I've installed and the program runs, however, I can't get past 2.4M on any download before it freezes my internet connection and stops downloading. If I go to the website & download, that works fine. Unfortunate, as this looked to be very convenient.

Try to maximise the IdeaInformer with the icon in the upper right corner of the widget.
You should be able to insert your suggestions. It worked for me.

Good luck!

What a gem!

It can't be easier or faster to find and get the book you want.
Others have already highly praised this tool - I'll join in the chorus :)
And with this deal - 2 great programmes for one price -, it's hard to resist, I think I have to open my purse.
Many thanks to GOTD and SuperUtils.com for this fine St. Nicholas gift - it seems I was a good girl this year ;) -.

@6... There's no need to convert to mp4 to play as audiobooks on ipods. All you need to do is change the media type to audiobook via Get Info on the context menu when you right click on the mp3 files.

This is great, and for those who "don't get it", the main benefit of this software is the download of all chapters in 1 click. Yes you can use http://librivox.org without the software, but most of the books require downloading one chapter at a time. Choose the portable version and you won't lose the license if you have to change computers. Thanks!

Hey everyone,

It's me, Brian, who wrote the review in the second comment. I've read Ashraf's review and we both have drastically different opinions. I rate the software very high while Ashraf believes it is near useless.

The main reason I rated the software so highly was because of its design and potential to become a brilliant application. I honestly believe it stands well on its own. Purchasing a license gets you lifetime updates, and the developer behind the application does listen to reviewers like me and Ashraf for suggestions - I know the developer and I have seen excellent software created by them.

One of everyone's main concerns is how anyone could go to LibriVox.org and search from there. Yes, I know this is possible, but if you've tried the application, you'll find that Audiobook Downloader Pro searches and organizes audiobooks much, much better than LibriVox.org. LibriVox.org is messy, and Audiobook Downloader Pro really does a great job streamlining things.

But honestly, maybe neither Ashraf or I are correct. My review isn't a billion times better than his, and his review isn't a billion times better than mine. Our two drastically different opinions on the software mean that some really love it and some think it's useless. For today's giveaway, it think it would be best to give it a shot yourself.

All I can say about this is -- simple, straightforward and efficient! Fetched it, registered it, put in a search word, found an interesting title, downloaded 322mb in 'no time at all', clicked play and AngelVox started reading with clear, clean audio! BTW, Angel's Vox was a GAOTD a while ago...

Back again after downloading and installing the program. One thing I noticed is under settings here is a 'pre-checked' box that searches for updates. Might want to un-check it in case it installs updates and voids the Giveaway license. - Using Win 7 home and looks like a winner for me. Thanks again GTOD and SuperUtils. I'll be checking out the player.

# 9 Madsonic - Wondering it you entered the info from the read me file correctly. (Giveaway in parenthesis) I was able to cut and paste both lines straight into the required spaces in spite of the hyphens.

One thing that's not clear: can one update the list of books, which appears static? The product page lists the precise numbers of audiobooks available: "Enables you to search and download among 3825 free audio books (and 234663 files)." And the list appears too quickly to be something that is compiled on the fly.

But there is an option under settings to automatically check for updates on startup. Usually that means that with a paid license, it checks for new binaries within that version. But in this case it might be checking the superutils site for new audiobooks. If not, then that would be my suggestion, except Wreford-Brown already suggested that.

Minor points: This developer's offerings have been straightforward and robust. The portable option is great too. Angel's Vox has nice simple options for listening on your PC. Besides being able to speed up listening without any chipmunk sound, it has a couple of simple jump-forward controls (probably more useful for podcasts): right arrow for 5 secs., "s" for 30 secs., and one jump-back control: left arrow for 5 secs.

To #8. Blessa
This software does not "read" the audiobooks, as its name says, its a downloader. Audiobooks are in audioformats, like mp3, and just as any audio file, any audio player you have installed can play them, they are always read by the recorded narrator just as a music audio file is sung by the recorded singer. Its not a text-to-speech thing where you have a written text and can have it read by a computer voice.

This is a nice little software that I fell instantly in love with, as I also have grown fond of Angel's Vox.
Yes, you can just go to Librivox and search/download from there, however, with Audiobook Downloader 1. the search is much faster (instant results), and much much more convenient and
2. the download is also much more convenient, as you don't have to open xx pages and wait until they load, but can simply click the search result, choose the output option and download them all simultanously.
I really don't care if it downloads multiple books in one download manager or has a window for each - whats the difference, as long as it downloads them all into the one place you set in the settings.

One thing is really annoying as many people have already mentioned this problem but nobody cares to fix it: the idea widget seems to only work for some people and never for others. I have tried many times, both with my PC and with my netbook, and it does not work. So its an unfair thing, only some people ever have any chance to win. It really needs to be fixed.
So, since I'm not able to add my suggestion there I add it here for the developer (just in case, contact can be made via my website link :) ):
I would like to have the Angel's Vox integration improved. If using the portable version, Audiobook Downloader doesn't find Angel's Vox.
You could add the option to enter Angel's path in the settings of Audiobook Downloader; also add not only "PLay" in Angels's Vox but also "Add to Angels's Vox library".
Also it would be fine to add more audiobook download sites besides Librivox and the option to add URLs manually.

Thank you to GAOT and Superutils.com

After reading the SuperUtils description, the comments and going to LibriVox (whom I have never visited before) I searched for a bit, found a title that interested me, downloaded it and started to listen using Irfanview. - Fortunately I chose a book with a reader that had a good voice.

Thanks Wreford-Brown #6 & Sasha #10 - Your comments are very helpful. I can see the value of this search program after visiting LibriVox. One could save a lot of time with this search program. I also see the value of their offering of the Angel's Vox Player with the features it has and of course it will depend on the user if the value of those features equals $30.00. Seems steep to me so I'll be taking them up on the 30 day free trial and see if, for me, it is worth that much.

I can't comment on the software yet as I've yet to download it but at this point, from what I've read and seen I think it does look useful for those that like to listen while they work, play or rest. Thanks GOTD and SuperUtils.

Audiobook Downloader Pro is an external search app so you don't have to use the search page at LibriVox http://goo.gl/etwvQ . As a version 1 app [released 11/29/10 per the app's site] there are bound to be refinements &/or features that aren't there yet [add your wish list with the "Informer Widget" up above], but overall it works & can save you some time if you're a LibriVox fan. The way it works is you enter a search term, & get a list of available audio books -- selecting a title you can right-click -> "Open Audiobook Page", use the HotKey [Ctrl+o] to do the same, or select to "Download AudioBook", which opens a drop-down list of files available... a couple of buttons on the ToolBar do the same things. Options or preferences amount to 1) where you want to save the audiobooks you download, 2) what happens when you double-click a title in the list [i.e. Open audiobook page etc.], & 3) automatically check for updates.

The developer was nice enough to include a portable version, but be careful -- setup is a WinRAR self-extractor, & by default it does not put the extracted program files in a folder, so unless you change the destination for the self-extractor 1st, you'll wind up with several "loose" files at root [i.e. C:\] on the same drive where Setup.exe was located. The main difference between the portable & regular versions is where the 28 MB SQLite (database) .dat file is kept -- the regular version stores it together with an .ini file under User App/Application Data, while the portable version keeps those with the other program files. The regular version also adds Start Menu shortcuts, plus the app's path is added to the registry along with an uninstall key. Because of that .dat file the portable version takes up ~33 MB [compacting doesn't help] -- the regular version's program folder takes up ~5 MB in 9 files, with the remainder stored under Application Data [XP] or App Data [Vista/7] as mentioned earlier.

I’ve been working with this program for a couple hours and think the interface is simple enough for most people to understand. There’s also a large enough selection of books to keep someone in reading bliss for many months, if not more. I can also see this program being good for a person’s health if they do a lot of traveling, especially by air. They’ll be able to keep themselves occupied during those long and frequent delays at the airport, thus keeping their blood pressure at an acceptable level...lol

@#2 & 3 - The so called “reviewers” must be related. Both are using GOTD as a means to get people to visit their personal websites just like Google (except Google pays GOTD for that right). As for their comments, it’s hard to say who plagiarized who as the contents are eerily similar. They list six goods, three bads, and implore people to visit their personal homepages. On this one I’d have to say #3 plagiarized #2; Brian posted his review at 3:01am and #3 posted at 3:02am (it’s like a drag race). I’ll just add that GOTD releases a program at 3:00am. Strange, very strange...lol

Followed this "2. Activate it with the supplied serial code. Please note that you need to input the entire licensee string Giveawayoftheday.com (Giveaway) exactly as it is stated, INCLUDING the text in parentheses."

It would not register for me and said the code was invalid.

I've used Librevox for a few years now (I found it thro' the Gutenberg Project, which is the text-based version if you prefer to actually read print) and the books, altho' now out of copyright, are a wonderland library, especially the classic like Dickens, Defoe, R. L. Stevenson, Jules Verne, Shakespeare, Hans Christian Andersen, Jane Austen, Conan Doyle, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Mark Twain, H. G. Wells, Tolstoy, etc., etc.

The readers aren't always the best as they are unpaid volunteers but they do a damn good job for the love of it.

If you have a nice reading voice, you can offer your services to them, you may be able to improve on some of the less well read books. I don't like some (not all) of the womens voices, they can tend to be a bit too high pitched for my ears, I prefer deeper voices, they're more soothing.

I've downloaded this for one reason, the ability to pause and restart the downloads easily, that would be a handy feature rather than having to go to the website every time if I have to break off a download mid-stream.

I have downloaded books and selections from LibriVox over the years for myself, children and blind mother-in-law. LibriVox recordings are variable. This is a voluntary service, after all! Most I've downloaded are good. I think the software should be considered on it's usefulness, not on whether you like LibriVox.

Pro:
1. If you know the author or word from a title, it is a very quick search engine that is faster and more comprehensive than going to the website and entering your search request from there.

2. If you click on the 'Open the Audio Book page' - first icon on the app window, you will be taken to the associated LibriVox page. From there, you can download, listen to files, read intro info from LibriVox and download any CD covers they have made. The search list will give you all the alternative renditions of the book you are searching for, so you can choose, after listening to samples, what you want to download.

Con: Yes, each download is in it's own window, but if you only use the program for it's convenient search and retrieve capabilities if you are downloading more than one title, you can download from your favourite dl mgr from the web pages.

It is a keeper for me.

Does anyone know what the audiobooks are like, once they're downloaded?

I've tried a couple and the readers have been less than good, actor's, reading voices.

The software is quick to install and easy to use.

While the books on offer may not be to everyone's taste (you're not going to find a recent New York Times bestseller on a free download) there is a wide selection of classic and philosophical work. Authors include Austen, Bronte, Clausewitz, Dickens, Doyle, Kipling, Milne, Nietzsche, Plato, Shakespeare, Verne and Voltaire plus there are a number of short story collections to whet the appetite.

Downloads can be made in mp3 or ogg vorbis format and mp3 downloads convert easily into mp4 simply using iTunes, so putting audiobooks onto an iPod is easy.

This is a very useful piece of software and while it may be easy to pigeonhole its appeal to users such as students (why read a book when you can listen to it?) there is something for almost everyone here.

The only area I can see for improvement would be the ability to see new books as they become available rather than looking through the whole list, but overall I rate this piece of software very highly.

The Good
* Straightforward and easy to use.
* Allows users to download multiple audiobooks at once.
* Allows users to access the audiobook webpage for each audiobook.
* Allows users to easily play audiobooks after they have been downloaded, either using Angel's Vox audiobook player or the default player on the computer.
* Allows users to pause/resume downloads.
* Has a portable version.

The Bad
* Doesn't provide any value-added services: Users can just visit the Internet Archives audio catalog or Librivox grab their audiobooks just as easily.
* Doesn't allow users to download audiobooks in parts/sections/chapters.
* The download menus have a slight lag in appearing when they are called.

Audiobook Downloader Pro is a brilliant application – with its clean, easy to use interface, users will get familiar with using the program instantly. By linking to LibriVox.org, a provider of free audiobooks in the public domain, Audiobook Downloader Pro searches and brings up results instantly. Downloading audiobooks is a snap, with the ability to choose from various formats, and if you want more details, you can always open up the audiobook webpage. Some users may not like the audiobooks available – but all of them are free anyway. Overall, it’s a great program and has the potential to be even better in updates ahead.

Pros:
-Clean, straightforward, easy to use interface, customizable (to an extent)
-Searches extremely quickly, with search suggestions
-Provides multiple formats for downloading
-Provides a link to the audiobook page at LibriVox.org
-Pause, play, and open the folder of a downloaded audiobook
-Audiobooks are completely free!

Cons:
-No proper download manager (each download is a separate window)
-Book selection may not interest all users
-List could be more organized (with columns)

The full review for Audiobook Downloader Pro can be found here.
Enjoy!
