I installed Giveaway of the Day - HD Video Converter Factory Pro 6.3
yesterday and had it working without problem. But when I tried to start up the program today, I get an error message "Access violation at address 006C7CAE in module 'HD Video Converter Factory.exe'. Write of address 0000000C." And then a popup indicating "Initialization failed, please reinstall! Code=001". The give away period is now over, what should I do to rectify this problem.

You might double check the output format of your camera to make sure the file is the correct type for your conversion process. Another thing to check is your burning program. The fact that the disk can only be viewed on a PC sounds like the session may not have been closed. Look for a setting in the software that says something to the effect of "burn at once" meaning no additional files can be added later.

Another thing you might try is a different / possibly easier program to convert and or burn you file(s). A couple you may want to consider are Format Factory and Flix. Both have been out for a while and do a good job. You should look into your output settings when converting also to make sure it's compatible with the machine you intend to watch the video on. A sanity check you can perform before mailing the disk is see if you can watch it on your DVD player, not your PC. If so it should work on other players. Hope this helps.

How can you call this fast? Converting a 30 sec M2TS clip from 1920*1080 to 1280*720 AVI using XviD codec takes about three minutes. That's about 6 times longer than the actual duration of the clip. Isn't that more than average?

Can someone help me out with an answer to what is probably too simple and basic for this forum? I have downloaded and tried to use multiple conversion programs (and wasted far too many blank DVDs) in attempting to copy DVDs of my children's school performances from one DVD (recorded from a video camera) that plays on a plain old DVD player on a TV.

When I copy the DVDs to send to grandma, she can only play them on her computer. If I put multiple performances on one DVD, grandma can't find all the programs on the DVD.

I would like to be able to make a DVD with a table on contents that grandma can select each performance individually and click play from her couch.

Any suggestions on what I should be using?

I compared this giveaway WonderFox HD Video Converter to WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe using a 23 min 210 MB mkv video file with output as a windows video file. Output video quality was the same for both. The WonderFox converter took 1 hour and produced a 434 MB file and the WinX converter took 10 minutes but produced a 1.24 GB file. Using win 8 quad core computer.

All in all, not a bad product, but not that good to make it stand out of the crowd.

1. Default save paths ("Download_Video", "MergeVideo", "OutputPicture", "OutputVideo") are located in "C:\program files\<installation folder>", which is a definitive no-no. Developers don't know that already? Two thumbs down. Fortunately, the software remembers the last folder used ---but it's not an excuse.

2. "Smart fit" is not exactly the same as "same as input" (dixit xp man). I converted a youtube MP4 file to AVI using "smart fit" everywhere. Converted file size is 53 Mb, original size is 28 Mb. Actually, bitrate has changed from 688 to 1377. Of course, the video is not better ---how could it be? So, the software is not enough dumb as any other dumb video converter, because you cannot just convert from a format to another. You'll have to get info (from mediainfo, e.g.) beforehand, which is a big lost of time.

3. Then I tried to convert to FLV. Unfortunately, there's no "smart fit" option. No AAC audio, just MP3. In order to get the needed options, you'll have to edit format.dat (this deserves a thumb down too, and a thumb up to make this not hard coded in the program, so call it even, lol). After doing so, the converted file has a correct size (27 Mb), and correct data (bitrate, fps, audio codec, etc.). It took almost 5 mn to do the conversion of a 5 mn video (lol), but at least, I hadn't to modify the default settings (all being "smart fit"). Seems when I did the first conversion (see the point #2 above) I missed something (and it was before I modified format.dat).

Remark. I could do this because I'm on XP. For the average Vista+ user, modifying the file is most certainly impossible because they don't have enough rights to fiddle into "C:\Programs".

4. To convert to another format, you'll have to remove the file!! Otherwise you'll get this message (typos not mine ;): "Please select at least ONE file to Run process! (Finished task can not be converted agian.)". First time I saw this I was speechless. The next second, I laugh out loud---really.

5. The editing function is very disappointing as you can't select frame by frame. Tooltip says "next frame" or "previous frame" but in fact, it winds/rewinds by the second. The documentation on the web site states "next bitrate frame", which confirms the limitation ---and render the function useless, because since when a scene starts/ends at the beginning/end of a second? Come on developers, use your brain from time to time.

6. I failed to find the picture snapshot feature. Where is it?

7. Batch. Well, you'll discover that batch processing is very, very, very limited... to 10 items at most, and even to 2 in some case. This deserves a big LOL (I'm running out of thumbs on my hands...)

8. There are other misconceptions. For instance, you can't enter values in fields. You want to normalize the audio volume to 95%? Well, you can't. I'll stop here, but there's many more negative points with the GUI.

On the good side, installation seems to be very clean.

Then, there is this annoying and misleading marketing literature:
- Converting from SD to HD will never better the quality because of missing pixels and missing frames. "SD to HD" will never exist. (Note that true HD is 50 or 60 fps, to be compared to 25-30 fps for standard video.)
- Speed depends heavily on the hardware. There's nothing new in taking advantage of GPU acceleration. A "Unique encode technology"???

See, I totally understand what #27 is saying. What's it going to add to make the quality better? There are 3 basic options, your original is crap, nice or excellent. I can't imagine any program that would do anything but make the file bigger rather than improve it. Even if you take an excellent quality version, convert it to something smaller for storage then try to put it back to it's original size it's not going to be any "better" than what you shrunk it to, just larger.

When I tried to download a video, it only gave me 2 “no audio” and 1 “audio only” option. Why no video and audio? What am I not doing?

@19 docdaddy, the reason for the speed is that it's just rewrapping the audio video into another container. The codecs used the same used in flv and mp4.

I always enjoy your write-ups regarding video and today was no exception, the point regarding x264 intrigued so I endeavoured to find a program that used this codec.

Visually not appealing and to be honest the interface takes a bit of getting used to but it performed well on test regarding quality. Having said that it absolutely hammered my CPU setting all four cores aglow, it was also a very slow but video buffs may enjoy experimenting with it.

Here's what you need to know about video conversion...

Yes, you can convert standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD), but it WILL NOT be high quality! It will be converted to an HD stream -- meaning playback devices will treat it as though it's an HD file. But don't be fooled! It ain't no HD!

Think of it this way for an audio signal: Let's say you want a pristine hi-fi studio-quality vocal recording, but all you have is a telephone to record it -- let's say an old-style desktop telephone -- just for argument's sake. So you have this recording of someone singing into an old telephone, but, hey, it's all good...you have this razzle-dazzle program that'll magically make that recording sound as though it was recorded in a multi-million dollar studio!

Well, sir, the reality is you'll certainly end up with a file that has enough data to make everyone think it'll knock their socks off, but they're gonna tbe sorely disappointed when they go to listen to it! It's still gonna sound like it was recorded on a plain old telephone!

It's not your fault! Hollywood has done a great job in allowing people to think all you have to do is push a few buttons and wiz-bang, ya gotcherself limitless video resolution from original crap video. Ya don't get sumthin' from nuthin'! And even if a program could do that, it would only be an approximation on yer HD output 'cause the converter would hafta guess at the video that just ain't there in SD.

Is there possibility to deinterlace the input? Without this feature it is almost useless for converting videos from the HD camera...

Got it, gave it a test to see if it maintains good quality in format conversion - converted a 1280 x 720 MKV video to AVI at 1024 x 600 resolution, and it did a great job, you'd never be able to tell it was run through a conversion. I will want to see how easily it can make DVD's, apparently that is an option too. It gets my thumbs up!

If you look at the bottom of the program screen, it displays the output path, and provides a button you can push to select a different output path. Pretty much like most video conversion programs these days.

I have version 3 from April 2012...do I need to uninstall this before installing the new version? I really hate to lose this program if for some reason the new one doesn't work on my machine.

Actually I think re-encoding at the same frame size is a bit rare -- you might need to shrink the file size of HD video to fit on a 25 GB BD when backing up one of the Blu-Ray movie discs you bought, but that's really the only example I can come up with this morning. When you want/need to keep the same frame size, if the video won't play for you as is, it's a lot easier & faster to just use another [likely better] player, rather than spend the time & effort just to get lower quality video -- you always will lose some quality re-encoding.

You don't want to transcode [re-encode or convert] video to a larger frame size -- when you're playing video most all hardware will do whatever enlarging for you so the video fills the screen, plus it'll often do a better job of it and you won't lose quality... every re-encode always loses some quality, regardless the software you use.

The bit rate determines the maximum *potential* quality of the video, and it also means what it says -- the bit rate is the amount of data that has to be moved over a network &/or read from whatever storage device, and then be decoded & displayed by the player. If/when the bit rate's too high, the network &/or hardware simply can't handle it -- you couldn't for example put a Blu-Ray movie on a DVD, because the video bit rate exceeds what can be read off a DVD by any player. Another example, many [most?] devices running Android are not capable of processing the amount of data needed to display video at the frame sizes & bit rates commonly found on a Blu-Ray movie disc.

Now the more complicated part... To reduce bit rate you increase the amount of compression applied to the video, meaning you throw away more of the original picture data. Note that as always, once you throw that original data away, it's gone forever -- re-encoding [converting] video to a file with a higher bit rate will just make the file larger, and won't increase the quality one bit. The ultimate goal is to keep as much of that original data, as much of the original picture quality as possible, & to do that you balance both video frame size & bit rate. You want to come as close as you can to the max amount of total data your hardware can handle. Reducing the frame size also reduces the amount of data, so making the video frame smaller lets you apply less video compression, meaning a higher bit rate. But to reduce the frame size you also must throw data away, so that's where the balancing comes in...

As you decrease the bit rate, adding video compression, at some point the quality loss becomes too great & your video looks rather poor. When you're making the video frame smaller, make it too small & you'll find that you've thrown out too much data, and that the picture looks as bad or worse than if you kept the original frame size & added the necessary amount of compression. So you have to perform a bit of a juggling act, running tests on short video clips to see just what combination works best for the hardware you want to use to play your video. It's all about the total amount of data your hardware can handle. A stand-alone Blu-Ray player can manage 1080p with a 40+ bit rate, & so can many PCs/laptops, but many tablets & media player boxes cannot. File sizes can matter too -- a bit of quality loss may be worth it to you when the alternative means files that are larger than you can easily manage &/or store.

As far as video converters go, all the conversion methods & software are compromises really -- it's a matter of how much time, effort, learning, & yes, money you want to spend. HD Video Converter Factory Pro is a portable app if you disregard [or get rid of] uninstall entries in the registry. Like most of the converters that have been on GOTD, it uses ffmpeg to decode & re-encode your video -- ffmpeg includes the x264 AVC encoder, which is one of the best AVC encoders in the world, period. But none of these converters allow you to access all of x264's settings, & ffmpeg itself is weak as an mpg2 encoder. Like most all of the video converters on GOTD HD Video Converter Factory Pro can output Xvid video, though I don't know why anyone would want to -- video's moved on, evolved, but Xvid hasn't really, not being lossless enough for editing, nor efficient enough for delivery, i.e. your finished video project.

You can most likely do a better re-size using AviSynth, but that means installing & learning AviSynth, then using compatible software to encode the results. You can get better results using x264 options that HD Video Converter Factory Pro & most other converters won't let you access, but increasing the quality setting for example can increase the time spent encoding tenfold. And if you're converting for a tablet or cell, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

OK, not a shill, no connection to the developers and I've commented on offerings here before. I am always evaluating video converters as I do a lot of videos in which I put together clips from a lot of sources. FLV/flash files aren't always handled well by video editing programs so I routinely convert them to MP4 files.

And wow - none of my converter programs works this fast! I just converted a 500 MB flv file to an mp4 file. Kept the original resolution. It converted the file in seconds! When I did the same for a 92 MB flv file, it converted it to a mp4 file almost instantaneously. I still need to experiment and see how fast it is when I make various changes in the file, such as changing the resolution of the output file, but I am shocked at how fast this is. And the output file plays perfectly.

No not a promoter nor author but at 71 I do have trouble with the list of selections most video converters display.
Sadly my eyes are not what they used to be and the interface of this program makes it so much easier to select the output type.
I have been programming since the late 1970s and enjoy seeing a well produced piece of software, this fits the bill, hence my write-up.

Wonderfox products like wonderfox dvd video converter is one of the best. I tried a lot of converters but wonderfox is much faster compared to other converters that they claim faster. the smartfix is useless to me. I will try this HD Video Converter Factory Pro hoping that i could get more satisfaction than wonderfox dvd video converter edition.

program ran good had no known problems except that I can't tell it where to put my videos at. also if you want to keep this program you must follow these instructions. Go to options,click on update and uncheck update weekly or else you will lose this program.

Thanks a lot for the explanation. The "input file resolution" is more correct in many cases becaust the "original" resolution may mislesadingly refer to the really original resolution of a video/film which may be very different from the resolution of the input file you are trying to convert.

Judging from your comments I guess you are one of the program authors/promoters so I thank you and GAOtD for this giveaway. Just remember it will be good for business if the "output eq input res" option will be mentioned among the main features of this software (and any other video convertion software)

Adding subtitle feature does not work at all even though there's an option for this.

From my experience if you leave the resolution as "Smart Fit” it stays the same as the original.
You can view this when you select a video as input and output details are shown side-by-side where you select your videos.
A strange choice of wording I must admit as "original" would be more appropriate.

I was just recently trying to decide on whether buying this converter or the Xilisoft Converter(Sadly. I bought the Xilisoft converter). This has to be the best Video converter I've ever used, I just converted a 14 minute video in less than 2 minutes. GOTD came through on this one. Thanks a lot:D

Video converters generally appear to be clones of other video converters particularly when it comes to selection of output type.
You are faced with an endless list of devices you have to hunt through to find what you want.
Instead WonderFox have thought of the user's point of view in this area and made as simple and most usable interface for the selection.
In a quick test this morning I found the speed of conversion very good producing an equally good output.
For testing the download function I tried a YouTube video link, it took a couple clicks on the Analyse button to get sorted and then it downloaded without problems.
I like this company's products for there ease-of-use, well-designed interface and speed of conversion,
I will be keeping today's download.

Download was rather slow, even with high speed cable. Comodo alerted on malware during install, however program installed fine after letting Comodo delete the malware, so I'm not sure where the malware originated from, as it wasn't necessary for the program to run after the install - just be aware you might get an alert during install.

Activating was easy as the registration code is included in the read me file, no email necessary to register.

I have several video converting programs, but I installed this one solely based on the claimed features. I'm hoping the product works as claimed, but I don't have time to try it out right now - need to go to bed. So far so good.
