To B Kennedy, this not a playback tool it is a search tool, the playback part is Angel Vox, a separate piece of trial software that you were prompted to download during installation. That part of the software will stop working when the trial period ends. I think a lot of people will be confused when this happens because it is not explained clearly enough.

When I saw this offering, I thought "lamer". Then I remembered that although I was born in Canterbury, UK, I have (cringe) never read Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.... partly because middle English is a tough slog. So I reconsidered: what the heck do I have to lose?

I downloaded the portable version and everything sailed through the activation and so on. I opened the software and once again, all was flawless and I got my audiobook in seconds. So I have to say, what a great little app!

Then I started thinking: this developer is so confident with the software that they offered it without need for serialization, only activation (to make sure it was installed within the allotted time). Furthermore, they also offered a portable version. Now how is that for generosity?

So this offer is a win, win, win. We get to audition it fully for free and keep it, the developer piques our interest in that they are so above-board, and GAOTD wins kudos from people like me who appreciate all that goes into offers like this.

No matter where one starts, whether you need this software or are just curious, or if you are the greatest Googler on the Planet ;) .... here it comes down to the software and the developer. Frankly I cannot find nor conjure up anything negative to say.

A full 10 thumbs up from me ... yeah I'm all thumbs;) Bravo !!

Why don't people review software for what it is, not what they want? Downloader will give you a list of audiobooks available (5396)on librivox, each preceded by the language its in, if not English. A quick scroll through and I spotted books I had wanted to read but forgotten about. Integrates nicely with Flashget 3.7. Installation on an Athlon 2, 2GB RAM, XP SP3 took less than a minute. Its an additional weapon in the armoury and search engines don't always find (in the first few hundred items) what you are looking for.

One thing nobody has mentioned is that you can borrow audiobooks (as well as ebooks) from some public libraries. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which doesn't spend as much money on libraries as many other cities. Yet here's what they have available for us:

"Nearly 9,000 eBooks, 9,000 eAudiobooks, and over 1,000 videos.
Borrow up to 4 titles at a time and keep them for up to 10 days."

Check with your local library to see if they have audiobooks you can borrow.

Be aware that I downloaded Angel Vox on March 12th and it stated no activation required as does this one, but when I tried to use it, it was only the trial version. This says it doesn't need to be activated also.

LOL I did download and install it but I already a bunch of my favorite audio books in Angel's Vox and have continued using it most of the day. Yes there are some excellent audiobooks for free at several sites but the books that I want to listen to aren't always free. For example I wanted the book Snuff by Terry Pratchett and it wasn't free. I paid for it and for many others that more current than most at Librivox.org. I can also "check out" audio books from my public library's website for free downloading them and then deleting them when I am done with them.

I searched the web for Angel's Vox and didn't find the free version so I guess that I will be buying a copy when my new laptop arrives. You see, after I looked at my own copy, I found that it was registered to this site. LOL

Is there a difficulty with integration with Angel's Vox 1.6?
I am able to launch the downloader from Angel's Vox just fine, but the other way has a little trouble.
If Angel's Vox ISN'T already running, the downloader's play button launches it and the book plays, but if Angel's Vox is already open it will just present a blank file list and the book is not listed or played.
Is there a way to fix this?

For those that say this is superfluous - how do you speed up playback of an audio book? I have found that it is easy to get used to 2X or even 3X speed in playback cutting the listen time by half or two thirds. That feature alone makes a playback tool very valuable.

The sites mentioned have more than the classics, there is older science fiction, mysteries, history, folk and fairy tales.

I have downloaded from Librivox a number of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, including "Warlords of Mars," the first in ERB's Martian Series and the basis for Disney's "John Carter."

Windows 7 32 bit laptop. This v1.3 updated my old v1.2 with no problems, no need to uninstall old, and no duplicate program folders. All shortcuts to the the previous version of the program still worked to access this one. Thanks for the upgrade. It looks the same pretty much, but the change log made it look worth upgrading, especially when it's this easy and trouble free.

The program does exactly what it says it will, however it looks a bit dull and frankly doesn't do anything you can't do yourself. So yeah it works but is is superfluous.

As a helper tool, this may or may not be a good one. I'm choosing not to give a thumbs either direction, but rather to leave a comment regarding the materials it retrieves.

I used to listen to audio books from LibriVox, because I do, indeed, enjoy the classics. You need to know that it can be a very challenging experience because the readers are not professionals, and some of them don't even read well at all. For longer works, (e.g. I listened to Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) you will in all likelihood have multiple readers, some who read well, others who do not, and still others with accents that make understanding quite difficult.

So, this software may be excellent, but be aware of the challenges related to the material it retrieves.

Update: I found an older and portable version 1.3 available for free at en.kioskea.net, but the only other ones were giveaways from last year. If I have somehow missed any available way to get a current version of Angel's Vox for free without buying the Downloader we can otherwise get for free right here today, then would someone please enlighten me. Thanks for your help.

Installs easily and quickly under 64-bit Win 7 on AMD tri-core 'puter. Using ATT&T U-verse broadband, I downloaded "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" by Edgar Allan Poe in half a minute and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" in 3.5 minutes, obviously from a different source. No sign of the problems referred to in #3 and #4 above, which I am glad to find out. FWIW, I haven't tried the portable version due to off-putting remarks above, but I would love to hear from anyone who has successfully tried it. BTW, thanks to #7 Caed for the info about the free version of Angel's Vox, which I will probably be getting very shortly.

Agree with the librivox.org site being a good site to go to directly.
BUT, be aware that it is slow as molasses. Just be prepared to be patient as it goes from one page to the other, sometimes a 10 second delay, sometimes not, no rhyme or reason i seems.

I have not yet downloaded this program and have been listening to my audiobooks in M4B format (downloads the entire book instead of multiple mp3 files) using iTunes. I go to archive.org or librivox.org, or anyplace else on the web and download my audiobooks and use itunes to play and catalog them. For newer books, I have an audible account that plays via Itunes, or the Audible Manager, these may even play on other players. There does not seem to be a downside to this. If you want to try it with iTunes, simply open iTunes and import your file or file folder into iTunes and if it is in the M4B format, it will automatically go into the "Books" or "Audiobooks" section of iTunes. You can even download the artwork from librivox.org or archive.org and add them to iTunes.
Only my 2 cents

Ack, got cut off... so to continue..

What I found out is that it is "integrated". You need "both" programs. For them to work together. So, I see no reason not to have both programs, since this one is free. Why not? You can always uninstall it.

Fwiw, I installed both Angel's Vox (I know the giveaway is not about AV, but AV has an "integration feature" and by the same company, so I"m going to talk about it some anyways) and Audio Downloader Pro and each installed without problem on Windows 7x64. However, I am unfamiliar with Audiobook readers or public domain.

I was hoping/expecting a friendlier interface and a library to sift through... With ADownloader.

I typed in Art of War and came up with 2 versions and the choice to download 3 versions of version 2. 64 & 128 kbps mp3s and 1 ogg. I chose the ogg. I then opened Angel's Vox to play the ogg. It didn't seem to be able to find the ogg or recognize it when I tried to import it into AV.

Now, with all this in mind, and I'm not going to give a full review as I simply don't want to go into all of it as I'm lazy and I'm finding ADownloader unintuitive... ADownloader seems to simply be a Download MANAGER of public domain titles from 2 sources that can be easily paused and bookmarked (download position saved and resumed at a later time) AVox appears to be a (fairly decent) audio reader as #7 above states/implies, but is sold as a different product.
But, be sure to read the first statement by the Publisher. If you pay $30 (no way "I" would ever even consider it) you can get both programs)

Again, this is just my first impression of both programs after spending a total of 20mins of installation, d/l of Art of War 2x of 2 formats and starting the audiobook player. I hope you have found this helpful.

Audiobooks are a great way to learn or improve the listening and speaking skills of a foreign language (English in my case…LOL!)

So this tool is perfect for me!!

However, if you are eager to download free and open-domain audiobooks, just go here and then search & download whatever you want:

#6 Audiobook Downloader Pro helps to catalog downloads which you cannot get if you just take it straight from the website. It helps to remember that the book is on your hard drive.

#7 I hadn't heard of Angel's vox before; I like what you mention about the pausing. That's like what the (brand unmentioned) paid player does for purchased books.

#8 You're very welcome. I transferred files from my pc to my blackberry and used the media player without a problem because they are mp3's. That way using my earphones I have been able to listen anywhere in privacy. Don't feel bad if the book makes you fall asleep on your flight either; books do that no matter what. For a 28 hour flight you must have gotten some odd connections. Bon voyage.

Thank you Susan. There are so many books people mention that I have not read, Moby Dick being one of them. I am downloading it right now but as GOTD User stated I just went to Librivox.org, downloaded the zip file and can put it on my MP3 Player. No program needed. The whole book is only 677 MB. Pride And Prejudice may just be another one on my list too. I have a 28 hour Air Flight at the end of the month and I am sure I can make a big dent in that time..... or fall asleep.

I downloaded the previous giveaway and found out about the resources for the free audiobooks at the same time. There's the proprietary downloader/player for the online paid audiobook services that are something else of course which I had used previously. Audiobooks are truly great. Some people similarly to myself, have difficulties with staying focused on the printed page. Free audiobooks are the public domain. But let me introduce this concept a little bit better than previous posters have. One of the resources called LibriVox, is a volunteer organization dedicated to creating audiobooks of public domain books that do include the classics. I downloaded several works by Jane Austin using Audiobooks Pro but also found that the program let me sort out the versions of it, but it is possible to both find and download these items without any program. They are on websites. Hearing through the painstaking chapters of Pride And Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Lady Susan were enlightening experiences for me. There are more I'd like to hear.

Many people may not be aware of the extent to which these classics are referenced in the modern works. For example, the motion picture "Clueless" is an adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma", and one scene in the motion picture "Burlesque" verbatim repeats a dialogue of that same story. I've heard so much about the significance of Moby Dick and have never read it. So I've just downloaded the audiobook, and it is the next thing I'd like to listen to.

Audiobook Downloader Pro gives search capabilities that you can use without knowing where something is located or if it exists. Try it, I suggest, to seek things that you may like to catch up on for the sake of literary equality with those who had learned these works. Literature is still important in our modern popular culture. Any books people mention that you don't know what people mean? I go through that all of the time. Thanks to the publisher and to GOTD for this very fine program.

Given away previously;
- http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/audiobook-downloader-pro/ (37%)
- http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/audiobook-downloader-pro-1-2/ (32%)

It's a nice program, only thing is that... Freeware (public domain) books are old, and mostly... Well, not that interesting to own for your e-reader. Sure, it's literaruture - but that's about it usually : )

So, enjoy if you are a reader of the Classics. If not, skip this. Google will give you the same results. Or one of the many many many we bcollections online...

Dear users, this is a quick start guide for Audiobook Downloader Pro:

1. Download and install the program, then run it. This giveaway is already activated, so you do not need to deal with serial numbers. (Do note that the regular installable version is highly recommended for you instead of the portable edition, which is for experienced users)
2. On the main window, type-in a search query into the corresponding field, then hit “Enter”. The search string may be a book name, author, or a language name (for instance: “Bible”, “Mark Twain”, or “German”).
3. You can access an audiobook summary by selecting a search result item, and then calling the File -> Open Audiobook Page menu command.
4. Download an audiobook (File -> Download Audiobook), then listen and enjoy it!

If you will like the program, please consider purchasing it. Till April 25th, when buying Audiobook Downloader Pro, you will also get a personal license for the Angel’s Vox audiobook player for free.

Thank you for your time reading this!
