@Bill Davis (#37):

I've been successfully using AOMEI Backupper (free) for almost a year and have had need to use it to restore my entire PC three times (due to defective hard drives) using it. It has worked flawlessly for me. NOTE: Make sure you choose the "System" backup feature, not the "Disk" backup feature, for the System disk (C drive) or the system won't reboot after a restore.

Does this or another DVD copy program reduce the size to DVD5? Do they copy scratched disks?

Thanks,

One issue about rippers often overlooked is the ability to handle damaged disks. I had some movie DVDs which some thoughtful soul had decided were frisbies, so that they became unplayable. So I put them through every ripper that I could find to try to rescue them. Now, this was quite a while ago - at least three or four years ago - but I could find only one program to do the job - Joboshare.com (NOT a freebie). It was incredibly slow - the movie with the worst scratches took over a day to rescue - but it DID fix it.

Has anyone had more recent experiences of this?

Hi baruch. All ripper and converter programs come with a huge variety of bells and whistles, which often blur the distinction between the two types of programs. However, stripping away all the 'extras', what we are left with is:

* A 'ripper' reads a CD (usually music) or DVD (usually movie), and extracts ('rips') the files it contains to your computer's hard disk. That's it in a nutshell.

* By contrast, a 'converter' takes the files that have been placed on your hard disk, and 'converts' them to some other format - for example, from the 'native' format that plays on your DVD player to a format suitable for loading to Youtube, or for playing on a mobile phone.

Read (#1) Ashraf's excellent articles at dottech.org for a detailed account of the types of bells and whistles added, and how they muddle up the two types so much that some programs become both rippers and converters.

Downloaded, installed and tried Aiseesoft Ripper on a short chapter without a hitch. Good program. The free alternatives today from our old friend Giovanni need a few cautions though.
#1) The first recommendation, "Iso Master" from bdlot has had its link down all day. The second site Giovanni listed for "Iso Master" downloaded many junk ware programs after I clicked off all that a custom install gave me a chance to click off. It had problems installing, so I didn't even get the program. A system check after the failed install found several junk programs that I had clicked off installed anyway, and several installed not mentioned in the installation authorization screens at all. Second time and the last with Softpedia for me. A Google search for "DVD Iso Master" found several sites that just defaulted back to the bslot nonworking site. Finally found it on MajorGeeks when I used one of their mirrors, not the first choice in their list; which also did not work.
#2) Giovanni's second recommendation, DVDAux worked (a little slow but worked). A quick test showed that they all worked well, as did the give away today. I did not have any Disney DVDs to try.

#3) One more thought. DVDFab HD decryter only works when using one of their rippers/converters and those are set for 30 day "trial and buy". I tried the decrypter months ago and it used the DVD ripper that downloads with it. Now the ripper is out of the trial period and I can not use it without pay. So download and use at once if you are going to try it. Good software, but not really free. Just a free add on that uses pay software to work.
#4) Giveaway of the Day, Giovanni, and Ashraf (and today, Aiseesoft). A great way to start any day.

I installed it. Tried to load up any of several previously ripped ISO files from my DVDs, but it seems unable to open an ISO. Wants a DVD "folder" and will not pick or let me pick an ISO from the folder that it is in. I'm rather disappointed, as this seems like an obvious feature that should be available to me. Gives me low expectations for the rest of the program.

I have used Aiseesoft, for the most part, it is good, but I must admit that I am a FREEBIE JUNKIE and because of that, I believe Giovanni is correct. There are freewares out there that do the same thing and more, all in 1 program.

But, Aiseesoft does produce some good software!

#8: "I’ve got some problems comparing what different Aiseesoft products can do or can’t. Same for similar companies. As far as I can see Aiseesoft DVD Ripper Platinum can’t process tv recordings which are ts mpeg2 and DVD are ps mpeg2 (VOB files can be renamed to mpg and read by any program able to read mpg). By the way as output file you may choose VOB. Can anybody tell me about it’s usage without menus?"

Like similar competition, rippers nowadays are basically converters that'll accept DVD &/or Blu-Ray as input. Generally most all of the converters/rippers on GOTD use ffmpeg -- many also use QT coding which may speed up stuff like frame re-sizing, e.g. in the Aiseesoft program folder you'll see file names starting with QT. Best results are usually achieved using the x264 AVC encoder that's built-in to ffmpeg. With the goal of making the GUI easy most use profiles [which aren't as needed as they used to be BTW], rather than exposing you to the full range of x264 encoder settings... because of that one app may be set to encode AVC with higher quality but slower speed than another [though they won't likely vary too much], you *may* get better results using software that gives you more control, & you can always use the CLI x264 itself,

RE: TV recordings... lots & lots of variables just about guaranteeing some confusion. *Most* of the time *most* converters will use whatever you have. If/when you get something a little wierd something like Project X can often bring it into spec -- there are several, similar apps that can in a nutshell re-write your original content in a new container file without re-encoding. Aiseesoft's DVD rippers though won't let you select anything but DVDs for input -- if you don't have one of their converters handy, it's more work but you can demux mpg2 video [split it into separate audio/video tracks], then feed those into the free version of Muxman, creating your DVD layout on hdd that Aiseesoft rippers will accept.

Unfortunately your statement about VOB files is incorrect... if renaming works for you, Cool, but depending on your software, importing VOB files won't always work, no matter how they're named. Video DVDs use IFO files, which simplified hold the directions for the player, while the specially formatted VOB files hold audio, video, & subs. IMHO there's little reason to ever output VOB files from a ripper/converter -- let your DVD authoring app handle that. To work with video in VOB files I prefer to use the free PgcDemux to get the separate component files, because that way you can have more flexibility & increased quality with the audio. If that's less important, some apps will work with VOB files as-is, or you can use software like the free DVDVob2Mpg.

Baruch, I'll try to help you here. A Ripper is what you need to make a copy of a DVD for your own use. You Rip a Copy. Think of it being a XEROX machine. You end up with a copy. The copy may even have Copy protection software in it. If the claim says that it removes Copy Protection then that's what it does at the same time. Copy Protection Schemes are used so that people cannot rent a Movie from BlockBuster or Netflix, take it home and copy it onto a blank DVD to give to others to watch later. Of course, these schemes are easily handled by software programmers.

A 'Converter' piece of software converts the 'format' of the Data (file) so it can be used on equipment like an iPad, cell Phone, tablet, or whatever you need to use to make it visible to watch. That's the AVI, MP3, VOB, and MP4 you see claimed as 'formats' it can convert into.

Think of a converter as a cook who can change raw potatoes into mashed potatoes, or French Fries, whatever format you need.

Hope this helps you and others who may be new to GAOTD.

When I had a similar problem I was able to resolve it in my browser options.
On the other hand you could download a program called Orbit which I found very useful in particular its resume function.

.Although I agree possibly would be better if the window was resizeable to state that it is poor programming will only confuse the less experienced computer users.
It is impossible to make this statement unless you have the source code and know the language it is written in, an EXE does not contain this only the compiled code.
My favourite language makes it extremely difficult to allow the programs window to be resizeable, in fact I have spent the last week just trying to make the page tab a different colour, something you would think is trivial.

If Microsoft had written it they would tell you it is a feature. :-)

Missing the most basic and essential feature

Does not truly backup a DVD for use in a common DVD player because it cannot store the output as DVD folder or ISO.

I try to only play backups so as to preserve the original disk from scratches and other hazards. I convert a DVD into another format maybe twice a year. I do not understand how a company misses the target so much. It is like building a car and forgetting to put the tires and wheels on it.

With all due respect to all DVD rippers in the world, why do one needs a DVD ripper when the following can be done, I myself did it:
.insert the DVD into your drive.
.don't play it, insted use "explore" in the context magic to view its contects.
.open the folder "video_ts" and you will find the movie (sometimes divided into 2 or three smaller files) use the very simple "copy to folder..." or "copy this file to computer" to copy it to your computer anywhere you want.
.the format of the movie is usually either .vob or .dat, a format that many players, e.g. GOM player, can play.
.and here is the big one, if your player refused to play the movie, change the file extension to .mpg or .avi by simply retyping it and your player will in most cases play it! you even don't have to use a video converter to watch the movie.
.if the above failed convert the video using avideo converter to any format your player can deal with.
And that's all falks.

Just paid for this two days ago, with discount coupon on their website. Backed up (or correct word, re-encoded) dvd movies already. Except for a few issues software worked flawlessly. I trialed a few competitors after doing a web search for best before deciding on this one. I would buy it again, tho developer needs to make some changes. All my backups look dark when played on my tv (a recent LG model) or in VLC - as if shot at night or low light. Even daylight scenes lack detail. I backed up the same movie several times to find a best setting or what they call Profile. Backups take about half the time of movie length, thus a two hour movie took one hour to re-encode to an mp4 with modest settings such as mpeg4, 720x480, 25 fps, 1200 kbps video bitrate, 128 audio bitrate, and auto on ratio (tho had options 4:3 and 16:9). Backing up to a small cellphone size window took about 20 minutes. I noticed that when I tried H.264 codec, re-encoding took twice as long. Audio on a dozen settings I tried offered one choice: aac, no mp3. I made samples for ipad, ipod, android phone and tablet, generic dvd, and others. My new LG tv has playback problems with aac, and prefers mp3, which plays extremely loud or barely audible; tho movie produced video with no audio. After a dozen failures, Aieesoft Platinum allows me to stop process at any time to view how final mp4 will look - so I now make 5 minute previews, then readjust settings, and repeat till I get close to what I can tolerate. Software offers many usual output options like avi, etc., and let me "crop" pane, except dragging one side causes all sides to readjust, and let me add text comment (tho it shows during entire movie). It seems selecting one profile output, even modified for one movie, won't do for next dvd, and I have to make previews of every dvd backup to check how it will look played on my tv. One complaint - stop requiring a credit card.

I second Giovanni’s observation about strange voting outcomes whenever Aissesoft or their multiple incarnations are involved in the giveaway events.

As usual and as I expect from Aiseesoft and from GAOTD, I get another peice of art.
Trouble is, why is it that my download speed drops always drops to 23-46 KB/second every time I download the giveaway file when it usually reches up to 200 KB/second when I download any file from other websites?
And why is it that downloads from "Giveaway of the day" are always through the in-built Windows downloader which is resume-unsupported, that is, whenever connection is lost every thing is gone and I have to download the whole file again and again?
This issue may not be related to today's giveaway in particular but I have to mention it here because the file is somewhat large.

#9 I want to contradict! Some more indication that Giovanni's proxy remark could be correct:
I can't understand how good ol' Ashraf with his valuable comments - including his above one - and deep tests on dottech.com not to be found elsewhere can be voted down to -18 at this moment in spite of a lot of people giving him positive votings as usual - including me. And as "-18" is the difference of positive and negative votings there must be lots of negative voters.

Question to GOTD: How many counts equal one voting point? 10? 20? Or 100? Thanks in advance and thanks for good giveaways, but not for Themida wrapper, it's a nuisance!!!!

interesting that Giovani immediately accuses of proxies for a good rating. Hmmm. Love speculation without proof! Sure, accuse Aiseesoft of malicious behavior without proof. That's always mature and cool.

I gave them a thumbs up earlier without comment because I already have several software from them and love it, and grabbed this too soon as it was out. They are almost always a thumbs up from me. This is easier to use and lets me rip my dvds and convert easily to my ipod.

This company does have good programs and I get most of them and they have all worked. How ever what I don't like is that after you download this program ( Giveaway of the Day - Aiseesoft DVD Ripper Platinum 7.1.8 ) and install it it then says you have to down load another file to make it work, Why can't ALL of the files be in ONE download? So I UN-installed it because of that reason.

72% THUMBS UP in a blink of an eye...OLE'!!

Proxies proxies + proxies + proxies ==> 72% THUMBS UP!!

Better features is it's ability given to users to full control their output settings (bitrate, resolution, codec etc...) when batch processing

BIG CONS: It cannot store the output as DVD folder or ISO...and, as far as I'm concerned, this is a very important feature any good DVD ripper should not miss, since most of the time a DVD ripper is used to backup a DVD.

Besides that it cannot bypass the "Disney X protection", a task which can be done even using some freeware (see below for more details).

So in my view this GAOTD is a good DVD ripper but not a great one (for sure it's worth much less than 72% THUMBS UP, let's say 50% THUMBS UP!!!).

THUMBS DOWN from me for the very bad "policy" followed by this company aimed at cheating GAOTD users by giving a ridiculous amount of THUMBS UP whenever a Aiseesoft GAOTD is released here, probably by using several different proxies.

BETTER FREE ALTERNATIVES

* BDlot DVD ISO Master
Unlike this GAOTD this terrific FREE utility helps you backup ANY protected DVD to a cross-platform ISO image 1:1 copy, compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, and Unix, without any remarkable video or audio quality loss.
Then, once you have created the ISO IMAGE, you can easily burn it to a DVD/CD/Blu-ray disc at high speed, or play it by the majority of media players out there (PotPlayer, VLC, Mplayer, DAPlayer etc...), or better yet watch it on a virtual disk drive after mounting the image over it using a FREE DVD ISO mounter like "Gizmo Drive".
This is one of the few FREE tools out there able to unlock DVD region codes and defeat ALL those bloody copy protection and well-known damn restrictions which make a DVD copy pretty much impossible, such as CSS, CPRM, CPPM, APS, UOPs, ARccOS, Rip-Guard, and, unlike this GAOTD, Disney X protection.
And with this magic FREE tool you can forget quality loss due to burning errors once and for all, since it also sports an unique "Error Proofing Technology" designed to ensure the integrity and sequence of DVD data after burning.

http://www.bdlot.com/dvd-iso-master
http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Images-Utils/BDlot-DVD-ISO-Master.shtml

* DVDAux
Cool brand new FREE DVD ripper and copier, which can flawlessly rip DVD contents to various video formats at high speed (supports both NVIDIA CUDA and Intel Quick Sync acceleration technologies) and with a great final quality output.
Unlike this GAOTD, it can copy a DVD not only to a blank DVD Disc but also to an ISO file and DVD Folder without any hassle, with the ability to clip the videos, set video and audio bitrate, resolution, frame rate and aspect ratio, as well as change the output audio tracks and subtitles with ease.

Thanks to its constantly updated technology, it's also able to decrypt and remove even the latest DVD copy protections, including CSS encryption, region code, Sony ARccOS, UOPs, APS, RCE, Disney and much more.

* DVDFab HD Decrypter

The above link http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-ripper.html points to
Aiseesoft DVD Ripper without Platinum, which simply seems to enrich with 2D to 3D conversion. Quality is not comparable to original 3D videos taken with two cams or even better a real 3D cam with two lens systems separated as human eyes are.

I've got some problems comparing what different Aiseesoft products can do or can't. Same for similar companies. As far as I can see Aiseesoft DVD Ripper Platinum can't process tv recordings which are ts mpeg2 and DVD are ps mpeg2 (VOB files can be renamed to mpg and read by any program able to read mpg). By the way as output file you may choose VOB. Can anybody tell me about it's usage without menus?

And we can see a lot of HD Video output formats a DVD hasn't got the quality for! This simply means upscaling for portable devices mostly with less resolution and thus filling our storage media!

I have been using this software for many months and I have been completely satisfied with it. The UI is very friendly and you can choose what you will rip. The process is quite quick and your computer doesn’t slow down in any dramatic way.

Here you can see one of the ripped videos from a dvd by Peter Weatherall. I went for lower resolution and smaller file size. http://www.aj3000.org/demo/demo.html
The result is still great and the sound brilliant.

Go for it.
