I tried this program with the hope that speech engines improved over the last years since this technology is around. But, at least in this software, the voice modulation and pronunciation is the same: unexpressive and with strange pitch. For me it’s quite difficult to understand what is read. Therefore, I’ll stick to reading.

First, here's a link to a free version of some really great text to speech. Blows this stuff out of the water - Only comes with one voice, but it sounds way better than this mechbot drone. http://www.naturalreaders.com/download.htm

I wanted to point out to those interested in speech to text that the capability for T-S is built in to Win XP and Vista.

Even in hardware speech to text, the techniology is still iffy. Regional accents, whether you are tired or have a sore throat, many things affect speech recognition software and hardware. The software stuff is of limited capability, even when done by the T-S experts. Hardware is the best way to go.

If you still want T-S capabilities, a decent enough version is built in to all MS Office products starting with Office XP. For me, the Office version works great. Others have had some problems.

As far back as Win 3.1, I have had fair success with installing a program called In Cube from Command Corporation for some clients, particularly on older machines. Some people can get it to work like a charm, while others are constantly retraining it. However, Command Corp seems to have disappeared.

My father has Intel ViaVoice, and it works very excellently for his needs. He primarily uses it for voice controlled photo editing and email dictation. However, I think they may have stopped selling consumer versions.

Probably to oldest and most well developed speech to text programs are Dragon Naturally Speaking by Nuance, which basically also took over Lernout & Hauspie's Voice Express.
Not cheap, let alone free.

I am running XP Pro SP2. The program loads fine, but closes with the standard MS error with the Send/Don't send at the bottom. I also have a machine with Vista on it and that worked without a hitch. This is the 1st download via GAOTD that I have had a problem with. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance

Just wanted to add to my previous comment:
To completely close 2nd Speech you have to RIGHT click on the icon in the system tray, then choose Exit from the resulting menu. Forgot to include "right" click in the first comment, and it's not possible to edit one's already-posted comments on this site. (Might be a nice feature to add though, would cut down on multiple comments for corrections.) Many already know to RIGHT click on system tray icons to access secondary menus. But there's a lot of newbies here who may not know. Sorry for any possible confusion to the newbies.

#32 Mac: If you want to buy a TTS software then Expressivo is a better choice than today's program, at least if you speak English or Romanian since those are the only two on sale. The American English voice ("Jennifer") is better than the voices included in today's program. It only sounds robotic on certain words. You can hear a sample of any typed text at their site by going to Ideas & Description, then click Listen Online. Compare it to the included voices in today's program and you will hear a definite difference.

Dragon Input: Your voice
Results: transcription or command is performed

2nd Speech Center Input: Type written text
Results: Audio output

I'd like to point out that Dragon NaturallSpeaking is a speech recognition software. With it you can speak to the computer and it can transcribe it into words and sentences or what you say can be taken as a command for the computer to perform.

So, in other words 2nd Speech Center basically does the oposite of Dragon.

Thanks anyways, but there's a whole bunch of other (better?) free programs out there that do this, not the least of which is one that comes with Windows ME and XP.

Now what we really need is speech-to-text (not text-to-speech).
