Even though a little clunky, this product has a LOT more options in terms of types of objects you can render. Pages, books, cups, etc etc -all stuff the competitors lack. Good job GOTD

"To get in-program previews of templates you’ve downloaded from their site, just right-click and save the matching images (as a .bmp or .jpg) from the template download page into the program’s Templates folder , probably C:\Program Files\ExeIcon3DBox\Templates. Make sure the photo has the same name as the template; and PRESTO, previews."

But... how can you download the templates? No way from the website.

Downloaded 3DBox Maker earlier today, but was not able to get to it to test it out until a few minutes ago. It is a nice little program and you can create quickly. I am not too concerned about looks of a program, just that it is not cluttered and that it is quick. This is very easy to navigate of which I did without reading the help. Took a book template and added one of my graphics and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it looked. I liked what I created and am anxious to continue the project and learn more. Visited 3DBox site and that too was easy to navigate. Downloaded all those templates everyone above was talking about - so now I'm ready to go. Downloaded very good. Installed without problems. Registration went without a hitch. Nice little program and am glad to download to try it. Nice job and a nice addition for me. Thanks Exeicon and GAOTD

For those interested, I've downloaded the additional templates from http://www.freesafesoft.com/ei-3d-box-shot/?u=giveawayoftheday&v=571&w=1052 and added them to c:/programfiles/exeIcon/templates, complete with the pics for each template.

Just download the templates in the link below and replace those templates in c:/programfiles/exeIcon/templates, as I've merged the existing and additional templates in the zip file. Just download and unzip it into the same directory.

The GUI may need improvement but this is a cool program. I like that it also offers 3D text in the nice selection of templates that come with it. The only thing I couldn't find in it was a way to make the background transparent. Maybe it is in there somewhere but if so it should be easier to find. If not, they should add the option in next version.

Thank you Giveaway of the Day (GOTD) and ExeIcon.com

The strength here is in the variety of templates. I have a couple of other programs of this type from previous givaways that are much more professional than this one, but will keep this around simply for the variety of objects in the templates.

The user interface is horrible. It's clumsy and not at all intuitive and user friendly. As a matter of fact I've launched this program five times and still stumble around trying to add my custom images to a template.

When you re-size something it does not calculate the correct aspect ratio. If I resize in height the program really should adjust the width accordingly so that the final image is correct in its aspect ratio.

I dowdloaded the extra templates offered abouve and there is *no preview* for them.

I agree about the transparency issue. Normally you'll want to take a rendered image like this into Photoshop or a similar editor for final editing and or/composition For that you need transparency as a save option.

Spelling errors. (For example in the extra templates there is a 'pellow'. If you're going to sell something worldwide, then hire an experienced translator to assure professional and correct language in your application.

If the developers work on this program to literally bring it into the 21st century and fix the horrible end user interface issue it may become a contender.

As it is now I would absolutely NOT pay money for this. The way it is, it is very amature-ish despite its one strong point that is a decent variety of template objects.

On 20-5-2010 the app. 3D Ebook Cover was available here on GOTD ( http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/3d-ebook-cover/ ). I had installed it although its applications were rather limited due to the sparse amount of object available with the app. As it happens four days ago I opened a project I had made with it only to discover it had reverted to a trial version. I promptly posted the following in the comments thread on it's page from 20/5. It hasn't appeared there yet.

=======================
(6-7-2010)
Today I started this app again and it told me my serial number was expired and it immediately brought me to a page on their web site where I could purchase one. So it appears that this version was just a trial version. Not a fully registered version. The last time I used it before today was on 31-5-2010.

It now shows in big capitals on the image:

3D EBOOK COVER
TRIAL VERSION

I think everyone has the impression this isn't supposed to happen.

Could the GOTD people please look into this?
=======================

Have others who installed 3D Ebook Cover experienced the same?
I wonder whether it's a coincidence that only four days later this alternative is offered here.

Compared with 3D Ebook:

On the positive side today's app has a much broader application range because of the much larger number of templates/objects that can be used in the program.

On the negative side is its limited user interface. 3D Ebook has a more advanced user interface and a better/larger work/preview area. I don't like the rather small area you are forced to work in with today's app. For (quite) slow computers this might be useful but it woold be preferable if 3D Box Maker would allow the user to select a size (and perhaps also quality) setting for the work/preview area.

pro: crystal clear beautifully rendered graphics

contra: has been said here before, but Iwhat I missed most of all ->
an undo button!
a more reliable way to move the handles (if at least it would show you the percentage it moves, now you simply have to guess)
fill-in box to switch to manual input for x,y,z coordinates, angles, gamma, lightning, etc...

Very nice software with the most options and flexibility I have seen for a boxmaker software. The only thing that I can criticize is there seems to be no option for transparent background for the png format.

As others have mentioned, the download link in the program for extra free templates are not downloadable. Poster #26 gave a WORKING link to download those templates along with a list of which ones are duplicates from the installer. Thanks #26.

This was #26's link (get it while it lasts):

I don't know if anybody has had a problem like mine with this program, but every time I tried to save a project or an edited image in my computer, the program crashed and all my work went away. This happened to me almost ten times in a row. I don't know what's happening. Please, if anybody from its creators reads this, please try to help me, because I REALLY needed such a program and I was thrilled at the beginning to discover it.

GAOTD's 3D Ebook Cover EXPIRED !!!???

OK I was playing around with todays giveaway 3D Box Maker when I remembered that another 3D soft was given away in May, to be exact on 20th of May. That was 3D Ebook Cover 1.0.
So I wanted to compare this two apps.
I started 3D Ebook Cover and: what the…Warning appears:”Unfortunately, your serial number is expired...” Next browser window is launched and opens home page of this app offering me to buy full version.
Turns out that the version downloaded from GAOTD was/is 30 days evaluation copy which expired on 20th of June.
This is very disappointing for me.
I always thought people exaggerated when they reported on GAOTD's page that some programs become trial after certain period. 'Maybe they use some aggressive registry cleaners which wiped programs reg infos', I said to myself. But obviously they were right about this issues.

GAOTD TEAM I expect some actions will be taken about this.

GAOTD fan, vipu

Some people like to touch what they buy, or at least see a picture, & that includes software downloads. To accommodate them (& hopefully increase sales), sellers most often show a picture of a box. 3D Box Maker lets you make pictures of [real or fake] boxes that you can put on your web site, in emails etc... since we're talking usually smaller, lower rez images, even big names like Microsoft don't always go the photography route -- check the on-line stores -- so 3D Box Maker can be all you need.

On the down side, image editing/creation features are minimal, & while you don't necessarily want photo-realism, you could do the artwork that covers (skins) your 3D box faster/easier elsewhere. However if you do use another app for your skins, neither the app nor it's help file gives you much in the way of guidance, with no recommended image sizes for example. On the plus side, 3D Box Maker is a relatively mature app that can use hardware acceleration from your graphics card/chip, runs with almost Zero impact on Windows [it uses 1 registry key to keep track of settings], & has a no-nonsense GUI that, while some call it ugly, doesn't cost you time trying to figure out what feature's hidden where. It's also faster than learning to use the free Blender [though if you do take the time to learn it there isn't too much in the 3D realm you can't do]. It's also nice that the developer compiled a GOTD version [dated: 10/17/2010?] requiring no keys or activation apps/steps.

what a great little program. not very eye appealing lay out but does a good job. installed quick, registration was pre-done,loads quick.
took only 5 minutes to get to know how to use this program. can come in handy for alot of things, making sale e signs, thumbnails for program folders and so on.
Runs very lite until you process your project but does not slow system(im using xp pro sp3). if you have kids or like to be creative or even own a small company this software will come in handy.
thanks GOTD!
p.s. how about some movie making software to be given away?maybe..please.lol

There is nothing NOT to Like about this clever little graphic program. What a delight to use, even with its VERY old-fashioned GUI. If your other Tools are chosen and most-used for their Effectiveness, than DIS is one you'll use similarly. No kidding, from one who's used many....

The free templates are no joke, either, so get'em all. The marketing aspects they serve are broad. Hey, one can make $$$-with today's freeware, yes, cause Xicon can be a $-maker for ya! Tanx for the gift!!

Ohhh...it has a tendency for its window to open-to-center, which is annoying

On the good side:
The program downloaded and installed on Win7 Pro 64 w/o a problem.
Instant registration! No need for a code or going online.
Uses minimal resources when running: only 3 megs of RAM and barely no CPU cycles.
Fast loading and very easy to use.

On the bad side:
No option to cancel out of quitting the program.

If you have a need for a 3D box making program, this should easily meet your needs.

As a summary:

*Pros

-Plenty of templates

*Cons:

-Spartan interface

-A serious one: No transparency is possible

How on earth can we get rid of floor and background to obtain a transparent .png?

Anyway, no more complaints. It's free as always here.

I understand those with graphic/modeling abilities don't need this kind of software, but this has some nice features for those of us who just need a quick but original image. They go beyond boxes to CDs, bottles, notebooks, cans, picture frames, 3d text, fans, rolls, bags, etc. It is super simple to use: flash tutorial (http://www.exeicon.com/3d-box-shot/demo.htm) goes a little fast (it has a mixture of English instructions with some Japanese prompts but the software I downloaded has English prompts) but the sample for how it works explains it pretty well (http://www.exeicon.com/3d-box-shot/guide.htm). It loaded without problems. I've been playing with it this morning and haven't seen any issues. You can load your own 3ds models to it (I'm not a modeler so I haven't tested this feature), and your own graphics to decorate the items. You can combine different objects together. It is a pretty simple, straight forward program that doesn't pretend to be more than what it is, but what it does, it seems to do very well, and I think will suit my needs for quickly creating some packaging elements.

Downloaded and registered OK on Vista HP 32 bit, but the author does not make available the free templates that are supposed to be available to registered users. You are required to buy the program anyway, so that makes this download less than a fully-registered program.
Is this deliberate or is it an error?

Thanks GAOTD and ExeIcon for this wonderful piece of software. It comes with more than 40 templates pre-installed already and for today you can get more ( about the same additional number for free from their website instead of $5 a piece!). A great bundle of giveaways! I like it because the user interface is so simple and intuitive. It's so easy to produce your own desired pictures from the templates. The objects can be added or deleted as desired. The rendering is also fast; plus you can edit those pictures you've already published. Very small learning curve required. It's convenient for those who want to produce 3d pictures for their websites quickly. Great thanks!

The program installed and validated ok. But it had to be opened as an administrator in Vista 32 bit, which I rarely have to do. As far as I can tell you can't save your ebook cover with a transparent background. If this is so, then the end result doesn't have the flexibility of one with a trans. bg. It's a lot of work to erase a background with reflections, drop shadows and lighting effects.

The controls for the position, angle and size of the book were awkward to use - for me - compared with 3D Ebook Cover which GOTD hosted a month or so ago. I mostly ended up just using the default option. The rendered result was nice and sharp
and the pages look fairly realistic, but I wish that the software added some finishing, realistic touches to the cover like a seam between the front and the spine.

I decided to try this because it looked easy and it is ....sorta.

Installed/activated and runs fine Win7 x64

Editing cover takes a bit of tieme depending on what you want : text , colors etc

Someone entered above they wished form more templates well you can go here to get more free
http://www.freesafesoft.com/ei-3d-box-shot/?u=giveawayoftheday&v=571&w=1052

The problem is these do NOT come with a photograph so one would be advised to change the name as they are downloaded and placed into the folder:
c:/programfiles/exeIcon/templates

IF you want a picture just load a new template into the program and export with no changes. I think it exports only in .jpg (??? Not sure) and if so it must be converted to .png with same name.

then when you look at choices , you WILL see a picture.

LOTS OF TEMPLATES !!!

Mistake in my last post.

There is a collection of about 40 templates in the program using open template or the bottom of the Add Oject menu.

ALSO, follow the links on the exeicon page!!!
and grab their free templates there is several more cool ones that are not in the program, and they are currently free to download. I grabbed nearly 50 of them, but some are apparently repeats.

This really adds value to the program, I', gonna work on an orange juice box creation today :)

well i feel silly. maybe there are other people out there like me. i missed the significance of virtual box. i figured it was a useful program for making box covers/labels etc, ie real ones, when it just renders an image for use online. great if you are into 3d/ online graphics and stuff of that ilk. no problems installing and it looks like it will work well enough. only problem is me. i dont make nor have need to make 3d boxes for a website i dont have. still if this is your cup of tea it looks allright to me. :o) still maybe i will play with it later.

i dont comment often, but thought i would use this opportunity to say thanks GotD. like this one, not everything is what i want, but there's good stuff [i use] often enough to make me check most days. great job.

PROS:
Runs fine in Windows 7 64 bit.
Controls couldn't be more simple - great for a quick concept creation, or for fun art.

Does a nice job of making short work of a 3D box or book design, renders a 3D disk, curved surface, and it makes simple 3D text.

Rotating 3D canvas. Just place the pic on the surface of the object, rotate and position (one or more objects) and render a snapshot.

8 templates total
It will also import 3ds files
- and you can have multiple objects in the shot at once.

Renders and exports a clean picture up to 4096x4096

Cons:
The maximum size for the preview is about 400x400 - the preview pane takes up most of the window. This leaves an enormous amount of blank real estate on the screen, letting you know that the program is better situated on an 800x600 screen, it's awkward and feels like a throwback, but it doesn't effect the quality of the render.

Not enough tools and options to be considered any kind of full 3D rendering program, just a sparse handful of buttons and sliders that do what they are supposed to do.

Has an advanced tab for Hardware rendering that shows the same few options over and over in a long list. Looks like there was originally picture resoltuions or something that are no longer there - just "32 bit color, 24 bit depth" over and over. Have no idea what it does, but if it doesn't work, switch back to software rendering.

Conclusion:
I like having simple little gizmos like this. No use trying to make a photo program deal with it when this one allows you to pop images on to a 3D canvas.

It does seem dated, kinda wonky, and a little sparse on options.

Overall, I'd say grab it today, it's fun.
As far as paying $50 for it....
Probably not the best value out there.

Make sure you choose the desktop shortcut option. Otherwise, it won't show up in your programmes list either (on the start bar). And yes, the templates don't have any name, it's all just file no.

It doesn't do what it says on the box. ( Pun intended).
It does not create a box. It just creates an image of the box. i.e. it's a picture of how a box would look, not a net that can be folded and made into a box.
Who would use it?
Someone who wanted to design a demonstration of how a package might look, but didn't have the skills or tools to actually create a package themsleves.
Why they would want to do it like this, rather than create a cardboard mock-up beats me.

When I saw today's offer, I went to the developer's site, seeking more information. I found that, although the site is rated "green" (safe) by W.O.T. (Web of Trust), two awards listed for the product are from sites rated "red" (unsafe). Wouldn't you think that recommendations by unsafe sites are an association that the developer and product can do without? Not very reassuring to someone contemplating using software from this developer.

I run Windows XP/SP3 on an older Pentium 3 with a rather small hard drive. I had passed on another GOTD software that had similarities to today's. I would have grabbed it, but passed on the 3D Ebook Cover on May 20th only because the requirement stated that Pentium 4 was needed.

Really... how different IS today's GOTD software from other 3D Box software out there? The developer's site suggests it IS different than most of the other 3D box software due to the use of a certain algorithm. The site side-by-side compares an image created by its product with an example of an image created by another piece of software. The images appear distinctly different in rendering quality. A point of interest and curiosity I'd like to make is that the performance of this software is shown as advanced and different, yet the developers seem to indicate that the software is able to perform on OS's from Windows 95 right up to Windows 7. Hmmmm.

I think I'd have to look into things further (including more comments by others at GOTD) before I consider downloading this one.

Installs easily but at the end of installation it throws up a window with the shortcut folder; very 80's :) Seems fairly simple to use but rather overpriced if I were considering buying this. $49.99 buys a personal licence - 5 users pay $149.99 & 10+ $299.90. Hellooo! It's not THAT good!

The rendering is generally reasonable, but that's on a quad core with 2 Gb RAM. Don't know how it would stack up on a slower system. Has not so much as a single level undo on the main interface, although the picture editor does. The editor itself is a pretty basic affair, and personally I'd be inclined to doing all my main edits to a picture in a more powerful external program.

As a giveaway it's fine, except the only real purpose for this kind of program is to create commercial advertising, which negates the agreement on GOTD.

A comparable freeware is CDCoverCreator, with no major restrictions on its use. I know which I'd choose first!

i found a freeware 3D box maker before but it was so difficult for a home user like me to navigate the application. this one is so easy and i was able to make 2 samples - a notebook and a book cover in less than 5 minutes! the output images are also crisp, clean and clear. This runs well also on my Windows 7 x64. thanks GAOTD!
