@25.. Mike, thanks but I have to disagree. There are many "solutions" but it requires 3 or 4 steps and sometimes, different movies require additional steps/software. Guess it shows just how "un-standard" the standards were back in the day. With ALL the formats out there and a VAST MAJORITY of them are not used (but still supported), is it really that hard to code in the ability to READ much less convert a HD DVD? I would copy the whole contents to my 4tb mycloud drive and go by another if I had too in order to be able to watch my movies without having to fire up the 360 everytime I wanted to watch a HD movie. Sorry but for me, my HD stash produces a higher quality picture then the BD counterpart. Example, "The perfect storm". The HD version is sooo much better then the BD version. Maybe it's just my system but playing a BD on the PS3 vs HD on the 360, the 360 wins though I'm not a microcrap fan boy.

>Besides, except MP4, it also supports many other output formats, like VOB, TS, MKV, WMV, M4V, etc)
Wrong that is the Blu-Ray Converter product, please the facts right.

It works, but interface, output format selection are to complex.
And why all these names for formats that is the same. This could easily be made user friendly but, no much better to make it "look like" it can support oh so many output formats.

It does not support MKV output as stated here on GOTD, so I uninstall again and go back to a good Ripper/Converter.

PS. And as some already stated it also installs already install files !!!

I agree with the earlier poster. It would be great to see a HD DVD ripper/converter offered at GOTD. I would like to backup my HD DVD discs while my drive still works.

Installed quickly, registration data was automatically entered by the software. Upon opening the program for the first time, I saw that it defaulted to VGA resolution (640x480), so I changed it to 854x480 to maintain the 16:9 ratio of the source BD. I also changed the Video Bitrate from 1200 to 2000, the Audio Bitrate from 128 to 192, and the Sample Rate from 44100 to 48000. I ripped the 2 hrs 42 mins Unrated Director's Cut of "In The Name Of The King" in 1 hr 14 mins. Per GSpot analysis of the file, the Video Codec is mp4v, the Audio Codec is mp4a, the fps is 29.971, the Sample Rate is 48kHz. My requested video bitrate was changed to 1997, and the audio was changed to 165. The file is 2.45 GB, and produces a beautiful, sharp, smoothly moving picture, expanded to my chosen resolution width of 1680 on my Dell 24" monitor, with excellent stereo audio, using Corel WinDVD Pro 11.
My PC has a 4-core 970 Black AMD Processor, a 256 GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD with Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 OS, and the file in process was being sent to a 1 TB Seagate HDD with 64 MB cache. The CPU load held steady at 60%, with occasional bursts to 90%, and usage of my 16 GB of RAM was negligible.

To Miles: You should learn something about a subject before you pretend to be a snobbish expert.

To Peter: Have you ever watched a Blu-ray on a 70" Full HD LED monitor? Do that sometime, and you'll know why it is best to buy the Blu-ray and rip it to MP4 for portable devices. At least, I hope you have that much discernment. Blu-ray is far from obsolete.

To tc1uscg: I feel for your plight, but I'm sure you can understand why there probably won't be any NEW software that includes the HD-DVD format, seeing as it was dropped by its' last champion, Toshiba, 6 years ago.

To Thys Barker: Remember that room filled with Keypunch Operators, punching holes in cards? I was the first Sears Credit Manager to receive a printout of all my accounts, so I've been exposed to this insanity about as long as you. I hope you got to retire; I recommend it highly. It's a relief to answer only to my wife. :-)

Here's the problem with deleting an application's DLLs from its folder:

Sometimes, a (poorly coded) program will look for a specific entry point/address in a DLL, and needs that one specific version to work properly.

It may work properly with the general purpose DLL in the Windows folder now, but let's say Microsoft updates the DLL to a newer version.

Suddenly, the program is broken.

Something to consider.

One thing I wanted to make clear is that this program will not only convert Blu-ray discs and DVD's but it will also convert video files to MP4.
I tried using it and it was fast and easy to use.
I would recommend this program.

RE: #6 & removing files etc...

Microsoft recommends dev's include their C/C++ runtimes installed to C:\ Windows\ WinSxS. Check that folder & chances are it's huge on your PC/laptop. *Many* times things will work fine if you skip that step -- I install the app whenever possible to a VM 1st, monitoring installation, & when software includes that stuff try copying the app without it to winXP/7/8.1. I don't believe in trying to remove those runtimes manually because 1) installation makes many registry changes that are at best very difficult to undo, & 2) the individual installs take up little space so return for time invested is minimal.

As far as today's GOTD, or any of the similar apps that have been on GOTD, there are often files you might do without. Disk space is cheap enough that I don't bother personally because I don't use these apps enough to justify the checking I'd have to do afterwards. An app like Tipard Blu-ray to MP4 Ripper has been setup to work with the files that are in its folder -- if I update one or more of those files, or assume it can do without, or assume it will use another copy somewhere that works just as well, then I either have to carefully check the results of multiple conversions, or accept that it might screw up. Neither is worth the few MB I'd save IMHO. If I needed the disk space that badly I'd just delete a few of these apps.

"check the following files and see if they exist in the C:\windows32 and or C:\windows\SysWOW64 directories:
akdmo.dll, akmfpl.dll..."

.
These are not part of the normal Windows or winmedia stuff. They are used by at least Aieseesoft & Tipard. They are not normally installed to the system folder(s). Google akdmo.dll & I get no microsoft.com hits as I would expect. You could put these files in a system folder, & since those folders are where software looks for files, your app should find them there. That would let you get rid of duplicates, assuming they were all the same versions etc., but whether the space savings would be worth adding bloat to the system folder(s) would be up to you -- I mean what does the whole set weigh, 6 MB?. The files are not registered with Windows so their location isn't locked down.

"There’s possible savings here of 500,000 KB"

15 years ago that would concern me, but you're talking less space than a CD. Once a month or so I burn all the apps & stuff I've downloaded from GOTD etc. along with updates & such to 2 or 3 DVDs to get them off my HDD. Sorry but when I've got apps installed taking up several GB each, 500 MB no longer concerns me. In fact I've found CD blanks have gone up quite a bit in price, & are actually getting a bit rarer on store shelves -- I guess I'm not the only one. :)

#10: "Is there a free Blu-ray player or ripper that works with newest Blu-ray movies without need to connect to the internet?"

Giovanni typically posts links to a free copier or two -- if not today check previous giveaways. Whether they will handle the newest disc with the always evolving DRM is another matter -- you'd just have to try whatever & see, bearing in mind that the only way to be sure everything's cool is to watch the complete movie. That's because DRM can include stuff like jumbled scene order, kill switches 20 minutes or more in, & distorted video and/or dropped frames. Once you copied a disc to your HDD, free video converters as well as many that show up on GOTD will handle the conversion that's the ripping part -- doing it in 2 steps doesn't matter since a ripper has to copy to your HDD as well, even if it's during conversion, so all you lose is convenience.

As far as doing it completely off-line, the problem is DRM seems to be constantly updating -- that's based on the changelogs for AnyDVD & DVDFab updates that regularly show up on videohelp.com, which I check daily. Most of these apps check the dev's database to see how to handle whatever disc, so users need to update the software less often, & then they still have updates 3 or 4 times a month. Software that doesn't phone home for those directions either needs updated more frequently, or it won't likely handle the latest DRM showing up on the newest discs.

As far as players go... there are quite a few players that can handle Blu-Ray video without DRM, though I'm not aware of any free ones that can play the Java menus & special features. Blu-Ray players like those from DVDFab, Tipard etc. work more or less like their copiers & rippers, calling home to figure out how to by-pass DRM to play the movie. Players like PowerDVD have the keys & such to fully play Blu-Ray discs just like your stand-alone player, but they're not free because at the least they have to pay licensing fees to the Blu-Ray folks. With players bear in mind that the movie may be spread across more than one .m2ts file that may not be in sequence -- in fact there may be a hundred or so .m2ts files present. They use a playlist to tell the player what to play in what order, but there may be a hundred or so of those, many of which may be fake. A player has to figure out which playlist is the right one to play, which even the licensed player software can get wrong occasionally -- I know because I like to watch Blu-Ray, & have 3 licensed & 4 GOTD players because one or more will somewhat often have problems playing a disc.

* * *

#13: "- For unencrypted blurays please use VLC."

Actually there are several free players at videohelp.com designed more to play Blu-Ray than VLC, which is a great but general purpose player. Personally I don't even like to use VLC for the HD video files that I'll put on Blu-Ray because I think its behavior gets pretty annoying. Specifically I hate the way it automatically goes to almost full size 1080p when often I just want to check a video to see what it is & make sure it plays -- every way around that has side effects I feel are worse -- but there are a lot of minor annoyances as well that players intended more for HD avoid.

* * *

#15: "It doesn’t read/convert HD DVD’s. No, not the standard “HD” as most think but the HD DVD’s you play on your xbox 360 HD dvd player. I have over 30 HD dvd’s I want to convert and without having to jump through 3 to 4 processes to do so, no one currently has a app that will do this in one swipe. "

Google. There are solutions out there [I got over 6 mill hits on Google], like I think MakeMKV, but they're only going to become more rare as time goes on & HD DVDs are thrown out. No offense intended, but no company is going to invest a lot of time & money on the format that lost the war with Blu-Ray so many years ago when they've go an expanding potential customer base using Blu-Ray.

* * *

#18: "Rip a bluray to mp4? Why not just get the mp4? Bluray is obsolete."

Because I can't stream the same quality with subs. The best I can hope for is lower quality [lower bit reate] 1080i via cable or Netflix, compared to high quality 1080p at a bit rate of 30-40 on a Blu-Ray disc. Of course some of the pirates will chuckle at that -- I just choose not to go that route. :)

Thank you for your courteous reply; I don't doubt your ability the real issue is that many inexperienced users rely on information from this site, I just wanted them to be aware how dangerous removing DLLs can be so that they wouldn't destroy their system.
You misunderstood me I was not implying that deleting a DLL file would increment the counter; from my understanding when a DLL is introduced to the system the counter is then incremented and when it is removed it is reduced by one, the reason being that more than one program may be using the DLL. Hence, removing it by your method could result in the system removing the last DLL thinking there was one remaining.
Obviously my information comes from information posted on the Internet, if I am in error in any way a correction would be much appreciated, as far as I was aware my source was reliable.

XP-Man,

Yes, you are correct.

However, deleting these files does not increment the registry. You can put any number of instances in the ShareDLLs section and you will have no problems.

I've been doing this for years, trust me.

I have this in a commercial version sold under a different brand name and can say it works perfectly. the only 'problem' BD's have been those which are physically damaged to the point where I can't play them on any of my BD players so you'd not expect anything different.

Highly recommended if you need this sort of thing.

I use mine to rip my DVD's and BD's to play on my iPad.

And to answer the usual question, yes, it rips DVD's perfectly.

Windows keeps track of DLLs by using a counter in the registry by removing them in this way you disrupt this counter mechanism.
Removing DLLs can cause a great deal of problems with the system, the small amount of space saved compared with the disruption you can cause makes it not worthwhile.
Removing DLLs in this manner is only for the experts!

@10 Edgar

- For unencrypted blurays please use VLC.

- For encrypted blurays nobody seems to know any free ones. There are only 30days trials. Please don't conflict with copyright laws in your country.
Tipard Blu-ray to MP4 Ripper 7.2.6 GOTD has got a preview function but it's resolution is less than DVD! After conversion VLC probably will work. But I don't know whether this GOTD has to be connected always to internet. Look out: There have been softwares which graded down to next version trial if autoupdate hadn't been blocked.

Normally with every player there comes some OEM player software.
You can't suppose that a Blu-ray player can always know the latest encryption without connecting to the internet, it's a contradiction in itself. Otherwise you have to download latest software version or update after every encryption update.

Or do as I do: only buy DVDs. LoL

You are exactly right.

For the advanced user, check the following files and see if they exist in the C:\windows32 and or C:\windows\SysWOW64 directories:

akdmo.dll, akmfpl.dll, akwmadmod.dll, AKWMADMOE.dll, AKWMVDECOD.dll, AKWMVENCOD.dll, and AKWMVXENCD.dll. These are all Windows Media Runtime files and should be installed by default to the system directories.

Therefore they are not needed in the Tipard directtory.

Just to be safe, rename them first, then execute the program.

If it works properly, delete them from the Tipard directory.

This will save you 5.6MB of space. All Tipard products as well as the affiliate programs install these unneccc3ssary files.

If you're strictly using the English version, you can delete splashscreen_de.png, splashscreen_fr.png, and splashscreen_ja.png. This will save 118KB

Check for pthreadGC2.dll, ssleay32.dll and libeay32.dll. These files are most likely in the System directories as well and can be renamed, then deleted if the program works correctly. This saves about 1.48MB

Since most anyone who downloads from GOATD, the Microsoft.Visual C++ version 9 Runtimes should be installed to the system directory. If so, rename, run the program, verify it works, then delete Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest, msvcm90.dll, msvcp90.dll, and msvcr90.dll from the Tipard directory. This will save 1.38MB of space.

Navigate to the imageformats folder and delete these as well. Another 1.38 MB space freed up. Go to the sqldrivers directory and delete them here as well.

Go to the language folder and delete de.rcc, fr.rcc, and ja.rcc

Here's the kicker, if this completely works, do the same with all Tipard programs and for that matter, any folder named imageformats and sqldrivers and do the same thing.

There's possible savings here of 500,000 KB

Now would be a good time to defragment the hard drive.

More fun, search for .rcc files and copy these files to the Skin directory and you will have more skinning options. As not all .rcc files are skins, make sure the directory you copy them from is in a skins folder.

Not all will work, try one at a time.

Enjoy space saving and a new interface style.
