to dru (149):

sorry, I am now overcrowded with mails, so had no time to response you. And you have asked too much questions that can be answered in 5 minutes :)
> @140 Alex–Can the ability to resize the lefthand panes (e.g. folder and file explorers) be added to 1.50 or a future version?
This will probably not be changed for 1.50. I will do this only when I will switch GUI library (probably new MFC). This is planned, but not for 1.50. In 1.50 is still a lot of stuff need to be finished.

> @144 Alex–great idea to use %FileName% to run the current file. I also added %FileDir% to Initial Directory. And you’re too kind, I think it is reasonably obvious, in fact I tried something along those lines first but obviously got it wrong. Thx!
Normally it is not allowed to place tags into "command" field. They can be added only into arguments field. Except of some tags that can be used in commands field along. More details here: http://forum.hippoedit.com/?/topic,84.0.html

> @147 Alex–red tab text for modified files is indistinguishable from black text to me; I’m red/green colorblind. Can you add an option for an indicator (e.g. asterisk *) for folks like me who can’t recognize the red?
I got your point. Yes this can be added (generally it was some when removed) but as option. And not in main UI but as XML flag, because most of the people will not use it probably. Maybe later can be added to UI.

>Code Completion–Honestly, I like TextPad’s implementation of ClipLibraries much more because I can see the list and double-click what I want to insert.
> Control-space and typing through a small window takes longer and harder to browse. Can you make that into a pane?
Yes this is in plans as a plug-in. Even mentioned here: http://forum.hippoedit.com/?/topic,117.0.html. When do not know yet.

> Help File–”How to use regular expressions” is missing a reference to !, and last sentence appears to have a translation miscue (Russian version of “on”?).
Thanks! Will fix it in new 1.49 beta.

> Commenting Code–if I click somewhere in the middle of a line and drag down, then invoke Comment command, comment character(s) are inserted at the start
> of the text block, not at the start of the line that’s partially selected (a la Notepad++). Can this be fixed so that any line that’s partially selected is commented/uncommented (comment character inserted at start of line)?
No, because this is not a bug ;) This is by design. I think if you will select full lines you will get lines commenting. HE tries to distinguish what you want and applies corresponding action.
Some when HE had both as Line commenting as selection commenting. Then it was merged to one. What you can do is remove definition of selection commenting from specification of syntax you are using, in this case HE will use always line selection.

> (1) I’ve got an XML-type file that when I indent properly Notepad++ recognizes as structured and folds (=outlines). I can’t get HE to outline that file, the options are grayed out.
Outlining of the XML (as Python or indent based outlining). This was requested already long time ago, but I still have no time. Because HE does not have any hardcoded rules for syntaxes but always works based on syntax schema I need to define generic way to define such time of outlining and then implement it, and this requires significant time. So not yet done.

> (2) I need to learn how to edit syntax files; I work mostly with batch files and many commands (e.g. use in net use) are unrecognized as keywords. I like your post in the forum (http://forum.hippoedit.com/??topic=76.0) and it...
Try to use the information from post and other syntax schemes as examples. if you will have a question - ask on forum. I will help in a way I can. New syntax schema cost free full license: http://hippoedit.com/free_licensed_copy.php

@140 Alex--Can the ability to resize the lefthand panes (e.g. folder and file explorers) be added to 1.50 or a future version?

@144 Alex--great idea to use %FileName% to run the current file. I also added %FileDir% to Initial Directory. And you're too kind, I think it is reasonably obvious, in fact I tried something along those lines first but obviously got it wrong. Thx!

@147 Alex--red tab text for modified files is indistinguishable from black text to me; I'm red/green colorblind. Can you add an option for an indicator (e.g. asterisk *) for folks like me who can't recognize the red?

Code Completion--Honestly, I like TextPad's implementation of ClipLibraries much more because I can see the list and double-click what I want to insert. Control-space and typing through a small window takes longer and harder to browse. Can you make that into a pane? One thing I really love is it appears to be dynamic, recognizing items in the current file (e.g. in a map drives bat file I have Code Complete provided the computer names in the pop-up box).

Help File--"How to use regular expressions" is missing a reference to !, and last sentence appears to have a translation miscue (russian version of "on"?).

Comments--if I click somewhere in the middle of a line and drag down, then invoke Comment command, comment character(s) are inserted at the start of the text block, not at the start of the line that's partially selected (a la Notepad++). Can this be fixed so that any line that's partially selected is commented/uncommented (comment character inserted at start of line)?

Two concerns remain:
(1) I've got an XML-type file that when I indent properly Notepad++ recognizes as structured and folds (=outlines). I can't get HE to outline that file, the options are grayed out.
(2) I need to learn how to edit syntax files; I work mostly with batch files and many commands (e.g. use in net use) are unrecognized as keywords.

Interestingly, when I paste this comment into HE the @144 and @147 and Code lines are outlined.

to GW about macro/scripting and integration of source control:
I am planning to add integration of source control with plugins in 1.5x.
Some of them already can be used with HE because of their shell nature (shown in File Explore).

And about macro support: both as simple macro recording/replay planned (done in 1.50 dev version) as full scripting support (ActiveScripting). This is in progress in dev.

to GW once more, concerning 128: tools for projects
you can add as syntax based tools (for only one syntax or for all if added to Default syntax) or you can add tool to HE project itself (just select with context menu Add Tool), for case of project Shortcut to execute tool from it will work only if project is open. You can add also Help Urls to project with shortcuts.

in addition to what was suggested to you by dru (using tools for running programs) to get brief look and feel (blue background) just go to Tools->Options->"Color Schemes" and select Blue theme (or some other). It can be also adjusted.

And about suggestion of dru for running current file: there is an easier way, not very obvious :) Jsut place instead of command %FileName%. Than current file will be opened by default application (somewhere on forum was topic about this).

HippoEDIT tries to suggest only allowed keywords in the context (so where only tags allowed, only tags will be suggested), but it is not full blown HTML editor. All knowledge of syntax come from syntax definition for HTML. You can try it with Ctrl+Space. You can also define insertion pattern for every keyword/tag in xml (search in forum about this).
But probably what you need are code templates: there you can define shorthand (key) and pattern to which it should be expanded (with special buil-in tags, input fields available). It can be callable later or with agree on Code Hint with Tab/Enter or with explicit Ctrl+Enter or with Ctrl+Space on selected text (this useful for surrounding tags). There are bunch of tags templates for HTML available.

@128 GW--tools can be class-specific (e.g. batch files) or global; you can manage tools then show all syntax then drag'n'drop. I control-dragged to copy from one class to another. You can put a tool under Default to make it available to all docs. HTH.

as mentioned on later post by loz, settings.xml file created in the User Data folder after you first time save editor settings.
The forum topic about Condensed line numbers is correct, maybe loz did some mistakes by coping, do not know. And here condensed mean: not for every line. So changing to false should be correct. This setting is global. But visibility of line numbers at all, can be set for every syntax separately (or for syntax "families").

Just close internal browser window or open new file. The call File -> Open once more - it will open in text editor window.
This is by design, that file->open open file in the internal browser (for example for preview, although easier way exist with Preview in Browser) if any browser window is active (open in active tab).
But I see, that if only one browser window is open it can be confusing :/

RegEx search in forums to find a line not containing a string.

When opening files there's a visual indicator in status bar. Would be nice to have the same when saving files.

There's 200,000+ lines I need to delete. Multiple times. Is there a way to set a start point, search for a line that does not contain text, set a stop point, then delete the text between the start and stop points?

@Alex:

In the same vein as a hotkey to launch a make file (as per #125 & #128) it would also be good to provide a facility which can be customized to hook into our favourite source control package.

The only thing lacking which you mention is coming is the ability to create macro's. I am hoping that you mean permanent macros rather than just simple keystroke recording.

But again, this is one of the best I've seen in a very long time.

@126 loz--thanks so much, I found my settings.xml file, added the code form the forum and also the single line you mention, restart, HE crash, restart and now I'm seeing line numbers. Cool. Wow, a log file (VideoRedo) is 1615884. Just checked, it's 192MB. Time for some cleaning.

I first went to right-click on the tab looking for File Properties, then went to File menu. File properties might be a nice add to the tabs.

@127 Dru - Thank you for that I can make that work for me. I am guessing it is a global setting and not a per project setting so it is limited for some people but fortunately my batch file to build any and everything is the same name - makeit.bat

As a general comment, I am pretty excited about an editor for the first time in half a lifetime, who would have thought. I will keep testing it but so far its pretty hard to find anything to complain about at the moment and this is coming from someone that does NOT like IDE's / WYSIWYG editors at all.

@125 GW--You can run a file or batch file using the Tools feature. For example, I've created a Tool for batch files called RUN, and I've configured it to run the cmd.exe program with parameters /c "%FileName%". This runs the current file. I think it's a pretty slick feature.

Thank you Alex/HippoEDIT & GAOTD for this program! I downloaded an older version from here ages ago but lost it when I got a brand new machine a few months ago... very happy to get HippoEDIT from GAOTD again.

dru (#118) I thought the same as you (re: settings.xml), but found that after I'd actually gone into Tools/Options, then made & saved a change, the settings.xml file was created in the ... AppData\Roaming\HippoEDIT\data folder. Try it! I did, then added the code from that forum; I thought I'd added the code correctly, but still didn't get line numbers in *every* file I opened. However, I took a chance (can always delete it afterwards if the code's useless or wrong :D) & also added something else to the settings.xml file... now I get line numbers in my documents all the time, as I wanted! I'm so pleased :). What I added was the same code from that forum, *but* in the second addition I took out the word 'Condensed' from inside the tags (in the angle brackets), and changed 'false' to 'true'. No idea if that was a fluke or unnecessary somehow, but it worked so I'm glad.

I wanted to throw in some comments because I installed to my machine - win7 home premium, 64-bit - and had a few of the common problems mentioned today by others (specifically: program was unregistered even though I ran both setup.exe & activate.exe as administrator, and got the browser with 'successful activation'). In the end I uninstalled, then reinstalled - the part that allowed success, second time around, was leaving *all* install defaults exactly as originally offered. HE then opened as registered after I restarted (ran it as administrator for the very first time too, after successful activation).

I also wanted to leave another detailed comment, in case anyone else is having the same problem with win7/64-bit, with getting 'open with HippoEDIT' added to right-click menus. I downloaded the ShellReg64.zip offered in comments above, and replaced the originally-installed ShellReg.dll (in the HippoEDIT program folder) with the new 64-bit version. That didn't work though, and I spent about 2 hours trying to figure it out. In the end, below are the steps I ended up taking, in case anyone else has the same issues/problems that I had.

- I tried using regsvr32 to register the file, but got an error message; turned out I'd entered the path incorrectly (tip: regsvr32 doesn't work when the path has any spaces in it... ie, C:\Program Files (x86)\HippoEDIT\ShellReg.dll, as I entered it, was seen by windoze as C:\Program).
- I searched & got advice about opening the command prompt as administrator (duuuh); did that & tried again, entering the full path with quotes around it so windoze could read the path correctly. Got a new error message: "...ShellReg.dll was loaded but the call to DLLRegServer failed with error code 0x80070005".
- Googled the error number & came up with all sorts of advice about it being a permissions issue/error, usually solved by running CMD prompt as administrator. I had done that correctly though, so I wasn't sure what to do next.
- Longer story a *tad* shorter, I checked properties of the 64-bit ShellReg.dll & found a message there that windoze might be blocking the file because it had come from a different computer; I clicked the offered 'unblock' button - also made sure the file wasn't 'read only' - clicked 'apply'/'ok'.

Got the same error message when I tried using regsvr32 again *but* this time I (finally) thought to open & look at my Comodo; turns out Comodo Defense had treated the ShellReg.dll as suspicious so it was 'partially limited'. I moved it to trusted files, re-tried regsvr32 & it worked! Below is how I used regsvr32, in case anyone else has win7 & doesn't know how to do this:

- click 'Start' button & in the search box under 'All Programs', type the letters CMD.
- When Programs: CMD shows at top of the search, right-click on the CMD, then on the menu click 'Run as Administrator'.
- when the command prompt window opens, type the following (make sure you use the exact path to YOUR HippoEDIT folder though, since your install location could easily be different than mine):
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\HippoEDIT\ShellReg.dll" (remember to type those quote marks around the whole path too, if there are any spaces between words in your path!).
- press 'Enter'

If you've done it all correctly & the file isn't still being blocked somehow, you'll get a message that the file was successfully registered.

Oops, i do get chatty. Thanks again to Alex/HippoEDIT & GAOTD! Alex, big thanks for being here helping us with problems & answers :).

@Alex: Just wondering if there is a facility to get HippoEDIT to totally emulate the Brief editor. Not just keystrokes but also lets say a blue background with white text.

Also is there a way to set a hotkey so that a make file (or even a batch file) can be executed.

Overall I am liking this product after 20 years of using Brief you might actually get me to convert.
Leslie.

OK. Now that I've had a chance to use it, I have some positive suggestions. I was editing some straight HTML this afternoon and would suggest this.
When you highlight a section of text, you should be able to choose from a list what code or tags you want them enclosed in. There is a command that does this for a limited number of rare tags, but the one that has all the tags, simply deletes the selection.
Secondly, the list of tags in the drop down needs to be either arranged in some sort of groupings, or listed alphabetically, plus, it should allow for adding parameters to the tag, where appropriate. i.e , etc.

I thought IDE was an acronym for the disk drive interface developed by Western Digital called Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE). I cannot imagine how this program works as an interface to disk drives.

This program seems a bit buggy. My problem with the TXT file that wasn't editable disappeared when I used the program the third time. That time I had gotten rid of that pesky web page so my guess is that the editor opened the text file in the embedded Internet Explorer! And you can't edit any file in IE...

A sure fire way for me to get a "Hippoedit - Not Responding" in Task Manager is to use the Open command (be it by keyboard shortcut, menu item or button). As I am easily entertained I had some fun starting several new instances of Hippoedit and making them all "Not Responding". After a couple of minutes they all actually came back to life and produced the Open file dialog. So it works, one just has to be very patient. :)

It is always nice to have the developer here answering questions.

Hey, cool, thank you BuBBy! I'll look into creating syntax files. The post for line numbering is not longer current as there's no settings.xml. There's a settings.xlst and the structure looks a bit different from the forum post; not wanting to break anything I'll hold off making changes.

Also, I've got an XML file and created a syntax file for TextPad. In NotePad++ after fiddling with the indents outlining works like a champ. In HE Outlining is grayed out. Any ideas why?

When I try to open a php file using File>Open, it opens up a dialog box that appears to be the same dialog box as shown by Internet Explorer when you try to download a file. It gives the option to Open, Save and Cancel. If I choose Open it opens the file in Notepad. Nothing opens up in Hippo Edit. I wonder what's wrong in my setup?

1 - yes, you can create you own syntax files, embedding or inheriting existing schemes. Here you can find additional syntax files you can use as example. Here is FAQ post about how to create your own syntax. If you want extend existing schema with more standard keywords etc, better contact me and ask to add the changes to files in library that others also can use it. There is no UI for creating editing syntax schemes: these are xml files that you can edit directly.

2 - check this topic on HippoEDIT forum Displayng numbers of all the lines

it is good to see some companies will go above and beyond to help their users out ( and some companies give a rats azz about their customers after they get your money lol) and don't send us to twitter or facebook for support ( i preffer to not visit or sign up for either of them )

thanks again Alex on A JOB WELL DONE

Would be great if each tab had a close X to mimic how I've set up Firefox.

The more I look the more I like. Two questions:

1--I used to create and edit syntax files for TextPad. Can the same be done in HE? For example, in my batch file most of the commands are not highlighted/recognized. Is this feature found in the Code Templates?

2--I like line numbering but it only shows numbers for every 5th line. I've seen screen shots where every line has a number. I searched help. Can you set which lines display the line number?

Thank you. I hope time doesn't run out before the $15 special ends before hearing from you. Thank you for diligently responding to comments--superlative!

@Shah - Definition files should be placed in directory defined in Tools -> Options -> General -> Settings Path.
By default this is {HippoEDIT_InstallDir}\data\syntax.

I am surprised that it does not have php schema in it. I am trying to make it recognize php syntax. I have downloaded the php files from the link provided here, but I cannot figure out where to copy the files. Any help will be appreciated.

FINALLY...I used to use CodeWrite *alot* in my "younger" years and really loved the COLUMN COPY/PASTE capability. At first glance, this editor seems to have alot of very nice capabilities. Installed with out problems on my 64-bit version of Win7.

try solution from Rob (101), maybe this will help. Otherwise I do not know - it is too less information to give better advice :/
