BCWipe has long been a graphical program. The BCWipe control panel has many options to automatically wipe folders including IE/FireFox history and cache. You also have the added context menus to manually wipe any file at any time.
Beyond that you can wipe free space, slack space, paging files.... all in just 3 clicks in the control BCW panel.

If you are concerned about privacy and were interested in this program you should try WIPE
WIPE is a similar program.
It is free and has frequent updates.
You may prefer it to History Killer.

CAUTION: Saved Settings were lost upong Reboot!!
Auto update was repeatedly turned off and saved - yet when I rebooted this setting was turned on again. Is this a Bug or is this a ploy to lose the free Give Away version??

#17--using IE6 is like having a sign out saying "Hack me". It is very critical for the security of your computer to update to IE7 or IE8 now.

#12 - Amen about not relying on any one cleaner even if it's CCleaner, as I have found that Privacy Guardian and CCleaner both will clean some things that the other leaves behind, usually about a dozen or so each. I also let each of them wipe free space on the disk on the theory that if they miss stuff elsewhere they may miss something on the disk too. Not that I'm paranoid or anything, just that either you get it or not. Now I could go off the deep end and use East Tec Eraser on top of them.

The setting to automatically update history killer is default, remember to uncheck this in settings so registration does not get invalidated, as most programs here do not include updates. The ones that do usually are clear in stating they are exception to the no update rule.

My threepence worth.....

I use CCleaner (have since the days of it's original name, Crap Cleaner), and Advanced System Care. CCleaner updates regularly, and the current version allows for MFT wipe as well as the cleaning out of temporary files, etc; ASC is good for defragging and checking on security settings. While there are many alternatives including GAOTD current offer, I think my CC/ASC combo is a good balance. I am not paranoid, but I clean up the computer regularly for performance and space considerations: comp is old and tweaking it is important to maximise performance.

One reason to like History Killer Pro is that it's not CCleaner. While that might invite a lot of disagreement, please consider this: CCleaner is powerful enough to do some real damage (cleaning the entire registry for example)... I don't know about you, but I can think of several people I wouldn't/won't recommend CCleaner to for just that reason. History Cleaner Pro is quick, easy, hits many (most?) of the basics, and is IMHO ideal for those folks who never clean out their browser cache, let alone their temp folders [in fact, many do not even know you can].

Installing History Killer Pro doesn't effect Windows much, though it does install to an odd place: under UserProfile Application Data in XP's Docs & Settings. I had problems initially with registration, checking the box during install to run the app immediately on clicking "Finish"... it read the key from the earlier GOTD version, then said it couldn't contact the needed server -- shutting down then restarting the app it registered just fine.

Now a couple of folks normally comment that cleaning up your tracks so-to-speak, is just for those with something to hide & someone to hide them from. Well that's true enough, BUT, sometimes a small dose of paranoia is a good thing... For one thing, if (heaven forbid) someone managed to plant a bot or otherwise gain access to your system, they can't grab anything sensitive if there's nothing sensitive there to grab. And if you do anything work related on a PC/laptop, that brings up all sorts of issues, like can your employer legally go through everything stored on your drive(s) [I don't pretend to have *any* legal knowledge, but Google & you'll likely find enough info on actual legal cases to at least raise your eyebrows].

In a nutshell, cleaning up after yourself is never a bad thing. Not leaving anything behind when/where possible is even better, though it helps to remember that deleting files &/or caches doesn't prevent or eliminate shadow file copies or un-erased data. Consider that most people have no way of knowing if their PC/laptop was ever compromised, unless or until the person(s) responsible does something to catch your attention. Being a little paranoid as tax season approaches may not be an entirely bad thing for any of us.

Ccleaner WILL overwrite deleted data if you set it up to do so. Personally? I'm gonna stick with piriform...

Ccleaner can be set to securely erase ie:over write anywhere from 3 to 35 passes. So yes, Ccleaner FTW again. ;)

watch out when trying some of these "history killer" type of programs...i used something called MRU Blaster a few months ago and it deleted all kinds of useful data, like my Start Menu's "10 most often used program list" and some others..(yeah, my fault for not investigating the program enough)...CCleaner, on the other hand, has never caused me any problems under the default setup...

Aw, come on, people. Ranting on about how brilliant CCleaner is merely states the obvious: we all know that (and if we don't, we should do: it's been around long enough, and after its own fair share of glitches along the way really has matured into an outstanding freeware product.)

Today's software attempts to do more and provide more options with more security. The attempt is genuine, though the failure's obvious: not much point in "securely erasing" only a part of the history, because 100% erasure of, er, 85% is, well, pointless.

Its detection rate failed when compared not only to CCleaner but also Steve Gould's excellent little app. It also failed against jv16PowerTools, though I expected that: even CCleaner isn't up to jv16PowerTools investigative abilities.

Hopefully, the developer will be able to improve and expand on all the work already undertaken.

Also hopefully, some of the posters here will be able to improve and expand on their own knowledge just a little bit: for example, using IE as a catch-all cleaner isn't as comprehensive a clean-out as might be thought. . .

Whilst using IE6 really, really isn't in any way wise at all. (If you can't stand the thought of IE8's operational paranoia, then at least move up to IE7. And make sure it's running with the latest patches. Or ditch IE altogether and go with Opera.)

Today's GOTD isn't for me because I don't think it's a mature enough app and because it's out-performed in critical respects by existing freeware and commercial apps. Good luck to the developer, though, for the future. And to GOTD, thanks again.

xD wow, CCleaner is THE best alternative, and also the almost altime favorite Advanced System Care. Both do a waaaay better job. +, CCleaner has more options and it even says a little info about ur computer. ASC is good for taking care of security problems and defragging, but for sweeping ur computer, CCleaner comes to the rescue.

This is good for new users. It has an excellent help file which describes the purposes of the areas it cleans, and it separates the found items well so they may be more easily inspected. This makes it easier to understand what you are deleting and why.

For more advanced users, a better way to keep your computer clean is to run software in a sandbox program such as Returnil, Sandboxie, etc.. However, you do have to be careful doing this as you can easily lose changes you want to keep if you're not careful.

ccleaner does the same thing and it's free.

Can someone tell me if it covers Internet Explorer 6. It mentions Internet Explorer 8. Does that mean it also covers Internet Explorer 6. I have Internet Explorer 6

Stupid comparison. BCWipe is a command line tool without graphical user interface. It will run from the Explorer context menu too. BUT It's a simple file eraser and redundant because there is the free HEIDI Eraser. And it will erase traces of your activities only if you tell BCWipe what files to erase. Next time think about what you're writing.

I can't get rid of this program!

This software is for paranoid people, or kids not wanting their parents to see which pornsites they visited on the family computer. I can see that it can be useful for deleting cookies and temp files, although if you use explorer.exe you can manually delete cookies and temp files. I have a HP Laptop with AMD Turion X2 Processor, 8Gig Ram and 500G Hdd, loaded with Windows 7X64 Home Premium. This program loaded quickly, it's less than 6 Meg big and competently deleted my (1)Cookies (2)Prefetch data (3)Browser History (4)Emptied my Recycle bin. (5)Cleaned my recently viewed documents and a whole wack of other tasks I have no idea what.. So yes it makes cleaning one's computer easier than going into "My Computer" and deleting whatever files I want to, manually. Would I pay money for this program when I can get CCleaner and or other "Windows Wipers" for free? Dunno free stuff is free :) So No I'd stick to the tried and true freeware

While CCleaner is a fine program, it is not a fix all!!!
I have that and others like it on my computer, what one does not find, the other does.
Every time one of these programs is offered, someone always has to reply about CCleaner being the ONLY one you'll EVER need. Simply not true.

To be not unfair
has 2 small extra features, compared to ccleaner & others:
- "Read details on particular websites prior to erasure"
- "Parse locked Index.dat"

But Considering that almost all could be done invidually by an intelligent batch file (including : Echo |y ..., Reg.exe ..., unlock.exe ...) even the low price seems a little bit steep - even more, looking at the incomplete results!!!

Easy install and activation. I think these features are already available with spyware removers and some of the antivirus softwares..

So may be of no use if the you are using the programs which have these functions.

#3 & #2 - Ccleaner is great software, but I think History Killer Pro is too. Yes, not having a "check or uncheck all" is inconvenient, but History Killer Pro will overwrite the files you "really" would rather no one see when you delete, where as Ccleaner just deletes (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Installed easily first time (win 7 64x), and the registration actually uses a number - which suggests you might be able to install this after the appointed time is up.

I give this two thumbs up - simple to use and seems to work just fine. Thanks GOTD & Emergency Soft.

P.S. - For the first time the "Activating..." window is not closing after activation - very strange, and there doesn't seem to be a way to close this dumb window except to close Firefox. Arg...

BCWipe, despite its price, covers far more options. :: It also covers Win 9x/NT/2K/XP/Vista/7 and all flavours of x32/x64/IA64

This will need to add quite a bit to compete with the "wiping" industry leader.

Install and run History Killer. THEN run cCleaner and you'll see that History Killer, uh, doesn't. In fact, it leaves quite a bit behind, and not just the stuff that it doesn't know about but that you can customize cCleaner to learn. Nope, all sorts of IE, FireFox, & temp file stuff as well.

So, let's see... you cannot customize it, and it doesn't work for the stuff that it DOES know about; at least not as much as cCleaner, and they want you to pay for the privilege of using it?

All browsers now provide private browsing mode so no traces are stored while you are surfing so use that when travelling or at friends homes. No software needed ;)
