Whiterabbit,
I did experience similar problems installing Ashton on Windows 7.

Some of the options that proved to be successful:

1)Try evoking the taskmanager pressing Ctrl-Shift-Esc( all OS ) and choose log off Stephen.
Logging back on should resolve the problem.

2)Disable any security program when switching shells.

3)As an alternative, look for Shellswp.exe in the Aston program folder to switch shells.

3)You could also try to end ashton.exe manually in the taskmanager ,using Ctrl-Shift-Esc,...but make sure you chose the explorer shell first!...

@43, works fine with BumpTop. As you say, turn off the Desktop in Aston2. Didn't reset my desktop in BumpTop. However, Aston *DOES* cause other problems. Problems I have seen, interferes with Flash on web sites, not all icons in the system tray are shown, and rules you set in Windows for the system tray are ignored completely. Taskbar setting are non existent as far as I can tell (if they are there, they are hard to find).

Windows Vista/7 allow you to modify the taskbar color to match your tastes without having to install a special theme for it. Can't find that in Aston2.

The constant logging off and back on that Aston requires is pathetic, and disabling the software should be easier to find then it is.

The left side of the screen has a 1px bar that runs from the top to the bottom, even when there is no pop out, moving the mouse there, has no effect since there is no pop out. Why is this bar there?

All in all, Aston2 is fine, but no where near ready as a Desktop/Start bar replacement.

I was really excited at seeing Aston 2 again because I wasn't able to install it on my main computer when it was available last month. Unfortunately I'm now unable to access anything once the computer has booted up. Everything comes to a grinding halt. The only way to turn the computer off is via the reset or off button; the three fingered salute wont work and I can't access restore to be able to return to the usual boring XP look.

I'm sad that it's not worked as I was impressed with the look of it.

At the moment I'm struggling to delete the program. I tried to uninstall it, but to do that I first have to turn the program off, but I can’t find an off button. 

I installed this on my Acer Aspire 4530 and my Acer Aspire 6930. I am very happy with this program.

I am an artist and mod my computer/iPhone geek. In a nutshell, I thrive on the ability to change my computers in dramatic ways. There are some wonderful mods all ready for download.

In addition, they points you to tutorials for creating your own skins. What's more, I find the layouts and widgets and the transformation to be functional as well as being pretty.

This is very important to me, as I entertain on my computers, they need to present well and perform well.

Thank You GAOTD - This is a big win, in my book.

Using Windows 7 x64. The start menu works and the panels, but the shell didn't change. Still the default windows 7 taskbar? Checked the option to switch to the astin taskbar, it logs out, I log in and still the usual windows taskbar.

Installed on XP SP3. It blocked some programs and messed up others. Also slowed some things to a crawl. And all for a stupid drawing of a leaf.

Sorry, Do. Not. Want. Uninstalled.

If you end up with a blank screen when trying Aston, you *might* be able to recover the desktop by restarting Windows Explorer. If you can get to the "Task Manager" with CTRL-ALT-DELETE (usually works in this situation), click the "File" menu, select "New Task (Run...)",and type in "Explorer.exe" (without the quotes). This works for me in XP. Don't know about Vista or Windows 7, but I think it ought to work with them too.

I really like the program and would hate to have to remove it!!!!!

Just wanted to say that the install was flawless. The new Ashton 2 has a very nice and easy to use interface. Works like a champ on Windows XP SP2. I like the new themes as well. Please keep them coming. Of all of the shell enhancements that I have tried in the past years, this IS the one to have! Thanks for all of your hard work!

LOVE IT !!!! had something like this in the past which had some cool desktop icons, don't see anything like this here, though; however, downloaded, registered on XP Home sp3 Dell laptop no prob. Lots of themes to choose from, and can even swap the start menu with other skins just for that. I DID get mixed up and tried some themes which did not load, after about an hour of idiocy, realized that ATZ files or whatever they were, was not the same as an A2theme file, which is the only kind you can use with this version. duh. I'm a gramma, not that techy. The palm live screen was very pretty, one palm front and top gently sway, but took too much memory and Opera was running slow so I opted for stationary type til I can get a faster laptop. Anyway, have had some disappointments in the past with all types of downloads here and in other places; this did impress me. Thank all your gladiators and GAOTD you too.

I see no other mention of this in here but since I installed this program, I've been prompted over and over to run explorer.exe. A window keep popping up titled "File Download - Security Warning""Do you want to run or save this file?" Name: EXPLORER.EXE Type: Application 0.98mb From: C:\WINDOWS. What gives? I select either CANCEL or SAVE [to my desktop] but it still keeps returning.

To clarify my earlier point (52.) for anyone having the same problem. In Aston Preferences, if you tick "Substitute Explorer taskbar with Aston taskbar" but do not tick "Enable Aston Desktop" then the problem is solved and you can once again use the delete key on files as well as traditional shortcuts like copy and paste. This will though mean that although widgets and the taskbar remain you will not get the fancy desktop icons. Also one other annoying feature is that when clicking the start button the start menu appears where it should, but if you hit the Windows Key it appears where ever the mouse is hovering. This is very messy looking. Other than these bugs, very good.

To go back to the Windows shell unlike what 51 said, there is no settings and there is no settings > exit aston, and poof, you’re back- no logoff. Go to preferences at the taskbar, and uncheck the Substitute Explorer taskbar with Aston taskbar. Log off and on agin and you are back to your original desktop.

To answer my own previous question. No, Aston 2 does not make use of version 1.95 pannel categories. Since it's way too much work to do this again due to all the GOTD software I have and version 1.95 works well, I uninstalled Aston 2 and will keep on using the previous version.

#54 you can delete every aspect of the desktop except the startmenu button. The quicklaunch you can turn off from the regular OS interface in XP, and use it in aston as there is an option to use the regular quicklaunch look. The pop up menus can be deleted one menu at a time and then hide the add menu button ... not sure what is left over then. All the other panels , elements, add-ons can be deleted.
The wallpaper changed to whatever you choose.
What ever is left over is not visually significant.

Very good and nice experience with Aston2 and Thanks to GAOTD and Aston team.

It was made such a nice that it won't take much resources and smooth rendering.

Only worry/concern with me is about the security and some keys are not working. Like F2, Control+C etc.

Regarding the security worry, as it is controlling your desktop, if there is any glitch, all keys will be logged and your identity and bank/secured stuff get effected...

If some one gives confidence, I am going to keep it or will be uninstalled...

Looks nice but after enabling and disabling it, Windows XP was hosed so that it just hanged with a blank desktop after login on startup. Had to boot up in safe mode then uninstall Aston 2. Then all was well. Needs to be more failsafe, not ready for prime time with that behavior.

Amazing piece of software, and one that certainly gives a new lease of life to XP.

Obviously it's only been on my machine since the giveaway began, but I've noticed no difference in speed - and all app's are still running at normal speed too.

The only difference is that XP now looks much much better.

Having reverted to XP as I really didn't like Vista (the slower speed and constant nagging), the interface was something I missed - now I've got a quick running system that looks great.

As XP does everything I want at the moment, I've got no intention of upgrading to Windows 7 anytime soon - so Aston's definitely a keeper for me.

A quick and easy way to add some eye candy to Windows - thanks Giveaway, and thanks Gladiators Software.

@lxwarrren- what version of XP are you running? XP Pro SP3 control-x etc. works just fine here. If it's one of the cut-down versions', all bets are off as I explain below.

well, installing aston2 on WinXP home did make me even more annoyed at XP Home- hard as that is to do, I've despisd and hated it since that computer came in the house- there is *no* start menu > settings entry to exit Aston.

So, CJ- To get back to the original shell, double click the desktop icon named "Aston2" and select the radio button marked "explorer" and hit ok- then it does tell you to shut everything down and logs you off to get back to the standard shell.

memory footprint commit according to process lasso is just 64k, so running it on a 256 meg computer does just fine. It's a P4 3ghz, so even the animations work fine.

Looks like under preferences you can use just the aston menu part without the full shell. So I ain't gonna scream too loud about getting the Aston Menu overwritten. Also, if you *don't* have Aston Menu installed, *that's* when it skips the change directory option.

Strange.

Ashton 2 is IMHO one of the better apps to change the appearance of Windows because you can set it up to provide a few productivity enhancements. OTOH you do have to set it up to take full advantage of the widgits, menu bars etc, & the help file could be clearer, more helpful. Ashton 2 is actually 2 apps -- 1 does your start menu, while the 2nd [requiring a log-off or restart], does your task bar & desktop. Switching to the Ashton desktop was confusing at 1st because it's not labeled desktop in the preferences dialog - check the box for the bottom line on the 1st tab.

Installation requires a phone home to activate, so even if you save the already filled in key, the developers may or may not choose to have it working after today. [that's not an editorial statement, saying they should or shouldn't] In XP Pro SP3 32 [where I tracked it], files are split between the program's folder & 2 application data folders for the active user profile under Documents & Settings -- *might* want to install today for every profile you want to use it with, if you decide to keep the app of course. Registry impact is fairly heavy, with InstallWatch Pro reporting "3077 registry entries added.". Most are new CLASS listings or in the Gladiators Software folder, & most are removed when you uninstall -- without doing any customizing [that might create new files etc], uninstall removed the 2 folders under docs & settings, but left the program's folder behind.

I really really liked it until I realized I had lost the ability to pin documents in the toolbar (like with Word, Notepad, etc). Since this is one of my favorite new feature in Windows 7, I'll wait for Aston to integrate this feature too.
Also, it would be nice if one could decide which elements to use (like the widgets on the desktop) without being forced to use the whole package.

Ooookay... Aston2 does leave the original desktop alone, though if you're using LopeSoft's File Menu Tools, upgrade to 5.8.1- Aston does a number on 5.7.

Switching from the standard windows shell using the shell switcher is easy- but there's no suggestion that you have to log off and back on to activate Aston2.

I haven't got a clue yet how Iconoid is going to take this, but I'm going to change resolutions slightly before I try saving under Aston2- the icon positions are not the same, so I'm going to tread wary.

It is a nice array of eye candy, and a much better experience than v1.9.5- OTOH, then I was running Win2kSP4 and now I'm running WinXP Pro SP3... but I doubt that's the whole reason.

I do think I'll sneak in and install it on the wife's computer on the sly (and I am not gonna leave it in aston mode as a surprise) to see how it deals with WinXP Home SP3 with but 256 megs of RAM...

More news later- if I survive.

When I first installed this, the resolution setting 800x600, made the desktop very crowded , but easy to "see" .. But i soon found that all the Aston elements on the desktop were crowding each other out. set resolution to 1024x768 on this 128MB video card to accomodate all these elements.

The first tweaking i did was to strip those elements that were only occassionally needed from the main widget panel and place them along the edges and right click them and make them "autohide". I did the same (autohide) with the main widget panel because it was crowding out my browser and other application windows.
Now i had a semblance of my original working space. Then I went back to a desktop image - color that was not obstructive to easily reading what was on it ... using astons own wallpaper wizard instead of the regular desktop properties which did not seem to work ... the wizard was actually as good or better (right click desktop --->wallpaper) --.

Then I downloaded and changed the start menu to the "construction" skin ...because it uses all the elements (it has several options for the amount of elements you want to use) ....
There is a wizard menu option (right click tray - change theme) allows you to change any skin or theme and gives you direct access to downloading skins and themes and save- store them in the proper location. ( application data-->aston2 -->skins..)
I had already tested a number of skins for that when GOTD had that a week or so ago. That enabled me to go back to the desktop and just remove some of those elements that were built in to "construction" menu like the weather and time and the calendar ... a matter of taste whether to use the elements as part of the desktop or part of the start menu skin.

Going back to the desktop, I created a few more pop up launch menus from their launch bar and put some shortcut clutter from my desktop into those.,, I stretched out the element in the widget panel that held the quick launch items so that they were all visible ... when that was done I had the calendar , the quicklaunch (right click near the QL panel and there is an options item to make a few changes to appearance), the tray, and the taskbar elements at the bottom and sort of pushed off the screen ... so I stripped off the calendar to an autohide edge panel so that the widget panel elements were all visible ... and besides as i said i had the calendar in the start menu anyways.

Bottom line ...if you take time and look around,,, pull things apart with your mouse right click here and there, right click on the aston tray element, and generally reorganize your old pieces into the new interface you can highly customize this interface and eliminate what you do not like or need. I had the advantage of playing with the startmenu for a week or two, which in itself can take a few hours to find the sweet spot between new stuff and comfortable old stuff.

If you right click the tray icon there is a preferences option in the general tab that disables the aston desktop - it seems to answer the question of how to turn it off from an auto load on startup...
. I do know that the start menu skin can be customized to add some menu items , one being to exit Aston, which can be placed into the menu where you want on top or nested, and that will kill the all the components of aston ... if you were just running the startmenu that was the giveaway recently, it killed that, in this case it kills the desktop and the startmenu. It took a bout 20 seconds for my slow system to get back to normal and redraw my desktop.
To restart aston2 , I don't see a choice to just start the startmenu ... Clicking the Aston2 desktop shortcut , which is the shellswap.exe component you are prompted to kill your apps and do a logoff and logon if you want to reinstate the aston components again ... and you are back to your customized aston layout again.

This program is fast, in some respects faster than XP by itself, in some places there is a slight lag on my slow machine 640MB ddr1 - 1.5GHZ -128MBVram (haven't installed it yet on my fast machine, but I have the startmenu and that is faster) ... but overall I see no degradation on my old slow XP machine. A few times while getting setup I hit a long delay, but that was not typical of the operation of the program.

On my fast machine I have essentially a highly customized desktop made of separate utilities so I will be a bit slower to install/play with this on that machine... but on this older machine I had very little in the way of desktop utilities and Aston is a very 'comprehensive" utility if you don't want to scout out and install each element as a separate program (pop out application launcher, weather, calendar, clock, skinning,) (as separate programs you get a bit more in the way of features and tweaking, but not the overall integrated look you have here) the only thing I am still looking to improve is to make the main panel icons and text a few points bigger , without altering substantially my overall resolution. I tried to tweak the font size in the appearance properties in XP and got a memory error message ... if anybody has an idea ??
And i would like to start the aston startmenu without the desktop/shell if that is possible...after I have started without any aston at all.

next I will try to install some other add-ons ,, but I don't know where to store them yet.

Aware this may be my last post from this machine for a while, I would like to complain about the installer not giving you a chance to change the installation directory, so I'm betting it subsumed my standalone Astom Menu installation.

It sure stomped over all the files that were there in E:\Program Files\Aston2 and removed "Aston Menu" from the Aston2 start menu folder. Grr.

I got the clue-stick when I used the Aston Menu shortcut and didn't get a start menu change until I went through the registration for Aston Shell. (then it did bring back the menu change)

I don't see a checkbox or option to save my current desktop, etc, so I hope like all get out the 'shell switcher' either has said save checkbox or does it by default!

This is version 2 however it's a newer revision.

It has been updated and new features have been added as well.

Anyway, I've used Aston Shell for years and how it wiped your Win2K desktop is beyond me. I've never seen anything like that happen.

Doesn't work with Bumptop (well if you turn off Desktop and just use the start menu etc it seems to run but resets ALL of my icons on bumptop) but then in the process I found that Bumptop isn't available anymore anyway :(

This seems to work ok on my Vista Home Premium Laptop with 2GB of Ram and intel Core 2 Duo.

Will keep it only because Bumptop is no longer running on its own and FREE!

Installed no problem on Windows XP SP3. Thank you GAOTD team.

Nice eye candy to play around with, downloaded palm tree beach theme , which cannot fit all my desk top short cuts on it, and the start menu only fits my programs A as far as O on it. Perhaps some of the other themes will be better. Too early to say if it is a keeper but I would recommend as a fun to try.

Sorry. My last question refers to the upper panel categories (drop down menus).

Does anyone know if the categories established in version 1.9 remain with version 2 or do we have to create them and add the different programs all over again?

While Windows 7 Starter on my Netbook does not allow you to change the theme of it, it works fine with this OS. You could virtually create your own theme with the wallpaper included and then load in the interface. I did not encounter any messages in this program that prompted me to disable any security software so unsure of what others encountered.

I like this product. I have Stardock's WindowBlinds and WinExtreme and this is a new fresh look. Both the above have a bigger selection of themes this is more than adequate.

Thank you very much GOTD and Aston for this opportunity to explore some new eye candy.

GREAT gotd sorry for shouting, but I love this offering. I also love this website. I always read the comments before I download, at times i feel bad for the companies offering the giveaway, because there may be some problems with intial installing, but at times without people listing what seems to be some unfriendly post. the solution that you guys always figure out might not have ever been found. so sorry for the long post and thank you all for being here and for this wonderful site.
