#10 Nigel & Giovanni thanks for link to Gassoftwares AddressBook.
I used for several years and lost it during a hdd crash 2 years ago. I've been searching ever since. I never paid attention to the name just used my keyboard shortcut.
Giovanni — I don't know of any one who does not appreciate you and how you work like a dog for us finding free & better programs. If I were to meet you I'd scratch your ears for the good work.
I learned to use and get comfortable with Excel for addreses because I don't know about those data base things.

YOU ARE APPRECIATED!! Admittedly, I rarely post on this site but have found "some" usefull software. More-so, I have found MORE FREE, functional and superior software from YOUR referrals by reading YOUR post.
I actually search your name/handle to specifically find YOUR comments!
So - don't despair my friend. Your quote from post #11 - Comment by Giovanni (GAOTDs developers nightmare) — September 14th, 2013 at 7:15 am - "By the way: why the heck am I usually the only one mentioning FREE ALTERNATIVES here"?) can be answered very simply! You are WELL versed, educated and devoted to searching out functional free software for yourself & others. THEN - taking the time to share it with STRANGERS. I for one, APPRECIATE your efforts! Kindest regards and many thanks! I hope you see this post! ;o) Jim Grigg, NC .
This may be a dup but not sure how to directly respond to your post? GAOTD is much appreciated but is not always easily navigated and "offers" vary in difficulty regarding installation/registration/terms!
All aside - THANK YOU!! Good day!

Excel worksheet can be used as a database to keep contacts
Not really as Excel does not have the language or the facilities to do a complex search. By making such a statement you only confuse the less experienced computer user.

Out of curiosity, downloaded, registered and tried using it after entering some sample database entries.
Big Time FAIL.
Uninstalled immediately.
Extremely poor programming skills of software author.
Unable to search using common wildcards such as ? or *
Unable to do universal search for text in ANY field.
A few decades ago, I used a simple database software called PFS-File on the Apple II. That PFS software was so much better than this 2013 1-abc.net personal address5.
Not to mention the venerable Dbase II that we used in CPM. You can do wonders with it.
Microsoft Outlook already synchs with my mobile phone to keep all addresses in Contacts.
Excel worksheet can be used as a database to keep contacts.
Lotus Smart Suite - Approach database spreadsheet is powerful.
Mac users have a simple and powerful database named Bento.

Seeing that this giveaway is very much a 'does one thing and nothing else' program, I have to smile when the description of the Personal Information Center 1-abc.net are promoting on the page says;
"Instead of using different products that offer solutions to any single task ..."
Doesn't say much for the program if the publisher is telling us 'No, you don't want to use that, here's something better.'

EssentialPIM's (personal information manager) free version has worked for me for the last few years for contacts. There are also appointments, tasks, password manager, etc. and it can be portable. It's easy to use and search too, and updates every once in a while. So, I have no compelling reason to switch to 1abc.net Personal Address 5. Thanks, but no thanks.

@El Coyote (5. + 6.)
Here are our answers:
Q: Does the upgrade offer to Personal Information Center inlude also a “permanent” license to this GOTD version of Personal Address? By “permanent” I mean that I’ll be able to re-install the Personal Address anytime and/or transfer my license to a new computer.
A: Yes, of course, the key for 1-abc.net Personal Information Center is an unlimited full version key and you can install and uninstall the program as often as you like.
Q: Also, what about your license policy for both the programs: Is just a oune computer install or a sort of home/family install? (e.g.: desktop + laptop or two desktops – like husband and wife etc.)
A: The giveaway can be installed on as many computers as you like today, but activating of this version later is not possible, I'm sorry. All other paid licenses are for the person that purchased the program, which means that you can install it on all your Computers at home ... family is also okay as long as you do not have too many relatives.
Q: Sorry, forgot to ask about your update/upgrade policy: Is it “for life” or “time-based” (like one year) or x-times of new minor/major versions or… whatever…
A: The giveaway can be used for a lifetime but cannot be activated again later. Paid licenses are always lifetime licenses for the version available when buying and its minor updates (5.00 to 5.99), dicsounted upgrade offers for upcoming versions (6.00 or higher) are available if a user wants to switch to it instead of keeping his version 5.xx

The program has a small footprint and a pleasant interface, but I am unlikely to start using it unless I can import my data from the Windows Address Book. In principle this is possible by exporting from WAB to a csv file and then importing the csv file to 1-abc.net Personal Addresses. In practice, however, it is difficult to do this successfully. If you try, note that the commas have to be replaced by semi-colons.

By the way: why the heck am I usually the only one mentioning FREE ALTERNATIVES here?) Giovanni// Because you are the king of the freebies and your opinions are respected . I for one read all your reccomendations and have tried the alternatives . That's not to say that GAOTD is not great , but it is nice to have choices that are just as good or even better . Thanks Giovanni

Thanks to #1, Zdenek Rotrekl
I could not believe that your Video was correct: not able to search for parts in fields... but you are oddly right!
I tried this, because I LIKE it simple... - but this prog. not only lacks a CONVENIENT search feature but also needs a step too much for adding more than one address at once.
I could do a better search job myself with th old (DOS-based) filtering mechanisms as there are 'find', 'sort' and 'copy con'... or a simple editor.
(But of course: todays tool has as a convenient add an import/export function)

#1 Thanks for the link to the demo it saved me some time.
#2 & #4 I agree to a degree, but if you have a lot of info then you need a way to search.
When it comes to address’s and quite a lot of other stuff I just hate to be limited to data field’s. I find the whole thing to complicated. I much prefer to have a separate text file for each record. Like an old fashioned card index – one card for each record on which you can type or insert anything you like in any order. Evernote does that for me fine.

Pretty much useless app today, since to organize all your contact data you can use a whatsoever DATABASE program out there.
If you don't know how to get OFFICE for cheap, well you can use this magic FREE GEM (==> can create unlimited databases with unlimited tables, fields, and rows, with a custom report builder, enabling you to insert or paste Images in the Database with unlimited size for archiving):
http://www.ssuitesoft.com/database.htm
But the FREE & PORTABLE app "FREE ADDRESS BOOK" does exactly the same or even more than this GAOTD for FREE:
http://addressbook.gassoftwares.com
At least give GAOTD users the ability to update SW like this for a while in order to give them time to decide whether or not it's worth an upgrade, otherwise I can't see any reason to install a program like this even if it's FREE for 24 h (the only reason for that is of course that people are not aware of FREE & BETTER alternatives...but hey, I'm here just for this ==> LOL!!! By the way: why the heck am I usually the only one mentioning FREE ALTERNATIVES here?).
Enjoy!!

And as usual giveawayoftheday is NOT giving you the possibility to upgrade your programs. You get it once as it is at that moment. No upgrades possible. But many times they offer a newer one, so just get that one and then delete the older!!!

The readme.txt-file was a little uncorrect, so I also was somewhat
confused, but I managed having it installed
On their website they write under Feature overview:
Switch between different databases
I would like to make one for addresses, one for books, one for
grammophone-records, etc.
But nowhere in the programme do I see where to switch ?
The Help mentions NOTHING about this !

Just to clarify matters this would be best done in a database not a spreadsheet; spreadsheets are for calculations, databases are for storage and retrieval of information.
Both free programs OpenOffice and LibreOffice will allow you to create your own address storage system.

I have a folder named Addresses located in my documents. Also telephone numbers along with it. Anything changes I know where its at and insert the change. I click save while exiting out. I don't have that type of information scattered all over my PC. It is backed up also.

First of all I was confused by what the software can do, so I download it.
The installation was OK, but the registration was horrible. You have to register at the manufacturer’s (I hope it was the manufacturer)site. They send you an e-mail (ended in Spam on Gmail)to verify your e-mail address. Once you verify it, they finally send you the registration key.
You can see the software in action here: http://www.aj3000.org/demo/demo.html
In my opinion, this software doesn't do anything that your spreadsheet software cannot do. Moreover, I cannot see what I could use the software for.
Thumbs down this time. Sorry!
