Christopher, thanks for your response about how to add new record.
However, putting delete line next to it by right clicking on it, I may by accident press a wrong line and all the previous entry will be deleted. You still need to put that NewRecord button somewhere in your program.
Second, when the dBase was creates under 3.0.net environment and the created dBase file was exported on a computer without 3.0.net I get errors when opening the dBase, also I get SerialSafeDatabase.xml unscrambled and can read parts of the dBase records on a notepad.

Please explain how using a .Net application is a hindrance when any OS after Vista comes with it automatically installed. XP pushes this as a required update and over thousands of programs use it. .Net as a limitation is simply a complaint by people that lack the knowledge of the package and the advantages that it brings not only to the user but to a developer. Not using .Net and its advantages is like saying that I'm going to drive an old car with no power steering because power steering is useless or a "tool" for the automotive industry... Yes, it may be but it sure is helpful and I bet you drive one that has fuel injection too...

Maybe Robocopy (Microsoft extra tool) will help you?
It can copy directory structures, even if empty, so you can create it once and then copy. I also recommend the free UI called Easy Robocopy (http://www.tribblesoft.com).

Hi #7 from before here.Sorry for my misunderstanding earlier about my windows xp os.
I just wanted to say that i have gotten this software to work by first
1) download the zip
2) un zip to any folder
3) run setup and place files in C drive.
4) run activation file
5) go to C:\serial safe folder and delete the database file.
6) run the exe file.
Runs great!
By first activating it then opening the serial safe folder in my C drive and deleting the database file. It then opened without a hitch.

Nice software, and thanks. :)

I have installed this program exactly as instructed in the readme file. Per your instructions here on GAOTD, I deleted the .sdb file. I then re-started SerialSafe but it does not show any registration information. I searched the registry in regedit and in a subfolder of SerialSafe I did find a key named "license". I don't know much about the registry but I did try and paste that key value into the license box and put giveawayoftheday.com as the email but that didn't work either. Any suggestions on how I get this program to show as registered before the deadline? Thank you in advance and I will keep checking back regularly.

The whole vendor website needs to redone, it is not even clear from the website what this prog is or does, at least include the GAOTD description "
" May 29, 2012SerialSafe is a portable software serial/license manager. The program allows you to store serial numbers, license numbers and license files directly into the programs database. "

Further the website is littered with spelling errors.

I save all reg code and or details into notepad and then into a folder . This folder can then be encrypted with an encryption prog of your choice or left as it is, and then dropped into a portable safe , like steganos safe.

My view is that serial safe is a complete waste of time, as it does not search your computer for software licenses, you have to manually enter details of each one into Serial safe; most people have not the time to do all that, let alone pay for the privilege, you might as well manually create a notepad license details for each one , for free.

To say not all licenses are stored in the same place is a lame excuse. At least if it auto found some , would save you time and trouble.

(Incidentally the free pro Belarac ??? adviser audits your pc and finds license and vendor details )

The prog would be far more marketable if redone as a portable safe , where you could drop anything you wanted to save into it, including license details , but no forms or include an optional template to use.

Every time I have to enter new record, I have to shut down the program and restart again. You can nor enter multiple records in one session.
Waist of time, Christopher where is the button for entering new records to build the data base?

As papin (#62) says, this offering is NOT portable:

Definition of portable:
Adjective: Able to be easily carried or moved.
Noun: A version of something that can be easily carried.
Synonyms: portative - movable - transportable.

For computers this means capable of residing on a removable media and operating on any similar computer.

Portable means NOT REQUIRING:
a) Installed registry keys
b) Being locked to a single computer
c) .NET environment

The .NET environment requirement is just ludicrous. It is a 40 MB waste of time and space (for each version installed). .NET is an MS marketing ploy and a crutch for lack of programming skills.

SerialSafe looks like a sledge hammer in search of a nail when a simple push pin will do nicely.

This software has a number of problems.

1. Storage of both the application and text file together in one place.
2. It's two extra steps, one manually entering info, and the other when the day comes to rebuild the box.

3. Considering everything getting backed up, eventually gets burned to DVD or copied to a portable drive, this software doesn't have the future vision. Where does data come from? Where does it go to?

If the intent is to replace all the off the shelf paid and free or open methods to encrypt, compress, and backup it missed the goal. You could store serial numbers in keepass if you wanted to add (the same) two steps, but I wouldn't bother because most serial numbers are already in TEXT to begin with. Why bother copying it around twice more?

winrar (password) + ztree = spin circles around this workflow
Apocalypso v 1.3 + explorer (if you like that style) = spin circles
PGP(ckt) a 16384 RSA key pair
With AES 256....

Any encryption soft, and any archiver with passwords

You want comments, feedback, so please don't shoot the messenger

MY intent was to give feedback and get right to the meat

Thanks for the giveaway
Thanks for all the giveaways!

Even after runing the activation in admin mode the program doesn't seem to be activated, there's nothing in the license area saying it's activated/licensed.

@Christopher Sonon:

#53 (referring to #48)

Thanks for your comments and corrections to my posting.

I have sent you, as requested, an email with the error message. It appears to me the problem(s) may be caused by the fact that I have .NET 4 (.NET Framework 4.0.30319.1) on my system (Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, SP1), not .NET 3.

You are right about the problems with changed settings being solved by saving before exiting; I did not realize, however, (nor do I consider it very logical) that saving a Settings change by hitting "Save" on the Settings screen is not sufficient; apparently that save must be reconfirmed by File --> Save on the main console.
By thus saving twice I avoid the situation which led to the error message.

I was wrong about not being able to disable encryption of the database file; I did not realize it was a compressed file, because inspection with Notepad only showed me gobbledygook. Thanks for enabling me to have a look at the unzipped XML file!

I really appreciate your attention to the GOTD comments (by others as well as by me).

@58 Doom: Don't worry, I'll help you though, you didn't wreck anything (yet).

The setup.exe you got together with the SerialSafe.sdb file from the setup in the zip-archive are not the same. The first one you got from running setup.exe in the zipfile is the program you'll have to use, but I recommend renaming it because setup.exe is a weird name indeed for that very file. You might rename it to SerialSafe.exe to make clear this is the real program-file.

Second weird thing is that running this newly acquired SerialSafe.exe doesn't do anything at all, just the way you wrote down. It will only appear working after you run activate.exe. Without that you are not registered and SerialSafe.exe will start and drop leaving no trace.
So do use activate.exe and after that do run SerialSafe.exe

To the developer and/or GAotD-team:

1. please rename your program from setup.exe to something usefull like SerialSafe.exe to avoid unclear situations with installation (I know you dont have to install, but the giveaway had to be installed because of the wrapper with the datecheck. This might apply to the GAotD-team, I don't know who chose the name.

2. At least popup a warning about not being able to start because it is not registered yet. Your customers will be much more able to manage your application. This might apply to the GAotD-team too because they did not give the right info in the readme-file:
Quote:

Unzip the package you`ve downloaded and run Setup.exe which is included in the package, to
install the software, then run the activation program Activate.exe [wrong, this should be the otherway around] which is included in the package to register your copy.

To start the program run SerialSafe.exe [How can anyone do that when they don't know your SerialSafe.exe still bears the name setup.exe ] from the installation folder

3. Give away a fully licensed product (GAotD-rules), not one that is (in your words) "Portable limited to one machine only" To me "fully licensed" means licensed the way you sell your product to registered customers. I don't believe you sell portable software limited to one computer only. This is like giving someone an apple but just before giving it away you quickly take a bite.

With due respect, hope this helps.

The GAOTD will update in the future but it is locked to the machine it was originally registered on. The registration key is part of the GAOTD version.

Microsoft is very explicit on this issue: the user MUST download the corresponding .NET version. This behavior is in total contradiction with portability."

Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 all come with .NET 3.0 installed as part of the OS so this is not a hindrance for anyone with a machine with those OS. Windows XP pushes .NET 3.0 with automatic updates, so again no hindrance.

"The author is desperately sticking to his viewpoint: Yeah, my software is portable. Why is he insisting?"

Because the software is portable, the software released with GAOTD is a modified version of the software to work with a registration key. Even this method is still portable provided you export the registry key for use with the software on a different machine.

If you want the fully portable non limited version you may purchase it from our website, otherwise you may choose to use the GAOTD version or simply not use the software.

"A simple test with another computer (without .NET) would have shown how wrong the proof of concept is: Selling the software as a portable application to IT professionals. Wrong two times here at GOTD!"

Since Microsoft has officially stopped support of XP programming to an older operating system does not seem feasible. Again, all newer machines from Vista forward have .NET 3.0 installed as part of the OS.

Seems that this offering has attracted an unusual number of infants in need of parental supervision.

Kvetching about a payware product's protection to ensure that its freebie distribution isn't exceeded? Dude, grow the efup. If you don't like it, take the thumb out of your mouth, stop your tantrums, put on a fresh diaper and waddle away because no one is forcing you to use this for free. Geez, people like that irritate me.

As for the product itself, it seems to work just fine for what it is; albeit a bit of overkill when a spreadsheet is (usually) just a mouse click away. Call me a minimalist, I guess

Thank you Christopher, for explaining the cipher.

AES-256 it is. Why not Blowfish? There has been up today no uccessful cryptanalysis against Blowfish. AES is used that governments can easy crack confidential data and that's why it became standard but not because of security. AES is broken.

Portability : NONE. Here's why:

1. Product requires .NET 3.0. If not installed, then it cannot run. Recent Windows versions ship only with .NET 4.0 framework. Many "developers" use other versions. Microsoft is very explicit on this issue: the user MUST download the corresponding .NET version. This behavior is in total contradiction with portability.

2. As the author said in #10: "The software is portable; however the GAOTD license is locked to a computer. The computer the software is installed on using the GAOTD installer enters a registry key to entitle the user to run it.". He also wrote (#43): "The GAOTD version IS registered to the user through a registry key during the run of the Activation executable."

The software is intimately tied to the computer ---definitely, and again, not portable.

Many portable apps register keys, but they also unregister them. Does this software do the same? Very doubtfully.

The author is desperately sticking to his viewpoint: Yeah, my software is portable. Why is he insisting?

I keep all software licenses/codes/keys/... where the software is stored, in a basic text file generally less than 1 KB. How simple is that? No need for a 10 MB software (without counting the darn .NET), no need to fiddle through a complicated interface no matter how nice.

Quoting #40: "There’s a work around – I can export all my details to text file before reformatting and dumping the software." I'm happy I did the workaround before I need to work around... LOL

Then, think a bit: Should you need to reinstall Windows, the first software to install will be this one because you stored your keys/code/... there. Acceptable? Feasible (GOTD requires activation, portability means (working) USB/SD device)?

Last but not least. The GOTD license is "Strictly personal usage", in total contradiction with the product's description: "[...] handy for IT professionals."

Yesterday, a guy complained about too many people not wanting .NET framework, arguing it takes too much time to develop without it. Looks like some developers targeting Windows users have forgotten the most simple steps before writing code. SerialSafe cannot be portable because its developer used Microsoft tools that prevent reaching his goals. It does take time to make a good software.

A simple test with another computer (without .NET) would have shown how wrong the proof of concept is: Selling the software as a portable application to IT professionals. Wrong two times here at GOTD!

Point taken, I did not think it necessary to write "Being portable means it can be installed on a removable drive" and then add "and can be used on any other computer" as it is an obvious requirement for portability.

Christopher, I just tried your software, however I have more questions for you:

The Online Help button is not functional.

In order to enter new record, I have to exit the program and restart again, otherwise will not allow me to enter new record.

When I click on Product name it brings the previous record in view and if you type anything in any field will modify the previous record.

There is no button to enter new record.

"The big drawback which I first experienced on my machine is that, when I attempted to change a setting, the program, before exiting, would ask whether the change should be saved. If I answered “Yes”, I got an error message (and I could only quit by having the program bomb). If I didn’t answer “Yes”, the program wouldn’t exit. After I forced a shutdown, and when I attempted to restart, I first had to delete the database file serialsafe.sdb (which presumably also holds the settings). This behavior did not exactly encourage adjusting the settings."

If there is an error, please copy the text into a an email and send to support@serialsafe.info.

The only possible cause I can see for this is that there may have not been a database present (saved) for it to update the options in.

"A further annoyance is that at least some of the settings apparently don’t work. I tried changing the Default Export Type Used with ‘Fast Export’ to “Text Export”, but that setting wouldn’t stick."

I've just tested this again and it works without issue. Please ensure you save the settings before testing. If it fails please provide you steps and I will attempt to reproduce and fix.

"Any attempt to remove encryption from the database file (which presumably, according to “Settings”, is possible), also fails. I tried to look at an unencrypted database file, primarily to see how the settings are stored, but couldn’t."

The setting turns off encrypting the file. After encryption is turned off, you can open the .sdb file with a ZIP utility.

If you have any further issues email support@serialsafe.info and I will be happy to troubleshoot.

@44 OldScotty: I think you misunderstood my writing. I was not talking about ways to protect programs. Though I am well aware about the different ways one could accomplish that.

I was referring to #20 quote "Being portable means it can be installed on a removable drive"
I can install almost every program on a removable drive and still it will mostly not be portable (it is almost like the program from today).

In #34 I was talking about portablility only, not about protection.

Portabilty has nothing to do with freeware at all. Portablility is about a way a program is written and about the consequences for using it.
Freeware is about agreements having to do with (copy)rights.

Even though there are touching edges between the two, in essence they are not about those edges. Your definition of portablilty is just not allright.

I really appreciate your work - serial retrieval and activation code detection is a complex issue - since all software use different methods for hiding registry entries or activation codes.

But I would like to see the following features:

1.Ability to scan either Installed/Stored software's on the machine/backup folder and list them with version info, Developer's website, update link etc. One can then manually enter his/her other details.
2. apart from option of adding the installer it could also point to the installer or folder that contains installation file. Since some software installers are over 50/100 MB.
3.Your interface is quite nice - an option for adding individual application's icon will be appreciated for enhancement.
4. Some application's use serial as well as activation code/file. So please include column for activation code in the serial info TAB. Since custom field is on the next TAB which can be used for Machine ID and installation number used by some software's.
5. Version History - update/upgrade record.
6. Reminder for subscription due date for some of the software's like antivirus - if installed on different systems.

Thanks

Windows 7 Pro 32-bit SP1, on Dell Precision T7500.

If you install the program directly in c:\Program Files\Serial Safe, it will only run (by invoking the 1,157,632-byte Setup.exe) AFTER the database file Serialsafe.sdb has been deleted! For each new run ohe program, the database file must first be deleted -- this, of course, is bizarre, ecause no data can in that way be saved.

In an effort to make the program work, I proceeded as follows:

1. I downloaded the installation files from the GOTD site, and unzipped serialsafe.zip, which yielded the following files:
date/time created Size (bytes) filename
------------------- ------------ ------------------
28-May-12 03:29 PM 704,838 setup.exe
28-May-12 03:18 PM 1,300,974 activate.exe
28-May-12 03:11 PM 698 readme.txt

2. I ran setup.exe, installing in folder c:\Serial Safe. To accomplish this, when setup.exe asks for the folder to install in, delete whatever folder is named in the text box, and insert "c:" instead. That will cause the program to be installed in the folder c:\Serial Safe, which apparently at that point is created by setup.exe.

3. Folder c:\Serial Safe now holds the following files:
date/time created Size (bytes) filename
------------------- ------------ ------------------
19-Apr-12 02:24 PM 1,157,632 setup.exe
28-May-12 01:55 PM 7,482 serialsafe.sdb

4. The newly created "setup.exe" (1,157,632 bytes, and completely different from the setup.exe unzipped earlier)) is NOT a setup file. Instead, it is the executable file of the program Serial Safe. Rename it, therefore, to "SerialSafe.exe".
(NOTE: If you do not rename it, but leave its name at Setup.exe, the program can of cource still be invoked by double-clicking Setup.exe.)

5. The program will now run if you double-click SerialSafe.exe. The program can be opened and closed in any normal fashion.

6. If you prefer to have the program "installed" (I use parentheses, because the program does not rely on Registry entries to run) in c:\Program Files\Serial Safe, simply move the subdirectory "Serial Safe" of the C: root directory (with its contents) to c:\Program Files.
The program will now run in the same fashion from that location.

General comment on the program:

The program appears to be interesting. Of course the data it saves can be saved in other ways also; at present I maintain a large text file to do so, which I encrypt, and save offline regularly.
But the program has a very nice, well-thought-out, scheme for registering all relevant data.

The big drawback which I first experienced on my machine is that, when I attempted to change a setting, the program, before exiting, would ask whether the change should be saved. If I answered "Yes", I got an error message (and I could only quit by having the program bomb). If I didn't answer "Yes", the program wouldn't exit. After I forced a shutdown, and when I attempted to restart, I first had to delete the database file serialsafe.sdb (which presumably also holds the settings). This behavior did not exactly encourage adjusting the settings.

I "solved" this problem (or rather, worked around it) by changing the setting which provides for that confirmation screen, and disabling it: Settings --> Dialogs --> check "Disable Save Changes on Exit Dialog".

An annoyance is also that the bottom part of the window asking for confirmation of a setetings change is not visible. My screen resolution is 1280x1024.
I tried other resolutions, but to no avail.

A further annoyance is that at least some of the settings apparently don't work. I tried changing the Default Export Type Used with 'Fast Export' to "Text Export", but that setting wouldn't stick.

Any attempt to remove encryption from the database file (which presumably, according to "Settings", is possible), also fails. I tried to look at an unencrypted database file, primarily to see how the settings are stored, but couldn't.

All in all, an interesting and potentially valuable program, but with faults which should be corrected.

Running Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit SP1
Did not download this program so I can't comment on the experience.
Please, would someone explain what is the importance of storing serials under a lock & key safe? Why storing the serials openly, lets say, on a notepad document is not good? Please help me out...

#34/44:

SerialSafe, standard version, maintains the information in the database. The software is portable and registration is done into the .sdb file. No information is tied to the system in the standard version.

The GAOTD version IS registered to the user through a registry key during the run of the Activation executable.

I will look at continuing development. Check the SerialSafe website over the next couple of months or shoot me an email at info@serialsafe.info for updates.

The registry is not the only means of protecting a program as it can be done in the folders/sub-folders or even the exe itself.

I don’t consider your definition portable, more freeware:-)

I am interested in the DST app; I'm left with the choice of making my own or waiting to find one; every 5 weeks I have to create 20 folders all named the same schemes. Hot damn I am now officially 33yrs old! yay me..

Please note the software is not a "serial retrieval" tool. It is a management tool for serial, activation and license information.

Software retrieval is a nice enhancement and will be reviewed for plausibility.

The tool has been "put on hold" for now. If there is a need for it, I can look at reopening the project. Right now it has fallen behind an XML parser tool I am working on finalizing.

Although I downloaded it but "ALL MY SOFTWARE" from http://www.bolidesoft.com/allmysoftware.html is free and also scans the system to list software's but does not retrieve serials.

For serial retrieving use any/all of the followings freewares

1.Enchanted Keyfinder v0.1 Beta - http://ekeyfinder.sourceforge.net/
2.License Crawler (as mentioned by Giovanni)
3.SoftKey Revealer (as mentioned by Giovanni)

Although it is portable but of no use since when I will reformat my PC and will try to get the details for installation of my software inventory - simply it will not work.

There's a work around - I can export all my details to text file before reformatting and dumping the software.

To Debu at #22: LockNote has been freeware, probably since it was released many years ago. In fact, it is also open source. From LockNote's website:
"LockNote is open source and is based upon open source technologies, e.g. the certified CryptoPP program library for strong encryption."

I agree with Karimthedream #2. Since serials are all text, you can easily use LockNote to create a file containing all your serials, credit card numbers, passwords, and other confidential information. Save the file with a password. This generates an exe file, basically containing LockNote itself and your data. Run this exe file, provide the password and you have access to all the stored information. In addition, you can easily edit the information and save it again to generate an updated exe file. It is definitely portable, no installation required: single file only. I do not see a need for SerialSafe.

#33:
The encryption method is AES-256. The encryption password value is a 512 bit value. The internal password value method is stated on the website (http://www.serialsafe.info/features.html).

"SerialSafe encrypts the internal application database, using a 512bit password value, adding an extra level of security to your data."

The wording on the website may be confusing and I will look into changing it and publishing the encryption method.

Currently the documentation is web based but a full .chm, .pdf and eBook help file will be available soon.

Christopher@serialsafe, as far as comment #25 goes, you should get with GAOTD and have them change that. It greatly upsets us when someone says their SW is portable, and then it isn't. All this does is force people to buy it directly from you, or look for other options, which is a good way to not achieve the desired result from the offering here..

@25 Christopher "The software is portable...The GAOTD version is registered to a machine and limits this portability."

So portable means: you can carry it around as long as it ends up in the same machine. I wouldn't call the GAotD-version portable, but at least you can put your usb-stick with serials in a save while not used.

@20 OldScotty "portable means it can be installed on a removable drive"

The software I write (only about 20 years now) is only portable when it does store everything it needs in the installed folder or subfolders. This way you can collect the works and carry it around on a stick, put it on a different computer or whatever you want. A more stringent definition wiil allow it not even to write on the host.

Because you cannot walk around with a computers registry an app will never be portable when it needs its own registrydata. In this case you will loose your registration on every other computer it will be used for the first time and activate.exe only activates today.

Dear GOTD users,

Please note provided Setup.exe file is self executable archive which contains standalone setup provided by the developer and database file created by the software. You may extract both files to any destination folder of your choice either on the usb stick or on disk C as default settings state. Activate.exe file is program created by GOTD team which registers SerialSafe.

Please consult readme.txt to properly install the software.

Sorry for the misunderstanding and have a nice giveaway!

Best Regards,

@22 Debu

LockNote is 100% free

https://www.steganos.com/us/products/for-free/locknote/overview/

http://sourceforge.net/projects/locknote/

Though LockNote can store any text and encrypt it with a password
it is just plain text, whilst todays offer has an encrypted
database. Storing text inside SerialSafe you could use under
the Custom Information tab the Comments text field to write
notes etc.

The program lacks proper documentation and also very shallow
of technical info.
The developer was not answering my question to what cipher
he has used. As if that's a secret to keep secret....
It's important to know if I use a NSA approved AES or a cipher
that will make the NSA run away from cracking it.

Still, seen better stuff out there (free or paid)!

A good concept is TrueCrypt, but also TrueCrypt was receiving
some critics regarding certain "functionality".

I will stick with KeyPass
http://keepass.info/
it's free, OpenSource, no license to pay and does a lot more

But Thanks anyway for offering SerialSafe
