First off I'd like to say I don't have the amount of time others here obviously do to make an in-depth opinion on software they haven't even tried out!
I used to have a friend who would complain about the wind being too windy, but whatever!

Now for the soft, it is fairly basic at what it does, but that's what they seem to be going for.Now $5.99 is cheaper than $14.99 so I have to agree there. If you need/want software such as this and you have money then maybe $9 isn't that big of a deal to you as it may be to some.

Ashampoo's spam policy, maybe.
I have read all the post about how Ashmpoo does and doesn't spam. There is an interesting pattern. I am one of the ones who says that Ashampoo has shamelessly filled my inbox with up to 20 emails a month. Some say they get about 4. The pattern is this, those who say they get about 4 or so a month have several bought programs from Ashampoo. Those of us who are feed up with the number of unwanted "offers" don't have a long relationship (or need for one) with Ashampoo. I handle the flow of spam from them by constantly marking them as "spam" until my email provider finally starts pulling them from my inbox. About once a month I look through my spam boxes to see if there is anything I want to read.
The giveaway for today looks pretty advance compared to the free programs I have. It will take me too long to figure out and use this software in time to say much useful beyond that. I am sure those who say Ashampoo does not load up their inbox are telling the truth, but so are we who say they do.

Comment for Maureen No.23,If you are going to set up a website with free stuff or otherwise some quality control needs to be established, check the products you offer first and then deem them worthy for your site.Otherwise shut the crappy site down.If the site does not care about quality they are lost.People deserve quality at the very least.

Well, Again A bunch of Complainers! If you have nothing to say other then Negative unfounded BS? Don't say anything at all! I look through the Revues for just that Revues! Yet today I fail to see hardly ANYTHING with respect to the FREE Offering from Ashampoo today! Of Ashampoo Video Styler 2013? Whatz Up With That?
I downloaded and installed on Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with an AMD Bulldozer 6 core CPU @ 3.4GHZ 16GB RAM and all the other stuff in a fun PC, With NO Problems! I installed and registered in a few seconds and got anther copy of ALL Serial Numbers of the Ashampoo programs that I have received ether Free from GOTD or that I have perchesed over the Last 3 years. It runs fast came up and gave me a ton of options or where to save files and where to load from on all my Drives and seems to work quite well for what it is. Its handy and fast for a quick edit or short movie for use on any number of things U2, U Tube etc. It does everything it says it will do and does it very well!
Con: I agree with those above the DID give a revue of today's offering (For FREE!) That it fell short when it comes to NOT being able to use .MP4 Or .FLV Files! I would like to see that ability added but its a small, fast fix, utility and even at the Full Price! of $15.00 Dollars! I know it is NOT going to be a Full Feature Utility and that's understandable! "You get what you pay For!" But other then that it works great and does all the things it does do Very Well!
Miss understanding of Spam Mail: First of all I Give Ashampoo "Permission" to send me information! (That I can stop or suspend at ANY TIME) and it Does STOP! I tried it for a month and got Nothing! turned it back ON! and I get at Most 4 Emails a MONTH! and they are advertizing NEW products and sales and even giveaways on Products I have already but did Not opt. to Buy! Useful information and it takes all of a 1/2 second to delete! If I don't want it! After I've read it! So whats the problem? I get far more "Spam Mail" from places and people that I have Never asked for or Dealt with! That Is SPAM!
The result: I may not use Ashampoo Video Styler 2013, all that much but it is a quick handy utility for a fast short movie and/or post on my favorite places or web site. It does not take much space so its not like it uses a lot of real-estate on my HDD! So, I'll leave it and see if I use it enough to keep it and buy the full version, Or just uninstall it if something better is offered like its ability to use the popular .MP4, and .flv files? I hope so? I have about 10 Ashampoo programs that I use on occasion and I am very happy with them all the way around, They are usually a cutting edge software company so I was a little dismayed that they left out the two above mentioned file types in Video Styler 2013? But everything else I have used from Ashampoo has and Is working just fine! I have never had one of there programs "STOP" Working? I don't know what that is all about? But, Oh well? I guess it something for the naysayers to complain about? Who cares? There is a problem with Ashampoo software: once you give a valid email address they keep sending spam, so the software is not really a give away for a day, it is in reality spamware

I see this offering as an 'entry level' editor that permits someone who is just discovering shooting their own video to get used to the concept and workflow. As such it fills a special void in the marketplace.

Video Styler installs and runs quite well. I find it at times quite slow to respond even though I have a fast computer. I am sure that as the product matures some issues like this (and 'missing' features) will be addressed. I agree that this is nothing special, but then it is only in its 1st version.

I would like to pose a question to those who have had more time to try this out... as I was only able to spend about 15 minutes with it:

In the IdeaInformer at the top of this page, two people comment that the audio reproduction is very poor. What do you say to that? Is it really bad, or just not audiophile quality? Have you been able to ascertain what audio codecs are supported, other than (presumably) MP3 ?

Again I ask this because I do not have the resources at hand to test this for myself.

Thank you Ashampoo and GOTD. Maybe in a future release you will be releasing a true video Suite ... a main desktop application along with mobile versions in iOS and Android which can all "talk to eachother".

Given up on Ashampoo products from here, have yet to receive a single product key on any of them, but plenty of advertising from about 8 different people.

I think a red flag for me today was that there is very little detail on the website about exactly what this program does. I couldn't even find out what codecs the program will work with (I found out by practicing with it that it doesn't do .mp4 or .flv files- mentioned earlier, which is a real shame! Those are ubiquitous file formats these days and to be unable to handle them makes this program just about useless.

I have a number of programs from Ashampoo- some are great, some less so, but this program is definitely a light-weight. With so much freeware out there doing similar stuff, I'm not sure why Ashampoo felt the need to enter this program into the fray. It seems they are willing to hurt their reputation for the chance to make a measly few bucks. That's a bad decision for Ashampoo. It may cost more in Public Relations repair than they'll ever earn from this program. As for the spam (which isn't really spam because you gave them an email:) I simply send it all to my junk folder where I can browse it once in a while for a deal I'm interested in. Works for me!

For a free program its okay, but I certainly wouldn't buy the upgrade based on what I've seen. There is a distinct lack of features but having said that everything works well enough. I've played with it and don't really have any complaints but will probably uninstall as I've no use for it.

As for Ashampoo emails, I've opted out many times and couldn't stop them, eventually blacklisted their emails, they don't even get as far as the spam folder ... Problem solved.

Not disagreeing or anything, but this is something lots of people would like or already like to do, transferring their VHS before the tapes become totally unusable. FWIW I've found that for myself anyway the best method is not to use your PC but to buy a DVD Recorder instead. 1) a decent DVD Recorder uses analog filtering to clean up the picture a bit, & there's little or no way to duplicate that digitally [i.e. using your PC]. If curious research wave theory & how it works in the analog video world. And since HDTV is now the norm, DVD Recorders are much cheaper, though a bit harder to find. 2) your VCR probably recorded CC, and some recorders like my Panasonic transfer that to CC in the DVD mpg2 video. Using your PC you can convert it to subs if you want, creating a new DVD layout you can burn, or leave it as CC *If* your DVD player displays them [AFAIK most Blu-Ray players do great with DVDs but won't display CC]. 3) recording a 2 hour movie takes 2 hours -- wouldn't you rather be using your PC then? I had maybe thousands of hours of old programs & movies I'd taped, & soon found that I either made progress recording them but more or less did without my PC, or I used by PC normally & the stack of tapes never seemed to go down. 4) Analog capture hardware is mostly old & obsolete, so driver & Windows problems are more common -- in win7 my ati tuner/capture cards use the latest drivers, from 2009!

What I did was record the tapes to re-writable DVD, then used the free PgcDemux to copy the mpg2 video & AC3 audio to my hard drive. I next either used one of the Womble apps to trim & cut out commercials without re-encoding [keeping the CC BTW], or just skipped over the commercials when I created the new DVD layout that I tested & burned -- a DVD plays a playlist of chapters, so in a nutshell if each commercial is assigned a chapter when it starts & ends, you can remove those chapters from that playlist [you can use an app with that function or use PGCEdit after creating the DVD layout in whatever app]. Optionally, up to version 10, Nero Recode was/is an excellent way to convert those DVDs to Nero Digital [AVC] Very fast, so I've also got something that'll play on my tablet [if the DVD has subs, Recode will include those too, & the Android VLC mobile player can display them].

What you say is simply not true. While I agree that their spamming is annoying, you just have to log in to your Ashampoo account and deactivate the e-mails every time after registering a new product. Like KevinP (#30), I also have many of their products and after deactivation I get no spam AT ALL from them.

IMHO it seems Video Styler is kind of intended for someone who wants to play a bit with video they shot with their cell or tablet & want to put on YouTube. My guess is they're exploring the market a bit for video-related apps, as well as developing a code base that could be expanded, or just woven into one of their other apps like Burning Studio as a new feature in future versions. Otherwise Video Styler is a bit hard to characterize -- based on what it does I think their competition is more on-line services & web sites, or maybe cell/tablet apps rather than stand alone Windows programs.

When it comes to video, In case it helps at all...

There are different levels of video editors, so to help compare apples to apples, oranges to oranges... The most basic are the cutter/joiners, which let you cut or trim portions of a longer video, & join however many clips together into one video file. Often these apps are designed so that for some formats at least, you can join video clips without the time & quality loss of a re-encode, so for example you can record a TV program or movie, cut out the commercials, & join the several clips that result from cutting out the commercials. This level of video app may or may not show you a timeline or storyboard, & when they include some re-encoding capability, may offer some simpler filters as well.

[Timelines vs. Storyboards... A timeline shows you the clip(s) stretched out so you can zoom into a single frame, or zoom out to show all or most of a clip. The main advantage is you can be very precise. Storyboards OTOH can be more efficient, displaying all the clips you've used as thumbnails, with no need to zoom out or find the end of a clip etc.]

I think cutters/joiners are most used to avoid re-encoding when you do something like cut out commercials from a recording -- a lot of the time I think it's easier to rely on a playlist than to use a joiner otherwise. And then there's not as much call for cutting out commercials as there used to be -- lots of home theater apps use something like Comskip [ http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Comskip ] so you never record the commercials to begin with. If you head over to the Videohelp Tools page [ http://www.videohelp.com/tools ] you'll see 5 categories of video editing apps -- browse through those apps & you'll see several basically cutters/joiners for free.

The next step up the ladder you find cut down or limited versions of the Non-Linear Editors [NLEs] used for pro work -- Windows' Movie Maker is an example -- where you can not only cut/join but add transitions where you join clips. People often complain about the cut down or limited part, but it's kinda a fact of life -- if a company can make big bucks selling their full version app, they're not going to give it away or sell it for less -- companies that do sell their full version video software for less [e.g. Corel, Nero etc.] haven't yet achieved the levels of expertise & experience you find at companies like Adobe, Avid, or Sony, so they can't offer more, & their apps are comparable to cut down versions from those companies.

Sadly the Videohelp editors listing doesn't show much in the way of free, more full featured editors, though there are a couple that are new to the scene, VideoPad & VSDC [both listed as Adware], that might work for you -- I hope they stick around as the other few attempts that have been made to write a free NLE have been abandoned, are no longer being updated etc. There's also a free version of Lightworks, but its 1.8/10 rating speaks for itself.

With transitions comes an explosion of FX, some for transitions, some for the entire video -- entry level NLEs often advertise all their FX as a way to get you to buy their software. Move up the ladder a bit further & you get to use more tracks, which is handy for layering audio & makes it easier to see your separate clips since they can be staggered visually. A bit further up & you start to get into layering video tracks as well, along with the ability to move the picture around within the video frame, e.g. picture in a picture. As you start to reach pro levels the focus moves more from editing on the timeline [though you still have & use it] to editing in video preview windows using keyboard shortcuts because it's faster. You'll also start to see the ability to edit lower resolution proxies, where all your edits are repeated on the full resolution master files [sometimes using a server farm] while you're off doing something else, e.g. working on the next project.

Note that as with editing photos or still images, adding FX can be Very cool when you 1st learn you can add them, but the novelty fades away very quickly, to the point that lots of FX are more a sign of inexperience rather than expertise... pay attention watching TV shows &/or movies & you'll see almost all transitions are L Fades or Cuts, where audio & video tracks fade into the next clip, just not at the same time, providing a bit of continuity. Any filtering is usually related to color, either color matching or helping create the desired atmosphere or look [if you ever wondered how they can shoot for example night scenes in Very low light, they don't :) ].

VirtualDub was mentioned -- it's in a class by itself as a linear editor [vs. NLE] optimized for speed, is a bit limited when it comes to encoders [so you might have to create or encode an intermediate video file], & has a large number of plug-ins or filters available, most I think for repairing or improving the video you've recorded. V/Dub is also excellent for re-sizing, & may do a better job of it Much faster than your NLE. AviSynth was also mentioned -- it's a great tool that's more a helper app that's never tried to be a complete solution... you use AviSynth to open a file [often formats that your video app won't handle itself], optionally apply filters [like V/Dub they're mostly designed for repair, re-size, & conversion], and then open the AviSynth script file instead of something like an .avi in your video app. Not every app opens AviSynth .avs files, so it can get complicated -- in 32 bit Windows you can use VFAPI for an .avi proxy, you can open the .avs in V/Dub & encode an intermediate in a format your video app will import, you can sometimes Frame-Serve out of V/Dub into your video app, using V/Dub for the .avi proxy etc. I think AviSynth was more popular among average Windows users back when opening/importing mpg2 was a bit of an oddity, but it's still around, still developed, still useful.

In regards to spam from Ashampoo. After snagging this piece of software, I logged into my "MyAshampoo" account. I have 19 Ashampoo keys for different products. Trust me, if you opt out of their emails, you WILL NOT get spammed by them.

Ashampoo wites good code. As someone mentioned, they're not cutting edge, but they give good software at a good price.

Ashampoo generally has software that is fairly strong for the price (if you buy). However today's giveaway seems like it might be the one weak piece of software they offer. I don't do much editing but when I do I use either Windows Movie Maker 2.1 portable (available for download on CNET) and Wondershare Video Editor pro. That's a unique combo, I know, but with Movie Maker 2.1 I can record from any device with A/V cables directly to my computer. It's a great free way to convert old VHS videos.

for #4 MikeR - Sorry, but I have no idea what your rant is all about. Installs OK on Win7 64b. It is a little slow on startup due to some queuing that is does. But, it is neat, simple and works. Mike, you let some nomenclature thing get you all upset. Ashampoo is a decent company, and I do not believe they are intentionally deceiving you. Prolly some advert guy not talking to the copy writer not talking to the marketer. :)

This program seems to have the ability to add frames for photos. I am wondering if anyone in this forum knows about a good program that has a variety of frame options.

Remains syncronous??????

Essential feature of any good video editor etc. is whether video and sound remain syncronous after manipulation. So many people have been trying this software and commenting it with their expert wisdom.

Poor me would like urgently an answer to this essential question concerning this software. So far only with costly and very complex professional programs I avoided getting undesirably spoiled videos after cutting etc., especially with VBR (variable bit rate).

Haven't tried latest AVIDEMUX (including FLV) yet, but this otherwise very good editor suffered in former versions from this problem, too.

I fully agree with the comment by David. Ashampoo GmbH Co is well known for his deplorable habit of spamming. One of his specialties is also falsely offer outdated software for then entice users to pay for their update...

Some of you on here have way too much time on your hands. If this site and the software offered brings so much stress into your life maybe you should consider bypassing it on a daily basis. Why get your blood pressure up over free offerings? No matter what you may think of some these freebies that are being offered, mostly on a limited basis of a year and no updates, why not try it and if you don't like it do what the rest of today's throw away society does? Uninstall it. I wonder if they have therapy group sessions for angry , hostile, freebie users?

However, that is FACT:

In Germany businesses are allowed to advertise as they see fit.
- Magazine CDs (saying it's a full version / DEMO in the small print on page 108)
- weird upgrade offers in online stores
- selling , reselling, mirror stores to deceive customers

This is common practise in Germany.
Ashampoo is a German company, and they do what the law allows them to do.

For instance, in Germany you don't have free customer advice agencies (you have to toss a lot of money to get told what they do is totally OK).

This offer today is absolutely within the law of Germany, like it or not.

While I have had good experiences with some Ashampoo software, please be aware that you will NEVER, EVER be able to stop the spam you will get once they have your address.

while ashampoo photo software does good job but after seeing this gimmicky name, i am not comfortable to download this, specially after MikeR's analysis. oh well, if Ashraf would put some light on this, we would be double assured (as he normally comments after "testing" the product). but i would not depend on Giovanni's remarks (despite he is a good contributor) since i believe he does not test the products before commenting as many of his "recommended" products are FAIL for me right after installation and testing.

I made the mistake of getting one or 2 of the Ashampoo products, while the product was interesting I immediately started getting bombarded with spam for this deal and that deal, so I clicked the opt out link, nothing, I had to opt out 4 times and then email ashampoo 2x directly, and all but threaten legal action before the spamming at least slowed, and, ( I wait with bated breath), stopped finally, not a good company to do business with

I really wish some of you would stop moaning.

It is a new product; a fun product rather than a serious video manipulation product. Who really cares if it is version 1.0 or 1.01?

If you think that this simple software will do something you have always wanted then there is no harm in trying it, is there?

@4 - MikeR. Of course the software exists. AShampoo Video Styler is listed on their web site and you yourself posted a link to it. When someone says they use 'MS Word' do you shout at them and say it doesn't exist purely because they didn't say 'Microsoft Word', 'Microsoft Word 2010' or 'Microsoft Word v14.0' (all of which can refer to the same version of the product by the way)? I hope you are not that pedantic.

As for your 'upgrade price exposé' you have no idea if the purchased upgrade software looks for an existing registration code in your registry or how it checks to see if a version is already installed. It looks like a different item because it gets listed as 'Ashampoo Video Styler UPGRADE' in your shopping cart and not 'Ashampoo Video Styler'. You might be right, but you are jumping to bizarre conclusions without any proof.

Perhaps you should just not download todays FREE software which COSTS NOTHING and take a moment to breath. Tomorrow is another day and maybe it will bring something more to your liking.

@ Peter, post #13: The point isn't that a software is 'free.' The point isn't that it's being 'given away', either. The point is that it's dishonest -- not dishonest on GAOTD's part, but dishonesty by the developer, and with it the devaluation of GAOTD as a reference resource of integrity to the level of a carnival stall for snake oil salesmen.

If Ashampoo, or any other developer, wants to come on here to publicise snake-oil in clearly labelled bottles, then that's fine with me. I won't waste my time sampling it or buying it. If, however, it's labelling that snake-oil as something quite different, then issues rather deeper than 'free' and 'giveaway' arise.

@ #4 MikeR - So is there any way to help GOTD move beyond offering crippleware and out of date versions (for which positive comments and bug reports are pointless) or programs which don't actually manage to make a decent fist of what they are being sold for (e.g. yesterday's PDF-converter aberration)?

It would be a shame if excellent offerings (such as Sticky Password and all the effort which the Developer put into their giveaway) were to become less rather than more frequent. At present, Ashraf's reviews and Giovanni's suggestions probably have more impact on what is installed and used than the day's giveaway. In the long run, I can't see that that is going to encourage those with decent applications to trial them here.

That said, today's offering does a limited job but does it well, and if you want to turn your home movies into something fun why not test it out, whilst you laugh at Ashampoo for failing to use their product to provide a video of their product. Or perhaps they are going to use the much more powerful 'Premier' version for that. Some day...

I know from the approval numbers that the sentiments of MikeR (4) are popular but I agree with rick (6) people tend to forget that this is a site that offers software for which there is normally a charge to us free.
Sometimes the product is great occasionally terrible but more often its OK if you happen to need something to do a job.
I download about once a month and have some really useful software courtesy of GOTD and manufacturers who want to promote their name or a product enough to give it away.
If I want to be really sure about a product then I research and buy it with my own cash.
Many reviewers seem to expect top quality from freebies- If you want the top quality then you have to pay for it.
This products on offer are free so if you don't like them just do what I do ignore that days offer and see what comes tomorrow.
Ashampoo are a German software company that offer quite a range of products that tend to be reliable and solid but rarely cutting edge but this is referenced in their price.
This product is exactly that in that it is not exciting, not cutting edge but will do a nice job in linking your home movies and its FREE.

I recommend getting VideoPad Video Editor. It is free for non-commercial use, and it has A LOT of everything (quite literally).

Sometimes I wonder whether GAOTD team check out if what is released here is the same software described in the blurb.

@6 (Rick)... no I agree with @4 (Mike R) .. these developers trying to make fools of users need to be outed. Where I disagree with him is that he lets GAOTD off too lightly. They should be checking out things like this BEFORE offering out to the community. Otherwise why should we trust them on other software they are offering (a rhetorical question)?

On the subject of today's software - I have enough video converters to paper the walls with so won't be trying this one in any case.

I like Ashampoo, but this one really doesn't look like is has much too it that you couldn't get from other free tools out there.

I own several of their products, and you'll usually see me here defending their intensive mail ad program - they send a lot of emails, but you are always free to opt out later. Ashampoo offers deep discounts on all their products in those emails...

Serif has a nice Movie Plus starter version in it's collection of free software - it's basically a trial version for the more powerful X5 or X6. The Serif trials are fully functional versions of the more powerful retail versions. You'll need to register on their site, but from there they have several nice free programs.

As for today's giveaway I found it an excellent and very indeed easy to use VIDEO EDITOR to make your videos more professional, by adding on them tons of filters and any kind of background music you want to add it.

So if you are eager to show your videos to your friends/relatives/readers etc... on YouTube or Facebook with no hassle, this is the right tool for you!!

Overall for what it does I give it a THUMBS UP even though the lack of both FLV and MP4 support is undoubtely a big cons!!

@4 so much fuss over something that is FREE and that you don't have to download or upgrade if you don't want to.

Tried to install on my vista PC. Twice it crashed. Deleted. Ashampoo, I am disappointed.

After the recent Audials fiasco, where the developer continued on with its long-established practice of deliberately misrepresenting non-existent software as genuine retail products, it might have been hoped that GAOTDers would be be given some breathing space from this kind of wilful confusion.

But no such luck. Instead, Ashampoo has arrived with its one-day-only free offer of Ashampoo Video Styler 2013. A product which doesn't exist.

In a clumsy attempt at clarification of what it's trying to do here (or justification) Ashampoo states that what it's really offering today is Ashampoo Video Styler 1.0, a statement which immediately begs the question:

Why is this software called one thing in the giveaway title, but then undergoes a change of name in the small print text??

Ashampoo Video Styler 2013, which doesn't exist, is therefore Ashampoo Video Styler 1.0, which may exist. . . except there's no trace of it anywhere, and no evidence on the Ashampoo website or anywhere else that it ever did.

Ashampoo, however, wishes you to know that it retails at $14.99. And therefore, $14.99 will be 'saved' today by GAOTDers. Today, also, that $14.99 "saving" is accompanied by a "special upgrade price" of just $5.99 instead of $14.99 to, er, Ashampoo Video Styler (no version number given.)

On which basis, then. . . Ashampoo Video Styler version 1.0 costs $14.99. Ashampoo Video Styler no-version-given, but presumably Version 1.01 as per the Ashampoo website --

On which basis, therefore, today's $5.99 special upgrade offer must be well worth having -- except, surprise, surprise, that upgrade offer isn't all it seems, either. . .

Simply follow the above link, ignore the full price button, click on the $5.99 'upgrade', and that's it -- you'll be taken immediately to the Ashampoo store, asked for your name and address details, and then taken to the 'Buy' page. . .

And at no stage in that process will you ever once be asked what product you're upgrading from, or asked for proof of ownership of such product.

Personally, I am sick, weary and tired of developers coming on here and treating GAOTDers as if they were idiots.

A deliberate cloak of confusion is being wrapped around today's giveaway by the developer itself -- confusion over name; confusion over version; confusion over price; confusion over 'special upgrade' offer. Behind that cloak, today's "offer" may actually be no more than the trialware / crippleware version of something that actually costs just $5.99, not $14.99. . .

Thanks, GAOTD: it's not your fault that yet another developer has come on here with a seemingly epic contempt for GAOTDers. But it would be sad if anyone here was to fall for today's trickery, and dignify Ashampoo's conduct by actually downloading and installing Video Styler 2013.
