver.

Hint: .NET is simply a cluster of operating system files that extend your already installed operating system functionality/compatibility. In a sense, you could say they are OS files that were omitted from the original installation to save space until such time as an app needs them.

For today's gift, thanks GotD, Abelssoft (and Karl for his daily, to-the-point, fair reviews).

A single function program at a single function program price, can't complain there!
A really useful download for those inexperienced in video compression because of its simplicity.

However, for those of you with a little better understanding of video compression an excellent Free program is available at the following link.
http://www.moo0.com/?top=http://www.moo0.com/software/VideoConverter/

This is by far my favourite compression program because of the variety of choices it offers; choice of required output size in bytes, relative frame size, and whether quality or size is the overriding factor.

One particular function I really like is that you can create a really short sample from beginning, middle or end of the video to give you an idea what the finished product will look like.

I am impressed, I installed this on Windows 7, compressed a 60mb video as far as it would let me which said 24mb but it was actually 5mb, playing it in a small window the video is very acceptable and easy to send to someone by email. Thank you for this software!

Very handy app if you a movie nut and would like to save space in your PC or share your video with anyone else via the web.

Supports FLV, WMV, SWF, MPEG, MP4, 3GP, M4V, AVI, MKV, MOV, F4V, RM formats, namely the most common ones.

So overall it deserves a THUMBS UP, even though "Free Video Compressor" does the same and even more for FREE (for instance, it can compress just a part of video and customize its aspect ratio):

Enjoy!!

@riv #4 "It may be more useful to re-encode to lower bit rate" That's exactly what this prog. does!
It does a pretty good job too, as long as you don't compress too far, then the sound really suffers.

LOL...
rename video converter to video compressor
and voila
a "new class of software"

might be good, but no one can do miracles on such (already!) compressed formats.

(most) Converters give you the same range of options: by choosing the bit rate ...

Only advantage: provides this "estimate" function; but as Karl (thanks to you almost always useful comments!) shows above: it is hard to REALLY estimate in advance the real size due to the permanently changing of video content.

During installation, computer flashed a dialogue box alerting error.
I chose to abort and forget about this software.

I will stick with 7Zip and Bandizip if I wish to compress any video.
But video files are usually already compressed and cannot be compressed much further. It may be more useful to re-encode to lower bit rate (less IQ) and mp4.

C:\Program Files\Video Compressor 2014\ffmpeg.exe

An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory:
Movefile failed; code 5.
Access is denied.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.

Installed and registered without problems on a Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit system. Registration online with checked email. The "terms&conditions", which you have to sign are on their website and can be changed without notice to whatever terms. This is not good - it should be bound with the installation software.

A German company with name and address. Does a little bit in every field. From PC backup over PhotoSharing to PC optimization, even the screenshot is not missing...

A non resizable, very stylish interface opens. In the settings you can switch the language to German or not - and you can disable updates.

You add a video, you define a "compression level" from low to high and start. The VideoCompressor has a build in video player to check the video.

I selected a small video with 37,56 MB, the estimated target size was
35,68 MB the compression took about 2 min.

Video a 3:30 .mp4 video 1280x720 1305 kBit/s 25 frames/s - from the Net google : Pierre Sang Boyer TARTI GAUFRES recette sucre (a hobby...)

The new compressed video with "low compression" has now 40,8 MB...

I compressed it once again in the middle (50%) compression. The estimated target size was 24,41 MB. The compressed file size was 20,52 MB. The video bit rate dropped to 716 kBit/s and the audio bit rate from 192 kBit/s to 96. The output file has as additional part of the file name the compression level. In this case a _50. There is no big visible difference. You can test it with the same file, if you want.

A nice little tool, in my short test, does what it claims without problems. An Interface which I like.

I'll keep it.
