Most important components are the intelligent reconstruction of the photo, as the eyes have originally perceived it. Simultaneously the innovative selective object recognition ensures that only the relevant parts of a photo are optimized. The dynamic range of the photos will be extended, faces as part of the photos recognized and in accordance with their relevance calculated, incorrect exposures compensated, correction of colours and shadows are brightened up. The software decides self-sufficient, which parts of a photo need to be optimized.

@14 ric
Engelmann's Photomizer allows batch processing. Simply Good Pictures doesn't and its GUI can't change between 2windows layout and others. Internally they seem to be the same.

@everybody
It happened to me with prior versions that installing newer Simply Good Pictures deactivated prior version of Photomizer (giveaway from somewhere). Therefore I recommend a backup before or at least setting a system restore point or simailar.

Don't rate this really. All it does is up the saturation, sharpness and contrast, which is ok if you want that effect, but far from appropriate for all images. And if you select the noise reduction or artefact removal it basically just blurs the pic to make noise and artefacts less obvious. And pushing their driver update software on us all just confirms the thumbs down. You also don't get my email address, just offer the software as is without data mining!

Installed the program on Windows XP SP3 without a hitch. Registration came via e-mail and was a simple process. Tried out this program via drag and drop. I didn't have to do a thing and it made a slightly blurry and on the dark side jpeg and the results were absolutely great. It brightened up the picture and made it less blurry. I'm happy with this give away and it is a keeper for me.

This program doesn't require any learning curve and is easy to use for those that don't want to be bothered with complex picture adjustments.

#36 - Same here - I found out it installed an older version than I already had.

And since everyone is talking about Deep Freeze and Time Freeze and such I'll throw in this bit of advice. Time Freeze won't cover some of the bad malware out there. Deep Freeze will put you in Deep Doodoo if you ever have a problem with it and need to uninstall it. Even for a computer tech it was almost impossible to get rid of it. I think I had to use a restore from several months back. Shadow Defender is the BEST by far of any of these types of programs. Safer, better in a number of ways and it doesn't have the potential for a mess like Deep Freeze created. just my 2¢

Hi, all in all it's a very useful Photo Program, or simple Tool, that can nicely improve a picture - using either fully automatic options, or as little as needed. I was glad to see it back here (I lost it's previous version) so thanks GOTD and Engelman.

As for Installation, hmm.., not as straight forward as expected. That part of it really ought to be either improved, or replaced with something more sophisticated!? I have pretty decent laptop, and even with Win7 don't run into difficulties installing anything graphically 'demanding', yet after installing Simply Good Pictures 3 and obtaining Reg Key (again too awkward, why??) - when trying to run it got 'fatal' Error (honestly, grrhh), log file created, had to reinstall it using 'Repair' option on starting this procedure, after which MS .NET Framework 4 started setting itself (for ages)...... and then it worked. Even reg Key is not a one-liner when copying and pasting. WHY all this, why all this proverbial pain in a butt?

Final Verdict: Really neat Program to use an keep, Installation leaves a lot to be desired imho.

One other note. I've got a screaming fast computer and was trying this out on a picture on a Ramdisk. So it should have been very fast. It ran fine until I decided to try the 'Noise' function and set it to 82%. That took close to a minute watching the spinning wheel before it rendered that change. It didn't really look much different than before I tried the 'noise' function. On my last computer that probably would have been going for 30 minutes.

Yeah I feel sorry for anyone with a modem that doesn't (or does) have MS .NET framework installed. Above it says it will install .NET v3 but it installs V4. I already have V4.03 installed and apparently that isn't good enough so I'm getting a huge download of some apparently newer version (thankfully DSL speed). I hate any programs that insist on using the .NET framework. I'll put up with it just to see how this works but for anyone with modem speed it's going to be slow and painful.

The installer would not let me change the install path.

I hit the browse button on the installer's GUI, set the path, but it was not changed. The default path was still shown. I have Simply Good Pictures 2 installed. It made no reference to that, no helpful message, just ignored me. Novel.

#25 mike.
Generally when I comment about the price of software I do it from a developer's point of view, that is the amount of work to produce it.
Often I will see a program developed from a very cheap component with very little additional work selling for more than the price of the component.
Regarding ease of development, Windows varies in its ease of development from very difficult to extremely easy, Android is something of a middle ground.
The program I mentioned would in my opinion take a considerable amount of development, it is certainly well thought out.
Windows is going through a rough patch, so rough that I worry about its future particularly since the Chinese government has banned it for use in its departments.
Overpricing Windows programs will only increase the probability that other operating systems will take its place, not something I wish to see as from a developer's point of view it is very versatile.
I'm afraid that the overpricing of software we have seen recently will be detrimental to its is future hence my quite regular complaints regarding pricing.

"P.S. Hey Karl…why to pay money if you can do the same things as “Faronics DeepFreeze” for FREE?"

"Giovanni, for one simple reason. I don’t change my software so often. I have TimeFreeze on my other computer, where I have not paid for additional licenses. TimeFreeze has one “disadvantage” – it can be uninstalled and tricked by professional malware and it crashes (at least on my computers), when the “freeze” buffer runs full."

Purely FWIW, as I imagine some folks will be trying these sorts of apps now that they've been again mentioned...

To me it's important to after a full backup try whatever virtualization app for a period of at least a few weeks to judge if it does what it's supposed to &/or has any complications *on your system*. I use an old GOTD from Wondershare, also called Time Freeze, but it's different than the ToolWiz app. Some others have not gotten along well with my other installed software -- all of these apps AFAIK add drivers, so compatibility [& backing up before trying] is extra important.

One downside to virtualization software is the same, but to a lesser degree as with VMs -- you're adding layers & making things more complicated, i.e. less efficient & slower. Also some virtualization software will not survive a restart, so it's useless when one is needed or desired. I also do not believe in relying on virtualization software as protection against mal-ware, at least not if you have more than one partition or drive, or if you insert a USB stick or attach an external drive. It's probably also possible to alter the restart instructions that would normally clear the record of changes made. To be sure it does add some protection, but I don't feel it should be relied on as a sole means of protection. I don't recommend virtualization apps for security protection simply because I'm afraid of it leading to complacence -- when someone feels they're absolutely protected they let their guard down.

That all said, there are several programs of this nature available, free & not. Some like Time Freeze can also be suitable for occasional use -- others are better suited to an always on state, where they will preserve their state after a restart for example, but saving data permanently requires added work.

tried it, but isn't right for me, I have lightroom and photoshop so I can pretty much fix just about anything.
I put in a pic that was too bright because of a window and with a lot of dark corners. It did brighten it up a bit but
no where as good as I needed. second was of a boat, and the change was so subtle you couldn't tell it really did anything. I still gave this a thumbs up because if u have no editing software, this will be good for you.

#1: "Finding it a bit of a shock as I switch between my android tablet and PC; just bought an amazing piece of Android software for $4.99, Torque Pro for those interested, and yet an almost single function program for the PC costs around five times as much."

[With apologies for being OT, as usual in hopes someone will find it useful or interesting.]

Android I think may be easier to code for, plus I think that with the vastly more limited, far less powerful processor, seems all they write apps for are games & software having to do with the camera. FWIW so many more people take pictures with their cell rather than cheap cameras that the bigger brands all pulled out of the bottom end camera market -- there's certainly an audience for photo related apps. One of the exceptions is Torque Pro -- an app designed to read the data from a Bluetooth OBD2 device.

There are a lot of those devices on the market out of China surprisingly cheap, yet as most such small electronics sold directly, good documentation & software are usually lacking. For those wondering why pay $5 for an Android app when most are free or near free, while all these OBD2 devices fit a standard plug or socket on the car or truck, the data is not all the same, so there is some work involved, & maybe licensing fees to assemble a database with the translations for many makes & models of cars/trucks. The info they provide is sensor data & stored error codes, which are the same thing as the error messages you [hopefully don't] get with Windows software. By that I mean that when certain error conditions are met, a hard coded message appears that is often not as helpful as you'd like or hope.

Practically speaking these OBD2 devices [& similar] are handy for the skilled DIY crowd, e.g. trends in temp or pressure readings might tip you off to a developing problem before it causes lots of damage. And when the engine light comes on, knowing what error code triggered it might at the least help you tell if the mechanic or service dept. is being honest, e.g. if the code is for the alternator [which charges the battery], you may or may not need brake work, but that's not why the light's on. OTOH the data's very often not nearly specific enough to fully diagnose a problem. Note that you don't want to clear an error code from the vehicle's memory before you take it in for service -- if it doesn't reappear many, perhaps most mechanics will not want to take your word for it [Your device &/or software might be wrong, your memory of what you saw might not be accurate, it might be a trap to get them to advise the wrong repair so you can contact whatever consumer agency etc.].

#7: "Can anyone tell me exactly what the heck “Uninstalled via reboot” is?"

[I'm not disagreeing with previous answers, but rather hoping that by wording it a bit differently it might help one or two people]

There are different methods for checking out software before you commit to a permanent install. I use VMs [Virtual Machines] where I can track what installation does, exactly. The disadvantage of that approach is that a VM uses pretend hardware [software emulates hardware], so I can't judge real world performance. Karl uses virtualization software. Apps like Time Freeze redirect anything that would be written to the system disk/partition to a virtual hard drive [a single file that pretends it's a real hard drive]. That way when software like Simply Good Pictures is installed, no changes at all are made to the Windows disk/partition. Those changes can later be made permanent, by copying them to the real hard drive, or abandoned -- when you abandon changes you reboot or restart the PC/laptop.

Simply Good Pictures is a decent program if you like or want to take an automated rather than more hands-on approach to making your pictures look better. Personally my quibble with Engelmann software is that by using Windows Installer [.msi setup files], .NET, & HDX4 Direct Show files [filters], the impact on Windows is higher than a lot of similar software that does the same things. Installing Engelmann software doesn't do anything bad -- it's just their nature that installing one will make more changes to Windows than some alternatives. Of course any extra impact on Windows will not make a big difference to a lot of folks.

#16: "Has anyone done a comparison between this software’s auto optimization feature and…
Adobe Photoshop Album Starter 3.2? (Discontinued but available if you do some research.)
Ashampoo Photo Optimizer 3? (Given away here. 5 is the latest version.)"

.
There are a few apps where the developer(s) have really gone in depth to come up with automated features that pros will actually want & use, e.g. Adobe with the latest Lightroom, DXO, PhaseOne etc. By in depth I mean that they've thrown a Lot of resources at it, but then they expect their customers to pay them a lot of money in return. Most everything else uses the same filtering &/or adjustments, sometimes tailored towards more vivid colors &/or maybe more extreme contrasts to make them stand out -- not everyone will like the results, but it will get that software noticed in comparison.

That's not to knock something like Simply Good Pictures, since if you think about it, there's really very little software can do to improve an image when it can't understand what it's a picture of, when it can't say with certainty "Oh, that's a face so I can do this & this but not that", or more involved, make sure the skin colors between the face & arms etc. match, & with tans & makeup & such, they may not match in real life. Basically all an auto adjustment can do without that sort of understanding is to make sure the entire range is used between pure white & pure black, maybe run a noise filter, & maybe boost saturation, selectively depending on color or across the board.

So to answer your question directly, it's a matter of which GUI you like, & your personal tastes re: accuracy vs. enhancement, e.g. tweaking the colors to make them more vivid but less natural. I bought Photo Optimizer for my wife's PC for quick stuff, but I've also got a licensed copy of PaintShop Pro on there for more involved work.

Most people, even sophisticated people, can't tell the diff in an 80% JPEG and a higher one. 80% is the point of very diminishing returns on pic quality, but not size.

OH,

I just love Engelmann Media applications and the spam they send you that you can't opt out of. They provide an image in their e-mail and it's not click-able. I got it to work by moving the spam to my inbox and then clicked on the link and it brought up one of those malware driver update downloads.

I'd like to know why there are 2 entries in Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features. One of the registry keys has entries about bundled products

Also, take a look at the .log files in the C:\users\your name\appdata\local\temp folder. I little trick here since most people usually never clean it out. Set up CCleaner under Settings > Include to delete files in that directory when running CCleaner.

Engelmann Media products seem to always loose the key and state they're unregistered. There's a file named EMRegSys.dll in the System32 or SysWOW64 folder that gets modified if you install another one of their products.

I've had one of their program fail to start, noticed the EMRegSys.dll in the installation directory and deleted it. The program started properly afterword.

Since they are known for spamming and installing produts that "Phone home", I refuse to use any of their products. Any simple image editor that has an auto process > Brightness and Contrast does the same thing.

I'm going to dig into this even deeper and try to post back today with more info.

Be aware! With a reboot, everything is lost, which was added to your protected directory during the frozen state. Make exceptions for your private documents, your eMail account and your private data - or store everything on another drive.

I played around with this app for about an hour (others would say testing), and my results are somewhere between Karl's and Giovanni's, what will say: It does it's job quite well - definitely better than Softorbit's Picture Doctor. If you have a messed up pic, your heart hangs on, it can give you an obviously better result than the original. And it does it in an easy way, but I would not recommend it for fine tuning.

In January I asked Karl the same question about *reboot" and his advice made my *SW testing life* definitely easier! Many thanks for it! And also many thanks for your daily reviews, they are what I label with "serious fun" - amusing to read and very helpful.

And also many thanks to Giovanni! Following his tipps I have some really good apps running on my comps, always free and UPDATEABLE.

Downloaded, installed, got the key fast. Activated.

Tested it.
Result: Good.

To make the test difficult, I used a badly under-exposed photo that Soft Orbits Picture Doctor (a give away by another site on previous occasion) failed to improve. Simply Good Pictures 3 did a good job of making this photo look much better.

Tested with 3 other photos.
Good results. If your original photo was quite alright to begin with, it will not do much to change your photo. That is good.

Quickly done. You can permanently change the output folder to save to. Just use the menu to "Save as" and change destination folder. Otherwise the software will default to My Pictures folder.

Supports drag + drop of file.

But it seems it cannot do a batch process of multiple photos yet.
Perhaps that is because each photo may require a different degree of improvement.

@Bob - "Uninstalled via reboot" most likely means Karl is running some sort of sandbox program. He can make any changes he wants - install software, change settings, etc. - and then revert back to his original system by simply rebooting. When you reboot, all the changes you've made just disappear and you're back to your original system. Really handy for testing new software programs without taking the chance they'll screw up something in your system.

@Bob (#7)- Karl uses Faronics Deepfreeze program to preserve his operating system in a "frozen" state.
Its great for testing new software and scripts without the need for a virtual OS.(It takes some forethought however when setting things up before freezing your partitions.)

Thus if he doesnt like the software he just installed he just reboots
to return his system to its originally frozen state.

Of course. I am a very "anxious" computer user. I would never install unknown software on my computer - especially, when I install programs for testing purpose.

I install everything in a virtual environment, where I allow bad things to happen starting from defect drivers to unwanted browser addons, services and even "virus. I am curious to see, what happens, without destroying my perfect working and clean system.

With a "reboot" I destroy the temporary virtual system and I return to exactly the system state, before the installation.

If I like to keep a (in my eyes) good software, I let it run for a week or so in the virtual state, until I decide to install it in my real system - or on the same day in case of GOATD later...

For this I suggest to use "TimeFreeze" Google! It saves your computer. Promised!

Very good Photo editing tool today to improve the overall quality of your photos.

It's also a very easy to use tool, since everything is done automatically (tonal values, resharpening etc...): so it's perfect for noobs or extremely lazy people who loves programs that do not require a steep learning curve.

Best feature is definitely its ability to optimize only the revelant parts of a pic, in order to improve the overall looking.

So it deserves a THUMBS UP, even though there are tons of FREEWARE out there which can do even more for FREE!

Just to mention a few ones....

The setup program will (without asking) try to add a new quick start item, and if you have another program that makes you aware of that, and who asks if you will allow that new quick start item, and if you choose to not allow it, then the setup will fail. Ah! Engelmann as usual ...

- Karl! Why do you wrote "company with name and address" and not wrote that is was Engelmann? It has saved my time of starting to install it!

Actually - I gave it a very QUICK testing - and this version seems to STAY in the folder where the previous picture ws "titivated" - and that **IS** a PLUS for me !!

No more wasting time to go back to the folder where pix need to be improved!

What I don't like is the the "NO! you can't use **THAT** e'mail address to register!!!!" and in "Krautspiel" too - so non-speakers of that language are left guessing WHAT is permitted!

I've had it from the first version - (per)Version two made me jump thro hoops and go back and select the folder & NEXT pic each and every time - damn them. That was quite probably the same with version 1 !

I hope & pray that this version has the ability to "lock on" to the folder where the pix need titivating till a re-select of folder is made - or it won't be staying long on my "Viagra" (HARD) disks!!!

Installed and registered via checked email without problems on a Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit system.

A German company with name and address and a google map to visit the company's boss personally...

I love marketing claims, the cheapest candy bar in the southern hemisphere, the most intelligent automatic shutdown program outside Peking and here Simply Good Pictures is one of the best fully automatic image optimizations in the world!. No, I didn't add the exclamation mark.

After installation, this company wants to sell their "super easy driver updater". Upon start a simple resizable window opens. In the settings you can change the language to German or not and you can define the JPG quality - why is the default 80%? Is the optimization process so lousy, that it does not deserve a higher percentage? Deactivate automatic update!

You can add a picture, define the degree of "automatic optimization". 150% of what??? Repair artifacts and noise 2% of what??? and control the preview.

The programmer claims The automatic photo optimization consists of complex connected psycho visual and mathematical procedures

A "psycho visual procedure" means that a bright photo looks better than a dull one and "mathematical procedures" is simply adding values.

If you can live with marketing hype, than this is a good photo "optimizer". The result is the same as with others "optimizers", you have to define, what looks good in your eyes. That simple.

Uninstalled via reboot. I use Faronics DeepFreeze since years. And to answer another question : No, i have not more fun of my life yet, even if I went to this computer at 6:25 to see, whether it switched on automatically at 6:30. LOL.

So the first and obvious question is what’s new in version 3 as compared to version 2 that we already have from a previous offer?

A visit to the site didn't make me any wiser.

Installed and registered after the rigmarole of retrieving the serial number via e-mail.
Tested it on a rather dull looking file and it made a big improvement, as it should for so little functionality for the price.

Finding it a bit of a shock as I switch between my android tablet and PC; just bought an amazing piece of Android software for $4.99, Torque Pro for those interested, and yet an almost single function program for the PC costs around five times as much.

Enough of my moaning, this program performed beautifully and I shall be keeping it but I would never pay such a high price for it.
