Well the program looked good to me until i tried to run it without administrator rights. It ran trial version instead. As do not like to run most programs with admin rights it will not be a keeper for me.

Great program. I have an MP3 player and I use it for travelling by bus. I love listening to music but sometimes I just want to engross myself in hearing a story. I've downloaded it and now using it for the first time...wow...that is so neat. Thanks 'GiveAwayOfTheDay' gang.

Thanks Mike for your great and detailed review: as always I've really appreciate your comments!

Just a question for you: taking into account that I already have a copy of Angel's Vox in my USB DRIVE (it was given away here a few months ago, remember?), what fits better for you: the PORTABLE version of Audiobook Downloader Pro 1.2 or the regular version??

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Say, instead of having to update the program to get a new database, how about incremental online updates? Even better, how about hosting the database online and allowing the user to choose what specific genre/author/publishers/etc. that they'd like to cache? Sure, the database is not huge right now, but when it is, it would be dumb to download the same data over again.

I can probably make a SQLite search and download program for under $29.95. How about lowering the price, unless there's something we can't find for free on the intertubez?

I downloaded the portable version. It installed and activated fine on my Win7-64 laptop's SD card. I like that it provides the option of changing the book download location. Not giving me that option is always a deal breaker for me.

I've been looking for an easy way to grab some of the free audiobooks. I've been an Audible subscriber for years but cut back my subscription to the basic level (no books, just discount) since their format has become difficult to use. I have a huge library (at one time I was getting 2 books a month for $15 and really stocked up), quite a few books left that I haven't listened to, but they don't work on all my devices.

Mark Twain is an ancestor, and I have a goal to read all his books. I travel a lot, 6 hour drives each time, so have lots of time to listen. This will make downloading much easier. I haven't checked how it responds with dial-up but the one-click advantage of an unattended overnight download would be a plus for me since I have a bandwidth limit with my wireless card.

IF this works well with a dial-up connection and doesn't constantly time-out, it would be worth the money for someone like me. Otherwise, I wouldn't be willing to pay as much as they're asking.

Thanks GOTD and SuperUtils.

fake software. just go to edit"list all available audiobooks" and you got the list of what you can find (aprox 4000 titles) if it ain't in that list you can not find i with this software.
Great names like Stephen King, Isaac Asimov or Robert A Heinlein are not present while i know there are audiobooks available for these authors

thumbs down, i don't wanna pay for software that performes worse then when i type my search in google and i do't want it for free either

#12: "... The visually impaired are a group who can most benefit from a program of this type, yet the interface was certainly not designed with them in mind. "

NOT disagreeing really, but the big *market* for audiobooks is just people that want to multitask, e.g. listening while driving, or maybe relaxing on a plane flight, where an mp3 player is much easier to carry than a hard cover or paperback. The visually impaired do benefit most, but they're not the one's the audiobook market always targets.

That said & if it helps, those with some visual impairment can often benefit from high contrast settings &/or large font displays in win7, &/or when your hardware supports it, setting the display resolution lower than the max with a larger monitor, or perhaps even using something like a cheaper, smaller HDTV rather than a PC monitor... I've seen several HDTVs from 19"28" priced the same or less than a PC monitor, that natively display at 720p, which would make text & icons & such much larger than the native display for a same-sized PC monitor. Many PCs have HDMI connections already, or you could use a DVI -> HDMI adapter, or for older systems I've seen VGA -> HDMI converters &/or USB -> HDMI converters for ~$25 on sale at sites like meritline.com.

#14: "... My father is completely blind and the only thing he has that he enjoys is his talking books. He has a machine that plays these books on CDs ... So if this works, it would be very useful for me to make books on CD for him. What I’m asking is, if anyone also knows of any other programs like these? I noticed that this has a large thumbs down amount. So if anyone knows of any other programs in addition, or instead of this, could they please post names or links?"

FWIW I'd suggest (if you don't know already) finding out if there's a particular format his reader/player uses. Audiobook Downloader Pro helps you find & download audiobooks in the public domain at those 2 sites, but you might have to convert for his player, or skip the player & load them on a few mp3 players for him -- I've seen them as cheap as $3-$4, & rather than trying to navigate from one book to the next, maybe load several, each with just one book, swapping out those he's listened to with fresh downloads. Some of the really cheap mp3 players I've seen have really minimal controls that I'd think he could manage.

TO actually make audiobooks OTOH, if that's what you were asking about, you might check around the sites & forums of people who create the audiobooks for sites like librivox.org. I'm hearing impaired so I'm not up on the best or latest tech for electronically reading text, but I know it's fairly widespread with a lot of resources you could explore -- even Adobe's PDF reader has it. Using that you could fairly easily make audio recordings or books from a huge number of sources, from newpapers & magazines to perhaps even Amazon's books for their Kindle, & they often have several free.

I don't know why this is getting 60% thumbs down. It's a nice simple helper program. I would not pay $30.00 for it, but it does what it says it does.

Things to make it nicer might be:
* Play samples
* download ebook, not just audio books
* show some words about the books

Maybe add some social media to the connection, such as ratings and comments.

Cute little program, however it misses a lot as well. When I type in "sigler" nothing comes up, even though he's one of the most popular podiobook creators. Although podiobooks are posted by chapters and not full novels. I think I would prefer to stick with Google searching to find stuff.

And it's possible to record your own audiobook without having to do it through Librivox. I've recorded Beowulf (although admittedly it wasn't a great reading) a few years ago and posted the files for it on the Internet Archive.

Honestly, I was wondering about the advantages versus just going to the site and downloading directly. However, this is a neat little program. As a reading teacher I make use of the classics, and this makes getting the audio versions really fast and easy. True, it helps to know what you are looking for, but in my case, I do go after specific titles/authors. Thanks for this one!!

Audiobook Downloader Pro is a stand-alone helper or assistant for downloading audio books from librivox.org & the audio archive at archive.org. It includes a searchable database of their public domain books, & right-clicking an entry you can either go to the book's web page or download the audio book, in your choice of the available formats, using Audiobook Downloader Pro's multi-threaded downloader. If you have SuperUtils.com' Angel's Vox, you can also click to open or play an audiobook you just downloaded, though Audiobook Downloader Pro will not remember that you already downloaded that book later on. While searching the database is faster than searching the 2 sites, I think perhaps the biggest convenience is downloading the individual chapter files all in one step -- the multi-threaded downloading is nice, but whether having several download connections to the site [rather than just one] helps or not depends on the site &/or how many people are downloading at the same time, e.g. I maxed my available bandwidth whether I was downloading directly from librivox.org or using today's GOTD.

Essentially a portable app already, the regular Audiobook Downloader Pro gives you Start Menu & Desktop shortcuts, & stores it's settings & database under User App/Application Data -- you can also uninstall through Windows' Start Menu or Control Panel. The portable version comes packaged in a WinRAR self-extractor [running it you choose where you want to put the extracted files], stores its settings & database in the program's folder, & does not include shortcuts or uninstall [to do that you just delete the program's folder]. A small app, the regular version has 9 files, 1 folder, taking up ~6 MB in the app's folder -- the portable version (including the database) has 9 files at ~41 MB. Installing the regular version adds an uninstall key to Windows registry. System requirements are minimal, though [per Process Explorer] it does use Internet Explorer. FWIW the readme.pdf says Audiobook Downloader Pro may or may not work & is unsupported in VMs [Virtual Machines], but it seemed to work fine for me. Settings [preferences] are limited to "Enable instant search", the path or location to "Save downloaded Audiobooks to", what you want to happen "When double-clicking list item:", & "Automatically check for updates..." -- there are no settings for the number of download threads, & Process Explorer showed it using 5 during tests.

SuperUtils.com has Angel's Vox available as a trial download -- you get an initial nag screen when it's started, & then every 20 minutes. Briefly, the program folder holds 13 files, 1 folder, ~2 MB, and you get a folder under User App/Application Data to store settings. I recorded 251 new registry entries, though 75 of those where for MUICache [I call them Windows garbage but others may not agree -- Google/Bing if curious]. Using Angel's Vox it automagically shows the books/chapters I downloaded with Downloader Pro, has a button to start Audiobook Downloader Pro, & among several other features lets you speed up or slow down playback [set tempo].

I think the 900 lb. Gorilla of audio books is Audible [audible.com], but only a few there are free AFAIK, & their DRM format won't play everywhere. Books are copyrighted, & until that (C) expires & they enter the public domain, the only [legal] way to get them for free is when they're offered as part of some sort of promotion, e.g. Audible often has one or a few titles they give away. Otherwise you can get audio books from Amazon, often your local library, Apple's App Store, book stores etc. You can also play eBooks using text to speech, & record the results. Audiobooks.org may be useful if you don't want to wade through the results using Google/Bing. That's not to imply that the only good books aren't [yet] in the public domain -- newer isn't always better -- and Audiobook Downloader Pro could be quite useful for exploring those older treasures.

Very nice program. Does what it says, and does it quickly. I was able to open up the downloaded audiobooks in my AngelsVox program and found that I had a choice of the various narrated versions so that I could choose to listen to the one I liked the best. Thanks!

#4 Matt, thanks for the summary. I plow through audiobooks at a pretty good clip, and this program, in combination with Libravox, is near-perfect for me. I'll add that for some classics (Mark Twain, for example) there are multiple versions of the book, with different readers. Use LibraVox to listen to samples of each verstion. Then, when you've chosen the right version of the book, use AudioBook Downloader to bring the complete set of sound files to your computer.

This is a neat little program. I love listening to Librivox but trying to find what you like is time consuming... here you type your keyword and up comes a list. With one click you can check out the page of the download to see if you really want it... and if it is then download is push-button and hassle free. A keeper for me. Delivers what it promises. Already downloading a book... fastest I ever found one. Very big thank you to SuperUtils and GOTD!!

Audiobooks are a great way to learn or improve the listening and speaking skills of a foreign language (English in my case...LOL!)

But heck....are you eager to download free and open-domain audiobooks?

Just go here and then search & download whatever you want:

What's the problem, dudes??

No offense meant for the developer but, in my humble view, charging users $29.95 for something they could do for FREE does not make sense to me.

Cheers from Italy!!

My father is completely blind and the only thing he has that he enjoys is his talking books. He has a machine that plays these books on CDs and is a member of a blind library association that sends him these books on CD. So if this works, it would be very useful for me to make books on CD for him.

You shouldn't comment at all. I have used cleaners for years and never had usability issues. The same with registry cleaners. The free ones I use have a restore function in case that does happen. I am not on here to promote any particular software, so I won't name them.

The program downloaded and installed satisfactorily, then it started to go downhill. The visually impaired are a group who can most benefit from a program of this type, yet the interface was certainly not designed with them in mind. The fonts are far too small as is the window, inexcusable in such a highly priced program. Having said that it still could be a keeper, that is if the range of books available is satisfactorily.

I have no use for this program, but I download it anyway... because it seems to be a very simple program that´s overpriced !

Features
- Download multi files with a fair speed
- MP3 - 64/128 kbps format
- Ogg vorbis format

Missing Features:
- No advanced search options by Title, Narrowtor, Year etc.
- Pop-up window that need to be closed by user after download is done
- GUI isn´t up-to-date...

Since I don't normally use audiobooks, I don't know how this compares to other programs, but I tried the regular and portable versions. Both installed cleanly, easy to use, but the incremental search appears to only search whole words. Included free audio book list is small at 4,146 according to their web page, managing the free audio books on LibriVox and Internet Archive. On the plus side, by default this will auto-update to newer versions and more complete listings.

I never responded to RichU's comments number 42 and 43 on the Zoner Photo Studio 13 Home giveaway about Win7's Search. In the first place, if you don't have natural language queries and partial matching enabled then it's much harder to use, as the full syntax is a pain. Common words are extremely likely to be properties, and Windows Search matches against those first. If you're looking for a common word as a value, leave off the last letter to avoid an undesired Property match. Indexing runs at low priority in the background. Therefor, if you just installed something or just created a document, it may not be immediately available in the index, but will soon be. On Vista+, Internet Explorer runs in Protected Mode, and for whatever stupid reason, Microsoft fails to set the indexing attribute for files saved by IE while in Protected Mode, so you have to set it yourself (you can use Explorer, but I use a command file occasionally). You never turn the indexing service off. If you've already damaged your index, rebuild it. The default Win7 Search results are extremely complete and correct, learn to use it.

I don't bother to comment about optimizers, tweakers, and cleaners. Except for some high-quality disk defragmenters, nobody who knows anything about Windows develops or uses those. They are guaranteed to mess up Windows in numerous ways, if you're using them then your Windows installation is guaranteed to have usability issues. Oh, and I'll bet most of the people who are whining about how their own computers are "spying" on them and "invading their privacy" are using Facebook, which is one of the most egregious privacy invaders.

Also, should have mentioned that the downloaded file at 128kbps MP3 is not one file, but all the chapters individually. The programme just downloads them in one go for you.

Database currently has 4146 titles - of which 271 are in German, 106 in French, 67 in Dutch, 28 in Portuguese, 27 in Italian, 26 in Spanish, 8 in Danish, 6 in Russian, 6 in Finnish, 5 in Swedish, 4 in Latin, 2 in Polish, 1 in Urdu and 1 in Tamill.

All titles appear to be classics or obscure titles. Don't expect to find any recent bestsellers here. But then again, that's exactly what the free audiobook databases contain (like LibriVox), so no real surprises there.

There is no option of defining any search parameters, and results are sorted by Author's surname. You can either browse all the titles at once or type in a keyword to find a title. This means that you really need to know what you are looking for, as there is too large a number of titles to browse (unless you're looking for something in a non-English language). Having some search parameters would certainly have helped (i.e. displaying all audiobooks within a specified genre).

Downloading a title allows you to choose a level of quality, which I assume depends on how it is stored on the various databases. "Dracula" had options of 64kbps MP3, 128kbps MP3 and Ogg Vorbis formats. Choosing the 128kbps MP3 (907MB) downloaded straight away at 1.32 MB/s on my connection, which is fairly good. You can even download multiple titles at the same time. They open in seperate download windows.

I was able to play it on VLC & JetAudio without issue. I can't see any problems with then transfering this file as is to an MP3 player.

I find the LibriVox website much better for browsing, as it allows me to browse by genre and provides options to download single chapters, to see how the reader sounds. The download options are rubbish, though, as most books only allow you to download them in full at 64kbps MP3. You have to either listen to a stream for higher quality, or download books by chapters. This programme happily bypasses that.

Bottom-line, this programme does exactly what it says on the tin. If you're a lover of audiobooks and the classics, then this is certainly worth a look.

As a free product, I would give this programme a rating of 6/10. If I had to pay for it, I'd give it a 1/10. I'll be keeping it, and using it in conjuction with searches/browsing made in LibirVox.

This is a nifty little program. Yes, it's true that these books are available for free without the program but for anyone into audiobooks, this is a good program to have. You can pick various qualities as seen here: http://i.imgur.com/MvP8q.png
The transfer rate is good (mine was 338 KBs) That will depend on your connection but it's nice to know the source's server is fast.

These are great for road trips, listening to around the house or burning to disc to gift as a volunteer for the blind. It was cool to learn that we can volunteer to record ourselves and submit books (written before 1928) to the library for others to listen to. More info on volunteering here: http://librivox.org/volunteer-for-librivox/

Dear users, this is a quick start guide for Audiobook Downloader Pro:

1. Download and install the program, then run it. This giveaway is already activated, so you do not need to deal with serial numbers.
2. On the main window, type-in a search query into the corresponding field. The search string may be a book name, author, or a language name (for instance: “War and Peace”, “Charles Dickens”, or “German”).
3. You can access an audiobook summary by selecting a search result item and then calling the File -> Open Audiobook Page menu command.
4. Download an audiobook (File -> Download Audiobook), then listen and enjoy it!
