@38:
My mistake? In the formula, "year" is a numeric variable (2012 for instance) stored in a range named "year". It is not the function YEAR(). You didn't notice it, but "year" is lower case instead of upper case, and not followed by a value between parenthesis. For other language than English, you'll have to translate ROUND, DAY and MINUTE, and replace the ";" with a comma or else depending on your configuration.

@42:
The problem is not the format, its the formulas. Errors should not arise in formulas because the software cannot deal with them. In that case, the software should not pretend to be Excel compatible, or give a list of unknown functions like OOo does. That's what I meant.

Regarding file format, I doubt MS will let incompatibilities between Excel versions because they know very well (a) Excel is their main software (b) many people have not upgraded to 2000, 2003, 2007 or 2010. Compatibility is always descendant. This is why they offer for free the MSO compatibility pack for ascendance, so that I can open an XL 2010 file in my XL 2000. Publisher is the only product where you can't open a file saved in a previous version.

Awesome.. A true contender with the Giants!

Tested with a few complex Excel created workbooks and this progie edited / viewed / saved / reopened them all flawlessly. Awesome product.. just be even nicer if they offered the whole suite again.

Openoffice is same as microsfot office as open office was created as opne source before microsfot basically copied it and it is compatiable with microsoft as used it for powerpoint on microsoft in 2005 in my A+ class and it's 100 percent compatiable with microsfot office as most IT classes recommend open office even though most coleges can give away microsfot free to students at least use to i never check comments again asi don't care what anyone thinks i know all this from experience if you are going to complain aobut my post then get a life

@38 papin - three comments :-
1) Many MS spradsheets & etc., Microsoft will not let all companies the rights to use 'their design principle of coding'.
2) At last 30% of 'open file type' (MS proprietiory formating) in
MS word proc's & spredsheets softwre editions / version are only about 60% compatible with older versions ! The normal instane is with 3 yaer different editions (e.g. 2007 / 2010 editon dates), but can be as little as 12 or 24 months different editions.
3) And from my experience, 90% of the time you have to go back to the old softare and save as a univrsal format, then reload and convert in the new version, even then there are often errors!

Apparently there's promotions happening everywhere!

==========

Or FREE http://www.kingsoftstore.co.uk/kingsoft-office-freeware.html

Compare editions:

http://www.kingsoftstore.co.uk/windows/professional-office-difference.html#.T_NTNN8dXjM

==========

http://www.kingsoft.com/ is in Chinese (LOTS to explore and download there!) and shows WPS Office 2012, presumably WPS means [W]ord, [P]resentations, [S]preadsheets -- no one offers Outlook and Access equivalents, eh?

Except Corel with it's Paradox database and free Thunderbird integrated email, $400 http://www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4720109&cid=catalog20038&segid=6600016#tab3

Anyway, explore, but have a backup plan, because I'm so burnt by Kingsoft removing prior editions when we try out new versions -- which is TOTALLY against an INSTALL program's expectations -- that I can't trust them now.

@25 :

Kingsoft spreadsheet does not understand this simple formula: ROUND((DAY(MINUTE(year/38)/2+55)&"/4/"&year)/7;)*7-6. It returns an error (#VALUE!). This is NOT acceptable.

KS spreadsheet professional ignores .XLA. Same goes for references in macro editor. Obviously, you cannot create .xla files.

So far, so good: KS PRO is 90% compatible with MS XL, but I need the missing 10%.

@7, 14, ... :: regarding other office suites :

- SSuite does not know EOMONTH, EDATE and NETWORKDAYS. Does not know macros either. So, it's no competitor to Excel yet. Besides, GUI reminds me Windows 3.1...
- IBM Symphony is based on OpenOffice. Suffers of the very same flaws.
- You can try Software602 if you like, or anything you'll find on the web...

In order for a software to compete with XL 2000/3, it has to offer the very same features. Which means it must open ALL my .xls files without error and, of course, run the macros. To date, there's no competitor in the spreadsheet battle. One day, maybe...

Francis #22:

As I've previously mentioned in earlier Kingsoft giveaways, Kingsoft really tries to integrate itself into Windoows (i.e. right click context menu functions, default class entries, default file handling, default OLE linkages, etc.), doesn't link / save the old entries and doesn't uninstall these integrations. Unfortunately this type of ignorant behaviour is common with a fair number of developers (since Microsoft feels that they are the end all and be all, and they wrote the OS, they are the only ones who could get away with this unfriendly behaviour).

The net result if you are trying different office suites and install them all on the same machine is that a number of the office packages will overwrite many but not all Microsoft Office's entries (I'm assuming you installed M$O first) and the result is you have a trashed, unstable system.

So, if you have Kingsoft & Microsoft Office installed on the same system, you can definitely expect problems. Don't blame Microsoft, it's actually the other programs that have screwed things up. (Believe it or not, Microsoft's Quality Control Job # 1 is to make sure that all Microsoft products work together better than anything else and they really don't care about other "competing" developers working well with their stuff - except for malware & hardware failure issues, you'll never have a problem system if all you ever only use is MS products & autoupdates are enabled.)

If you only have Kingsoft installed, it's not a bad choice as a quite usable package.

If you have Microsoft Office installed, only install other competing programs that are portable.

MS Office 2010, like it or not, is much better than any office type software - but it is not free. If you are not used to Office 2010, you may not like it, but once you have, it is much better software than anything else out there (including cumbersome ms office 2003). Open Office is superior to the other freebies (like the 5th element) or other ms office wannabies. Why bother with just one program like this Kingsoft spreadsheet software when you can just download the whole suite of Open Office at http://www.openoffice.org/. Otherwise you can use windows live or google docs as free online office suites - both are much better than any other free versions like zoho, etc. If you need the best though, go for MS Office 2010.

I already have more spreadsheets than I can use - so the developer decided the only difference between this and M$ is speed? From a marketing perspective, you've got to write a paragraph that is 100% stronger than the limp one you wrote for this day. You need to better differentiate yourself from the competition. Perhaps there is a more-for-less approach for you, or equal features but really, really lower price. Tough market to crack with the ONE big boy out there... good luck.

@12 Never understood why so many bang on about price when its free here. The whole suite has a free version.
@13 download the pro trial version and use 7 zip to get the vba and install. Worked with previous version.
If you want to keep the old version too then install this in to a sandboxie sandbox.
Not sure why anyone would want to open odt file except with open office. Anyone you send it to who isnt an open office fan won't have a clue what it is. Most users will save in microsoft formats for compatiblity.
The ability to switch to from the ribbon in the version i use is a big plus.

Thank you for the offer. I will decline at this time.
As many have stated Microsoft compatibility is a must.
I won't be testing this one.
An entire office suite is worth checking if/when there is an offer.
Until then there are other free options.

Kingsoft has at least given the user a choice between old and new GUI !

#20 Meeh - .ods ? For what reason ?

I use Kingsoft on my smartphone and it work very well. The last thing that I need is Microsoft on my smartphone… I do have MS Office 2003 on my PC for many years, so there is no doubt about my knowledge of comparing todays offer.

Funny thing is.... they say "Kingsoft Spreadsheets is a powerful data analysis tool." but this thing don't even support .ods... (LibreOffice is the second most used Office Suite in this world... only Microsoft Office is more used.)

Well, I'd test it if this suports Libre Office (without exporting as Microsoft files).

There are many office alternatives out there but non that simulate the office 2010 ribbon. That's because lots of us don't like it. I do prefer the backstage view but my older PC can't keep up with the resource hog of Microsoft.

So I stuck with Abiword since it's small and light. OpenOffice won't do since its quite heavy. I've asked the Abiword developers to implement the ribbon at least optionally, but nobody there seems to care about eye candy or marketing junk.

Then I found Kingsoft Writer, which has the best of both worlds: did a fine job with the ribbon, but also starts up much faster then Microsoft. I think its because Kinsoft is not based on Microsoft's .NET nonsence but rather on QT engine stuff.

Formating: The only issue I had was compatibility of formatting: I save a table in .doc format, but when opened with Abiword it's all jumbled up. But its not clear who's the problem Abiword or Kingsoft.

Beware: The free version overwrites the standard version> I got the standard version writer for free on GAOTD a while ago and liked it so seeing this I thought the only one I don't have is the publisher so I decided to take this and install the publisher by installing Kingsoft office free. Well the office free said my writer was an older version and uninstalled it without giving me a chance to intervene. I suppose I should not complain about loosing something I got free but I would like to ask the publisher to give people a chance to stop their free version uninstalling the better version.

Kingsoft Spreadsheet will open native .xlsx files and allow modifications. However, it only saves to .xls format (not a problem really as that gives more compatibility with majority of users - especially those still using MS Excel 2003, on XP for instance).

Problem exists with files created via Wondershare PDF Converter - which only generates .xlsx versions; these always crash my KS Pro edition.
There is no problem with the converted file itself as I have successfully opened and edited them using Open Office.
Tests using MS Excel on another machine also open without any problem - so why this glitch in KS.?

My bug report directly to KS on this remains unanswered..!! :(

For general use (97% of home users), why not. Overall, it's a good product. But you cannot use VBA macros, including .XLA files.

The advantage of Kingsoft products is they function like M$ ones; and you can install only what interests you. The very good: no ribbon if you hate it like I do.

Free alternatives are OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but these have taken paths not really towards lightness, simplicity and efficiency; moreover, they mimic some of the best irritating MS Office flaws, and you must install the whole 300+ MB suite. Then, in those office suites, VBA is useless; aggravating, macro programming is a PITA: no or very poor, if any, documentation; no macro recording.

About the price tag (today's exchange rates: GBP/USD = 1.57). Kingsoft Spreadsheet Professional is £19 or $29.82, when the Standard is £12 or $18.84. Thus, the real give away is $19.95 (psychological price tag).

Or they should have given away the Professional version if they really wanted us to save $29.95. LOL.

to 4 Me - I have to agree with you. Also the only office that comes close to Microsoft is Softmaker Office followed by Livre Office. With Kingsoft Office, why do they split the Office Suite in individual packages? It doesn't nake any sense. The pricing policy seems strange comparing the individual packages. You pay 19 pounds for Writer Pro. That is 57 bucks if you buy the packages individually but only 45 if you buy the full office pro. It's only 9 bucks difference from Standard to Pro version, that makes me think where's the dodge in this? Why not just keep it simple and have only the Pro version for 45 bucks?

Since I already paid for Microsoft Office a long way back, and have used it with macros and user defined toolbar icons, there is no reason to change to another worksheet software.

The formulae that you set in your Excel worksheets may not work EXACTLY the same in Kingsoft. Beware if you use for critical tasks.

Will give this giveaway a miss.

Hello,

in January I heard something about the critical security of this offices suite.

Especially with view to its manufacturer country: China.

Some mourned about a trojan/bot like behavior (which theory is also plausible ... who does not want to use a Microsoft-Like/compatible but cheaper product?) ["collecting information on HDD", etc.

Haha, OK, the information gatehred by MS products (Win, office, etc. ) is not less, too :D

I do not want to critisize the product in any negative way.
But I only want to ask and I am open minded for proofs, of course.

It seems that it installs some drivers and services so that it obviously cannot run without.
And so is not portable (OK, which is no reason against the product)

What experiences have you made concerning about that?

Thanks for the software!
regards !

Anything that is not fully compatible with Microsoft Office (from a small business/Medium business perspective)is just not worth using IMO. Sad but true, As MS Office is the standard worldwide, if you use something else that isn't totally compatible in nearly every way with your client's software then it's totally useless I have found (the hard way). If you just want it for your home computer account then that's fine. Just sayin ;-)

If you don't have Microsoft Office then this is a great aternative for the Spreadsheet part of the office suite. We were given the full version of Kingsoft Office Suite Pro version back in January/February and I've not bothered transferring my copy of Microsoft Office from my old computer simply because apart from a few issues Kingsofts software is nearly as good.

The interface is very similar to Microsofts version as well.
I'll pass on this today though as I still have the Full Office suite from the previous giveaway. :)
