If you get a message saying unable to connect, the problem most likely is your firewall. Try logging out and logging in again. I often face this problem with my Agnitum firewall suddenly deciding to block all outgoing connections.

The moment you install it, it tries to charge you. This is a case of bait and switch. If it's free it should be free. Don't give something and ask for payment the moment you install it. This has left and unsavory taste in my mouth about this company so any further products they put out I will refrain from using or buying.

Actually, it appears that you CAN turn off updates. Options/Settings.../Advanced/ down toward the bottom, just un-check Auto check new version.

I keep getting a nagware pop-up telling me to purchase an update.....even when I am not using the program. There is even a tacky icon of a hand out taking your money. Outlook if a far better program if I am going to purchase an email client.

I can't find any clear instructions as to how to integrate an existing email account with this.

I will stick with Firefox's free Thunderbird. It's the #1 free alternative to Outlook.

I installed this over a previous version that I'd forgotten was there, and it picked up all of my task from that version.

In "Settings -> Advanced" I unchecked the boxes for "Auto check new version" and "Automatic synchronization with the server", both near the end of the list.

Thanks again, GOTD. I love this program.

Simple way to set the colors: Options menu, click priorities, select each priority, and change the colors and font style. Program works like a champ on Win 7 Pro x64. Comments make it easy to link to specific URLS or files, which is a must for me.

OOPS! Sorry. Email got added in this version, just a few weeks ago. So IMAP does matter to some. They are still missing out.

I'm not going to use LT for my real email until I test it to find out if the email files are separate from the task database. LT does daily backups of the task database. I don't want my email included in that because my laptop disk is already pretty full and it does not have any place to add a second hard drive. And I'm a long way from Zero Inbox.

There have only been a few questions about email setup on the forum so far, so with the time difference to Russia, I probably won't have an answer today.

Like I said, I've been using it happily for two years without the email feature.

Comment by Howard Mckinley @ No 38 "When I try to open the program says unknown format or damaged file
I would realy like to have thi program.
Can you help ?"

Hi Howard - I'll Give it a go . . .
Firstly - Which OS are you using XP / Vista or Seven ?
Secondly - you say when you open the PROGRAM- do you mean -
A: The .Zip File that downloaded from GAOTD Site ?
B: The Setup File contained within the previously mentioned .Zip File ?
C: Having FULLY INSTALLED the software - you are struggling to RUN THE SOFTWARE ?
On an educated guess of Windows 'Error Dialogues' I'm thinking that it's A: - The .Zip file isn't working.
This can be caused in numerous ways.

Firstly - rather than relying on Windows "Built In" Downloader - I'd suggest getting a Downloader / Accelerator as these tend to remove the guess work as to wheather a file has completely downloaded & is "Ready For Action"
- I use Free Download Manager - As the name suggests - IT'S FREE !
Secondly - rather than relying on Windows "Built In" .Zip Support - I'd suggest geting a specific sotware to do that for you also. There are loads about
- I use WinRar - This one's Shareware ! This will be able to test the file for faults etc. before you extract etc.

Finally - be sure that your Firewall / AntiVirus software etc. is not blocking the file from running. Because of the way GAOTD compile their Setup Wrapper program - it gets caught be several AntiVirus softwares as a VIRUS - Obviously IT'S NOT & NEVER HAS BEEN - but IF your AntiVirus has run ahead of you - ( Files are scanned in Explorer BEFORE they appear on screen ) - then it may well have Lodked the .Zip from running because of the suspected virus contained within - AntiVirus softwares are programed to do that BUT it's a pain when it's a FAULSE POSITIVE !!!

IF the solutions I've offered so far do not cure your situation - you can post back - it's 19:40 here in the UK - I'll be watching the posts for a fdew hours yet - Off & On - so I may not see any post for a while.

IF I CAN HELP YOU – OR – ANY OTHER GAOTD USERS – I WILL TRY</b - Even After Closing !!!!

I hope this has been helpful for some of you :o)

Cheers for now :o)

I have been using LeaderTask for a couple of years now, starting with a previous GOTD offer.

I'm HOOKED. I use it every day. It's on automatic startup at boot.

IMAP is a NON-issue. Those who looked no further have missed out. LT is NOT an email app. It's a very good project organizer.

It's "Outlook Support" is for calendar and tasks, not email. Unfortunately, that is not made clear to prospective users, but part of the blame is on Microsoft for the term "Outlook" being ambiguous.

Outlook drove me crazy because its Task List is just a list, no tree structure. If your day is not structured around your meeting schedule, if you have lots of projects you are working on, many in the background, Outlook is a very poor choice.

LeaderTask has MULTIPLE LAYERS of organization. Projects, sub-projects, tasks, sub-tasks, and you can look sideways at all of that by having categories that are independent of the project structure. Phone Calls. Errands. Reading.

A KEY FEATURE that they don't mention: A single task can be in multiple projects. The implications of that don't become clear until you have been using LT for a while. It provides truly AWESOME flexibility.

The colors are a bit odd, but you can manually change the colors, just right-click on a project name (in the project list, in the project name on an individual task view, anywhere you see the project name, just right-click). You have access to the full Windows color palette. You can make every task a different shade of grey if that's you're style. But you can't define a whole designer color palette like the newer Word and PowerPoint. Gee.

It updates on-the-fly so if you open a task and add notes, there is no such thing as forgetting to save them. It's pretty much keystroke by keystroke, without a lot of system overhead.

The developers are among the most response of any software I have ever used. That is AWESOME. In two years of heavy use, several of my suggests have been incorporated into the product, sometimes in a matter of a week or so. Serious bugs get POUNCED on.

If the color palette issue is important to you, I bet if you did the design work, figured out what the interface would have to look like and came up with some nice, harmonious color combinations the way MS Word has its Themes, they'd build it for you. They are very into making this a great piece of software, but they are just a bunch of engineers and their budget is tight.

They also have a VERY GENEROUS way of getting a free license. Contribute to the user forum. Use the product, ask questions, help other new users, and they will give it to you. If you don't have time for that, it's not expensive. I love that philosophy.

The only drawbacks to the entire product, including the user forum, is that it is a small company, so they don't have dedicated user help writers, and they are Russian, so sometimes they just don't understand what a user is trying to say when they are describing a problem or a desired feature.

For a product that works really well, the best of its class that I have found, that's not a problem for me.

I hope this helps, and I look forward to seeing some of you in the LeaderTask Forum.

As a web developer, I think this is very good for project management. I have been using Memoranda which is free but buggy. This seems really nicely thought out with plenty of options, but not so many that it becomes overly complicated.

What would make this a really complete solution for Web Development (or anyone tracking billable hours on a project) would be to have a project time tracking and invoicing tool similar to Simple Task Timer.

I won't be using it for email if it doesn't support IMAP.

It would be really nice if I could import contacts from Thunderbird.

Also if I understand correctly, I can import an iCal calendar from Google Calendars but I can not sync from TaskLeader to Google Calendar.

Thanks for the nice program!

#3: "I’m expecting a, “no”, but will this program sync with iphone calendar by any chance?"

I think you'd have to go the route of syncing both Leadertask & your iPhone [Android cell etc] with something like a network/on-line calendar.

* * *

#17: "Is there a way to get rid of notice on title bar “Period of free updates has expired”"

I'd like to think Almeza put that there as a reminder -- several others have commented that they don't like going for updates that don't work or break the app, and that notice is rather hard to miss. That said, if you absolutely loath that message, you ***might*** try swapping those files with different dates than the trial version, one at a time, & it may or may not work (there are only 5). And/Or, there are apps available that can sometimes make limited changes to an .exe or .dll file -- again you might/might not be able to get rid of the notice.

#28: "... Since a current newer version has been out for about a year, I assume the company already spent time working out some bugs for improvement."

If it helps, the change log for 6.9.5.3 posted in their forums is dated August 27, 2010. Latest files in today's GOTD (6.9.6) are 10/4/10. Latest files in their current trial download (6.9.7) are 10/8/10. Almeza Probably had to get their GOTD version ready ahead of time to be put in the GOTD wrapper & tested -- wouldn't do for the developers of Task Mgmt software to be late :-) -- so we missed Friday's, likely minor update. IMHO not a huge deal anyway.

In the past Leadertask has been a fairly popular download with it's Love it or Hate it colorful GUI -- I'm a bit surprised they haven't added skinning support [if nothing else it might boost their forum participation]. Almeza isn't real good about posting change logs, but the latest I saw (6.9.5.3) is here: http://goo.gl/3KRc. A couple of quick notes, the Leadertask Readme.txt shows: "Windows 2000, XP, 2003 Server, Vista", & while the Leadertask home page says it's Portable, it doesn't meet everyone's definition of the word, i.e. it does not need installed, but it does add registry entries when run [I haven't tried with this release yet, but in the past I was able to convert Leadertask to the PortableApps.com format with Portable App Creator to stop that]. If you do use it, backup (zip) the program's folder & store it somewhere safe -- that way you don't have to worry about losing everything since the GOTD setup wrapper only works today.

Leadertask comes in a regular version, as well as one for PDAs & one for servers, & as others have noted, the included key doesn't work with anything but today's GTOD download. Again as others have noted, there is no support for smartphones. Help is only available on-line -- I think new users would appreciate it if at Almeza also made it available as at least a pdf. Otherwise it's easy to use, IMHO fitting in between Outlook & apps like Rainlendar [http://goo.gl/xZzg] (free & payware versions). Leadertask *might* be a better choice for some people compared to the new Windows' Live Essentials, if/when you want to take it with you [e.g. on a USB stick] & don't want to be dependent on on-line access. Task Coach is another free alternative with portability & iPhone/iPad as well as Windows, Mac, & Linux versions [taskcoach.org].

I have just downloaded the leader task. Bravo, I love it thanx to giveaway of the day.

I have briefly been reviewing the comparision to outlook which I currently use, and Leader Task contains some really nice features.

1.Creates a backup when closing
2.Develops reports
3.Birthday reminder
4.Can enter in a mind map (which I use extensively to develop projects)
5.Develop and delegate projects when I might be outsourcing or working with affiliates of my projects.
6.One of the biggest pluses is both business and personal organization.

Over all I find that this software program will help me and in this instance probably will purchase the version to get updates.
When you find a program that will help you in your business life and personal life buy it. You will reduce the stress in your life and organize.

GAOTD has been for opinions of new software, but not today. It is older version software that you need to pay $40 if you would like the updates. Since a current newer version has been out for about a year, I assume the company already spent time working out some bugs for improvement.

With all software from giveaway of the day I automatically uncheck run program or start program from setup unless it specifically tells you to run it first. always read the read me file first. and then find and disable the automatic check for updates if it has one. As for this one I don't think I need it. I have Outlook and barely use its features now.

Outlook Users:
Just looking though their website, here are a few things that jumped out for me:

* Lightweight project management. Being able to arrange tasks in trees, e.g., by project, is the main reason I'm trying it. Yes, you can sort of do it with categories for one level, but this is more user friendly.

* Lightweight document management. Yes, you can stick doc's into outlook records. But, that means there's no central location that you can go to, if you want to browse through them. Also, Outlook does not give you a way to add links to documents, if you do want to store them outside of Outlook.

* The corporate version does most of the sharing stuff that Outlook Exchange Server does, for a very small fraction of the price.

Two major fails:

* No IMAP.

* No RIM, Android, or Apple clients. (Wake up TaskLeader - this is killing you.)

Thanks Mike #19 Mac's-PC - Good description of some of the inner workings of GOTD. - One thing that could be added to that is that some of the programs might have "automatic update" turned on when we download and register it. They do the auto-update and leave one with a 'trial version' which quickly demands payment (in 15-30 days/10 uses/whatever) to register & work again.

I've lost a few "free" programs this way and it really is irritating. I've yet to buy the program when this is pulled on me because I'm so ticked that the developer would do this without warning. Sometimes a kind commenter will mention it here on GOTD, sometimes not. Just something to be aware of and to watch for.

I appreciate he developers putting in bold letters the statement, "Please note that commercial usage is possible for this title."

I see that it syncs with the Google Calendar. Since the Android phones have built-in sync'ing with the Google Calendar and contacts, I presume that Android Calendar to the Leadertask Calendar sync'ing is taken care of. Has anyone checked this ?
Does this sync extend to the Google contacts also?

Suggestion to GAOTD
as with many other software, this one has been offered before ( I have 6.9.2 ). And ALWAYS, there is that doubt : can I install it on top of the previous version without uninstalling it first one or not? Maybe you could post a simple note on all re-running titles specifying how to deal with the previous version. That would be a much awaited improvement.
thank you in advance.

Comment by Michael @ No.8 "I haven’t played with yet, but I went to Help => update and wont update.
The current version is: 6.9.6. A new version is: 6.9.7. It wont update because it says: The period of free updates has expired. Then it suggests to buy updates.
HMMM – How come? Have you tried to update yours? And have you come to the same problem as mine?"

Michael - I'm guessing you are fairly new to GAOTD because it's been a standard rule for years that UPDATES ARE NOT NORMALLY INCLUDED - unless specifically offered by publisher !
More often than not - the software has been altered to allow for the exclusive use of the GAOTD Unique License - meaning that the license could not be inserted into a newer version. As a result - updating even once can re-write the program's GAOTD Licence & as a result - it becomes a trial version again. There HAVE BEEN A FEW instances where the key / licence has allowed updates / worked with updated eleases BUT this is NOT THE NORM !!!
- [ he's on Cheers ! :o) ] - Those were the days - er - sorry.
Personally - IF you are intent on updating each giveaway - I'd take a snapshot in Windows - coz you're likely to go through a lot of licences & rolling back is pretty much your only bet ! - ( or at least restoreing the licesnce in the Windows Registry - if you know how. )

Comment by fab @ 12 "Did I understand right, that this is an old version of the program? Because the program offers me to pay for the update to the version 6.9.7.
If I understood right, they sell now the version 6.9.7. So the price $45.95 is for the version 6.9.7, not for 6.9.6."

This too is common practice - a company offers it's previous version as it releases it's new version on it's own site. - Remember - This company is GIVING AWAY FOR FREE as many licences as we download - it does this in order to promote itself in order that you & I & all the other sattisfied users may decide we are so impressed with the OLD version - that we WANT TO BUY THE NEW ONE and / or we recommend to Family & Friends that it's worth buying the NEWEST version !
It may be that the OLD version is still avasilable @ $49 in which case - the comment is accurate - even if not - you are gettintg A FULL VERSION of a software that WOULD BE WORTH $49 even it it was replaced a few weeks ago !
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as today's software goes - it's of little use to myself BUT I can see it being extremely useful to many - especially as the developers have relaxed the rule of "Non Commercial Use Only" which I think was a positive move in this instance ! - One thing I've found pleasantly surprising is the high level of Thumbs UP of this Software - AMAZING - In A GOOD WAY !

I hope this has been helpful for some of you :o)

Cheers for now :o)

Good progam, very similar to Essential PIM, who offer a free version for pc and portable version as well.

This program has the same missing feature that Essential PIM, which is why I won't use either. You cannot set the email part to view emails in text mode, which creates a safer email system. This has to be a simple option to add? I asked Essential PIM who said they would look at it, I tried to ask LeaderTask, but going through their site for a contact link, couldn't find one? Uninstall.

@7,10 dear Lilia. I like the Russians either much, but please share your ideas and questions with us. Even the developers may understand very good english ;)

The same problem. Software looks nice so far, but licensing seems to be a problem. It says under Help, that licence has been already expired - what kind of information is this for us getting this software from GaotD?

Did I understand right, that this is an old version of the program? Because the program offers me to pay for the update to the version 6.9.7.
If I understood right, they sell now the version 6.9.7. So the price $45.95 is for the version 6.9.7, not for 6.9.6.

I have just downloaded without any problem in to Windows 7 Professional and it said successfully activated.

I haven't played with yet, but I went to Help => update and wont update.

The current version is: 6.9.6. A new version is: 6.9.7. It wont update because it says: The period of free updates has expired. Then it suggests to buy updates.

HMMM - How come? Have you tried to update yours? And have you come to the same problem as mine?

Actually, just now a new window popped up saying there is a new version to update. I clicked to update and I got the same result. It didn't update.

I just installed it on a flash drive and it looks perfect to me! Too bad all those things did not exist when I was in school! I saw that it was made in Russia... So...

Moderator note: As this is the US English part of the site - comments should be made in English. There is a Russian site at http://ru.giveawayoftheday.com/

It's useless for me.It doesn't support IMAP. If you don't use IMAP it might be OK.

Ok, just got it installed.

Looks like it's going to take a little learning to figure out exactly what everything does and where everything is. But it looks to be straight forward so the learning curve shouldn't be too much of a deal. Has a decent interface, would have been nice with some theme support as the super colorful theme it's using now isn't really my style.

It comes pre-loaded with a bunch of junk entries. I guess as examples to show you what everything is, it wouldn't be that big of a deal but it looks like I have to delete these entries one by one instead of a bulk delete option. No biggie though.

Since I've only toyed around with it a bit, I can't really comment too much on how it all works, but it runs fast on my Windows 7 laptop which isn't the most powerful laptop out there. So that's a good thing especially for those who may have an older PC they'll be installing this on.

Overall it looks like it's gonna be a good app and again, I'm very happy that GOTD was able to get this up here for us.

@ Stan, doesn't look like the PDA software comes with it unfortunately. It also looks like the PDA software is for Windows devices only. It'd be great if they'd develop an iPhone version.
