@Mike R
I believe you are thinking of Geoff Crammond's GP games.

If so, there are still active communities for them, especially GP4.
There are several brilliant mods that bring the teams and drivers up to current seasons, and many, many fantastic user-made tracks.

Screensaver installed ok on Windows 7 x64. It works just fine, so don't know why another person posted they couldn't get the screensaver to work on Windows 7 64-bit. Excellent graphics on HD 1080p monitor, great audio track. I enjoy this.

No I wouldn't let it run all the time if I want my computer to last, but to show it once in a while is no problem.

I think people who want current teams and drivers in the screensaver are not aware that the licensing fees for that would cost the developer so much money, the screensaver would never pay for itself, no matter how much they charged for it. They would have to sell thousands upon tens of thousands of screensavers to cover the licensing fees alone. When was the last time you remember someone you know buying a screensaver? Although I wouldn't mind buying some of the classic screensavers that came with old versions of Windows like Windows 98 and Windows 2000 that you don't see anymore.

Thank you GOTD and Astro Gemini for a fun, visually stimulating screensaver.

I don't know why so many people hate screensavers. Everybody, and I mean everybody has a hard drive big enough to store some fun things. Just because you have them installed doesn't mean you have to use them all of the time and I don't. I like the capability and the seasonal ... flash. It's not first person, it gets a little too upclose sometimes, but I like it.

Looks great - EXCEPT it does not work on Windows Vista or Windows 7. When it tries to run, I get some message about the program terminating unexpectedly. Both of my machines have OpenGL graphics cards, and I tested OpenGL with an program available from opengl.org. That ran fine but this screen saver does not run.

I wasted more time by redownloading and trying it all over again. Same results. I imagine this is the reason for this only having a 17% positive rating. Epic FAIL.

Fortunately, there was a great game giveaway today. Thanks GOTD for that!

Undertanding that "screen saver" is now a euphemism for "time-out display", and this equally applies to any such software, it strikes me as 'funny' that, in this case, if you're a F1 fan, this will normally kick in under 1 of 2 circumstances: a) you will either be away from your desk (so won't see much of it anyway), or are working offline nearby, and this will distract you and possibly make you less productive.
Just an observation, not for or against these things (though I no longer use them).

Hi Everyone, WOW!!! I guess I just got reminded how old I am! LOL! I have been racing and wrenching on cars all my life! I agree with #12 (MikeR) Thanks for the remark, F1 is sure a long way from where it came from! Its all about Money and not about who could build the best performing and longest lasting Machine! (o; Same for all racing anymore, NASCAR Used to be a forum to show witch of the Big 3's Built the best car for that year! Now all the cars are built in a shop that builds ALL the cars the SAME! Out of panels and forms! The only thing to say “What Kind” of Car it Is? Is the logo! and now Nissan??? That's a disgrace! and a shame! Never had the $$$ to get into F1 myself, But, I did wrench on some very nice Ford Indy Engines, Way, Way! Back in the day! LOL! Its a hobby for me today, But, I still race some and build my own cars and Engines! and I have my little collection of 14 old 60's and early 70's Muscle Cars! 66 Fastback Mustang, 66 GT-350 Mustang Shelby, and A 68 (Numbers match!) 302cid Z-28 Camaro! Citified “REAL” Just to name a few! Mostly SCCA and Drag Racing! My need for speed keeps me going! (o;

As for this Screen Saver! 3D Formula 1 Screensaver, I think is Great!! It works on my Vista Laptop and my AMD 6 Core Bulldozer and Windows 7 Desktop just fine! Its very nice to look at, The Graphics are great! If I'm away from my PC for a short time and come back to this screen saver? I get a lot of fond memories of when F1 was something to go see! Not just watch on TV! (o;

On the technical side! I guess you young users don't understand a screen saver is not something you let your PC go into and leave it that way for hours on end! #5 (Paul) You Never leave a screen saver on for Hours! WTFrick! That's just nuts! Unless your watching it or just away for 30 minuets or so! There is NO Resin to leave the Screen saver running! Is there? Windows 7 has Screen savers! and you can download lots of them from Microsoft! Among millions of other places! Oh! and Trust me! I was an IT Professional for a major Bank for over 18 years! LCD's and/or LED monitors CAN BURN IN AN IMAGE! Don't think so? Leave your Desktop on with nothing going one for a bout a week! Then, Go to another screen and look at the ghost! I seen it plenty of times until the bank made it a policy to use a screen saver! Or, Turn your PC OFF when going home! Screen savers where Never intended to be left on for hours or DAYS at a time! They use resources! Obviously! But, Its NOT going to stress your PC or Laptop anywhere Near as much as playing a good GAME WILL! I use Games that have a "Sample Mode" Or, "Demo Mode" to (Burn in) any New PC I build. The real Idea is let your PC run and if your away for 10 to 30 Minuets? It turns “ON” The screen saver! Then, If your away longer then that? It shuts the monitors “OFF!” And if your away for more then an hour or maybe two hours! Its goes to SLEEP! Simple! Now Enjoy your screen saver! and quit trying to making your self Neurotic! LOL!

I give 3D Formula 1 Screensaver, 2 THUMBS UP! and special Thanks! To Astro Gemini Software for (Producing!) letting their Screensaver be given away on GOTD for FREE Today! I for one Really appreciate today's Gift! Thank You! Of Course 2 Thumbs Up! and Very Special Thanks! To GOTD for all your Hard work and efforts to Bring us Geeks Todays 3D Formula 1 Screensaver, and every-days Great offering for us, To Test, Enjoy, Play With and Use! For as long as we want for FREE! Thank You! (o;
Thanks for Reading, The forgoing is only my Humble Opinion and My 2 & 1/2 Cents worth! Inflation and all! LOL! (o; Take Care, But Always! Have Fun! Rick D.

@mario (#8): I'm pretty sure everyone nowadays knows that screensavers aren't a practical necessity. A lot of people just enjoy them for their looks. I have no use for the vast majority of giveaways I see here, but that doesn't mean they're "no good". Instead of crying because the software fairy didn't leave the latest popular software under their pillow, the whiners should just pick up the pieces of their shattered lives and move on.

One of the better AG screensavers, although it would have been nicer to have a constant in-car view. This just looks like random scenes from a race.

#5: "Only thing is that not only is this a boring screen saver but a laptop fan WRECKER. When one is away from one’s computer then your computer need not work hard for hours. This will shorten the life span of your fan and processor."

3D screensavers use Direct X or OpenGL with your graphics hardware to display the screensaver graphics. If your graphics hardware normally enters a low power state when your PC/laptop is idle, running a screensaver it's no longer idle, so you won't go into power-saving mode the same way.

Beyond that, less capable graphics hardware may have to work harder, closer to max. Higher end graphics hardware may produce more heat & take more power to run, not because it's working so hard, but it's just no longer in that lower power state, & those graphics cards [& chipsets on a laptop] generally take more power & generate more heat. In between those 2 are newer CPUs with a built in graphics.

AS far as screensavers killing your laptop or PC go, it's a bit like saying never turn your laptop or PC on, never, ever use them, & they might last longer. Besides the obvious, why have them if you don't use them argument, electronics, with few exceptions like flash RAM, do not wear out from use. Mechanical components like fans do wear, but critical fans are generally running anyway -- they might increase their speed under load when things start heating up a bit, so you notice them, but they're usually still spinning unless the PC's off or asleep. Fans pretty rarely fail, being designed to run 24/7, but if they do quit, if/when things get too hot the system should shut itself down automatically before any damage can occur.

This software when running did rise the temperature on CPU by 16 degree Celsius. If you have poor cooling fans, you can easily burn your PC in less than 30 minutes.

Obviously not a burner/converter they're giving away today, hence all the negatives.

No 5, If you are going to leave your laptop alone. Turn it off, then it will last even longer! Don't just blame the screensavers!

Note to AstroGeminy: It would be nice if we could see how it looks before installing. It could be a screencapture would have helped.

In now what seems to be the distant past, back in the days when F1 stood for something more than the F-All it represents today, motorsport fans salivated over the latest release of an F1 game from a designer so famous then that we all knew his name but now I, for one, can't even remember.

This screensaver reminds me of those days: good graphics, excellent fluidity, and an appealing "arcade" feel; it's more like turning on the PC and finding youself in the middle of a game than watching a screensaver kick in. I don't know whether it's a keeper or not but kudos to the creators -- kudos, too, to AstroGemini, unfailingly (and tediously) slammed on here because screensavers are so-oooo yesterday / so-ooo boring, when in fact it's a developer of honest repute which has never sought to spam or scam any of its users.

Thanks, GOTD, and thanks AstroGemini: rather than waste my time watching the US Grand Prix today and listening to all that excited talk about how, er, a tire is graining -- oh gosh wow! The sheer thrill, Mr Ecclestone! -- I'll run this screensaver: it's a darn sight more satisfying to view than anything served up in Formula Gone. . .

@5

I use programs that are this intensive to test out new PC's if it survives the test I know the machine is going to last for a while.

Besides that I needed a screensaver badly today as my acer L1916 caps are getting buggy on me and the only way the screen holds is with constant movement.

nowadays computers at lease win7 and 8 have hibernation and or power options that include monitors shutting down after certain minutes. so this screensaver is no good to the average user these days. if you still use xp you might consider this screensaver. no thanks Gaotd for this program.

Funny thing is on going to their website, I clicked on one ofthe car images. A separate window opened up, it never fully loaded as McAfee SiteAdvisor software found it to be a risky site to visit, the same message also appeared on what was their homepage:
"

Why were you redirected to this page?

Astro Gemini's software always installs easily without problems. Only thing is that not only is this a boring screen saver but a laptop fan WRECKER. When one is away from one's computer then your computer need not work hard for hours. This will shorten the life span of your fan and processor.
