I'm always on the lookout for converters and rippers (as most are I'm sure) and based on Giovanni's recos (and the link to dottech he usually provides) I had been using VideoToVideo.
Imagine my surprise when I realized many of the DVDs I ripped/converted had no voice tracks. I traced it to anything with 5.1 audio as the voice track is on a separate channel. You hear the music and some audio but the majority of voices are missing. The mouths move but no sound come out.
It would almost be funny except I wasted countless hours of time ripping/converting my DVD collection for my son to watch on his tablet. He was so confused by the lack of voices that he was afraid to tell me thinking he did something wrong (he's 5). So I kept ripping/converting never really thinking to check the audio (a mistake I will never make again) only to find literally dozens of them coming out with no voices.
Once realized I ripped/converted the exact same DVDs that had the issue using other programs (Freemake, Video Converter Factory and Handbrake among others) and the voices/audio was fine so it was not a playback issue.
I played around with every setting imagineable on VideoToVideo and can't get it to work. Emailed the developer and never received a response which was disappointing.
I really liked the all-in-one aspect of VideoToVideo and I still will use it for non 5.1 videos but something isn't right if it can't handle fairly common audio.

Emiliano (#11) posted: "One day a wised man said: if something that values big and it is offered for nothing stay away because something is wrong."
Well, in my 40+ years, I have found the opposite to be true more often than not. Sometimes the "Giveaways" and the freebies are THE BEST! If anyone really believed your "wised man," then no one would ever visit GOTD. I've visited GOTD thousands of times over many years and GOTD is one of the best sites on the Internet.
Besides that, my faith is THE best thing I have and it never cost me anything.

I've tried a lot of video converters over the years and still have many installed, but seem to keep going back to the same program, Handbrake, which I tend to have the best luck with. It is easy to use, versatile, fast, and creates output of a good quality to size ratio.

PS - The program installer is only about a 13 MB download.

Any recommendations to convert from DVF audio format (proprietary SONY) to, say, MP3?

Well give me a thumbs down but most important factor for me is QUALITY output and not SPEED!
Giovanni's free "gems" have better output quality than FREEMAKE and Reincubate Video Converter (still didn't try XMEDIA RECODE), even though are a little bit slower.
Thanks to Giovanni I have now a free copy of Wonderfox Video Converter Factory Pro running in my system, which is far superior than both FREEMAKE and this giveaway...so who cares of speed comparison?

Gee, some great posts about this software and others that do the same thing. But I've noticed that a lot of the FREE programs that are being recommended by "respected" sources, it's like walking in a crapware mine field when you run through the install. FREEMAKE for example, geez, no means no, just make sure you do a custom install (BOTH TIMES) it asks. As far as the this program. Most of the full featured programs (video/dvd converters) already do this so I'll pass. And for those who like to use these 'cloud' based converters. Are you insane?

I actually find myself agreeing with #6. When the field is as saturated as this one is, a benchmark test would be nice instead of "are you joking? check out these freebies". While there may be massive amounts of freebies out there, the GAOTD might have one that is faster. This however, is NOT the case today. WinAVI All in one converter, Aiseesoft Total Video Converter, and Wonderfox Video Converter Pro (Thanks Giovanni for that one!) all had quicker conversion times by an average of 9 minutes on each of the 5 HD movies I tried. Reincubate Video Converter was fairly simple to use, enough so that even a child could probably use it rather easily. The converted movies ran great, with good sound. At least I didn't notice any loss of sound or video. Overall I would say this one is ok, not great, but ok.

Any of these do Music CDs? Do they all need codecs or special settings. I'm looking for something that converts AND compresses to small Kbs wavs.
Anything you suggest and Free would be nice. I was using DBpoweramp forever but Lost my free copy now they charge and it's not worth the price. I don't think. Thanks for any replies.

Program gets lots of plus points for being extremely simplistic to use compared to the other programs given away on this particular site. Interface is straight forward and to the point. No clutter of sub screens or nonsense formats that most will not use anyways.

We seem to get a lot of video converters on GAOTD.
If anyone discovered some unique useful feature about reincubate video converter then please let me know.

The reason there are so many video converters in a super saturated field is because these are open source programs. The software developer gets the working source code for free then usually just tweaks the user interface to make it his own product. Then he puts a price on it and tries to market it.
There is good and bad with this approach - it assures there are lots of whatever is open source, and usually because there are lots of it the price is low. But often the quality is not any different than any of the other 30 liike products because the encoded software engine is the same or 95% similar. But every now and then one developer genuinely puts great effort into improving the code and selling it.
So we have cubic explorer for free, but also have xplorer2 and xyplorer competing in the commercial market and genuinely improving the product.
So young programmers get to jump in easily and painlessly into the commercial market with open source software like video converters. Some will genuinely improve the product and make it in the field. Others are in for the quick dollar. And that is why there are supersaturated applications. Darwinian concepts apply - the fittest will survive and evolve.

Yes, it's true...the state of video is constantly evolving, with new devices requiring higher resolutions...but FREE tools also evolve along with new devices.
For instance XMEDIA RECODE, which is FREE, supports much more formats than this GAOTD, enabling you even to modify the bitrate & keyframe interval, with the ability to select the output stream type (audio only, video only, audio and video).
The freeware TENCODER is even able to hard-code subtitles with the same name as the video file into the final output, something that this GAOTD cannot do.
I think that most developers out there only rely on people's ignorance and lazyness....

One day a wised man said: if something that values big and it is offered for nothing stay away because something is wrong. I just installed and froze my desktop windows 7. I created first a point of restore (I do this always before I install a new software) and I had to go back on time to have my computer in a good health as it was before I installed it.

Ran the same conversion using five different converters including Giovanni's two first choices (but then he does think there's 5 words in Giveaway Of The Day).
Video output quality was similar on all five, though TEncoder didn't create any audio.
Conversion times were as follows:
Reincubate: 25 minutes
Portable XMedia Recode: 33 minutes
Portable Video to Video Converter: 31 minutes
TEncoder: 24 minutes (but no audio)
Freemake Video Converter: 17 minutes
Giovanni's first first choice, Portable XMedia Recode, was the slowest of the five and in my opinion its interface is badly designed. In addition, it didn't save the output where I'd specified and I had to search for it.
Giovanni's second first choice, Portable Video to Video Converter, was second slowest and has been my preferred choice. Easy to use.
I don't like the interface of TEncoder therefore I can't be bothered investigating why it didn't create any audio. For some reason it also created a sub-folder I hadn't asked for.
Reincubate I found easy to use and reasonably fast though not as fast as Freemake.
Freemake was the fastest of the five and I wish I could remember why I stopped using it in favour of Video to Video Converter (probably when I developed a preference for portable software).
That's my two pence worth (without all the zeros)

Very good program today: video converter + (basic) video editor + DVD Authoring Program + burning software.
Supports multiple video format (AVI to DVD, MP4 to DVD, WMV to DVD, MKV to DVD, RM to DVD, etc…) and audio format out there (MP3 to DVD, WAV to DVD, WMA to DVD, AAC to DVD, M4A to DVD, etc….) to DVD creation simultaneously, with the ability to create ISO images from DVD as well.
As video editor it can set video brightness and contrast, trim video duration, crop video size and apply both text & image watermarks with ease.
My final verdict ==> This GAOTD deserves a THUMBS UP, despite its basic (at least for me) Video Editing features, not to mention that its price is just for once pretty much reasonable.

@Giovanni (and all who may be interested:
One possible explanation for the continuing plethora of video converters may be that the state of video is constantly evolving, with new devices requiring higher resolutions, and occasionally new file formats to play properly on those devices. (I confess this is sheer speculation on my part.)
I do agree with you that there are far too many video converters out there, and as one other commenter pointed out, benchmarking to see if a converter will do what YOU want it to do is the best way to weed out the chaff. After all, if a product does what YOU want it to do, then extra bells and whistles aren't just a waste, they're a distraction! (Read: "Information overload."
One often-overlooked principle of marketing is that people buy what they WANT, sometimes even to the extent that they forsake buying what they actually NEED. The negative image most people hold of the "sales" process is most often the result of people being talked into buying something they really DIDN'T want, but were persuaded by a clever-talking "salesman" (or -woman) that what they offered was what they NEEDED. In the case of software, this often results in the end-user either ending up with something that doesn't do what they wanted it to do, or it's so over-complicated that they give up on it (and sometimes foolish pride even prevents them from asking for a refund - which I admit is quite rare in the world of software since once it's installed there's no way for the developer to be 100% assured that the end-user won't continue using the product after the refund is processed.)
Since competition is obviously so intense in this market niche, any input from end-users that may lead to a competitive advantage should be welcomed by developers, which is one reason they offer their product here. (I won't go any further on that theme, since I'm sure you're well aware of the reasoning and rationale behind that particular characteristic of GOTD).

No, I didn't compare conversion speed and quality but the FREE ALTERNATIVES I mentioned in my comment are very fast at converting both video and audio files and their final output quality is outstanding (Xmedia Recode lets you choose to pick even the iPhone model).
Since they are FREE forever I can't see any reason to make such a comparison, taking into account that this tool, as every other GAOTD, cannot be updated for FREE!
Wonderfox VIDEO CONVERTER FACTORY PRO (see my promo link above) is one of the fastest one in the market....so why bother of this ordinary GAOTD if you can get it for FREE till 26/10? Grab it and enjoy it!
Another excellent FREE tool with very high speed conversion is also this (supports NVIDIA CUDA, which is 5X faster in conversion time, multi-core CPU, multi-threading and batch process):

As for your second question, try this FREE Italian GEM (requires
Quad/Six Core Intel Core i5 or Intel Corei7 and at least 6GB of RAM though)

Otherwise give this free tool a try:

Giovanni,
Did you get a chance to compare conversion speed and quality of this GAOTD? Benchmarking is something I think is needed in these cases where the market is saturated.
As a side note, I need to edit some two camera footage, what's a lossless way to assemble the A:B videos while matching audio from the each camera? MPEG Streamclip can assemble them but I need the voice to match on each angle.

GOSH!!!!!
Another ordinary and in my view pretty much useless video converter...
Since the market is nowadays overwhelmed by both video and audio converters, it would be nice to specify in the blurb what makes a video converter like this GAOTD worthy to be bought or downloaded for FREE as GAOTD with the update limitation, when compared to FREE alternatives.
Honestly I can't figure out why there are so many developers out there who still focus their attention on products belonging to a SUPERSATURATED field like this: how can they make profit with ordinary video converters like this GAOTD with so many great FREE and PORTABLE ALTERNATIVES on the market? Maybe they can make it because many people out there are not aware of them? Who knows...

I guess it can be argued that people keep making new models of cars even though there are plenty of existing models. So maybe the same applies to video converters but I doubt it. By now everyone already has at least one video converter. There are many converters free that are portable that can be easily found. I see no need to make more converters unless it contains something that really stands out. Thank you for this offer. Your efforts are appreciated.
