This was nice while it lasted! I hadn't used it since early November, and just tried, and am getting the same trial version issues. Had this been resolved?

Sticky Password seems to have auto corrected. It unlocked by itself allowing me to change the password. Oooh well.

This program was asking me for the registration code. I copied and pasted the code that appears on the 2nd comment. Works fine.

Same issue others have mentioned. The program installed fine and said that registration was successful. Next day, get the message that it's a 5-minute trial version. I deleted the older, WORKING version for this? Bummer.

Like everybody else it seems that this software has reverted to a trial version after a couple of days :(

If anyone knows how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated!

November 3rd and mine is saying it is trial also. I usually come back to look at comments a couple days after a GiveAway to see if anyone had something to add after the fact. I was surprised to see people that lost activation, then even more surprised when I checked mine and found the same issue.

Installed and activated on a windows 7 32 bit system. Two days later when I started the program, it was no longer activated, but was a trial version.
A big disappointment. I will be uninstalling it later tonight.

This program is extremely frustrating. It is incredibly slow when copying, it will not copy the file structure of the source DVD, even using the 'COPY' mode, and running the resulting single MPEG file (in COPY mode) is jerky making the movie impossible to watch. My system is WinXP SP3, 3GHz CPU, 2GB DRAM, has DMA set 'on' and is not slow! In all other such programs I've tried the results are least capable of being watched. This one is NOT!

I downloaded this and used it repeatedly with much success. Today (Nov. 2,2010 at 1700hrs) I get a message stating that I have the trial version!! Coincidentally, there is another GOTD download which seems to be not working. Sticky Password was offered last week. It worked great, but now my master password doesn't work. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?

I installed and registered this on the giveaway day and it hs been working fine. But today it now asks for the registration code again and will not accept the giveway code as per the readme. If I reset the system clock back to 1st November all is fine.

Does anyone else have this problem ?

Most curious:
1. I had a previous version. This version registered automatically--I didn't need to use the new key. (The new version installed over the old one.)
2. If you "Check for new version," you will find that this version is a newer build.

I have Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Dowloaded successfully and tried to rip a non-protected PAL DVD. The program crashed, advised to use SAFE mode and crashed again. I emailed the log file to the company. I looked at the files and the ones that seemed to have been ripped successfully had sound but no video.

Instead of blindly leading people to an alternate offer and misleading everyone, you should have read fully on the Softpedia offer that you pitch!

On the offer page you can see all there is about the giveaway including its added "limitations" that are not in the GOTD version.

Here is a copy of these lifted from the page you point to:

"WinX DVD Ripper Platinum [GIVEAWAY]":

Limitations:

· 5 minutes conversion limit
· Nag screen

So now, based of the 23 positive votes at the moment I write this), you have probably misleaded some people that will have to live with those limitations.

Lets just hope they find their way back here to get the GOTD version before it's too late.

Next time, read till the end of any comparable giveaway page and check the limitations before pluging a limited version.

Downloaded OK.

Installed OK, with the help of the comments here to find the "ok"-button.

But after activating, the program started INTERNET EXPLORER to promote its producers.

Hey, guys... It is NOT that hard to open MY USUAL WEB BROWSING PROGRAM!

If I was trying to be funny, I would say something like "if that is the level of programming you are capable of, I am not sure your program is able to rip the DVD in my DVD-tray, I would expect it to rip my photos from my mobile phone instead". I mean... come on... the only reason for you to NOT program this "use the default web browser" would be to be 1. Lazy or 2. Paid by Microsoft.

As I am not trying to be funny, I'll just say "thank you" for the program, and do some testing of this software along with the other 5 rippers I have, later on.

As usual, great job GAOTD-team.

I just installed this software and it installed without any problems what-so-ever. Activation was just as easy. I did copy and paste the activation code into the required box and as soon as that was done it was activated. No freezes as some seem to have had when completing this step. It is located in the start/programs section of my pc (unlike comment #60 who states that it doesn't seem to be on their computer. (running windows Vista home premium)

Haven't tried it just yet since I just don't have the time to do so right now. But will as soon as I get some free time.

During the registration / installation process a box popped up for WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe - All-in-one HD Video Converting Solution to download and install for free and I got that one too!

Would like to have the option of the interface coming up with the same selection of tab and settings (Save your favorite settings or create a custom profile that you select to startup every time).

I use the same selection 90% of the time. It is a time waster to go through all the steps each time.

Also want to be able to lock in video resolution settings.

I would like the tab that is selected to be light up in some way (radio button lit up or something to indicate it is selected).

Thanks you have a great product!

I uninstalled WinX DVD Ripper Platinum 5.9.2 (a previous GiveAwayOfTheDay) to see how the new version performed. There does seem to be some improvement overall. DivX takes some power, and H.264 even more, so the times to convert to those does take longer than a straight copy rip, but the conversions seemed a bit snappier. I didn't do a before and after compare of the same material, however.

I do like the ability to right-click on the individual titles on a DVD and set up edits before ripping. The previous version was a little trickier to use in this regard, so I would have usually had to rip one title at a time. By the way, the source I'm ripping is TV shows recorded to DVD-RW off a satellite receiver, so I tend to have multiple shows on one DVD.

The one problem (bug) that I ran into is that under certain circumstances, trying to use the Copy function to directly rip without conversion has been broken. Once the progress reaches 100%, the ripping continues until the end of the DVD, and if multiple titles are selected, each one will rip to the end of the DVD. However, if using any of the conversion functions, it does appear to work. The workaround to avoid this bug is to set the End Time back just a few seconds, so it seems the bug has something to do with calculating the correct end of the title.

Overall, I like the changes, both subtle and obvious. Thanks again, Digiarty for giving us a shot at getting this (and the WinX HD Converter) for free.

#4: "... It has the ability to use all the cpu cores available in your computer… As a result, I was able to fully backup a whole dvd in less than 3 minutes..."

#12: "... In all my years I’ve never come across a ripper that can do a whole movie in 3 mins..."

Yes, 3 minutes (or less) is 'bout right if you're just using the Copy tab in WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, *IF* the DVD is a 3-4 GB single layered affair & has been copied to your hard drive already. There's no encoding going on, no need for CPU horsepower, no nothing really but copying the mpg2 & Ac3 streams to another file [large files, say 7+ GB worth, just take twice as long]. Likewise copying a complete DVD from one hard drive folder to another takes a similar amount of time & resources. Speed copying from an optical disc depends on how fast your drive can read it, & if the drive's got copy speed limits or not etc.

Note that the Copy option in today's GOTD does not copy everything -- for that you'd want Shrink. Note also that if you do more than copy, if you transcode the video &/or audio to something else, &/or re-size it, that stuff does use horsepower & can take some time, though how much or how little depends on exactly what you're doing.

* * *

#5: "... can anyone suggest where a newbie can go to learn about “Audio Sample Rates,” “Video Frame Rates,” etc., and how to better use them?..."

RE: Audio Sample Rates etc... *If/When* you're going to do any editing -- you lose quality during conversion, so you don't want your hard or software making conversions behind the scenes -- IOW you want 48/16 (or whatever you're using) to stay that way start to finish, including temp files. Since you do lose quality during any sample rate conversion, you can avoid that loss by sticking with the original sample rates [generally 48/16 for DVD], even if it seems overkill for your destination, e.g. a hand-held. When you do down-sample (usually to have a smaller audio file), if you want better audio use an app that uses dithering as part of the process. And in a nutshell, the lower the sample rate & bit depth the smaller the file.

RE: FPS [Frames Per Second]... Generally you can double the existing fps, meaning every frame's shown twice, which in some cases can make it *seem* to look better, e.g. cartoons are often originally around 12 fps & doubled. Small web video featuring talking heads has been traditionally cut down to 12-15 fps because size was more important than quality -- cutting fps = tossing frames = smaller size = lower quality. If that makes sense, it's because I haven't mentioned TV or TV standards. NTSC TV = 29.976 fps -- PAL = 25fps -- film = 24 fps -- digitized film content is often 23.976, which is *more-or-less* interchangeable with 24 fps. It's *very* difficult to change 29.976 to 24 or 25 fps (generally use hardware & wave theory), but it's easy to go in the opposite direction, using special formulas to repeat fields [1 field = 1/2 frame]. Removing those *added* fields is called Inverse Telecine [IVT], which you'll see in all sorts of encoders/converters. Note results vary, sometimes a LOT.

DVDs though can be special. 24 fps progressive frames can have *pull-down* added to = 29.976 fps NTSC -- this means repeating frames, but importantly, no extra frames are really included, just the 24 fps frames + directions telling the decoder to repeat which frames in what order. So *if/when* DVD video is 24p w/pulldown, you can dump the extra instructions & just use the 24 fps video as is, & indeed that's preferred. The problem is as always in the details -- some DVD video really is 29.976 fps, & if you try to use it as anything but 29.976 fps video you'll have problems &/or poor results.

* * *

#40: "I downloaded this last week..."

Today's GOTD is Slightly newer.

* * *

#44: "... one thing i would like to see is a in the help file, something explaining what formats are good for what, and generally teaches you about how to maximize use for purposes… "

There are so many devices & it can get so complicated that I'm not aware of any *one* place on-line (let alone one doc) that has it all. Best bet is to start with devices you own &/or want to work with, then research them individually. Then as you start learning the "finer" points, you can start experimenting with things like matrices etc., *if* you want to. If it helps, currently the formats getting attention (including HD) are AVC/H264, Google's WebM, & VC1. Mpg2 is still in the game [HD broadcast], as is DivX with their latest push to HD. All have their pros/cons, e.g. you can encode mpg2 faster, work with it easier, but for a given quality have bigger files than VC1, which is horrible to work with, & like AVC slow to encode.

* * *

#46: "... I’ve ripped one DVD successfully and another that lost sound or just froze after 5 minutes into playing..."

Many (alas myself included) tend to think of *ripping* as bypassing DRM -- that isn't necessarily the case, At All... WinX DVD Ripper Plat. is a converter that can *read* DVDs, so you don't have to worry about extracting the right files or combining .VOB files or any of that. There can be a LOT of reasons for losing audio or video freezing -- 1 common cause is a DVD that's purposely broken as a means of DRM... in many cases the *only* alternative is to use specialized apps like those from DVDFab &/or SlySoft. It's a cat & mouse game where DVDs & BDs continually evolve using new DRM, & those 2 companies constantly release new versions to counter it.

Hector @ #4: I'm not sure what's the more hilarious, your spectacularly daft -- and clearly fictitious -- post, or the number of positive thanks you've got from the gullible on here. If you must waste GOTD's space and everyone's time, you might try next time to be a bit more credible.

Re today's offering. Like others, I DL'd it last week from the developer's site and it works as described on the tin. Digiarty promises some kind of 'new' engine; whatever the reason, it certainly ran faster than my other similar apps. Then again though, speed isn't always everything (and definitely not at the burning stage, when you've finished using today's GOTD.)

There's definitely a learning curve but it's reasonably quick to master by being methodical, whilst getting to grips with the settings is a damn sight easier here than it was for those of us who had to learn the hard way about such stuff through Windows Profiles and its editing process. And compared to earlier versions of this software, there are substantial improvements: the older format restrictions have gone.

Well done, Digiarty, and well done, GOTD.

Installed on W7 64 bit, copy and pasted key , it hung on activation as other have reported, killed the task and opened the program, it was registered successfully. Nice easy to use software, no reports from two different PCs AV programs, MSE and AVG Corporate v9.0.864.

Rip and encoding a DVD on my old Dell D600 laptop right now, is doing it fairly fast for this old 1.8mhz single core lappy, about 35 minutes.

WinX DVD is a fantastic, lightning fast DVD ripper. Nothing compares to it in speed and quality in my experience when ripping to AVI. It's weakness is it sometimes has difficulty identifying the proper title on some of the new copy protection schemes where DVDfab can (although it can take a while for it to complete the needed analysis.)

So the two things I'd improve are:
1) properly identifying the main title on newer protection schemes
2) I would love a way to trim the output. For example, if I could trim off the opening and closing credits withing WinX it would save me a lot of time. Right now, I have to use a sepearate program to trim-up the output
3) I sure wish it could burn its AVI output to a standard DVD for playing on a standard DVD. I think its sister program dedicated to conversion can do it. Ihope for the day when thesetwo programs get merged. Then you'd have one of the best apps on the planet for dealing with all your video ripping and conversion needs.

All and all, WinX DVD is my favorite DVD ripper hands down. I can't imagine being without it! I recommend every chance I get and write reviews like this because, it's just that good!

Operating System: WIN7 Ultimate

Excellent Choice if you need it. So many features to choose from, but you have to at least try it before you know it's capabilities.

It Rips individual Titles in Real Time, so you can "Guess-timate" the time needed.

I noticed some of the suggestions above; such as:

"Ability to add Subtitles" --- Look again it allows this. Just make the selection for each Title!

"Allow Skins" --- Why? It rips DVDS?

"Isolate Chapters" --- Every Title on the DVD is visible, so burning it with a separate software package for DVD creation allowing Chapter Creation is what you want. It RIPS.

"Resizing ability" --- It allows this!
So why recommend what hasn't been even tried or tested? Are you wanting a Free Lifetime License!

"Note that top 10 improvement ideas will be rewarded with free lifetime upgrades"

I know the above points may seem negative, but this is a very good tool, so be happy if you actually try it to see what it's capable of, after all it is for FREE from Giveaway of the Day, so it didn't cost you a dime as it is.

P.S. I made no suggestion as of Yet...Time eventually runs out for the voting on suggestions, so I will likely get nothing posted there because I will actually test it 1st..

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is a nice, easy to use, fast video converter that only accepts video DVD input -- it will read DVD on discs or in folders on your hard drive(s), but not individual audio/video file(s). It allows you to trim [set in/out points] &/or crop your video, but doesn't have other editing features that can be found in some converters, like setting contrast, brightness, &/or FX. Like most converters it has the option to take subtitles in the DVD & make them permanent -- permanent subtitles are overlaid & encoded as part of the video, vs. switchable subs that can be turned on/off (like on the orig. DVD). The big news with WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is that in many cases you can keep & use the original audio, including 5.1 (6 channel) AC3, & it can also output 6 channel AAC.

Most video rippers &/or converters use output profiles -- templates or presets of encoder settings that work with the target devices [using the right combo of encoder options/settings can get pretty complicated, so for most people profiles are a very good thing]. OTOH selecting & managing a large selection of profiles can too often be confusing... Digiarty uses a different sort of GUI design with WinX DVD Ripper Platinum to make selecting & working with profiles much more straightforward -- you have 2 rows of tabs, 1 for video format [avi, mp4 etc.], the other for devices [iPod, iPad etc.]. Each tab has its own range of profiles, settings, & possible customizations, plus by clicking the Option button up top, you can save changes you've made to an existing profile. On the down side, while Digiarty's use of tabs can be less confusing, they take up space, and only so many can fit comfortably across the program window -- this means you have fewer device profiles [e.g. no Droid].

Using WinX DVD Ripper Platinum... The 1st step is to point the app to your DVD disc or folder -- it'll then read the DVD, putting the titles it finds in a job list. Double clicking a title starts it playing in the small preview window, while 2 boxes beneath the preview let you set start/stop times -- right clicking the title (in the title list) you can also trim &/or crop the video in a separate window with a larger preview. Note that video besides titles may be included in the title list (menus for example) -- normally with the preview & the video info given you shouldn't have much of a problem selecting just the title you want, But, with DVDs designed for DRM rather than function [many DVDs are intentionally broken], you may sometimes want or need to copy the DVD using DVD Shrink's re-author mode, getting a 2nd DVD folder with just the title you want, nothing else. Once you've selected the title in WinX DVD Ripper Plat, you select which tracks you want [audio & opt. subtitle] using the drop down boxes below the title list -- note that choosing a subtitle means it will be permanently added to the results. The rest is a matter of picking a destination, then choosing a profile tab & tailoring the output to what you want/need. [Tip: most DVD drives come with a speed limit to discourage copying -- check out "Media Code Speed Edit", a free app to remove that limit]

Installation is very close to painless -- a folder is added under User Application Data in XP, or under User \ AppData \ Roaming in 7, plus you get Start Menu shortcuts, & the program's folder itself [17 files, 2 folders, ~33 MB] -- Windows' registry gets an uninstall key. Using Portable App Creator I was easily able to get it working off a USB stick.

Running some quick test on WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, I'm impressed. H264/AVC encoding is *maybe* 10 fps faster than average compared to other converters/rippers. And it doesn't seem they got that increase by just reducing quality settings either -- the results look good, like they're supposed to. ;-) [Most encoders have a range of quality settings, often including number of encoding passes, & for the most part quality & speed are mutually exclusive -- IOW some apps are fast because they just turn quality down a few notches.] The Copy DVD tab/option should come in very handy (ironically?) when/if you want to use another app for conversion/transcoding etc... a great many video apps Will Not take separate audio & video, but most free tools give you just that, individual video & audio files from a DVD [e.g. PgcDemux]. Very quickly copying mpg2 video & AC3 audio from a DVD into a single .mpg file is nice to have. Definitely a keeper, my only request ATM -> boosting CUDA's fine, but please don't forget ATI's Stream... after all, stats say ATI sells more cards/chips than nVidea.

Downloaded and installed on Win 7/32 no problem except as HarryM and Ed said (# 1 & 2 - Thanks guys for the heads up!) after cut and paste of the code I had to close with task manager. Activation showed OK on restart. - Tried to COPY a store bought video disk and it loaded on my computer to a file folder I specified with video and no sound. 3 different 'players' and no sound? Not sure if I missed something or not. - - - I realize this is a 'disk ripper' but, once again unless I missed something, I was expecting it to also be able to burn onto a clean disk that which it 'ripped'. Disappointed about that and if it does can someone please tell me how?

One complaint I have as was said above in the 'How would you improve this' window above is the program's window does not resize and some of the text is on top of one another making it unreadable. I've the same problem with WinX DVD Copy given away here a while back. (Which I love and use most often for disk copies)

Thanks Digiarty, I'll be trying more things with this but I do wish you would fix the resizing of windows.

Since most of us have the previous giveaway from them, do you need to uninstall the previous version or can you just install this one without having to do an uninstall?

I believe this program has been given away before. It's an okay program: I've ripped one DVD successfully and another that lost sound or just froze after 5 minutes into playing. Hopefully this new software coding will improve it.

Other than that, this is a good program.

install was fine, didn't want game informer though... so i didn't click get that...
had 5.63 or some other previous version that started with 5, it worked well.

DVD software tends to expire quickly.

The reason is the protection software keeps changing. my solution for making dvds was originally VLC media player, because it had an option to stream the movie to a file as it played. and it was always up to date on playing movies.

but this program easily ripped how to train your dragon, and was simple to use. i turned the quality up to 2000 for wmv and upped the sound 192 and it ended up being 1 gig and a half, small enough to fit on my flashdrive. then it played on xbox 360 fine.

when encoding videos, its usually difficult to figure out what combo of video/sound encoding to use under a container format, but this one didnt make me figure that out. im sure that there will be copy protection that breaks up the main movie into small titles, or causes problems in the future, but it seems this program will find a way to overcome it. But for now, this works. and that is impressive with the constantly changing dvd copy protection.

it told me what the checkmark boxes did as well. that was good.

one thing i would like to see is a in the help file, something explaining what formats are good for what, and generally teaches you about how to maximize use for purposes... like say you want to make a movie that will play on the wii, you can use formats it already supports, you just have to know which ones.(i dont know why you would want to play it on the wii of all things.)

I tried it, looked good ,then took 1hour and 30 minutes to rip a dvd on my system(windows xp pro sp3/Pentium 4 processor/3.20GHz/1.0GB RAM) I can watch the dvd and record it with VLC media player(free by the way) at the same time. this software hogs the cpu.the other rippers I have do not.I can surf the internet when using the others but can not do that with this one.takes a long time to load after splash screen,(around 45 seconds.)that is slow in my books.the quality is the same as any other dvd ripper.I find this slow, and nothing special about it. just uninstalled. I do not use cpu hogs. oh ya it decided it wanted more resources to run so it,not me ,shut down my process lasso.who gave this software admin rights on my system? I never. very displeased.very suspicious behavior.
thanks GOTD but no thanks

Does this software co-exist with installed DVD recorder software or does it over-write and replace the installed DVD recorder in XP computers/laptops?

Will this allow you to copy and back up DRM protected commercial DVDs?
